Before making a splash as a feature film director, Alex Garland wrote two of Danny Boyle’s great films 28 Days Later, and Sunshine. In the 2010s, he wrote the Andrew Garfield romance film Never Let Me Go and the modern iteration of Judge Dredd titled Dredd. He made his directorial debut with the sci-fi thriller Ex-Machina which has been considered one of the best sci-fi films of the 2010s.

Garland was a novelist before stepping into Hollywood with three novels under his name including The Coma, The Tesseract, and The Beach. Influencer Jackie Miller James has woken up from a coma of over one month after suffering a brain aneurysm while she was pregnant with her and her husband Austin’s first child.
James’ family took to Instagram yesterday to show the joyful news.

Production in Russia has continued apace throughout much of the coronavirus pandemic, and a broad slate of titles launching at the virtual edition of this year’s European Film Market — from high-concept period dramas to psychological thrillers to horror pics — will look to tap into international interest in the fast-growing industry. “For us, it’s business as usual — boosting that potential,” says Vadim Vereshchagin, CEO of Central Partnership.
During EFM, Vereshchagin’s production and distribution outfit will launch sales on a raft of titles including “The World Champion,” a drama based on the legendary 1978 chess match between Soviet world champion Anatoly Karpov and the dissident Viktor Korchnoi. The co-production with Nikita Mikhalkov’s Studio TriTe and pubcaster Russia-1 is directed by Alexey Sidorov, who helmed the WWII blockbuster “T-34.”

August’s home media releases are off to a quiet start this week, as we only have a handful of titles heading to Blu-ray and DVD on Tuesday. One of this writer’s favorite films of 2020, Swallow, is coming home on both formats, and Joko Anwar’s remake of Satan’s Slaves (another great film!) is also hitting Blu and DVD this week as well. Scream Factory is set to unleash The Soul Collector on Tuesday, and if you happened to miss it on the network, HBO is releasing the first season of His Dark Materials on various formats, too.
Other Blu-ray and DVD titles arriving on August 4th include Coma, Gates of Darkness, Limbo, and The Haunting of Molly Bannister.
Coma: Steelbook Edition
After a tragic accident, a young architect wakes up in a dystopian world: Coma. Here, reality is made from the memories of people who have fallen into a comatose state.

Back in May, I stumbled across a fun, trippy trailer for a movie that left me baffled yet dazzled, chiefly because I didn't know anything about the movie, really. Now comes official word, via an official statement, that Dark Sky Films and Capelight Pictures will be releasing Coma on Blu-ray and DVD on August 4, 2020. Great! As I wrote previously: "It looks like someone took a few different video games, ripped out all the logic of the movements, and then translated it into a brand new language." Here is the official synopsis: "After a tragic accident, a young architect wakes up in a dystopian world: Coma. "Is this my life now?" Dark Sky Films has debuted an official US trailer for the radical Russian sci-fi action thriller Coma, also known as Koma or The Coma. The film marks the feature directorial debut of a visual effects supervisor, which is why there are tons of crazy cool VFX shots in this. We posted this teaser a few months ago, but there's a full trailer now for its US release next month. After a mysterious accident a young architect comes back to his senses in a very odd world. He must find out the exact laws and regulations of it as he fights for his life and keeps on looking for the exit to the real world. Starring Rinal Mukhametov, Lyubov Aksyonova, Anton Pampushnyy, Milos Bikovic, and Konstantin Lavronenko. Looks even more like a video game movie, the CGI is a bit too glossy, but I still must admit I love these visuals.

In the weeks following the inaugural edition of the Key Buyers Event, a showcase for new Russian productions held in Moscow last fall, Roskino CEO Evgenia Markova reached out to scores of international guests who had made the trip to the Russian capital. After what was largely perceived as a successful event, in which dozens of Russian titles sold to foreign buyers, Markova wanted to understand what else the film promotion body could do to support the continued growth of the Russian industry.
One piece of advice stood out. “Not many Russian names are known abroad,” says Markova. The consensus among many of the buyers in attendance was that “this is definitely what [Roskino] should work on: you should promote your actors, your producers, your directors. You should show the world you exist.”

"This world is made up of memories." What is this?! A trippy teaser trailer has debuted for a Russian sci-fi action thriller titled Coma, also known as Koma or The Coma. The film marks the feature directorial debut of a visual effects supervisor, which is why there are tons of crazy cool VFX shots in this. After a mysterious accident a young architect comes back to his senses in a very odd world. He must find out the exact laws and regulations of it as he fights for his life and keeps on looking for the exit to the real world. Starring Rinal Mukhametov, Lyubov Aksyonova, Anton Pampushnyy, Milos Bikovic, Konstantin Lavronenko. I love all the twisted, blended worlds and the way everything is frozen in mid-air. This is my kind of visually stunning sci-fi! Even if it looks a bit derivative, I can't help but say I'm more than sold.

Really, I don't know what's going on in the trailer for Coma (here titled Estado Coma for its release in Latin American territories), coming via Bf Distribution, but I like it. It looks like someone took a few different video games, ripped out all the logic of the movements, and then translated it into a brand new language. The dialogue can be heard in English, though it has Spanish sub-titles and the film itself evidently hails from Russia. Per IMDb: "After a mysterious accident a young architect comes back to his senses in a very odd world. He must find out the exact laws and regulations of it as he fights for his life and keeps on looking for the exit to the real world."...

Russian director Nikita Argunov is making a big splash with his feature film debut Koma.
Written and directed by Argunov, whose previous credits include visual effects work on Mongol and creative producer on Guardians (trailer), the story, from what I can piece together from some bad translations, centers on an architect who has an accident, goes into a coma and eventually wakes up only to discover he's actually not really awake but that he's awaken into Koma, a world that is only partially similar to the "real" world but which is actually pieced together from memories of people who are in deep comas.
