Not a bad show but let down by actors with the presence of boiled potatoes.
msghall20 May 2019
This is a cheaply-filmed movie that is competently written and directed. The plot keeps you watching but the execution leaves you wanting. You need actors who can elicit empathy from the viewer; there is little of that here. Simply put, the lead actors lack the charisma needed to involve us in an otherwise serviceable film. Worth a watch as long as your expectations are held in check. Enjoy the scenery; it's the true star of this middling venture.

Even better than Le Tour or a BBC Documentary if you want to get a good nap.

On the perceptive edge
TheLittleSongbird12 November 2018
Am a big fan of mystery thrillers, have been for a long time and the Brits have often done them brilliantly. Love the setting, which is so beautiful and evokes a lot of nostalgia within me. Also 'Winter Ridge' had a really good idea for a story. So there were more than enough reasons to see 'Winter Ridge' regardless of its polarising critical reception, which did admittedly slightly lower moderate expectations.

Seeing 'Winter Ridge', my feelings are somewhat mixed, feelings of finding it thankfully better than had been said by several while feeling a little disappointed too. Am not going to be one of those passionately defending the film, there are faults here and quite big ones. Am also not going to be one panning the film because there are good points as well and enough to make the film watchable.

The best asset of 'Winter Ridge' is the production values. Especially the locations, which are both beautiful and atmospheric. Frequently holiday in the Devon area visiting grandparents so there was a lot of nostalgia filling up inside me. The film is stylishly shot too, lots of class on this front, and the editing is cohesive at least. The music is haunting enough, being neither too low key or too intrusive. 'Winter Ridge' also starts off unsettlingly and suspensefully, indicating a lot of promise.

On the most part the acting is better than average, with the most emotionally committed performances coming from Ian Pririe and Hannah Waddingham. The human drama elements fare much better than the mystery ones, there is some genuine heart, complex and mature themes are handled tactfully and the character relationships while not illuminating make sense and worth investing in. The characters didn't bore or annoy me at least and there are far worse cases in film, and anywhere in fact, of irritational and illogical decision making and vague motivations.

'Winter Ridge' however did disappoint in other areas. Matt Hookings doesn't really convince in the lead role, somehow he didn't seem comfortable and dramatically and emotionally he came over as rather inert. The direction is uneven, never incompetent but there are unsure and plodding moments (too many of them unfortunately).

Despite a promising start, 'Winter Ridge' quickly and too early on goes downhill. The mystery/thriller element contains few surprises, very easy to figure out and severely lacking in twists and turns to keep one guessing, and just feels too simple and like a generic mystery/thriller film on Lifetime. The pacing badly plods, so the film drags a lot and feels longer than it actually is, and it just feels bland and stiff with some daft moments too that one has to seriously refrain from laughing. The dialogue should have been much tighter and the flow doesn't feel natural, while the ending is so absurd it takes one out of the film.

Concluding, watchable but there was definitely a much better film in there somewhere. 5/10 Bethany Cox

slow, boring, no life
bearrawreat19 September 2018
Oh my. I never really like to be negative, but this was bad. I did almost watch until the end, but it was a slow build up to a predictable conclusion and so i just switched it off.

The acting was almost embarrassing, had it not been for a couple of bit parts who I felt sorry for as I had no idea why they had let themselves be part of the production. I was constantly waiting for the film to pick up and the slow, drama-class wooden acting, with too long pauses in the script did not help. Maybe it was the direction.

It reminded me of a tense crime drama on the television, but without any sense of tension or drama and the crime was pretty weak in its portrayal.

I just feel bad for those involved.

Been generous cos of the beautiful landscapes of Lynton and Lynmouth....
Fella_shibby30 January 2019
Wud love to retire at a place like this. The film is about a detective who's wife is on a life support cos of a drunken driver. The detective is chasing a serial killer who's killing dementia patients. Elderly dementia patients? Come on man. The whodunnit becomes very predictable, the motive too becomes very easy to guess. The ending was kinda lame too. The problem with the film apart from being formulaic is that it moves with a very slow pace without any suspense or tension. The 80 mins runtime becomes too long cos of the non engaging script. Well it cud have been a good 45 mins short film or an episode. Nonetheless, the cinematography is good n the effort behind the film is a sincere one.

Very Bad, Do NOT Believe the Positive Reviews
brightspark-7823921 September 2018
I am a big fan of British drama/thriller type movies so was easily sucked in by the positive reviews here. I can only guess that said reviews must have emanated from people who are associated with the movie - or fiends thereof - because there is no way any discerning viewer could rate this movie higher than poor.

Acting and storyline are extremely amateurish... acting is cringeworthy at times. Storyline is predictable and cliched. Please don't get sucked in as I did... this movie is really bad!

I disagree with the descenters as being a stupid film, the writing purpose was to focus on relationships, so if your looking for adventure/action this is not your film.

Let her go
nogodnomasters16 October 2018
Warning: Spoilers
Winter metaphorically is the final stages of life. In a small town, the older folks who have dementia are being euthanized by a serial euthanizer. Detective Ryan Barnes (Matt Hookings) is on the case. His wife is in a coma from a drunk driver who is also the prime suspect.

We do get to see the killer who is thin and runs like a gazelle. The film is a slow-moving drama about "letting go." The problem is the message was lost or confounded by design. This is more on the order of a Lifetime film.

Guide: F-word. No sex or nudity.

A solid British drama which peaks when it's not trying to imitate the style of an American thriller.
RA_Seaneth20 September 2018
The likes of TV shows and movies such as Midsomer Murders, Miss Marple and more recently Broadchurch and Beast have proven that being a resident of an aesthetically perfect British town is severely detrimental to your health.

The same applies to Dom Lenoir's Winter Ridge, in which a serial killer who is targeting the elderly is on the loose in a picturesque seaside village. Detective Ryan Barnes and his newcomer partner Tom Harris are tasked with solving the case, but Ryan is struggling to come to terms with a personal trauma happening at the same time. His wife is in a coma after a car crash and it's looking unlikely that she will ever fully recover.

As the investigation comes to a head, Barnes is forced to accept that there are parallels between his own wife and the victims, causing him to question his moral beliefs. As he desperately searches for the culprit, Barnes' doubts increase; do the suggested motives of the crimes fit the killer he is chasing?

Matt Hookings leads the cast as Detective Ryan Barnes, a man whose proverbial plate is fuller than customers at an all-you-can-eat buffet. His performance is passable, but I felt he's been asked to vary his emotions far too much and instead settles for a middle ground of blank neutrality. There's the occasional outburst or scene of sorrow, but they're not quite convincing enough to impress. Still, it's a promising turn from Hookings in his first headlining production.

The standout performances here though are undoubtedly those of Ian Pirie and Hannah Waddingham. Pirie is ferocious as the troubled town drunk Mike Evans and continues his outstanding run of performances after starring in the menacing Netflix thriller Calibre. Waddingham is on the other end of the emotional scale as caring grief councillor Joanne Hill, and plays a large part in the success of the deeper themes that run through Winter Ridge.

On the surface, the film appears to be a straightforward serial killer thriller, but by the end there are some pressing questions asked and points raised about mental health, loneliness and isolation. These mainly come from Barnes' interactions with veteran performer Alan Ford (Snatch, Cockneys vs. Zombies and the definitely innocent gangster on Alan Partridge's Knowing Me, Knowing You) as ailing Dale Jacobs. It doesn't do much to answer them, and disappointingly the importance of them are largely diluted by its exaggerated conclusion, but it's respectable of screenwriter Ross Owen Williams to shed light on these topics.

Winter Ridge shines more in the moments of heartfelt drama between Barnes and his wife or the elderly residents than it does when trying to be thrilling. I found the chase scenes to be unnecessary and didn't fit with the rest of the film's tone. This is especially distracting in one scene where the two detectives pursue a suspect, alone, all guns blazing. I know it's fictional, but something about seeing British detectives holding pistols and flashlights as if they were in an episode of CSI didn't sit right with me.

I would've liked to see an attempt at more of an actual investigation in its place. Save for the standard drawing pin board of newspaper articles and a few coroner reports, the detectives jump from one lead to another, usually finding exactly what they're after. It doesn't help that the village seems to only have about four people living there, including the police officers and one of the most lenient Captains in the country who pretty much lets the duo do what they like as long as they aren't bothering him. If they do, it's a stern ticking off with no lasting repercussions. Understandable though; if the pair are fired, or at the very least suspended, there's absolutely no one in the village to replace them.

Nevertheless, a few strong performances and thought-provoking themes make Winter Ridge worth a visit, even if it's just a passing one.

Bad on every level!
frzdshafiee20 September 2018
This movie was so bad that I felt the responsibility to submit my first review. Those awards and nominations tricked me into watching this movie and I am not sure in which field they have received these honors; Stupid acting, predictable story, plot holes, lack of consultation about how a detective conducts any kind of investigation. The only non-negative thing about this film is that camera crew knew how to shoot properly, they have done an standard job. I am really not sure who would waste a bunch a people's time to make such a movie, but you shouldn't waste your time watching this, unless you want to experience first hand where these sense of wastefulness is coming from.

Forgettable
orkneyislander18 June 2019
Warning: Spoilers
It gets two stars for the scenery. The script was cliched, the acting apart from the Mick Evans character left much to be desired. The cops were dumb taking long enough to realise all victims had insulin in their blood and the lead cop who witnessed and chased the masked murderer who was obviously tall and thin immediately decided that the murderer was his suspect who was a totally different body shape! The ending on the clifftop was ludicrous and laughable. So, with the 'overacting', the script and the plot, I would not recommend it.

Don't, Just Don't...
kostasjarvis19 September 2018
Great locations, terrible unconvincing screen-play, awful casting (how can you get an old lady to unconvincingly play an old lady?), wooden acting, stolid dialogue. The "muted colour" filming just looks like it was done on the cheap - and I suspect it was.

There's really nothing good one can say about this Amateur Hour production - apart from that the studio shills "reviewing" it in various places on the internet manage to summon up slightly more credibility in their efforts to talk it up than the actors appearing in it. Don't waste any part of your life watching this, you really HAVE got better things to do...

Poor script, even poorer acting
Janet16124 June 2022
I nearly choked on my tea when I read in the Trivia here that the two actors playing the nurse and detective actually spent time with a nurse and a detective to help with their roles. Why would they do that? They were reading lines, their was no feeling of emotion or empathy from either of them. What was the point of the nurses time being wasted? The characters were just bland and unforgettable.

Anyway, as a TV drama this may have worked - with a different cast of better actors, and a different script. The scenery of Lynton and Lynmouth in North Devon is fantastic but constant shots of the stunning area does not a good film make.

It's a run of the mill police drama (not a psychological thriller). There's no edge to it, there's not even any dramatic scenes. There is some run of the mill acting, there is some bad acting (Dale the dementia suffering artist - this is THE worst performance ever), Mike the drunken thug, and the female doctor (hers is the hammiest performance ever).

Budge is low you never seen more than two people in a room (the detectives' office is a shoe box). Scenes with more than two people are either on a stairwell on in the open air.

Poor ending, actually a really bad ending - even laughable as it's so ridiculous.

If this is British film making than I am very very, sorry.

Trivia: the film was shot in 17 days. Well you could have fooled me, I thought it was one week!

Makes Miss Marple look realistic
cwarlow-981668 August 2021
Warning: Spoilers
I watched this as it had a 3.5 star review rating.

High points working out where the locations were for filming and discerning the actors origins through their accents.

Low points script. This was the most unrealistic film I have seen in years. From the village hospital with heart transplant facilities to the ICU coma unit in a single room, to the experienced CID cop who mistakes an ageing dementia patient for the person who is 4 stone lighter he unsuccessfully chases through woods, I could go on but advise you to give this a miss and take a short break to Devon which was great.

I can't believe I fell for the positive reviews. You will know what the common connection is within the first 15mins. Its that bad. A snooze fest by all means. The cinematography is bland as well. Not to mention the totally fake reactions that will never ever happen in real life.

A very well made, but simple psychological thriller
henrywhite-5804324 September 2018
I actually decided to watch this film due to the widely varying critique on it. The mere fact that it has seemly drawn in on a 'love it or hate it' response from its viewers really intreiged me. Be under no illusion, that this was most likely intended, and the part of a very intelligent plan to create a talking point, thus providing this film with this platform - this in its own right is a tremendous achievement.

Always know what it is that you are seeking before you made the agreement with yourself to watch a film - especially if you aren't a fan of surprises - this is what I would say to those who have shared a negative view.

I would say however that this film doesn't sell itself to be something that it is not. It is very good at serving the very purpose it is clear meant to. It's simple, it's thought provoking, and it is easy to watch on a Sunday afternoon, when your board of watching explosions or the perfect Hollywood romance blossom within 90 minutes of running time.

Yes this film will make you use your brain.. so if your after epic special effects and huge battle scenes this one isn't for you. However, if you enjoy reading, and using your mind to connect the dots and fill in the gaps, this is absolutely worthy of a watch.

It clearly attempts to mimic high budget US crime thrillers, which at times can be frustrating when this film clearly didn't have the same budget, but on the whole, I did enjoy it.

The acting on the whole was very good, but being lessor known actors, I think you have a job to make viewers fall for you. This is especially important when portraying a 'hero'. Perhaps it is fair to say, we needed just a little more from the lead in order to achieve this. This however I think was more a job for the writers and the director.

Other than this, I thought it was a very intelligibly executed effort to do something on a clearly low budget that many have failed to do with a much greater budget.

It's an 8/10 for me for effort, but I'd be very enthused to see what they are capable of with more resources.

I note that this film has won over 10 internationally recognised rewards from those who know far more about film making than I do - for a reason. Perhaps this film needs to appreciate from the perspective of quality film making rather than to be classically 'entertaining' which it is not, the whole way through. It is however a cinematic achievement. I would be very interested to learn what budget they actually had. I suspect in the thousands rather than the millions.

Some of the negative reviews are too harsh, and I suspect these viewers were expecting Iron man 4, rather than the reality of watching a film that is almost like watching your thoughts play out in front of you when reading a good book.

Beautiful scenery, although I found the backdrop a little mundane at times. It could have maybe benefited from some cityscape in the beginning before taking us to the secluded location where the events unfold.

Tragedy in God's Country
lavatch19 June 2022
Warning: Spoilers
The filmmakers deserve credit for their achievements in an unforgettable panorama of an idyllic community by the sea. Some of the location filming was breathtaking. In contrast to the cinematography, however, the thematic concerns of "Winter Ridge" were unfocused and bordered on a depressing film experience.

The film's director stated in an interview that "There are an estimated 50 million people suffering from Alzheimer's worldwide and we hope the film is given the platform it deserves for its subject matter to be heard. I'm hoping that this film will raise an interesting debate on the condition."

Unfortunately, the film's structure was that of a thriller about a serial killer taking the lives of elderly residents with dementia. It was not until the end that the film's "twist" revealed that the killers were engaged in what they believed were missions of mercy.

The two principal narrative of strands of the comatose state of the wife of Detective Ryan Barnes and the mysterious deaths of the elderly never had a coherent connection. A false ending to the film with the subplot of Mike Evans, who sacrifices himself to donate his heart to his daughter, also detracted from the principal topic.

The film "The Father" with a stellar performance by Anthony Hopkins offers a better focal point for a debate about the tragedy of dementia. While well-intentioned, "Winter Ridge" did not rise to the level of a film of social consciousness.
