Great American: Mick Rory
imakk20017 February 2017
Warning: Spoilers
+ Heatwave's opening monologue: the best one yet and so Mick.

+ The show assures us that Mick will not be getting all warm/fuzzy any time soon. And thank goodness for his trail of crumbs!

+ MiniRay! Didn't realize how long it's been since we saw him in action.

+ Love Sara and Amaya reminding the guys they had to rescue Mick, too, and the guys' response.

+ They squeezed in a Star Trek reference in dark moment and it worked.

+ Evil Rip was kinda scary...

+ But poor Ray and the space rat...

  • And then they shoehorned in a really really tropey romantic SL for Nate/Amaya. Berlantiverse is 0 for infinity when it comes to romance. And LoT isn't immune.

  • And that WTF Rip getting the spear and sticking a "loss" on Jax?!?!?

Great Amercian Mick + evil Rip - tropey, out of place romance - lame loss of spear = score: 8.5

Flawed writing, but still enjoyable
phoenixnl-166472 March 2020
Warning: Spoilers
Even though (as other reviews already stated) this episode has plot holes, inconsistencies and unbelievable things (like the door of the Waverider being pulled open with a few ropes). I still found it pretty enjoyable. The show in season two is more of a not too serious fun romp through time. So even though the whole spear of destiny arc could have been stopped dead in it's tracks at the end of the last episode (by simply destroying the piece they obtained) and the fact that it's kinda ridiculous that that spear that has been around for a mere few millennia would be able to completely change reality through claimed religious magical powers, I still enjoyed the episode because of the jokes, references and bickering.

So if you wanna enjoy this show too, just stop taking it seriously and just think of it as a parody of it's genre. (If you want a show with better and more believable time travelling, you're better of watching Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency inspired by the Douglas Adams novels, who also wrote the Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy series)

Time for heroes....
michaelafamfulikova8 February 2017
Warning: Spoilers
This current episode was tense in many aspects. I have to say i really appreciate Mick Rory at his best here, his sarcastic lines, such as" I hate Christmas". I have to frown slightly upon another attempt at romance, though I have nothing against Nate and Amaya! And Jax being facing Rip by himself would be okay, but I still cannot take why Jax would have considered killing him.I think though he would finish his job, had Sara not intervened! It seems another Legend has a fear of something, this time Ray. He has fear of rats:O. And Sara being shot by Rip, and a desperate Martin trying to help her, the scriptwriters clearly wanted to show Martin, no matter how sassy he may seem, he still has a heart. And the way he yelled "Dammit!" at Jax, it so reminded me of other VG character yelling at the other one in one blockbuster movie 20 back ago!I have gotten chills. And the final Christmas celebration was a good breathing point after all the tension. It's clear though "Marty" was willing to celebrate Christmas, though he is a Jew.

Best acting performances: Caity Lotz as Sara Lance Franz Drameh as Jefferson Jackson Victor Garber as Martin Stein Dominic Purcell as Mick Rory Arthur Darvill as Rip Hunter

Jax is a complete badass
barnesjohn-1365827 June 2020
Warning: Spoilers
This episode had some plot holes, but Jax was easily the MVP. He was a pretty good captain, on his first try. He single handedly led the team and faced Rip. He was able to turn on the power all while the power of the ship was off. The scene of Rip snapping Sara's neck was heartbreaking, but Franz killed it, as usual.

Gimme a break
Abdulxoxo5 December 2020
Warning: Spoilers
Come on, they knew it was a trap and this how they prepared, Sara assigning role to everyone? isn't that what they do under normal circumstances? and why would you send away Nate and Amaya, the two people who still got their powers, maybe so they could have a boring romance angle? Gideon can bring people back from the dead? and jack couldn't shoot Rip at the leg or something? gimme a big break!

The American Way
ThomasDrufke10 February 2017
After a widely praised Legion of Doom centric episode, the team took on a rogue version of Rip Hunter after he was apparently taken captive by Thawne last week. Yeah, not the best way to follow up a great episode.

Following along the typical Legends style episode, 'Turncoat' took the team back to 1776 as they were forced to save George Washington from the likes of Rip Hunter and restore the America we know today. A couple of things worked and a couple of things didn't. For one, why completely throw away Rip's strange 1960's alter ego from the last few weeks? It was working, and a much more relatable way to welcome him back into the fold after he wasn't so well received in season 1. Perhaps a villain turn is what the character needs, but we all know it's not going to last long. There's no way that he doesn't rejoin the team by season's end.

The current captain, Sara, took a hit this week as she was on life support and was basically dead for a good chunk of the episode. Every member of the team, in fact, took a huge blow this week. No power on the ship meant no Gideon, Jax & Stein couldn't Firestorm up (shocker), Ray was stuck in his shrunken suit, Rory was captured, and Nate had performance issues (though not in bed). If you think about it, Rip did way more damage to the team by himself than the entire Legion did last week. Weird how that works.

But speaking of Nate and….Amaya? I could have sworn Ray and her had a thing a few episodes ago, but it's no surprise that a CW is trying out multiple lanes for their characters' relationships to go. I'm not opposed to the idea of Nate & Amaya, but the uncomfortable way in which they got together was poorly executed. I've liked the two on the show so far, but the dialogue just came off as a really awkward and childish.

The one thing that really did work though was how well the team is starting to build a bond and trust together. The chemistry is way more believable than it was when Rip randomly picked them off the street last year. Aside from the strangely timed Christmas theme, it was more of the same for this episode. Hopefully the Rip situation is figured out sooner or later. Let's see a little bit more of the Legion, right?

+The team works well in high stress situations

-Awkward romance

-Evil Rip

Totle should be: how badly written drivel tries to move plot along in an artificial way
ioanaalexandramircea19 January 2019
Warning: Spoilers
Ok, Christmas spirit, trying to be good, the "American Way" of doing things... This episode is a soup of the most righteous and non-sensical type EVER. I won;t bore you with details, just one thing: WHY didn;t they shoot Hunter in the foot and retrieve the spear?? It's not like every time you shoot someone you must kill them. I mean..it's JUST the fate of reality in balance, why recover the spear?? Right? It's more important to gee the Christmas spirit and "save" Jax's sole than the whole of humanity, by NOT KILLING Hunter, just wounding him and getting the spear. Look, people, I for one have had ENOUGH of stupid plot devices that mode the story forward in an artificial way, of rigtheous drivel that no one in their right mind would ever say or do. It;s like the writers are all idealistic teenagers that hope to change the world by saying the right magic formula. It's INSULTING. What is the point of all this? Educating people to be better? People are smarter than these stupid shows give them credit for and actually know right from wrong. And letting someone go away with the most powerful artifact, capable of destroying and remaking everything, instead of shooting them in the foot and fixing them with Gideon, a ship that can apparently even bring people back form the DEAD it's just plain and simple STUPID!

Extremely unrealistic
ilthaniel-118 February 2017
Warning: Spoilers
---Contains spoilers---

I don't know about others, but when I see the hatch of the time ship being pulled open by a few men with ropes - a hatch that must be able to keep the atmosphere in the ship - I'm having trouble with something like that. Add to that the ease with which 18th century soldiers accept M-16's, or letting evil Rip go with the piece of the spear because apparently if you use a gun you can only kill with it and not wound, then this episode starts to suck royally for me. And since I forgot several other things in my frustration while watching this episode I can't even tell you everything that was wrong with it. Do scriptwriters and producers think that because it's a series about Superheroes you can fill an episode with unrealistic nonsense, or didn't they even realize they were doing so? I'm not certain which answer I'd find worse.

typical nonsense Warning: Spoilers
So the mission of the team is supposedly to protect time. And if the legion of doom gets all the pieces of the spear of destiny they can change time. So it stands to reason that the team must do everything in their power to keep the legion from getting all the pieces, right? Wrong! It didn't take Rip all that long to get a piece of the spear from Jackson. And of course when Jackson has a chance to kill Rip and get the piece of wood back, he doesn't.

And how about Nate and Amaya. The goal of the team returning to 1776 is keep Washington from being killed. So what do Nate and Amaya do? Why, they take the night off to have sex! Well done you two, you obviously know what your priorities are.
