Good episode
laureceballos8 February 2021
Warning: Spoilers
The acting was great in this episode and new characters too. Hopefully we learn the background of Troy more now there was one actor who just wasn't quite there. Who let Madison cry like that she wasn't even crying she was trying to but I didn't believe it she was trying to hard. At first I hated Travis because of how naive he was with the whole situation but he grew on me and he had character development but Madison no she's been annoying from the start and still thinking she could shield her kids from death. This is the apocalypse for god sake and her kids are like 17 and 18 fully aware of how to take care of themselves and they've shown themselves too. Madison needs to go she's not having character development or anything she's just annoying thinking she can control situations that can't be fixed that don't need to fixed for that matter she's not even a good actress. Madison should've died instead of Travis and that's lot coming from how naive they can be from the truth. YOU CANT BE GOOD OR BAD OR RIGHT OR WRONG IN THIS WORLD!!! If you think otherwise then you're gonna get yourself killed or others killed.

So yeah I hated Madison acting in this episode I'm sorry it wasn't believable for me. The person she loved and risked everything for just died and she cannot even cry wait I'm sorry she can but all I hear are just noses and little drops of tears.

The Confronting Truth of Death
ZegMaarJus17 May 2020
Warning: Spoilers
This episode was a tragic one. The death of Travis Manawa, in my eyes one of the most important characters on the show. He was a very cool character, and the leader of the Clarks/Manawa family.

Warning: Spoilers
How you can kill or at least we see that, a character who showed us that he can survive and keep his family safe just in the previous episode he proved this. Man he's the only one who can do that. Madison doesn't have a bit of empathy !!! The protagonist could not cry the death of her husband???

The only good thing is that it is no longer the second season or the first.

I need Morgan rigth now.

You kill your best character in the opening scene?!
alexthelion-2129 April 2021
Warning: Spoilers
Travis was the heart of the show. He had gone through so much so to kill him off in the opening scene was insulting. Whether it not the actor wanted off the show, there were a million better ways to do it.

Warning: Spoilers
The way Travis is gone and the whole thing was epic. I felt exactly what i was waiting to feel

When Alicia's tears dropped and the background music hits at the same time it was epic and felt like it's never gonna be fine again, cuz that is the fact of this new life.

I think the using of the music & sounds of the whole starting was excellent.

What happened with the script?
mariusarmangue4 July 2019
Warning: Spoilers
Near the end of the previous season, the writers were on a track. The well executed choice of killing Chris made a change in Travis' character that would later be explored and built on in season 3. Well, that could have been the possibility if the writers didn't kill Travis off in the worst way possible. He just randomly got shot in the head while sitting in a flying helicopter in a way that doesn't even make sense if you look at where the shots come from. Travis death is such wasted possibility and it's sad to think about what else thy could have done. It makes Chris death completely unnecessary too. If you look past Travis, yeah the episode is fine. It's probably as good at most other ones in this show but nothing special. It's just hard to look past something like that. It's moments like these where you start wondering if the actor just didn't wanna be a part of the show anymore or what on earth happened. Disappointed

Stupidest death in TV History.
nicofreezer10 November 2022
I thought Dexter death would forever be the stupidest and most nonsensical death of all time. But here Come Fear the Walking dead, and after a terrible terrible terribly boring Season 2. The show start with a good Season 3 opener, and then we have this episode and the first scene of it. Who Can be the writter of such garbage ? How can you give your best character such a stupid death ? Travis die in less than one minute, After spending the entire season 2 working on his character, to finally make him a badass character... I was interested again after episode 1, for the first since a good 10 boring episodes, but After 1 minute im back beeing bored.

I need Morgan ASAP.

The episode explores the theme of power dynamics in a lawless society, as Otto exerts control over his community through fear and manipulation
fernandoschiavi15 April 2024
At night, the helicopter is attacked and Travis is shot and bleeding out. He falls to his death much to Alicia's horror. After the helicopter crash, Alicia and Jake, Troy's brother, carry Luciana to the ranch on foot. At Broke Jaw Ranch, Madison and Nick meet Jeremiah Otto and become suspicious of the place. Alicia's group arrives and Jeremiah agrees to treat Luciana in the infirmary if provided she has a pulse. Nick complies and Luciana is taken to the infirmary. Madison silently grieves Travis' death.

At the Rosarito Beach Hotel, Strand allows many angry refugees inside the gates, falsely claiming he is a doctor to calm them and save Hector and Elena from their wrath. Following the claim, Elena orders Strand to leave before his lie enrages the survivors but not before he checks on Ilene, the woman who stabbed him. They chat and she leaps off her balcony but before giving him keys to a Jaguar.

In the second episode of the third season, "The New Frontier," "Fear the Walking Dead" continues to explore the harsh realities of the post-apocalyptic world. The episode focuses on Madison and Nick's attempts to find a new community after escaping from the military compound. They encounter a group of survivors led by Jeremiah Otto, who offers them refuge at his ranch. However, tensions arise as Madison learns more about Otto's past and the dark secrets of the ranch.

One of the most memorable scenes in this episode is when Madison confronts Otto about his past actions, highlighting the moral ambiguity of survival in the apocalypse. The episode also delves into the theme of family dynamics, as Madison tries to protect her children while navigating the dangerous world they live in.

"The New Frontier" also explores the theme of power dynamics in a lawless society, as Otto exerts control over his community through fear and manipulation. This episode sets the stage for the complex and morally challenging situations the characters will face throughout the season.

Overall, "The New Frontier" is a compelling episode that further develops the characters and the world of "Fear the Walking Dead." It raises thought-provoking questions about morality, survival, and the lengths people will go to in order to protect themselves and their loved ones in a world without rules.

A Beautifully Shot Aftermath
lunasnowhehe10 June 2021
Fear decides to spin up the narrative in "A New Frontier" which gives some characters that have rarely had development in the past more character depth. The slow burn works perfectly in this aftermath of an episode and it enables you to really dive into the mindset of Kim Dickens' Madison Clark and her thought process.

Warning: Spoilers
3x2 Rating: 7.4/10 the plot twist is kind of huge but still not that good

Storyline: At night, the helicopter pilot, Charlene, navigates toward the ranch with Jake by her side. Travis and Alicia tend to Luciana in the back. Jake wonders whether or not to gain more altitude, but decides against it. Out of nowhere, a round of bullets hit the chopper.

As the chopper tries to evade the gunfire, Travis is shot. He clasps his hand over his neck, and calls for help. He then unbuckles his harness and opens the door. "Help me," Travis tells Alicia. She unbuckled and tries to stop him, insisting he's in shock, but goes silent when she sees a large hole in his side. She realizes he was shot in the stomach, and the bullet came out through his neck. Unable to do much else, her hand slips away as Travis falls out of the helicopter to his death.

Refugees clamor at the gate of the Rosarito Beach Hotel, demanding to see the doctor. Elena denies them entry, insisting that she can't help them. Strand announces that he is a doctor and unlocks the gate. Elena and Hector are angry at Strand, but he tells them that he just saved them - the refugees would have killed them all if he didn't let them in.

On the ground, Jake tells Alicia they must push forward to escape whoever shot the chopper down. Alicia wonders if Travis is still alive, but Jake insists Travis could not have survived the fall.

The next day, Troy blasts heavy metal music as he drives Madison and Nick to his father's ranch. Madison keeps her guard up, still leery of Troy and his motives. Eventually the caravan pulls up to Broke Jaw Ranch. A guard tells Troy that Jake never arrived. Troy orders Madison and Nick to get out of the truck. He drives inside the gate, leaving Madison and Nick outside looking in. Nick suggests they backtrack and find the rest of their group, but Madison insists they stay put in case the helicopter arrives. She reveals to Nick that she stole a gun off the truck and tells him they can protect themselves if they have to.

At the hotel, Strand treats a child with minor wounds. As he rests, Elena urgently summons him to treat someone in dire need of a doctor. She brings Strand to the medical tent, where a woman is about to give birth. Strand insists he is not that kind of doctor, but he agrees to assist when the patient's husband threatens him with a knife.

Nick refuses to stay at the ranch, but Madison reminds him that this is their best shot at medical treatment for Luciana. Troy's father, Jeremiah Otto, introduces himself to Madison and Nick and orders the guard to let them in. Jeremiah shows Madison and Nick around the ranch and explains that he initially started the camp to prepare for the fall of democracy. Madison is critical of Troy, but Jeremiah defends his son's behavior by stating that he was just carrying out his mission at the depot. Sensing Madison and Nick's hostility, he points out that most people would be grateful to be at the ranch.

Jeremiah brings Madison and Nick to their bunkhouse and leaves them with a key. Nick grumbles about Madison being nice to Jeremiah after his son tried to kill them. Madison admits that she doesn't have a plan yet, but they should play nice while they bide their time.

That night, Charlene takes first watch while Jake and Alicia sit by the campfire. Jake explains that Troy has had behavioral problems since he was a child. They hear a warning whistle from Charlene. Jake gives Alicia a gun, then runs off to investigate.

An infected attacks Jake and pins him to a tree. Alicia arrives and saves Jake by shooting the infected dead, then takes out two more approaching in the darkness. Jake and Alicia discover Charlene's dead body. Jake shoots her in the head to keep her from turning.

Having delivered the baby, Strand is told by Elena that he must leave immediately, but Hector tells Strand there is another patient in need of his services before he goes. He brings Strand to Ilene's room and asks him to convince her to eat. She has been holed up there since she stabbed Strand. She is depressed and despondent over the death of her daughter. Ilene apologizes to Strand for what she did, then asks if he will fix her broken balcony door. She needs fresh air and the door is stuck. Strand takes care of the door, telling Ilene that he now has hope for a new generation with the birth of the baby he delivered. Ilene gives Strand a box with a key inside, a wedding gift intended for her daughter and son-in-law. Ilene then jumps off the balcony to her death stating that there are no more generations.

Back at their camp, Alicia tells Jake that Luciana is unconscious. She is worried that they won't make it back to the ranch in time to save her. They decide to carry her together. Some hours later, a ranch guard looks through his binoculars and sees Jake and Alicia carrying Luciana toward the gate.

Madison joyfully reunites with Alicia. She looks for Travis, then falls to her knees with grief upon realizing that Travis is gone. Troy predicts that Luciana will soon die and takes out his gun to put her down. Nick begs him not to shoot, but Troy explains it's their policy to keep dying patients out of the infirmary in case they turn. Nick offers to be the one to kill Luciana and Troy hands him his gun. Nick then turns the gun on Troy and demands Luciana receive treatment. Jeremiah intervenes and agrees to treat Luciana in the infirmary if Nick hands back the gun and provided she has a pulse. Nick complies and Luciana is taken to the infirmary.

Madison grieves in private over the death of Travis. Jeremiah finds her, offers his condolences, and then gently asks her to register the gun that she stole from them. She signs out the gun in his log book.

Nick stands by Luciana's side in the infirmary. He checks in with Alicia and holds her as she weeps over Travis' death.

Strand finds that the key Ilene gave him operates a car in the hotel's parking garage, and he drives off.

Madison tells Nick and Alicia that they're going to make the ranch their home, even if that means they must take it over. Alicia objects, saying that such a thing is insane, but Madison disagrees. "It's our fate." She demands to know exactly how Travis died.

Beautifully shot and directed, suspenseful from beginning to end, The New Frontier is a fantastic episode
Holt34430 September 2020
Warning: Spoilers
The second episode begins exactly where we left off but an hour or so later. Travis, Alicia and Luciana are in the helicopter whilst Madison and Nick are in the vehicle down below. They are split up but not for long. In Mexico we get to see Victor Strand again back at the hotel that we last saw him. As the story progresses we get introduced to one of the main settlements/communities of the season and it's the Otto ranch which would probably happen in real life if a zombie outbreak happens. The writing of this episode is overall amazing, and I strongly believe it's user rating should be higher, there's some unpredictable things that happen but it's mostly realistic writing.

What Fear The Walking Dead does best is create these suspenseful moments that keeps you on the edge of your seat as anything can happen, the musical score are always top notch. They have always had good cinematography as well, there's so many beautiful shots in this episode and it's thanks to the incredible sets.

This episode has a reunion of sorts for those who have watched Deadwood, Kim Dickens and Dayton Callie who plays Madison Clark and Jeremiah Otto Sr. It's great that they share scenes with each other once again as they had great chemistry back then and now.

To end my review I want to go into one of the most important moments of the episode, Travis' death. Was I shocked the first time? Yes, because he had an enormous amount of character development and his arc went in a very Interesting place. But why kill him off you may ask Dave Erickson, it's shock value but for the bigger picture of the whole story it was needed as we learn who shot down the helicopter and killed him (the bullets went into his stomach and out the neck, so no walker bite Dave confirmed), a death like Travis makes for great and lots of interesting character development for our remaining characters in the Clark family. Dave Erickson is trying to give us a realistic world and he have succeeded.

No! Travis No!
panagiotis199318 December 2022
Warning: Spoilers
Wait someone is shooting at the helicopter? What? Travis is injured? No! Travis is dead? No No No! I loved Travis man, no... Such a tragedy! Victor is back, im happy. What is he doing at the hotel man, just leave already. I wanna know who shot Travis though. So they want Victor to leave because he pretended to be a doctor? So what? Ilene completely lost her mind, she couldn't deal with losing her loved ones, killed herself, very tragic. Poor Madison, realizing Travis is gone. Can't wait to see Victor's new adventure. How does Madison think they can take control of the camp? They are just three people while they have an army. Makes no sense. Travis' death felt cheap but good episode overall, my rating is 7.5/10.

Just terrible.
aboethius6 June 2023
Warning: Spoilers
This is just terrible. Stepdad killed by a random bullet in a mostly dull meaningless death, not even getting to speak. I guess they had to write him out of the show at the last minute for whatever reason. Still, these so-called "writers" should be able to come up with a meaningful way for him to die. Hmm.. .maybe like sacrificing himself against some walkers. DUH! This is simply amateurish garbage and unacceptable. So I guess the helicopter gang are stranded with bad people on their tail? It won't be easy for them to get home with a sick lady, right? Someone dies that we know nothing about and they act like we should feel something about it. Whatever. But nope, fooled you! They were just like a 2 minute walk away. Well, that's what the show made it feel like - absolutely nothing.

What's his name playing doctor dull too. Do these people have any clue where they are trying to take us? I don't even think they know what the setting is supposed to be. Are we going to build up the hotel, or off to another mansion that this fake-doctor has up his sleeve maybe. Who cares!

Nick can be interesting sometimes but he and his mom are just awful and annoying when they are together. Just don't talk to each other if you still hate her so much like normal teens do. Wait...is he a teen? I don't know. Sometime he acts like 20+, sometimes seems like he is 13. The scene with her lover made absolutely zero sense. The wrong people are talking at the wrong time in an utter stupid way to manufacture fake suspense. The doctor/medic can only say 3 words only so the one-eyed idiot can take over the scene without even getting a diagnosis. The old leader is also stupidly dead quiet, and the supposedly better brother too. But point a gun at people and now the leader can speak? Get out of here with this garbage! Then we have more horrible acting by the mom, and the writing makes no sense. What is wrong with peoples mouths? Are they dead walkers or something? Nobody is going to say or ask what happened to stepdad? I think that is one of the first things most people would want to know. I guess even these so-called show-runners want everybody to forget about that death scene already.

Clark Family will get you killed
namob-4367330 November 2023
The Clark family is the same as a death sentence to anyone associated with or meeting them. As the typical family that would never survive the apocalypse they show a remarkable ability of bringing death and destruction to wherever they go.

At least we finally saw the abrupt and kind weird death of Travis. The idiot who has been making the wrong decisions from day 1 is finally gone. Phuu...

The only in the family that can act and is useful is Alicia. She seem to be the only one with intelligence. Keep her, kill the rest, and bring in some sexy military dude for Alicia to cuddle with and this could actually be watchable.

The core cast misgivings is however not the worst with this show. The linear storytelling coupled with bad acting and bad dialogue make this a very boring watch. How do you take Zombies, the apocalypse, shootings, gory adventures and turn it all into a boring sludge? Well, apparently the writers of this show know how to.

A very weak 4/10. I am so bored with this show now that I am fastforward every episode to see if this actually gets better... so far no luck...
