Delivering MipJunior’s keynote on Saturday, a composed Ramsey Naito, president of Paramount Animation and Nickelodeon Animation talked up some of the recurrent themes at this weekend’s kids content confab, not to mention the network’s strategies for its slew of successful franchises.
In her current position, the Nickelodeon veteran has overseen huge expansion. Five years ago, she said, there were only nine animation properties in development. That figure has now risen to 60, and includes some of the most successful properties in the business, including “Paw Patrol,” “Dora,” “Transformers” and “SpongeBob.”
Naito said allowing creatives to follow their vision and taking risks has been part of this success. Not to mention the kids themselves.
“Nickelodeon always lets the kids lead in creative and business decisions,” she said.
She added: “When I started working at Nickelodeon in the late ‘90s, straight out of art school, what attracted me was that it had true creator DNA.

Now Deadline reports that Spaeny is being joined in the cast by Isabela Merced, whose credits include Rosaline, Dora and the Lost City of Gold, Sweet Girl, and the 2022 version of Father of the Bride. Details on the characters being played by Spaeny and Merced are being kept under wraps.

‘Downton Abbey’.
Downton Abbey continues its box office domination, having now taken over $7 million in two weeks and beating out new releases Ad Astra, Good Boys and Rambo: Last Blood.
The Universal title eased by just 30 per cent in its second run, bringing in $2.6 million from 452 screens.
The period drama’s success has also been reflected overseas, enjoying a buoyant North American opening weekend – a record for Focus Features with Us$31 million across 3,079 theatres. Downton also opened in 15 other markets with global box office takings sitting royally at Us$61.8 million.
Cinema Nova Gm Kristian Connelly says Downton Abbey’s outstanding cinema performance across both weekends amplified the importance of content for older audiences.

Universal’s “Good Boys” has done something that is becoming increasingly rare with its $21 million No. 1 opening at the box office. Not only is it the first original R-rated comedy in three years to top the box office charts, it is also only the second original film of any kind to open at No. 1 this year.
“Good Boys” was positioned by Universal to take advantage of this quieter August period after Spider-Man, Simba and Thanos have taken their share of summer moviegoers’ money. But Universal has also become a studio that has consistently found success with comedy at a time when so many titles in the genre have failed.
While a “Hangover”-level hit remains elusive, “Good Boys” joins films like “Night School,” “Ride Along 2” and the $115 million-grossing “Girls Trip” as Universal mid-budget comedies that have turned a profit in the last three years.

A great August for Universal continues this weekend with the release of “Good Boys,” an R-rated comedy that is surprising at the box office with an estimated $20.8 million opening from 3,204 screens. That will make the Seth Rogen-produced raunchfest the first R-rated comedy to top the charts since “The Boss” in April 2016.
On Friday, “Good Boys” earned $8.3 million and did well with audiences, earning a B+ on CinemaScore to go with its 79% Rotten Tomatoes score from critics. The film had been projected for a modest $11-12 million opening this weekend, but will now continue Universal’s streak of comedies like “Night School,” “Girls Trip” and “Blockers” as solid, mid-budget successes at a time when so many adult comedies have failed to take off in theaters.

Updated, Thursday Am: Sony’s Angry Birds 2 ranked 4th yesterday with $1.6M, -36% for a running two day total of $4.2M. Disney’s Lion King and Universal’s Hobbs & Shaw are currently fighting over No. 1 Wednesday with $2.3M a piece. CBS Films’ Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark took third place with just under $2M and six-day total of $28.5M. Paramount’s Dora and Sony’s Once Upon a Time in Hollywood are wrangling over 5th with $1.5M a piece.
By the way, this whole flooding of the early August marketplace with several wide releases was going on last year at this time, however, it was four wide entries each for the first and second weekend, not five like this year. The only difference is that we had powerful pics like Meg and Crazy Rich Asians rising to the top last August while distributors are largely delivering low budget fare.

Sony’s “The Angry Birds Movie 2” is hitting theaters nationwide today ahead of a late summer slate that includes Universal’s R-rated kid comedy “Good Boys” and a sequel to the shark-infested “47 Meters Down.”
Originally set for a Wednesday release, Sony moved “Angry Birds 2” to a Tuesday opening last week in an effort to bring in families in the last week before the majority of schools are back in session. Through six days, independent projections predict an opening of $22-25 million, while Sony is projecting a 6-day opening in the mid-teens from 3,800 screens.
Either result would be a big step down from the $38 million 3-day opening earned by the first “Angry Birds Movie” in May 2016, going on to make $107 million domestic and $357 million worldwide against a $73 million budget. The sequel has an only slightly smaller budget at $65 million and will face tough competition from family audiences with “The Lion King...

Ashley Park is set to co-star with Lily Collins in Paramount Network’s “Emily in Paris” from “Sex and the City” and “Younger” creator Darren Star.
The series is currently in production in Paris, France. Park is known for playing Gretchen Wieners in the Broadway adaptation of “Mean Girls,” and for playing Jennifer “Ani” Winter in Netflix’s “Tales of the City” revival.
According to Paramount, “Emily In Paris” centers on Emily (Collins), a driven, twenty-something American woman from the Midwest, who moves to Paris for an unexpected job opportunity, tasked with bringing an American point of view to a venerable French marketing firm. Nickelodeon and its younger preschool sibling Nick Jr. once dominated kids cable programming with a long list of iconic shows, including “Rugrats,” “SpongeBob SquarePants,” “Blue’s Clues,” and “Dora the Explorer.” Now, as parent company Viacom continues its charge to reposition its movie studio Paramount Pictures toward the top of the heap, the media and entertainment company continues to mine its deep cavern of untapped IP in hopes of returning the studio to iconic status. The strategy is proving worthwhile, as Paramount’s new film “Dora and the Lost City of Gold” opened this past weekend with a decent box office total of $17 million. Universal’s “Hobbs & Shaw” led new releases and holdovers this weekend with $25 million grossed in its second frame, pushing the “Fast & Furious” spinoff to a 10-day domestic total of $108 million.
That result for the “Fast & Furious” spinoff is a 58% drop from its $60 million opening. While “Fate and the Furious” had a similar drop from its $98 million opening two years ago, “Hobbs & Shaw” is now falling behind the pace of “Mission: Impossible – Fallout.”
That Tom Cruise action film had a similar start to “Hobbs & Shaw,” opening in late July last year to a $60 million opening, but it held on better with just a 42% drop in its second weekend. “Hobbs & Shaw” is still looking to its release in China in two weeks, hoping to continue the “Fast & Furious”‘ winning streak in that country.

CBS Films and eOne's Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark — adapted from the best-selling children's horror book series by Alvin Schwartz — terrified the competition on Friday with an opening day haul of $8.8 million at the crowded August box office.

Holdover “Hobbs & Shaw” will lead the North American box office this weekend at $25 million followed by “Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark” at $22 million, early estimates showed Friday.
Disney’s fourth frame of “The Lion King” should follow in third at about $19 million, just beating Paramount’s launch of family adventure “Dora and the Lost City of Gold” with $17 million at 3,735 locations.
The third weekend of Quentin Tarantino’s “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood” is projected to finish fifth with about $10 million for a 17-day take of $99 million. The weekend total for “Once” is enough to top the openings of Disney-Fox’s “The Art of Racing in the Rain” with $8 million at 2,765 venues and Warner Bros.’ crime drama “The Kitchen” with $5 million at 2,745 sites. Bleecker Street’s opening of biopic “Brian Banks” is showing little traction with $1.7 million at 1,240 screens.

“It was amazing,” Isabela Moner said of playing beloved animated character Dora the Explorer at the world premiere of the live-action movie adaptation, “Dora and the Lost City of Gold.” “I’m half Peruvian so the opportunity to be able to represent at this level is unheard of. Peru is never mainstream unless it’s for the hippies that go to Machu Picchu, so to be able to represent like this is just insane to me.”
Moner, who learned the indigenous Peruvian language, Quechua, while prepping to portray the hyper-intelligent Dora, is excited to see how the film will be received by Latin American audiences, especially the Peruvian community. “I want to push for a premiere in Peru and if they are not going to have one themselves, I’ll probably just go and do my own little event,” Moner said on the jungle-themed green carpet at L.A. Live in Los Angeles on Sunday.

When “Dora the Explorer” made her debut on Nickelodeon in 2000, she not only became the first animated Latina character in a leading role but also birthed what would become the longest-running American TV show that featured characters speaking Spanish. (The show is still running on Nickelodeon with new episodes).
Nineteen years later, Dora gets the live-action treatment in “Dora and the Lost City of Gold,” and despite an awkward first act, the film harkens back to the family-adventure genre that today’s parents can recall from their own childhoods.
Dora and her parents (Michael Peña and Eva Longoria) have lived in the jungles of South America for all of Dora’s life. The jungle is her home, her school and her playground, and like many young teenagers she runs through her life documenting everything with a GoPro strapped on, speaking to an invisible audience about the wonders of exploring the rain forest.

If you’re over the age of 5 and don’t have any children, odds are you’re probably not very familiar with the cartoon “Dora the Explorer.” However, if you are under 5 or have young children, then you’ve definitely experienced the children’s cartoon that attempts to use an adorable little girl and her friends to help kids learn and speak Spanish. And if that doesn’t sound like the makings of a good movie, then don’t worry, that’s not the film that Paramount is interested in making with “Dora and the Lost City of Gold.”
As seen in the first trailer for the ‘Dora’ adaptation, the young adventurer has morphed into a teenager, who is attempting to assimilate in 2019 teen culture after growing up in “the jungle.” Of course, that would also make a fairly boring film, so the plot somehow puts Dora and her new...

KollywoodThe film is going to be her second release of the year.Digital NativeNayanthara, whose films Aramm, Dora, and Velaikkaran were well received last year, is gearing up for the release of upcoming Tamil thriller Kolamavu Kokila a.k.a Co Co. Directed by debutant Nelson Dilip Kumar, the film is going to be her second release of the year. In the film, she plays a simple girl who, when pushed into an unexpected situation, has to fight for her own for survival. On Thursday, the makers via announced a poster that the film will hit the screens on August 10 worldwide. This means that Nayanthara and Kamal Haasan, whose Vishwaroopam 2 is also confirmed to release on the same date, will lock horns at the box-office. The film is rumoured to be inspired from the popular American show Breaking Bad. Apparently, Kolamavu is the colloquial word used in the film for cocaine. It’s also evident from the title poster of the film that the story does deal about drugs. Clarifying these reports, Nelson said in an interview to Hindustan Times that his film is his own work of fiction. “It’s a story about an ordinary girl in the most unexpected situation and how she fights her way out of it. We can’t make anything close to Breaking Bad because it’s really wild and we’re not prepared for such things.” The film also stars Saranya Ponvannan and Yogi Babu in important roles. The film has music by Anirudh Ravichander and recently there were reports that the young composer has played a cameo in the film. However, director Nelson subsequently quashed these reports in a few interviews. He went on to add that Anirudh’s music is the soul of the film. “As soon as Anirudh heard the story, he was excited to commence work. He’s taken very special care and worked on the film because he really liked the story,” he said. (Content provided by Digital Native)...
