One of the things that has really hurt this season of Supergirl, and just downright confused me, is the lack of a "big-bad". At one point it could have been Lillian Luthor, then they toyed with the idea of having Lena Luthor turn evil, and now perhaps it could be Rhea, Mon-El's mother. I understand there isn't one right way to do things, but it always helps to have a through-line of storytelling.
This week provided us with yet another filler episode in terms of its villain of the week structure, but it did have some of the best character drama of the season. Alex was kidnapped by a former classmate of hers and Kara's who "knows everything about her" and has been stalking the Danvers family for a year now. If you can get passed that ridiculous nonsense, I thought the episode played out nicely.
I've said from the beginning that the strength of this show lies on the shoulders of Melissa Benoist' performance. And this year in particular, Chyler Leigh and Floriana Lima have been written incredibly well to give us a nice trio of strong female characters. That more than anything, was put to the test tonight. You can say all you want about the goofy villain, but pitting Maggie & Kara's morals up against each other was a real joy to watch. Both had their own agendas for rescuing Alex from a random warehouse. Though you pretty much knew the ending would have both of them compromising for the greater safety of Alex, it was an interesting dynamic to tackle.
Meanwhile, Rhea was seen recruiting Lena for her plan to likely put an end to Kara or some sort of terrorizing the city event. As I've made clear, I'm not a fan of bringing Lena to the dark side. It's okay if she's tempted and its "teased" a few times here and there, but making her a full-fledged villain still seems desperate to me. Of course, that could change when I see it come to pass, but that's where I stand now. Overall, this episode was an interesting one purely for the performances of the main 3 strong females. Other than that, there's not a whole lot to discuss. Hopefully the last 3 episodes will make the entire year worth it.
