Hulu optioned Rebecca Godfrey’s Under the Bridge: The True Story of the Murder of Reena Virk back in 2022, and the limited series based on the bestseller is finally set to stream this month. Emmy nominee Riley Keough (Daisy Jones & The Six) stars as the late author of the 2005 true crime novel, and Oscar nominee Lily Gladstone (Killers of the Flower Moon) stars as a small town police officer intimately involved in the investigation.
“Under the Bridge is based on acclaimed author Rebecca Godfrey’s book about the 1997 true story of fourteen-year-old Reena Virk (Gupta) who went to join friends at a party and never returned home,” reads Hulu’s synopsis. “Through the eyes of Godfrey (Keough) and a local police officer (Gladstone), the series takes us into the hidden world of the young girls accused of the murder — revealing startling truths about the unlikely killer.”

The BBC is “considering” the findings of a study that found production costs would increase by a minimal amount if the working day was reduced from 10 to eight hours.
The ‘Designing a blueprint for a shorter working day in film and scripted drama’ blueprint found that costs would rise by just 4% if the industry reduced its standard working day by two hours.
Given that the working day would be reducing by one fifth and productions would therefore take longer to shoot, the main reason for the minimal increase in costs was put down to the fact that 71% of the 800 respondents to the survey would be prepared to see salaries drop to a pro-rata basis, which was used in the modelling. Almost all respondents (98%) said they want a shorter working day of eight hours.

Cirith Ungol have announced their sixth studio album, Dark Parade, arriving October 20th via Metal Blade. Lead single and album opener “Velocity (S.E.P.)” can be heard now.
The Cali vets are cult heroes among ’80s metal circles, and “Velocity (S.E.P.)” harnesses the band’s definitive power metal sound. Spiraling leads and melodic riffs lay the foundation, while frontman Tim Baker’s vocals echo ominously throughout all corners of the mix. It’s a surefire ripper with an air of evil, and as guitarist Jimmy Barraza explained, there are some specific musical quirks under the hood that are new to the Cirith Ungol formula.
“While talking with Tim and [drummer] Rob [Garven] about what kind of song was needed, a decision was made to stop doing the galloping chugs, as done many times on previous albums, and start doing down-picking chugs while keeping some sort of tie to the Cirith Ungol sound,...

Major UK broadcasters and Prime Video have pledged extra donations to the UK’s Film & TV Charity following an astonishing 800% rise in grant applications from workers struggling with the economic downturn.
The charity has also added an additional £500,000 to its budget as the BBC, Channel 4, Channel 5 and Prime agree further donations to its summer campaign. Other partners are expected to add to the overall pot as the challenging period looks set to continue.
The charity described the extra £500,000 as “unprecedented” and said the industry “faces critical economic conditions that could devastate the livelihood of professionals with long term consequences.”
The move is the first by incoming charity CEO Marcus Ryder, a former BBC News exec who will take over from Alex Pumfrey next month and is due to speak this week at the Edinburgh TV Festival.

The oversized contribution Chicago has made and continues to make to the American entertainment landscape comes in no small part from its vibrant and varied theater scene. With well over 200 theaters, from small stages featuring intimate fare to larger houses sending major productions to Broadway and beyond, it’s difficult to find any American film or television series that doesn’t have roots that trace back to Windy City stages.
The Steppenwolf Theater Company is one where heavy-hitters John Malkovich, Laurie Metcalf and Gary Sinise forged their craft early in their storied careers. Playwright and actor Tracy Letts premiered his Pulitzer Prize-winning “August: Osage County” at Steppenwolf in 2007.
“It’s a lot easier to produce good theater in Chicago than in many other places,” Malkovich told Roger Ebert back in 1984 and that still applies today. “You can always get a few people together and put on a play.”

Alex Pumfrey, the CEO of the U.K.’s Film and TV Charity, is set to leave the organization after nearly six years in the post.
Pumfrey, who joined as CEO in October 2017, has overseen a major transformation of the charity, including a full rebrand (it was formerly known as the Cinema and Television Benevolent Fund), and a shift in its focus from financial and later life support to mental health and wellbeing support for those working behind the scenes across the film and TV industry.
During Pumfrey’s tenure, the charity undertook its first Looking Glass survey, which revealed in early 2020 that nearly 90 percent of people working in the U.K.’s film, TV and cinema industries had experienced mental health issues, far above the national average. The survey — which claimed there was a “mental health crisis within the U.K. film and television industry” — prompted Pumfrey to lead the...

As many as 35,000 UK film and TV workers could be plunged into financial distress over the coming year, according to new research from The Film & TV Charity, which revealed improvements to the industry’s mental health crisis.
The charity’s third Looking Glass survey, which takes the industry’s temperature on mental wellbeing, bullying and working conditions, found 16 of 2,000 respondents believe their financial situation is “quite difficult” or “very difficult.”
Extrapolating this out, the organization said up to 35,000 workers could be “plunged into distress” due to a combination of inflation, energy price rises and higher rent and mortgage costs.
Around one-fifth of respondents said they are “just getting by”, 41 are “doing alright” and 21 “living comfortably,” according to the research. Elsewhere, 75 are “worried about future income” and 27 have to take work outside the industry to make ends meet.

The U.K. Film and TV Charity has launched the 2022 iteration of its landmark mental health Looking Glass Survey, alongside a fundraising campaign.
The first Looking Glass Survey in 2019 found that there was a mental health emergency happening behind the scenes in film, TV, and cinema, with 9 in 10 respondents to that survey stating that they had experienced a mental health problem. Following the survey, The Film and TV Charity launched a Bullying Advice Service, a Freelancer Wellbeing Hub, and several practical tools and resources, all available through the charity’s website.
The 2021 survey focused on how industry workers were responding to the challenges presented by the pandemic, and found that just one in 10 people agreed that the industry was a mentally healthy place to work. However, there were also signs of a tide turning, with respondents recognizing that conversations around mental health, culture, and working conditions were starting to take root.

More than half of the UK’s film and TV industry workforce experienced bullying, harassment or discrimination in the past year, according to alarming statistics from The Film & TV Charity (Tftvc) that did find the “mental health crisis” to be plateauing.
The organization’s second ever Looking Glass report, which surveyed more than 2,000 people, found 57% had been targeted by these unacceptable behaviors in 2021. Broken down, around 40% said they had experienced bullying, 39% racial harassment or discrimination and 11% sexual harassment.
Alex Pumfrey, CEO of Tftvc, described the results to Deadline as “shocking, surprising and disheartening.”
“I really hoped this behavior was changing in the wake of the Harvey Weinstein and Noel Clarke incidents so to see such problematically high figures is very troubling,” said Pumfrey.
There is, however, a “real cross-industry effort to tackle the issue through multiple angles,” added the charity boss, pointing to her organization’s bullying advice work, updated...

Bullying, harassment and discrimination remain rife in the U.K. screen industry, according to a new report.
Over 50% of respondents to the survey set by the Film and TV Charity reported they had experienced “bullying, sexual or racial harassment or discrimination, or other harassment or discrimination in the past year alone.”
The news will no doubt be a blow to the industry, which has renewed its efforts to tackle bullying, harassment and discrimination over the past eighteen months.
The figures are among a plethora of worrying details contained in the charity’s second report on wellbeing in the industry. The Looking Glass ’21 report is a follow up to a similar 2019 report which, according to the charity, “uncovered a mental health crisis in the U.K. film and TV industry.”
The latest report, garnered from 2,000 eligible responses, shows that work intensity and long hours (partly caused by the U.K.’s...

The Watcher asks one simple question: "What if..."
Sometimes that means what if T'Challa was picked up by the Ravengers instead of Peter Quill, or what if Peggy Carter took the super-soldier serum. But the biggest question has gone unanswered ... until now. What if these episodes of Disney+'s "What If...?" weren't just one-shots? Well, we might have a little info to consider in the form of a quote from the show's head writer, A.C. Bradley.
According to Bradley those little tags at the end of the episodes aren't just filling in the timeline for these alternate worlds. They could also hint at a...

LeBron James might be out of the NBA playoffs, but he’s still angling to be a big part of the summer entertainment season. That’s because HBO Max’s list of new releases for July 2021 is highlighted by a very special sequel.
Space Jam: A New Legacy premieres on July 16. will find LeBron teaming up with the Looney Tunes in a Warner Bros. IP-extravaganza. Can ‘Bron and the Looney Tunes beat the Goon Squad before Warner Bros.’ server steals LeBron “Bronny” Jr.’s soul (or something)? Let’s hope so. The two other major WB releases this month, No Sudden Move and Tom and Jerry in New York, both come to HBO Max on July 1.

Welcome to The B-Side, from The Film Stage. Here we talk about movie stars! Not the movies that made them famous or kept them famous, but the ones that they made in between.
Today, Conor and I discuss a fan favorite: Marisa Tomei! We’re joined by the lovely Jen Johans, host of the Watch With Jen podcast! The Tomei B-Sides we cover include: Oscar, Unhook The Stars, The Watcher, and Happy Accidents. Tomei burst onto the scene in the ‘80s on television, earning plum roles in big studio films soon enough.
We dig into what makes Tomei so very watchable and how that approachability has led to an incredibly diverse career. At a young age, Tomei won the Oscar for My Cousin Vinny, a victory so surprising it spurred silly rumors that persisted for some time. What followed was a slew of fascinating lead roles in the ‘90s and...

The series is inspired by the real-life “Watcher” house in New Jersey, which was put back on the market after the new homeowners received chilling letters from “The Watcher,” who claimed to have been “watching” the house for decades. Exclusive: Naomi Watts and Bobby Cannavale are set as the leads in The Watcher, a Netflix limited series from Ryan Murphy and his frequent collaborator Ian Brennan.
No one would comment, but I hear The Watcher follows a married couple whose move into their dream home is being threatened by terrifying letters from a stalker, signed “The Watcher.”
This marks a reunion for Watts and Cannavale, who star together in the upcoming movie Once Upon a Time in Staten Island.
Executive producing with Murphy and Brennan are Eric Newman (Narcos), Bryan Unkeless as well as Henry Joost and Ariel Schulman (Catfish). Filming is set to begin in the fall.

The first Emmy ever awarded for costume design went to Bob Mackie and his late partner (creatively and, later, romantically), Ray Aghayan, for their fanciful designs on NBC’s 1966 TV movie Alice Through the Looking Glass.
They had been nominated a year prior for CBS’ Wonderful World of Burlesque II, which featured Lucille Ball in an elaborate butterfly costume. For some reason, the Emmys awarded no trophy in the category’s introductory year (then called “Individual Achievements in Art Direction and Allied Crafts — Costume Design”), but Looking Glass did win in 1967 (and was the only nominee).

Impact of Covid-19 and systemic discrimination to be explored in new research.
The UK’s Film and TV Charity has launched a major research project to measure the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic and systemic discrimination on the workforce.
The charity has reissued its Looking Glass survey to offer fresh insight into the mental health of those who work behind the scenes in UK film, TV and cinema.
It will update the first iteration of the research, compiled in 2019, which revealed that 87% of film and TV workers in the UK had experienced a mental health problem, far higher than the 65% UK national average.

Bret Easton Ellis gets top billing in the poster for Smiley Face Killers, which claims it is "inspired by true events," yet what primarily grabs my attention is director Tim Hunter. Reuniting with Crispin Glover (from the director's River's Edge) is good -- here he is concealed as a cloaked figure -- and sounds promising, as does the premise that the film is also inspired by "the twisted 'smiley face killers' conspiracy theory that has gripped the American imagination for decades," per the synopsis. Still, director Tim Hunter remains a potent force, as he proved with his somewhat loony, entirely compelling previous feature film, Looking Glass (2018). Here's what I wrote about him in my review at the time: "Director Tim Hunter first came on...

Rolled out in a very different manner than in previous years due to the coronavirus pandemic, today’s Emmy nominations unveiling contained unexpected omissions and admissions galore.
Delivered remotely by Leslie Jones, Laverne Cox, Josh Gad and Tatiana Maslany this morning, the contenders for the 72nd Primetime Emmy Awards saw some powerful swings for Watchmen, Dead to Me‘s Christina Applegate and Linda Cardellini, Succession and The Handmaid’s Tale. Yet for the main stars of Big Little Lies‘ second season and others overlooked in the more than 100 categories, it might have been best to stay in bed and pull the covers over their heads.
Whatever form the Jimmy Kimmel-hosted and Reginald Hudlin-executive produced ABC ceremony takes on September 20, here are some names and projects you won’t see in the running – and a few that almost no one expected to see in the races.

Jim Parsons won four Emmys for “The Big Bang Theory,” and now he gives a showy, against-type performance as an exploitative talent agent in “Hollywood,” so it’s no surprise that he’s the Emmy front-runner for Best Movie/Limited Supporting Actor according to the combined predictions of Gold Derby users. But not everyone agrees on that point. Our Top 24 Users, who got the highest scores predicting last year’s nominations, are betting on one of the “Watchmen”: Tim Blake Nelson.
Out of the Expert journalists we’ve surveyed, 13 of them are betting on Parsons to win: Thelma Adams (Gold Derby), Shawn Edwards (Wdaf-tv Fox), Lynn Elber (Associated Press), Pete Hammond (Deadline Hollywood), Libby Hill (IndieWire), Wilson Morales (BlackFilm), Mary Murphy (Gold Derby), Hanh Nguyen (Salon), Nikki Novak (Fandango), Tom O’Neil (Gold Derby), Jazz Tangcay (TV Guide Magazine), Ken Tucker (Yahoo) and Susan Wloszczyna (Gold Derby).

In re-imagining HBO’s “Watchmen” series as a present-day sequel to the graphic novel about a race war tied to the Tulsa massacre, two of the biggest VFX challenges were how to create the reflective mask for Looking Glass (played by Tim Blake Nelson) along with the crucial look for the glowing blue Doctor Manhattan (Yahya Abdul-Mateen II). In fact, many will be surprised to learn that the mask for the Tulsa detective was all-cg, while the quantum-based superhero was a creative hybrid of different techniques.
But it took a lot of brainstorming and experimentation to please showrunner Damon Lindelof, who conceived of the mirror mask and wanted a less fantastical-looking Doctor Manhattan than his onscreen predecessor (Billy Crudup in Zack Snyder’s 2009 “Watchmen” feature).
“Damon came in and said, ‘I want this guy’s mask to be a mirror,’ and we all wondered if there was some fabric,” said...

From the first moments in the premiere of HBO’s “Watchmen” last October, the show proved to be the most urgent and prescient series on television today. Rather than adapt the universally acclaimed 1986 graphic novel “Watchmen” written by Alan Moore and illustrated by Dave Gibbons — which had already been made into a 2009 feature film by Zack Snyder — co-creator and executive producer Damon Lindelof chose instead to update the world of the novel from New York City in 1985 to Tulsa, Oklahoma in 2019.
The reason for the change of venue was simple, but devastating: The show’s main hero, Angela Abar, aka the police detective Sister Night (Regina King), is a direct descendant of a survivor of the very real 1921 massacre of the Tulsa neighborhood known as Black Wall Street.
