Marc Maron: Sam Sylvia

Quotes

  • Arthie Premkumar : Hey, how was the meditation retreat?

[suddenly notices the alcohol on Sam's breath]

Arthie Premkumar : Whoa. What is that smell?

Sam Sylvia : Bourbon and despair. Where is Justine?

Arthie Premkumar : Uh, she probably spent the night at Billy's.

Sam Sylvia : Billy? Who the fuck is Billy?

Ruth Wilder : Oh, see, that sounded very paternal.

    Sam Sylvia : Shut up.

Arthie Premkumar : He's this guy. He delivers pizza. Are you coming in the limo with us?

Ruth Wilder : Sam's gonna follow us there.

Arthie Premkumar : That's probably better.

    Ruth Wilder : Okay, thanks.

    [Arthie runs to the limo]

Ruth Wilder : Look. She's not gonna miss shooting the pilot.

Sam Sylvia : [sighs]  I think she's gone. I-I'd be gone if I were her.

Ruth Wilder : You know, if she's anything like you, she's stubborn and confrontational, so, go find her. But, brush your teeth first. I'll keep things moving.

  • [a drunk Sam arrives at the motel]

Ruth Wilder : What's going on? I left a million messages with your...

[notices the heavy smell of alcohol]

Ruth Wilder : service. Jesus. You smell like a distillery.

Sam Sylvia : Well, yeah, that's what happens if you, you drink for three days straight.

Ruth Wilder : Well, I told everyone you were at Esalen meditating. So, go take a shower, and meet us at the Hayworth.

    Sam Sylvia : Wait. Why?

Ruth Wilder : Sam! We are making this thing. Today. Bash's mom gave us a ballroom. Jenny's doing costumes, Sheila's on sound, I did the props. We are all hanging on by a thread.

Sam Sylvia : Justine's my kid.

    [pause]

    Ruth Wilder : Oh.

Sam Sylvia : She told me at that fucking party. And I didn't... You know, I didn't handle it well, but, but... that's no surprise. But I mean, look at me. I'm no... I'm no father figure. I mean...

Ruth Wilder : Stop feeling sorry for yourself. Go talk to her.

Sam Sylvia : I don't know what to say. I mean, fuck, I don't even know which room is hers.

    [pause]

Ruth Wilder : All right, come on. Come on. Come on.

  • Regina : Justine? Uh, uh, someone is here to see you.

    [Sam arrives in the house]

Regina : You kids want anything?

Billy Offal : No. Thanks, Mom.

Sam Sylvia : I'll take some coffee.

    Regina : Oh.

    Sam Sylvia : Thank you.

Justine Biagi : How did you find me?

Sam Sylvia : I called the pizza place. I ordered a pizza. I shook down the kid who brought it, and he sang like a canary.

    [looks at Billy]

Sam Sylvia : So you must be the famous Billy.

    [Billy stands up]

Sam Sylvia : Relax with the standing and sticking your chest out. I'm just here to talk.

Justine Biagi : I don't have anything to say to you.

Sam Sylvia : Look, I'm sorry I tried to fuck you, okay? I-If you'd told me you were my daughter, I would never had done that.

[pause, then Sam turns around to look at Regina]

    Regina : Milk? Sugar?

Sam Sylvia : Oh, uh, black. Thank you.

Justine Biagi : So this is my fault.

Sam Sylvia : Look, I get that there's no great way to deliver this news, okay? But, but, but coming out here and pretending to audition for a show that I'm directing, and then following me around like some crazed fangirl, I mean, definitely, you know, made it, you know, worse. Th-That's all I'm saying.

Justine Biagi : I just... wanted to meet you. That was it. That was all I'd figured out. It wasn't like... some diabolical plan.

Sam Sylvia : Is your name really Justine?

Justine Biagi : Yes. Justine Victoria Biagi.

Sam Sylvia : That's a nice name. So, are you coming to the show? We've got a ballroom or something down at the Hayworth.

Justine Biagi : I don't actually care about wrestling. I didn't do any of this so I could wrestle.

Sam Sylvia : All right. Well, listen, kid. I-It can only get better from here. I-I think. I hope. That, that's what I'm holding on to.

  • Debbie Eagan : Shot of tequila. Thank you.

Sam Sylvia : Hey. What the hell are you doing out here? You, you're the fucking title match. I mean, get backstage, get dressed.

Debbie Eagan : Well, Sam, you left, so, everyone had to make decisions.

Sam Sylvia : What are you talking about? I mean, this whole thing builds to the U.S. versus Russia.

Debbie Eagan : Ruth has a whole contingency plan. It's, trust me. It'll be fine.

Sam Sylvia : What? Is she gonna wrestle Keith?

Debbie Eagan : Relax. Ruth could wrestle herself and be entertaining.

    Sam Sylvia : You're a fucking quitter.

    Debbie Eagan : I'm a quitter?

[Sam nods while Debbie drinks her tequila shot]

Debbie Eagan : Can we get this guy some coffee?

  • Sam Sylvia : What the hell are these camera guys doing? You're in each other's shots! Get... Just... Jesus Christ.

Justine Biagi : Next time, maybe you should give them some direction.

    [pause]

Sam Sylvia : Yeah, well, next time... you know, don't fucking run away so I have to come looking for you when I'm supposed to be directing a goddamn television show.

    [pause]

Justine Biagi : Costumes look good.

Sam Sylvia : Yeah. Who the fuck knows?

Justine Biagi : Might cut together.

    Sam Sylvia : Maybe

    [pause]

Justine Biagi : You wanna make out again?

    Sam Sylvia : What?

    Justine Biagi : Kidding. Jeez.

  • Debbie Eagan : What the fuck was that?

Sam Sylvia : What? You guys had your sneaky little plan, I had mine.

    Ruth Wilder : It's called a work.

Sam Sylvia : Well, mine was called, 'Don't be fucking predictable.'

Ruth Wilder : Ours wasn't predictable. It was a tag-team match into a double-cross into a phoenix rising from the crowd, which is all very surprising.

Sam Sylvia : Yeah, and then the American hero wins the Crown? Come on.

Debbie Eagan : So, what? Now it's all about trying to win the Crown back from Welfare Queen?

Sam Sylvia : Yeah. The money's in the chase. I think I'm gonna roll credits over this mayhem.

    [Sam walks toward the ring]

Ruth Wilder : I think our match was good.

Debbie Eagan : I mean, I'm sure I'll hate it when I see it, but it felt good.

Ruth Wilder : Debbie, we were great.

    [pause]

Ruth Wilder : You wanna grab a drink?

Debbie Eagan : No. We're not there.
