Will there be a "Boule Et Bille 3"?
dbdumonteil24 August 2018
"Boule Et Bill " is a charming comic strip ,created by Roba in 1959;it mainly revolves around the family home ,Boule, his parents ,mom, who's the perfect housewife and papa, who works in an advertising agency, his dog Bill ,and his tortoise Caroline; recurrent characters include his good pal Pouf (who cannot see cause a tuft of hair hides his eyes),and cat Caporal.Their adventures consist of one page gags ,which make them hard to transfer to the screen ;I have not seen the first effort ,but "2" is a complete fiasco.

It begins with a spate of dirty words and includes crude scenes :there was never,in a month of Sundays , vulgarity in Roba's often witty mini-stories.

1°) The adults :it's a disaster .Frank Dubosc as daddy ,overplays and is totally unbearable ;the actress playing his boss is worse, it looks like they had Cruella in mind (and they borrow a lot from "101 dalmatians " ,in the scenes in the park); Mathilde Seigner and the school teacher manage to save something from the wreckage ,but all that concerns the grown-ups was written by morons :I wonder if they had ever read one album!

2)The animals : dog Bill can communicate (mainly with his ears ) with his family ,and there is no problem with his fellow animals in the comics ;in the movie ,they use voices over to make them talk (probably borrowed from the "101 dalmatians " ,the (mediocre) movie ,not the excellent cartoon );they even desperately try to integrate tortoise Caroline into the plot !

3 ) The children :the subplot concerning them is certainly less bad than the rest; the newcomer ,Wilfrid (probably inspired by Roba's Gérard ) ,is a snob pretentious little brat whose dad is a brave cop who made the headlines in the newspapers ,and who makes Boule jealous by stealing his sweetheart Charlotte .There's even a good scene when the shoolteacher wants to take her pupils to visit Gerard's house to see dad's collection of weapons (insightful critic by Boule) ;too bad they did not develop this side of the story for Wilfrid has a dark side to him ;un fortunately it degenerates into a sidecar race and a an improbable scene with a hand grenade .

We are two thousand light years from Roba's comics !

For a movie aimed at the children's market ,we can wonder why,one more time ,the songs are in English : Bobby Vinton's "Mister Lonely " was covered by Johnny Hallyday as "Quand Revient La Nuit " all the same !and the lyrics are similar.

truly bad adaptation of a classical "bande dessinée"

Warning: Spoilers
For many years, Belgian artist Jean Roba (1930-2006) drew a comic book strip about the adventures of a lively red-headed boy and his faithful cocker spaniel. The sweetly comical and/or surreal adventures of "Boule & Bill" - in Dutch, Bollie & Billie - delighted generations of Belgian readers. In fact the various albums soon charmed children and families all over Europe : millions of copies have been sold, translated into a multitude of languages.

This movie, however, does not strike the right tone, either because it tried and failed or else because it didn't try to begin with. (I strongly adhere to the second theory.) The movie is boring and inspirationless rather than lively and concise. What's worse, the original innocence of the comic books gets replaced by far nastier things such as meanness and madness.

Consider the basic premise of the movie : a father draws a sweetly jolly and funny comic inspired by his own idyllically happy home life. His new female editor tells him to stuff it : she needs darker, more tormented and conflicted work. The artist, who does not challenge this strange assumption, tries to become a "peintre maudit". (At one point he invites a random neighbour to slap him in the face, hard, so as to obtain the necessary artistic street credibility.) He also tries to undermine the joyful harmony of his little family, finding all kind of pretexts to embarass or demean his wife and son. Even the inoffensive family dog becomes a target for his schemes. Nice, isn't it ? I'm sure kids all over Europe are going to appreciate the idea of a father deliberately sabotaging his young son.

Other elements are inept, rather than repulsive. For instance, the scenes where the cocker spaniel and his canine friends meet and "speak" are deeply unconvincing. Basically, the viewer sees images of dogs looking at each other or sitting/walking close to each other. If there's any kind of communication going on, it must happen through telepathy...

I'm adding a second star because "Boule & Bill 2" contains a likeable evocation, through sets and scenery, of a particular time and place - but that's it, no more than two stars for this unpleasant misfire. Do treat your children to a funnier and kinder comedy...

Nice

It's a nice family movie for families who look for a movie without profane language. Avarage plot, acting and shooting. Its worth seeing it. Some part of it is a little exaggerated but acceptible.
