Different Versions
talonjensen8 June 2019
First there are two versions of this. The original is 65 episodes. I first watched it on Netflix with only 24 episodes. My wife watched the full 65 episodes and watched the last two episodes on Netflix with me, she couldn't stop complaining about all the missing information, including people never appearing in the 24 episodes. She was very upset with the ending.

It did make me understand some of the crazy things in the Netflix version. Scene cuts and sound changes that looked like poor production values were because of editing out two-thirds of the episodes. Half of the last episode is flashbacks with one new scene at the end.

Still, this is better than your average Asian drama. It is the standard fat person, Mi Duo (Yan Tang), who suddenly gets thin. There is just enough background to see her life in a fat suit. She is seriously hurt in an accident and undergoes major surgery becoming thin and beautiful. This gives her more confidence and changes her life, she begins working for a company where the CEO, Xiao Liang (Rain), was once kind to her as a fat person, so naturally she will fall in love with the CEO. But, she does have a childhood friend, Lei Yi-MIng (Jin Luo) who is now a doctor, also lives in Shanghai, and, while a former womanizer, is just beginning to understand he loves Mi Duo.

The rest of the drama is just the normal break up for this reason, get back together, break up for that reason, get back together, etc.

My wife insists that I watch the full version, so I will come back and update this review afterwards.

My wife tells me that in real life Yan Tang and Jin Luo are a couple. If you like them you can also see them in Jin xiu Wei Yang (2016), which I have seen and liked it better than Diamond Lover (2015).

A love story themed around identity and social acceptance
harvieG17 September 2021
... With everything else thrown in. A love quadrangle or pentangle that contrasts the different approaches each uses to "win" their love interest.

The main character who undergoes a life changing surgery following a severe car accident which opens the door for her suddenly to pursue the man of her dreams The admirably sacrificial selfless rock of a childhood friend whose life revolves around rescuing his damsel in distress The actress who found unrequited love in an unexpected place The rightful heir who, positioned for all the wins in life shows a disappointing shallowness of character in love; buffeted by family and business politics and naïveté navigating the emergence of his scheming old flame The manipulative ex girlfriend who returned to reclaim the love she gave up for money and the shameless unspeakable lengths she went through to sabotage his relationships; her way to win him back?

The positional "heir" who manipulated and caused endless trouble for his brother whom he has made a rival of; and his relationships The father who showed the wisdom to change his mind toward acceptance and forgiveness

A solid cast and Impressive wardrobe for MeiDuo.

The script had its Gems and shining snippets but not always believable nor made sense.

But then it's Chollywood. Storyline had pockets of gaps and the characters not always believable nor their actions but overall an cenjoyable drama though the repeated twists and turns got tiresome towards the end.

Mi MeiLi/ Mi Duo's character was a triumph whilst XiaoLiang was a little shallow. The plots at times were outlandish and repeated offenders a great annoyance. But all good in the end though it came a little abruptly.

Script could've been further tightened. But well done if you've remade a 64 episode show into 24.

Entertaining ugly duckling story with the coolest opening song
magnoliacream24 April 2022
Entertaining story about obese jewelry designer Mi Mei Li (Tiffany Tang) who becomes a beauty after undergoing cosmetic surgery and attracts Tesiro Diamond company president Xiao Liang (Rain). Luo Jin also stars as Lei Yiming, a gynecologist who has been Mi Mei Li's best friend and secret lover. Dilraba Dilmurat completes the foursome as gorgeous Gao Wen, a spokesperson for Tesiro Diamond.

The story is interesting but I was so torn between the male leads I didn't know who to root for up to the end. This is the first show I saw Dilraba in and I remember wondering why she wasn't a national sensation yet. Another unforgettable thing about this drama is the opening theme song by Rain. This is one of a few drama series where I did not skip the opening sequence.

Forgiveness

The show also ended with unforgiveness between the two main characters and that should not be, there should have been closure. The female lead went through a lot to get President Xaio to fall in love with her then she just threw that away. Ridiculous. Also I was so thrilled watching the series, I felt happy, it lifted my spirits however fell back down with the ending. Love cannot be defeated.

Warning: Spoilers
I sooo loved this series, but my heart was broken with the ending. Mi Duo should have married Rain after all they went through instead of settling for the other character as she ended up marrying someone she didnt love. I think they should do the ending over with a happy ending. That would be a true love story.
