"The Test" is one of the best episodes of any TV show I have ever seen in my entire life. I guess this is just personal bias. I go to TVTropes so often and this episode was nothing but making fun of tropes. You can count on Sarah G. Lato to be the meta person for this show as she always tries to invoke tropes. I think more tropes are made fun of in this episode than any other episode of any show I've ever even seen. As for the plot. Gumball takes an online personality test and is labeled a "loser". He tries to stop being cynical, but Tobias ends up becoming the new main character. I guess it's not quite breaking the fourth wall.
We get direct references to Christmas Special, Clip Show, and Two Timer Date. The Laugh Track is mocked endlessly throughout the second half of the episode. This is why Gumball is my favorite character of the 2010's. He is easily the funniest and unlike Dipper actually got into a steady romantic relationship. He's more of a jerk and much dumber but dang is he a loyal boyfriend. In this very episode, he really goes berserk when Tobias steals his girlfriend, Penny. I think every trope known to man has been made fun of in this show and this is easily the best episode that shows it off. It's weird how a "loser" is the only modern cartoon character with an actual girlfriend!
Oh, and they also make fun of All Just A Dream, Kid Appeal Character, Pun, and Sad Trombone. Oh, and jumping the shark. Sarah gets really mad with how the show is being flooded with clichés, realizing she's gone too far with invoking tropes. This is exactly why I adore this show so much. I have never laughed harder and more consistently in any other kid's show but this and this shows it off perfectly. Luckily, the characters are so unique and so much fun, you can't help but get absorbed into everything. If you're a fan of anything in pop culture. **** for my favorite episode of my favorite comedy kid's show.
