Sound of illness/silence
kosmasp19 November 2018
As another reviewer put it: this is not for everyone. Reviewer was quite short in how they view things. Statements involved that the movie is boring, slow and dark. As the saying goes: One man's trash, is another man's treasure (obviously applies to women too).

In this case you have to know that this is not at all trying to be entertaining. There are quite a few passages that are just silent. You get looks and actors expressing their emotions or the scene/story by not talking. If that sounds tedious to you, the movie might not be something you will find rewarding to watch. The interaction and the acting is really top notch though. So if this does float your boat, it will haunt you and grip you (in the best way possible)

The Spanish will save the art of cinema.

I have no words. This film truly is a masterpiece.

Astonishing film. Incredible well done in every technical aspect. Probably the best "Netflix" release this year. Left me a sad boy. Need to call my mom right now.

Forgivnes and acceptance. Despite all we do in life there are only two certain things: we are born and we die. And between these two points there is only one person enough attached to us, mother. You can judge parents actions towards kids, but you cannot replace them ever. A must see one.

A slow-moving and downbeat film with nice interpretations from Barbara Lennie and Susi Sanchez
ma-cortes30 April 2020
An upper-class woman called Anabel : Susi Sanchez, living luckly with his husband and daughter : Greta Fernandez who is actually daughter of actor Eduard Fernandez , while preparing a dinner to wealthy people meets her daughter Chiara, Barbara Lennie, whom she had abondoned long time ago. As Anabel left to her and to his previous husband : Richard Bohringer, over 30 years ago, to marry another rich man : Miguel Angel Sola'. After a failed attempt by the marriage to give Chiara money that she subsequently refuses, then the latter asks for a rare request : to spend Anabel and Chiara get together at their previous home where she lived . As they go by car to the French Pyrinees to a little location in the mountains . Along the way, Anabel attempts to know the reason for the strange beheaving of Chiara who is usually drunk, killing a dove, injuring a dog and other weird conducts.

This is an intense drama plenty of moving scenes and strange happenings . An interesting film but pretty dull and a little bit boring. Being painly tiring and slow moving, though made with credibility and adequate style. It is a brooding and thoughtful film with an unexpected and surprising ending.

It packs a colorful and evocative cinematography by Ricardo De Gracia, shot on location in Montseny, Barcelona, Andorra, French Pyrinees , Mars de Mollo, La Preste, France. As well as atmospheric and appropriate musical score by Nino Casal. The motion picture was professionally directed by Ramon Salazar, thouh it results to be dull . Ramon is a good writer and director, as he has written successful films as 30 metros sobre el cielo, Tengo ganas de ti, Amnesia. Salazar is ha craftsman who directed provoking and stirring films suc as : 10.000 noches en ninguna parte, 20 centimetros and his best one : Piedras or Stones. Rating 5.5/10. Passable and acceptable.

Dark, brooding and mysterious... and empty.
Vinicius821 December 2021
The photography in La Enfermedad del Domingo will capture you from the moment the movie opens up. It won't be for another minute and thirty seconds until the movie cuts to the next scene. That scene alone sets the somber tone the rest of the film will be silently brooding over. And that scene alone will tell you if you should watch the remaining hour and fifty minutes of this motion picture. From this moment onward, the rhythm never picks up.

Having said that, know that a ruminating paced movie is no foe of mine, and through its mystery (and misery) that pace was fully justified. However, halfway through its run time, the mystery gave way to a more melodramatic approach that did not stick well. At that point, the film did not make space for new questions, neither did it answer previous ones. Its somber, brooding status felt suddenly distant and empty. La Enfermedad del Domingo superfluous and fleeting characterization only worked with the additional threatening atmosphere of the unknown capabilities of a bitter human in pain. The vengeful victimized soul and redemption-seeking, guilt-ridden duo had unspeakable force driving the movie forward from the get-go. When that was lost, the film also lost its edge and started ruminating on the simplistic causal effect of lost years and abandonment. From that point onward, the only thing that sustained my interest was both actresses pressure pot of emotional turmoil performances.

Coming up on the finale of the mother-daughter cathartic retreat, nothing the movie constructed insofar indicated such staged pseudo-arquetypical conclusion. It felt removed from the continuum of the narrative and succeeded only in being pretentious. Even so, I don't consider the film, overall, bad. La Enfermedad del Domingo has some masterful camerawork and photography. Noteworthy performances. And an idea that did not bloom into catharsis or something of substance. But it's a good idea nonetheless.

Artistic masterpiece; Realistic; Visually stunning; Emotionally moving
parnildh14 January 2021
For the 1st one minute or so, there's an an image of a forest of gray, leafless trees, a visual metaphor for the dark story that the film is. The film is so visually stunning that they look like painting canvas on the move. The artistic choice of the director of not having a background score makes the film even more life-like. The performances are understated and just incredible, especially Barbara's. There is hardly any shaft of sunlight throughout, which reflects the darkness of the protagonist's life. I am in love with this film. I have watched it twice already. Just can't get enough of it.

Warning: Spoilers
What a wonderful reflection on life. what a great piece of film making. i loved it from beginning to end, with only one "criticism", the last two frames.

i probably missed the deeper meaning, but they seemed somehow out of place. which is all the more astonishing since this film is so well crafted and framed and told. so it must be my ignorance.

anyways. easily 10 out of 10.

Phenomenal film
martinus-4616216 December 2019
One of the best films I saw last years. It's intensity is truly haunting. It's a shame it has only a handful of reviews. Some of its scenes will never leave my mind. My sincere compliments to the director, please give this great talent more airplay. The acting in the film was also top-notch. Susi Sánchez should get twenty oscars for this role.

Mysterious and dark
Natural_Chestnut19 June 2018
This movie contains beautiful environmental shots. The nature, trees and water are give a wonderful effect. The movie has a dark edged character. Some scenes are not completely balanced with the main subjects of the movie and needed to be cut off in my opinion. The story is emotional and it thrilled my feelings especially in the end.

Chiara's waiting
marcospenajr26 November 2018
Very early on I developed a somewhat negative feeling about the last hours of Sundays. A mixture of laziness, melancholy and anxiety. Laziness to have to sleep early and wake up in time for Monday's obligations; melancholy for feeling that there was still so much to do and little time available yet again (ah! Another Sunday that ends); and anxiety about another week-end and all that lay ahead of me. Reasons to feel all this? I'm not sure, but when I stop to think, I think I have some answers. But the focus here is not to deal with it. However, I understand it is important to say that today this feeling is already more than the result of habits, it is part of who I am. (I'm typing this text and now it's exactly 10:03 PM of a Sunday in June 2018. A real battle to fill another night of the first day of the week). I recall Aristotle's arguments in "Ethics to Nicomachus" as to how character is formed. Simplified and briefly, it corresponds to that old maxim: your actions become habits and these become your character. In the end, choosing your actions will shape your character. Aristotle calls this "prior choice". But the mainstream of psychology argues that character is formed by the conjunction of unconscious defense mechanisms. Whether by choices (conscious or not) or by defense mechanisms, the fact is that for me the second half of Sunday is the expression of what is empty. Last week I was looking for a movie to watch and I came across the title "Sunday's illness" (in English). That was enough to make me decide to see him. (Undoubtedly I had a direct and immediate match). If the English version of the title was more honest to the original "La enfermedad del domingo", I would certainly look for more details to decide whether to watch it or not. By allowing me to make the decision based solely on the title, I exposed myself to the risk of wasting time with a poor quality film. To my joy and delight, the Spanish film is excellent, profound and makes every minute of every scene and all that invested in thinking about it and feel its impact after its end. The script brings a feeling of mystery, which leads the viewer to stay tuned and feel instigated to await the outcome of the story. As a complex puzzle, we have to observe well to build the complete picture. From the first to the last scene, this is the process for who is following the fit of events. Plaudits to the screenwriter (and film director) Ramón Salazar. If in the role of writer the Spaniard shows all his talent, it is not possible to say the same about his direction. Many scenes are conducted based on some exaggeration. Not the exaggerated, flamboyant, just the opposite, an excess of apathy that makes many passages less plausible. At certain times, minor corrections in posture, physiognomy or intonation of the actors would be enough to raise the film's standard. Here comes my reading about the actings: except for Barbara Lennie playing Chiara, who embodies her character and makes us believe she is a real individual (especially by the expression of her pain), all others deliver very little as a scenic result. Which is a shame, because in representing Anabel in all its complexity of life, Susi Sánchez could have been one of the highlights of the film. Unfortunately, she does not excite us as she would have if directed better. If Salazar's intention was to put verisimilitude, she left us only a very unreal coldness. The real highlight, our great delight, is the photograph given to us there. Ricardo de Gracia, photograph director, was really great doing his job. From what I have been able to ascertain, this is his only job in such a position. I wish he could have other opportunities to execute this talent; Keep his head, hands and eyes so sharp; and that I may enjoy his future works. In "Sunday's illness", he was able to paint the beauty of pain, constant pain, intense and deep. He still manages to wrap it all up in a nebulous atmosphere, while presenting how the visual details can be gratifying to the soul (of course, merit shared with the director). The color palette that applies, mostly in pastel tones, is extremely coherent with the whole movie's picture. Faced with the pain, the emptiness and the disillusioned anguish of Chiara with all that she has lacked in practically all her life - which, however simple and common, is extremely essential and she knows she has not even a chance to conquer - I can't be so negative about my Sundays. All I've ever felt I lack these days is pure ridiculous nonsense in the face of what Chiara had hoped to have in her own.

Great and tender movie about love and sacrifice. How a child can bring to life, a real life, full of feelings her mother. A mother brought from living high society life to her grounds. Love it. Tears are inevitable.

MOVE OVER CASABLANCA, YOU'VE GOT COMPETITION.
ewleeds26 November 2020
This film is a milestone in brilliance, filming, casting, scenery and script. The most sobering thought about it is: This is one of the few films that makes Hollywood look 2nd class, a shanty town of trumped up ideas and action. I have always been known to be a good writer, good with ideas but I just got knocked out in round one by this wonderful film. It reduces all your other great films to the land of make believe they came from meaning you can keep all your Maltese Falcons, your How Green was my Valleys, avoid the Sound of Music, that's how great this film is?

Where does it now lie in my personal memory bank, it sits with Casablanca, the Wizard of Oz, Shane, the Shawshank Redemption and My Man Godfrey. The star of the show was undoubtedly the mother, she carried this film up, up and away into stardom. An Italian film, a great Italian film, which scored 200% for the greatest film opening sequence ever. If I had a spare $20 million dollars, I'd study this script, I would steal it, I would copy it, turn it into a Western starring an Alan Ladd character (RIP) and cast the daughter has a gun-fighter seeking to gain peace in the way-out-west world. I am going to watch it again, just to educate myself, just to forget how mediocre I am, and most films are. Thank you to the producers and production crew. Thank you. Signed: A limey from England.

Great performance, realistic
monazidane13 December 2022
Chiara's relationship with her mother suggests that it is a relationship of anger, hatred, and coldness, but behind this coldness and depression, she hides an eternal love and longing for her mother's embrace, as if her life stopped in front of her window.

I imagine her dreaming every night of her mother's return.

I find the performance of the mother a masterpiece, how she was able to go from the state of boasting, arrogance and strength that she showed through her costumes to a woman who no longer cares about her image to the extent that she travels to Paris wearing her pajamas trying to understand her daughter.

After i had been watching sci-fi american movies for a year . I watched this movie. Off course this is not the movie that fans of those kind movies or soap-operas liked and that is why it is not high ranked as those movies.

They find it slow and boring because they Don't look to cinema as an art but just entertainment

But it was really beautiful and impressing movie. Somehow dark but kind of movies that make u think after watching. A rich and cruel mother that left her daughter for 30 years accept to kill her sickdaughter because she asked.

GREAT WORK , WORK OF ART !
gustavojensen-9825910 May 2023
When I saw one of the covers of Sunday's Void with two actresses with opacity and a lot of glow in the image, I already reiterated some kind of relationship between the two characters and a dream environment in the midst of reality, but I didn't expect such a spectacular and engaging work. . THE MANAGEMENT was brilliant in every aspect, we started in the solitary world of CHIARA ( Bárbara lennie ) until we found her mother ABABEL (suzi sanchez) through a crack, in all her power and glamour, but that soon took a turn and we saw that not everything it's perfect on her. The way they are presented, how the public learns about their kinship without mystery, the looks from one to the other without words, the psychology of the relationship is something phenomenal, the shots chosen by Ramón Salazar can be studied one by one, and the usual mystery can happen something that even Hitchcock would give a 10, and the question that stays in the viewer's mind is the same one that ANABEL asks -What do you want from me? The fury attack, her smiles and her instability are perfectly acted by Bárbara playing CHIARA as well as the expressionless seriousness of ABABEL that only in her face can we read her entire interpretation. Magnificent performances Very beautiful photography, sometimes cold, sometimes sephia with glow Finally, Empty Sunday is a complete work that we fully focus on just one relationship. Direction, acting, photography, script, everything fits together and we have a great work, a work of art. This movie should have higher rating!
mitsuee19 September 2023
If you like action movies dont watch this. If you dont mind slow pace, this is your movie. If you like talking or being in touch with emotions, feelings and traumas, this is your movie. There's almost no guide, but its the faces and the feelings that gives the most talk. I cried several times. Also the actresses deserve awards, both of them were engaged in the trauma, you could feel the tensión or the sadness . Also the ending was something unexpected and i honestly liked it. The scenery was pretty good. I loved everything about this movie. Hollywood sucks .. . Spanish movies are better ! 9 out of 10.
