Cannibalism,really?
ozkan-245-48526522 December 2017
Warning: Spoilers
Although I enjoy watching it , I did not like the part they ate a human being at Amir's dining table. Muslims do not eat humans. They don't even eat pork.

A Good Preparation Episode. Warning: Spoilers
-----Vikings-----

----THE PRISONER----

A GOOD PREPARATION EPISODE:

We start with a fierce Norse versus Saxons battle, with Ivar THE BONELESS and his men attacking after coming out from their hideout in the sewers (that is why at the end of our last episode, the rats were in the surface, as the light and heat of Ivar´s torches scared them)...I don´t like the strategy of Ivar very much, by making his men getting out of the sewers had the surprise factor on his side, but his first men coming out were shot and he must have lost much more before they could make an effective offensive. Nevertheless, the courage of Bishop Heahmund, on the side of the Saxons, during the fight is really worthy of admiration, same as Ivar´s leadership at that point ,as judging by the scenes, he is really good deciding the perfect moment to change strategy as the battle seems to change its course with his orders, as in the moment he ordered "SPEARS!" and seems to have been the right decision as the confrontation immediately favored the Norse ones after that.

When the shot of the camera changes we see sands of such yellowy orange colors that we even question ourselves for some seconds if we are not really watching an orange blanket or something like that as we are now again with Ironside and his men in the North Africa, where things seem to favor them at first and then slowly really complicate afterwards and a storm is coming...a sand storm!!!!!!!

One of the most interesting things in this episode is the return of Floki to Kattegat after having seen, according to him, the "Land of the Gods". Lagertha forbids him to try to make men to go with him in search of this mythical land as she, logically, doesn´t want to lose warriors in those hard times of crisis, nevertheless, he seems to be able to recruit some men. I think we can´t blame either Lagertha or Floki at this point of the story, both their positions make sense.

It seems to me as a preparation episode before more important things occur in the series, but even preparation episodes can be good, and this is exactly the case. I give it 8.5- 8.7 stars, let´s round to NINE.

Thanks for reading.

Reality
gianniskafa22 December 2017
Warning: Spoilers
Great series, watching it from the start. I undestand that it is just a show and it has to make new fans, but try to keep it as real as you can. Some things werent needed, first of all byzantine empire had real knights and not arab dressed soldiers with curved swords (talking about king eythimius soldiers on episode 4). Also its a lie and it is no needed to insult race traditions, and im talking for the gay -trance friendly scene with king haralds brother,we are seek of it in every otger tv show....keep it real... Also women didnt vote on vikings era, they respected women but they didnt have a word on the councils..

Great episode, but...
theteamavengers10 January 2021
The only thing wrong about this episode is muslims cooking and eating humans. That's not a true thing. I'm a muslim myself and i can confirm eating humans is one of the biggest sins ever.

Prisoners
claudio_carvalho24 December 2017
Warning: Spoilers
In York, Ivar and the Northmen hide in the sewage and surprise the Saxons. They defeat King Aethelwulf and make Bishop Heahmund prisoner. Meanwhile Floki returns to Kattegat and convinces many warriors to travel with him to the land of gods, a perfect place to live, despite the warning of Lagertha. Bjorn, Halfdan the Black and Sinric are welcomed by Euphemius in his camp after their long journey through the desert. But soon they find that something is wrong.

"The Prisoner" is another engaging episode of "Vikings", divided in three storylines. Floki´s segment is the weakest as usual; the Machievellian Ivar defeats the Saxons again but the cliffhanger ending with Bjorn, Halfdan the Black and Sinric makes the viewer wish to see the next episode asap to see how they will resolve their situation. My vote is nine.

I swear to god, if they just made a spin-off with the journeys of Bjørn and Halfdan I would watch it, their interactions are hillarious! This episode had battles, humor and tension, I absolutely loved it.

How old is Bjorn !?!?
vivelamontagne16 March 2018
Warning: Spoilers
The man took part in the attack on the Seine that landed Rolo a land in what is now Normandie. That was in the early 10th century. And today, we seen the same man, he's talking to some Bedouin Emir in the Mediterranean area, after mentioning the fall of Rome and the fall of Constantine, so we're talking 15th Century. There is NO statistical way the man never ever met Wonder Woman. Get real, people. I mean.. the man probably knows where that darn Grail's gone and how Black holes were formed, right ? Did anybody think of asking him ?

Absurd battle scene in England
noreplynicobite25 April 2020
Warning: Spoilers
Cannibalism aside, what struck me first about this episode is the absurdity of the first scene, the battle of York.

As the saxons enter the city, the vikings await for them in the old roman sewers. Then they engage the saxons, climbing out of the sewers slowly, 2 by 2, in the very middle of the victorious saxons.

What the hell is this scene? It's literaly impossible for the saxons to lose this battle. The openings to the sewers act as bottlenecks and they have the highground. There is no way the vikings don't get butchered one by one until none is left.

The writing of military scenes have never been great in this show, but this is just beyond stupid. 1 star for this battle alone.

This was a bad one, probably the worst episode so far
tzihlmann5 February 2018
Warning: Spoilers
*** SPOILER ALERT *** This episode was ... awful: I don't think attacking from the sewer gives an advantage. They would have been slaughtered by the Saxon army. Why give the priest another horse, if they are going to take him down again? The escape from the sandstorm was the icing on the cake. There is no way they could get out of the storm and then outrun it. The only thing that saved the episode was Floki coming back to the village. I really hope they improve on their story.

Incorrect portrayal of Arabs during Middle Ages
narada200214 November 2018
Arabs/Moslems never ate human flesh for any reason this is a disgraceful mistake in a series done by History Channel.. They had huge thriving cities and the most powerful man in the Mediterranean didn't live in Tents for sure..

Praise the gods!
darkdementress29 April 2019
Warning: Spoilers
Praise the gods Ivar can walk! Since when did someone paralyzed from the waste down suddenly learn to walk on crutches?? But only for half the episode. Why is Lagertha suddenly a crazy power hungry bisexual boring character? She was never those things the entire series. The sewer plan.. Let's crawl out one by one and hope the Saxons don't kill us all..Why is Bjorn a constantly cheating on his wife? Why does she not age? Her oldest kid looks barely younger then her and so out of place. So much stupid, awkward and bad writing in this season. For me this show died half way through season 4.

ezzsammour26 December 2017
First of all as an arab the usage of arabic language was not right at all, they were speaking with an modern Egyptian language. and since when brand new Hookahs were available in the 10th century? I think the existence of Ragnar had its affect on the show.

This series is going down with this season
kasperkyd-1678222 December 2017
Warning: Spoilers
This series keeps to fail with this season, from my best series to my worst now. This episode is even funnier, with Vikings are hiding in the sewers and starts going up to ground, the English men give them the space to get out and then fight!! What the!! Where is the Director? What is going on? You are not serious any more. I will remove this series from my Best collection. Not anymore.

Slapstick comedy
numenorsniper-6639629 March 2023
Vikings becomes progressively shaky after Ragnar dies, but S5 E5 is where occasional chuckles at the previous episodes now turns into outbursts of cry laughing at just how absolutely hopelessly god awful it's become. No direction whatsoever, just random garbage that tries to set up a rule in one scene, and immediately breaks the rule 20 seconds later, over and over again. The characters do and say the most absurd things in contrast to how we've always known them before. Lagertha is now nothing more than a pathetic plot device to cause pointless tension for no real reason. Floki has turned into a psych ward patient cult leader, and Lagertha hates him for some reason now, why?

Bjorn's Arabian Nights turns into a gay romp in the desert with those male concubines. Why are Bjorn and friends there? Why did he get rid of 90% of his fleet because Sinric told him to? Where did his fleet go after that? They just vanished without a trace.

And then there's the opening scene of the Bishop LOL Cow himself, being the most insanely over the top clown of the entire show, screaming "Heathen!!" like this show has turned into Wicker Man 2 featuring Nicholas Cage or whatever.

And the ending when the Bjorn Bros are randomly about to get beheaded, lo and behold a storm rolls in to save them! Deus Ex Machina indeed!

This episode must be studied in Comedy Schools the world over, because it's so hilariously bad.

bottomless...

I am stunned as I though this show can not be worse... quite a mistake. Things that are historically wrong, way of lives that are wrong, tactical moves that are wrong, acting that are wrong... Nothing is right in this episode.

Waait... WHAT!?
danu_bn23 December 2017
Warning: Spoilers
This is going from bad to worse. The fighting scene in the beginning was horrendous, a total nonsense, like many in this season. It is painfull to see what this show has become, breaks my heart. And the fact that Vikings are always so much superior is a big lay-off.

Incompetent writing -
GuardDawgz24 April 2022
Arabs portrayed wrongly and the fact that Ivar should've died already, this show is going down hill after Ragnors death, possibly should've tried ending this series at season 4 or given Ivar the death he deserves for killing his own brother.
