Iron Squadron lands with a thud
Fluke_Skywalker20 November 2016
Warning: Spoilers
Plot; A stubborn young crew reject all offers of assistance as they attempt to defend their home planet from the Empire.

Uninspired episode sees the introduction of three new and thoroughly irritating characters and the continued waste, misuse--and in my opinion, misinterpretation--of Grand Admiral Thrawn. It's also starting to rub me the wrong way that far too often Kanan is an afterthought (literally sent packing for the entire episode after one or two lines) when he should be a focal point. That his dramatical sabbatical (to coin a phrase) is used to give the stage to the annoying punks of "Iron Squadron" only adds insult to injury.

Iron Squadron

As the first episode in a long while, this was a rather pointless one. It felt like those old cartoons where the main crew would meet another crew that reminds everyone a lot of the characters that we love. I had a hard time picking out the "plot" of this episode, and instead of giving a little development to one of the minor characters, it didn't give a lot to the overall narrative. The only sign of a connection is the appearance of Grand Admiral Thrawn, who has been absent for a majority of the episodes. I am missing a little more action from his side, but it was cool to see him in this episode, and to understand that he has a little bit of a background with some of the characters in the rebellion. There were some nice moments of humor, but the overall episode just fell flat. It was hard to find a plot in the thing, and the characters that our crew interacted with weren't as interesting as the writers would want them to be. The space battles were kinda good and there were some smart moves utilized, but the overall episode didn't have anything that was able to really get my attention locked that long.

The first episode in a long while that I just didn't much care for. I thought the new characters lacked a lot of charisma. It doesn't help that the one being rescued is just some hot-shot punk.

I think it's good to have episodes like this where the Rebels continue to help/recruit others for their cause, but this one just wasn't all that interesting due to the lack of engaging characters. There's a good story on here somewhere that's just lost.

I did love the animation and action. This isn't terrible. It's a watchable episode of Rebels!

The best thing in this episode is the continuation of developing the threat of Grand Admiral Thrawn. His sinister plotting and quiet manipulation is great.

The Iron Squadron are annoying and weak as characters but that is somewhat made up for by our rebel heroes doing the usual brave stuff.

Quite fun but nothing special.

My rating: 6.5/10.
