Fun episode
nicd0823 February 2017
Warning: Spoilers
Honestly, overall I thoroughly enjoyed this episode. After the darker episodes of arrow and the flash of late I thought this was a welcome lighthearted relief. Granted, a Valentine's Day episode a week late was strange but I thought the tone and humour was spot on. I found mxyzptlk very entertaining. A bit over the top but entertaining none the less. I have particularly enjoyed watching Maggie and Alex's relationship evolve this season. Beautifully written and acted this week I found their scenes together both poignant and romantic. I don't agree that they are sidelined. I mean I wouldn't say no to a whole episode dedicated to them because the shipping is real you guys, but I think their relationship is playing out beautifully. Now controversially I love the Kara/ mon el dynamic. For me I see it as a kind of Ying/yang to Alex and Maggie. As much as I enjoyed season 1 I always felt like something was missing. I feel mon el brings out a different energy to the show and I really enjoy his scenes with Kara. I have read many reviews saying how quick they were to get together. Know what? Thank god. There is nothing I hate more on TV than "will they won't they" trope. It's not realistic.(not that supergirl is the height of realism) but you get my point. His character is still developing and I'm not sure he has been given the chance. Having said that I love jimmy and he has been sidelined big time this season.(literally mia whole episode??) And that's something the writers need to resolve. I don't agree that mon el is abusive. That's a ludicrous statement to make. He's immature and as Kara says far too egotistical, but he is learning. I won't write him off yet.

+loved sanvers +enjoyed Kara/mon el, excited to see where that relationship will go +anything with a Hamilton reference will win me over +Winn FINALLY found an alien who reciprocates! +funny, lighthearted episode that made me laugh out loud on several occasions

Can't Force Love
ThomasDrufke20 February 2017
I feared that a Supergirl episode centered on Mr. Mxyzptlk's attempts to win over Kara's heart would take the show back to the problems that plagued the first season. And while the episode did have redeemable qualities, it felt a little too much like a soap opera for my liking.

Much like Cupid on the past few seasons of Arrow, Mxyzptlk was used specifically for Valentine's Day and so that there could be tension between Mon-El and Kara. Out of all the relationship material, this was the most immature and unnatural. At first, I was accepting of these two as a potential couple, but the more it's explored on the show makes me less and less interested. Did we really need Mon-El to be jealous of Mxyzptlk's magic? How ridiculous is it to think Mon-El was more worried about impressing Kara than stopping the 5th dimensional magician's tricks? I won't stand for that type of nonsense.

On the other-hand, I thought the Sanvers relationship was a big highlight this week. Not as cheesy or as melodramatic as Kara and Mon, the writers have found something with these two. Alex and Maggie are great on screen together. They made what should have been another clichéd problem (Maggie hating V-day when Alex loves it), a sweet and touching arc for the two of them. The revelation that Maggie's parents are actually not accepting at all of her sexuality added plenty of depth to her, and Floriana Lima did a nice job with those scenes.

The idea of "not forcing love" on someone was a main theme of the episode, but it also felt very meta in the sense that the writers sometimes tried to force a relationship on the audience. For the most part, Mxyzptlk's presence was a nice change of pace for this season, as I can't deny the actor Peter Gadiot was pretty charming and charismatic. But I tend to hate V-day themed TV episodes to begin with, so it was an uphill battle. As a side note, Winn has an alien girlfriend now? Come on. Overall, it wasn't as bad as I thought and it had its moments. Now hopefully we can get back to the main story thread next week and get rid of these one-off episodes centered on romance.

+Sanvers

+Gadiot had some charm

-Getting tired of Kara & Mon already

-No, not Winn

relationships are hard, don't need a reminder thanks
glstrom-1426024 February 2017
So not sure why the show has devolved into a couples club. Struggling for attention and to figure out some identity the only drama is who is going to hook up with who this week. Perhaps repackaging it as a daytime soap opera would be best, and leave the crime fighting, world saving super power wielding Supergirl to find herself elsewhere.

The hottest episode ever...
charlottehenthorn15 July 2018
This episode might as well be a romance novel but in all the best ways. Between the all powerful interdemensional hotty who wont take no for anwser, and mon el finally showing some real passion for kara. This episode was steamy! Ladies if your wanted more episodes that cater to female passion this would the one for you. We all love supergirl's power hey that's why we fell in love with the show. But its nice to throw in some hotness now and then. The only downsides of the episode was mxyzptlk not being a regular character, and kara pushing a man away for the zillionth time. But hey I still loved every second so 10/10

Supergirl - S02E13 Mr. & Mrs. Mxyzptlk
j_forbesy20 February 2017
Warning: Spoilers
This was always going to be a tough episode for me, no doubt about that. Since returning from their break, I think Supergirl has been on a slide that each week is getting steeper and steeper, and the main reason for that is the relationship aspect. I say this every week but I'm okay with a relationship aspect to a show, but when that aspect becomes THE show, I never enjoy it as much.

Firstly I'll start with Kara and Mon-El. There was two things that bugged me about them this episode, the first is their relationship itself, the second is Kara herself. I am over their relationship. It started of as a nice relationship which had a really good chemistry and I really enjoyed when it was like that. Now however, it just seems like drama. While I'm happy that they finally put the pin in the will they/won't they angle they were taking, I'm not looking forward to the conflicts we are going to get now that they are together. While I do like Mon-El as a character, it's disappointing that his storyline is being contained to the love interest. In all honesty, if this continues, I'd be happy that Mon-El is written out of the show after this season, purely for the fact that I don't want him to simply be a love interest that causes drama in the show.

Now to Kara. The past couple of weeks I've had a bit of a problem with how this character has been written, and this week was no different. This week she said that Mon-El had a big ego, and although it may be true, I think the writers need to realise that just because Kara is the main character, doesn't mean she can't come off as egotistical and show unlikable qualities. Last week she took on her bosses in a way that I thought was completely inappropriate in a real world situation. This week she jumped on her "I'm Supergirl" high horse and has a go at Mon-El for trying to help. What makes it worse is that they even wrote what I was thinking through Mon-El's dialog saying that she isn't a good judge of what she can handle and that she is full of herself. I feel as though the writers are doing a good job at writing characters differently to how we expect them to be, then in the same episode, can point out that something is wrong with that character.

Moving onto Maggie and Alex, this relationship has been the only relationship that I think the whole way through the show has been solid. Unfortunately, I've started to come a bit off them in the last few weeks because there is so much drama amongst other relationships that theirs gets tainted. What I really did like about them this week though was that we got to see more into the back story of Maggie. I thought they did a really good job linking in the Valentines day event with her back story. However, I did have a problem with how they went about part of it. At this point, Maggie and Alex have been together for a while, and because of that I thought Maggie's reaction to Alex planning a Valentines day was uncalled for. Regardless of the deeper meaning, for a couple that has been together for a while and has been a strong as we have seen them be, her reaction came off as teen dramaish. While this is the CW and in the end this is mostly a teen show, I thought that writing in a reaction like that just for the purpose of causing drama between them is unnecessary.

Quickly onto the villain, I thought he was fine, not great, not good, just fine. I think he really only served as a back drop to all the relationship drama and overall, there wasn't much I'm going to remember about him by this time next week.

Before closing out, I have to touch on Winn. I don't care for this relationship. We do not need another member of this show to be in a relationship. Unless this character is going to serve a big purpose in the bigger picture of the show, this relationship has no meaning and is completely pointless to me.

Being a Valentines themed episode, there was always going to be a theme of love, but the fact that this show is coming off endless episodes of love drama, I'm over the love aspect of this show. I started off as a 7/10 when I watched this episode but after writing this and rewatching a few moments, I think I have to lower it.

Has anyone ever watched Star Trek? Warning: Spoilers
The character Mxyzptlk is an exact copy of the character "Q" from Star Trek The Next Generation, who was an alien being that could alter everything with a snap of his fingers. Even his arrogant behavior is the same. I still love this show, but sometimes there is too much "Ctrl C-Ctrl V" going on.

Getting Tired of This
valyinagyerzsi21 February 2017
Warning: Spoilers
I have to say, I have been a fan of Supergirl since episode 1. I have stuck by the show when it first struggled to find it's footing, and when it axed the romance built up all through season 1, in the first episode of season 2, seemingly without a reason (the fact that i was not a fan of that romance probably helped, but from a plot point view it was rushed and weird). I have stuck by Cat and half of season 1's cast leaving, and I honestly loved this show, but I think I am close to being done.

Mon-el has been annoying and stupid up until now, and taking up way too much screen time already, but this week he has graduated to downright abusive and toxic. Again and again, week after week they show us that he is not only selfish and spoilt, but he refuses to respect Kara and literally goes against her wishes. An you know what, if he was just a crappy character that would be fine. If he was a crappy character who also takes up a ridiculously huge amount of screen time, it would be less fine, but still probably something I could get over. But now he gets rewarded for it?? Now he is romantic because he throws a jealous fit, goes against Kara's wishes, literally tries to KILL SOMEONE, and Kara just falls into his arms?? Hell no. This relationship is incredibly toxic, and while effed up relationships are very entertaining on TV, only as long as they are portrayed as problematic and abusive, not if they are propped up and sold as the show's main couple. ESPECIALLY not on a show, that seems to pull in a lot of young viewers, who really shouldn't be taught the lesson, that 'No is a Yes, if you are just persistent enough' or that 'Lashing out to your loved ones, disrespecting them, and ignoring their wishes will be forgiven, even more rewarded if you just say 'sowwy''. and ESPECIALLY NOT on a show that makes such a huge fuss about how feminist they supposedly are.

Moreover, if Mon-el even was a good love interest, which he very much isn't, I would not okay with how Kara basically doesn't seem to have any story lines this season that aren't centered around, or at least tied to him. She is the bloody main character, and yet all of her story lines are either chasing him, mentoring him, trying to turn him into a decent person, or being romanced by him. Kara is the only female superhero lead on TV for DC, and one of the only three along with Jessica Jones, and Skye if you count Marvel too (if you really want to force it White Canary counts too but you have to squint quite hard), would it be really hard that she doesn't get pushed aside for a spoilt white space fratboy on her own show??? Especially because apart from being a love interest, or a bar tender, Mon-el doesn't really have a place in the story. We already have enough heroes as it is (and lets not forget he doesn't actually want to be a hero, he just wants to impress Kara).

And all of this, is getting pushed and forced down our throats at the expense of more Danvers sisters relationship, at the expense of getting to know more about Maggie, Lana, or M'gann, the new characters that actually are interesting and have the possibility of being special, instead of the main character of Project X - Daxam edition, or even at the expense of more sanvers development (which btw is constantly rushed at the expense of this forced mess too).

The situation btw was even worsened this episode, because they brought in Mr.Mxyzptlk to contrast Mon-el, but the only thing they managed to show us, is that they are both equally bad and creepy, but at least Mr. Keyboardsmash is a bit less bland.

The episode's only up-points were the Sanvers moments, which were very sweet, and i'd have loved to see more of, if we didn't have to endure 40 minutes of this intergalactic dick measuring contest.

Winn and his girlfriend were cute enough but the rest of the episode was so terrible, that they couldn't make up for it, even hand in hand with sanvers.

So all in all, I am nearing the end of my patience with this. If they do not rectify the Mon-el situation in an episode of two, I am done for good.

"Sanvers-centric"
thisemailisforcrap20 February 2017
Warning: Spoilers
Do I even need to say it?

How many seconds of screen time did Maggie and Alex get? Compared to the last scene with Mon-El and Kara alone? 4 minutes and 30 or so seconds, out of a 45-minute show, and that's considered Sanvers- centric?

This wouldn't be a problem if it wasn't so heavily advertised and teased for the last month. LGBTQ audiences aren't stupid, they know when they're being exploited for views.

And can anyone tell me what Kara's character arc is this season? You know, the main character of the show? What exactly has she dealt with beyond being caught up in some forced romantic drama with the worst and least interesting character of the series?

I'm tired. This show used to be good in the first season. It was about women, focused on women's lives and personalities and complexities. It was about morality and family and duty. Now it's about flashy slow- mo fight scenes and CGI, with absolutely no substance to support them. CW, we see you, and this isn't the first show you've ruined.

The single good moment in this was Maggie discussing why she didn't like Valentine's Day. That's it. Floriana gave a strong performance and it carried the scene.

The rest is just embarrassing. I'm tired of watching the same boring drivel that I see in every other show. Everything that made Supergirl unique and different is now gone.

I'm disappointed. Really, truly disappointed. Probably won't be watching this show anymore.
