“Close to You” marks a reintroduction for Elliot Page, a screen presence at once warmly familiar and sharply redefined, finally established on his own terms. In his first film role since coming out as a trans man, the actor has evidently brought much of his own identity and experience to this sensitively observed story of a trans man cagily reunited with his family after a five-year period of estrangement. But Page’s performance isn’t moving merely for whatever parallels it might hold to his life: Rather, it’s a reminder of what a deft and perceptive actor he can be, capable of both naked emotional candor and acidic wit — both assets to a script that sometimes errs on the side of caution.

The actor makes a convincing big screen comeback as a man visiting his family for the first time since transitioning, but effective moments are offset by clunkiness
Dominic Savage’s work tends to focus on people, usually women, facing some form of disruptive challenge to their everyday life, specific and stressful and never anything but utterly believable. He drew out Gemma Arterton’s greatest performance in 2017’s Toronto premiere The Escape as a deeply unsettled woman wanting out of her responsibilities as wife and mother. His Channel 4 anthology series I Am… has introduced a range of characters at an intersection, from a devastating Vicky McClure grappling with her partner’s emotional abuse to recent Bafta winner Kate Winslet as a mother struggling with a daughter crippled by social media addiction. His preference for often mundane naturalism, with dialogue usually improvised, has teased out grounded, unshowy performances and unusual, instinctive...

Sam (Elliot Page) has been dreading this day for weeks, maybe entire years: The young trans man is heading home for a long-delayed family visit, back to the sleepy Canadian suburb he fled years earlier, this time more fully himself than ever, even if his own flesh and blood are — at least, he suspects — loathe to fully accept him as he is. And who is he?
In “Close to You,” we eventually learn that Sam is on a delayed calendar, stunted by the years he spent struggling before his somewhat recent transition, though crisper details are harder to come by. At one point, he mentions off-handedly that he graduated high school nearly twenty years ago (Page turned 36 a few weeks after production on the film wrapped), but he’s living a life closer to that of someone who just graduated. He lives in a friend’s house, he’s finding...

“1976,” the awaited first feature of Chile’s Manuela Martelli, has closed first new major territories for sales company Luxbox before its world premiere in Directors’ Fortnight later this upcoming week.
The film is produced out of Chile by writer-directors Omar Zúñiga (“The Strong Ones”) and Dominga Sotomayor (“Too Late to Die Young”) at auteur-focused Chile-based Cinestación (“Too Late to Die Young”) as well as Alejandra Garcia and Andrés Wood, another celebrated Chilean director (“Violeta Went to Heaven”) at Wood Productions. Nathalia Videla Peña and Juan Pablo Gugliotta at Argentina’s Magma Cine co-produce.
“1976” is set, as its title implies, in 1976, one of the bloodiest years of Augusto Pinochet’s hugely bloody dictatorship. Carmen, the wife of a well-heeled Santiago de Chile doctor heads off to her beach house to supervise its renovation during the holidays.
The local priest appeals to her to help cure a young man who’s escaped from jail.

John Aylward, an actor best known for his portrayals of Dr. Donald Anspaugh on ER and former DNC chairman Barry Goodwin on The West Wing, died this week at his home in Seattle. He was 75.
Aylward’s death overnight Monday was confirmed by his wife Mary Fields to his longtime agent, Mitchell K. Stubbs. He had been in declining health, according to Fields.
“I was shocked. He was a wonderful actor and a phenomenal human being,” Stubbs told Deadline. “He was a dream client, a friend and a dream person.”

Born and raised in Seattle, Aylward appeared in dozens of television series over the course of his more than four-decade career, but he is perhaps best remembered for his role as Dr. Donald Anspaugh in ER. Aylward joined the NBC series in the third season in the heavily recurring role and appeared in more than 70 episodes over 12 years.

It’s easy (and mostly correct) to assume that the majority of superhero television is based on comics. But Hollywood loves existing IP, which means there are plenty of other series on TV right now based on comic books or graphic novels that have nothing to do with super powers or saving the day.
Comics are much more than caped crusaders — graphic novels run the same genre gamut as literary novels, from journalism to sci-fi and plenty in between. Below, we’ve rounded up a bunch of TV series that you might not have realized were based on comic books. And so it goes. Star Wars Resistance ends, not with a bang, but with a series of bangs, a sort of “back to basics” sentiment that does a yeoman’s job of straight-forward, good ol’ fashion Star Wars action. “The Escape” resembles A New Hope more than anything else, with it’s all out breakout from the Star Destroyer, all phasers blasting and ships exploding. It’s not at all deep or clever, it’s not really rewarding in terms of character revelations or developments, and it’s not particularly the best visually or strongest directed episode of the series. In two of the last three years, this poll has come down to One vote. Together with Veronica Knox, an army intel specialist, Puller searches for his fugitive brother. Yorgos Lamthimos’ twisted period piece “The Favourite” led all films in nominations for the British Independent Film Awards (Bifa), which were announced on Wednesday in London.
The black comedy, which stars Olivia Colman, Emma Stone and Rachel Weisz in a tale of 18th century palace intrigue in England, was nominated in 13 categories, two shy of the record set last year by “Lady Macbeth.”
Its nominations come on the heels of three nominations and one award at the Gotham Independent Film Awards, which means that the film from a Greek director has been accepted as an American independent film by one awards body and as a British indie by another.

Yorgos Lanthimos’ Venice Special Grand Jury Prize winner The Favourite leads nominations for this year’s British Independent Film Awards with 13 in its court. The twisted take on the British monarchy and period cinema, which Fox Searchlight releases November 23 in North America, has nods for Venice Best Actress laureate Olivia Colman as well as for Best Film, Director, Screenplay and for its supporting cast Emma Stone and Rachel Weisz. The latter is also up for Best Actress in Oscar winner Sebastian Lelio’s Disobedience, which likewise scored a Best Film nom and put Rachel McAdams in the Supporting Actress category.
Following The Favourite is Bart Layton’s heist pic American Animals with 11 nominations, Michael Pearce’s Beast with 10 and Lynne Ramsay’s You Were Never Really Here scooping eight. Each is also competing in the Best British Independent Film race.
Bifa noted today that the nominations list demonstrates a record year for female representation, with over 40% of the individual nominations recognizing women in the industry across directing, writing, producing, performance and craft. Female nominees make up over 50% of the talent nominated in Best British Independent Film and dominate both Most Promising Newcomer and Breakthrough Producer.
Ramsay notably continues her long association with Bifa, scoring her third nomination for Best Screenplay and her second for Best Director. With her You Were Never Really Here, Joaquin Phoenix scores his second Bifa Best Actor nomination for his role as a tortured hitman in the psychological noir thriller.
Joe Cole (A Prayer Before Dawn), Rupert Everett (The Happy Prince), Charlie Plummer (Lean On Pete) and Steve Coogan (Stan & Ollie) round out Best Actor. The Best Actress category also features Gemma Arterton (The Escape), Maxine Peake (Funny Cow) and Jessie Buckley (Beast).
The Bifa ceremony will be held on Sunday December 2 at London’s Old Billingsgate. Below is the full list of nominations.

Holdovers likely to dominate UK box office this weekend.
It’s a soft-looking set of releases in the UK this weekend, which will mean holdover studio fare such as Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again (Universal), Ant-Man And The Wasp (Disney) and Mission: Impossible – Fallout (Paramount) will be looking to make use of the forecast break from the UK’s summer heatwave.
The Mamma Mia! sequel stayed top of the chart for the third straight week last weekend, moving to a mighty £39.3m, while Marvel’s Ant-Man sequel disappointed with a soft opening of £5m (for a superhero title).

You have to go back a while to when these interviews were conducted – at last year’s Toronto International Film Festival – but only now does Dominic Savage’s The Escape get its theatrical release; a compelling and profound drama that thrives in its naturalistic approach. We sat down with the two leading roles in Gemma Arterton and Dominic Cooper to discuss the project
Arterton tells us why it’s a tough film to watch back, and details the improvised nature of the production. She also discusses the freedom Savage gave his actors, and the comfortability she had with Cooper, which allowed for them both to flourish. She also speaks about the themes, of intangible unhappiness, and why her character confronts the issue of a destructive relationship head-on. She also tells us of her research for the role, and her continuing move into producing.

Marvel sequel to go up against Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again and Mission: Impossible – Fallout.
Expect another strong weekend at the UK box office, with Disney’s Ant-Man And The Wasp (released on Thursday August 2) taking on Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again and Mission: Impossible – Fallout.
The original Ant-Man opened with £4.8m in the UK, going on to make £19m – a somewhat below par score for a non-Avengers Marvel film. Black Panther and Thor: Ragnarok ended up on £53m and £30m respectively.
The sequel, once again starring Paul Rudd and Evangeline Lilly will face competition from the resurgent Mission: Impossible – Fallout,...

In the British drama The Escape, Gemma Arterton stars as a mother who walks out on her family, unable to cope. It’s one of several new films about parenthood with which many women will empathise
Never mind Lars von Trier torturing women and ducklings. Some of the most shocking scenes I have seen on screen this year arrive next month in a low-budget British relationship drama set in a suburban semi in Kent. The film is The Escape, starring Gemma Arterton as a 30-year-old stay-at-home mother, Tara, who abandons her family in a fug of depression and dissatisfaction. I almost couldn’t watch one excruciating scene, in which Tara, eyes glazed, voice flat and distant, tells her husband (Dominic Cooper) how she feels about their kids: “I don’t care about them. I don’t care if they finish their dinner. I don’t care if they go to...

ABC’s “Modern Family” was once the toast of the Emmys, winning Best Comedy Series five times (2010-14) from a whopping eight nominations. With increased competition from cable and streaming networks, will the recently concluded ninth season continue the show’s Emmy streak? As a refresher, “Modern Family” is currently tied with “Frasier” at five wins and eight nominations. Only four comedies in Emmy history earned more than eight series bids — “All in the Family” (9), “Cheers” (11) and “M*A*S*H” (11) — so “Modern Family” is hoping to join that esteemed list this year.
SEE2019 Emmys comedy queens showdown: Julia Louis-Dreyfus (‘Veep’) vs. Candice Bergen (‘Murphy Brown’)?
Created by Steven Levitan and Christopher Lloyd and produced by 20th Century Fox TV, “Modern Family” broke boundaries for its storylines of inclusion and acceptance. In the wake of sister company Fox News’ right-wing reporting, Levitan recently announced that he would be leaving Fox after “Modern Family” ends.

All hail the notorious Rbg. As Cannes premieres titles that will fill specialized release calendars, Ruth Bader Ginsberg biopic “Rbg” made the top 10 — and in just 180 theaters.
Also opening were “The Seagull” and “Beast,” neither of which rose to the level of standout in their initial results. Several other niche titles, led by “Boom for Real,” a new documentary on artist Jean-Michael Basquiat showed initial interest. Directed by Sara Driver, it is one of several standout current specialized titles directed by women, a significant parallel to the Palais protest Saturday in Cannes.
In addition to “Rbg,” co-directed by Betsy West and Julie Cohen, Claire Denis’ “Let the Sunshine In” is performing ahead of most recent subtitled films. “Revenge” from Coralie Fargeat had strong success in its initial streaming dates along with some theatrical play. Chloe Zhao’s “The Rider” is settling in for a decent run, while Lynne Ramsey’s...

Dissatisfied mothers and wives may be indie distributors' latest prestige-movie archetype as a new wave of female characters unhappy with traditional domestic roles stomp into theaters.
After late April’s Disobedience, which has Rachel McAdams and Rachel Weisz playing lovers who have an illicit extramarital affair in an Orthodox Jewish community, May sees Charlize Theron play a mother at her wits' end in Tully (which opened wide May 4), Gemma Arterton as a mother who flees her husband and children in The Escape (in limited release May 11) and Saoirse Ronan's young wife character pursue a marriage annulment and a brilliant music career in...

As The Escape begins, a woman studies her face in the mirror — the kind of moment we've seen countless times in movies. But we've never before seen Gemma Arterton, who plays the character, explore psychological depths as intense as those she inhabits here. The film poses existential questions with an unblinking, Bergmanesque intimacy, its emotional topography first revealed in a scene as remarkable as the looking-glass sequence is familiar: A morning quickie lays bare the chasm, perhaps unbridgeable, between a husband and wife.
