Supergirl - S02E06 Changing
j_forbesy16 November 2016
Warning: Spoilers
This season of Supergirl has been fantastic to me and I think the move to the CW has done it a world of good. While I really enjoyed season 1, the show seems to be hitting a different level to what it didn't last season. For me a sign of a show going good is when they can have a slow episode and make it feel like it was needed. This was one of those episodes for me. Apart from the large amount of action in the back end of the episode, most of it surrounded the theme of having to change and face currently problems. I really thought this was a episode we needed because over the opening episodes we have seen several problems unveal themselves and this episode really faced them head on.

I'll start with Alex and Maggie. From the get go, you knew these two were going to have some sort of romance going forward and as the season has gone on, we've seen it become strong and strong until we hit the point last week of, is this what Alex wants. As I've said in previous weeks, I really like Alex as a character and I'm really liking what they are doing with her this season. Though this arc we are getting an emotional side to Alex that we didn't really get to see much of back in season one. I thought the scene with Alex and Kara in Alex's apartment where Alex has faced her problems and overcome them just to be knocked down is one of my favourite Alex scenes we have gotten in either season. I don't remember seeing as much raw emotion from her as a character than we did in that scene.

Something I also think they are handling really well this season is Mon-El and Kara's drive to train him. Kara's drive starts from her failing to take Superman under her wing when she was younger and because of that I feel like we are getting a form of brother/sister sibling relationship. Last episode we saw Kara face the facts that Mon- El isn't cut for the same type of work that her and Clark are, but she still believes that he has what it takes to be a hero. I really loved the scene in the ally were both Kara and Mon-El basically speak whatever they are thinking and they are both faced with the truths of what the other thinks. I thought this was a big moment for me because we never got to see Kara's adjustment to living on Earth and through Mon-El, we are seeing a much older alien having to face with the struggles of jumping right into human life. Following on from that, seeing Mon-El step up and go into action was great. While he wasn't the most effective fighter, I feel like it really kick started his heroic side because he got to see what it was like to be in Kara's shoes.

When it was revealed that James would be becoming a superhero of some sort, I was a little worried that we were going to get superhero overload. With Mon-El and Miss Martian already being introduced, the thought of a non alien superhero in a world where aliens are the main focus made me worried that he wasn't going to have the impact that the others do. I was wrong. Before jumping into Guardian himself, I want to talk about the build up to him from Winn and James. These two have always had a dynamic that I've liked and to see them both going at each other over the suit was fantastic to watch. I think we always saw that drive behind James in whatever he has done, but this was a big scene for Winn. Apart from being caught up in the love triangle with Kara, Winn for the most part has always been that smart tech guy but to see him embrace that side of his character and lay down the law that he is responsible for what happens to James really showed us a side of Winn we haven't seen to much of.

On Guardian himself, I thought the suit looked fantastic. I'm sure they will constantly be doing some tweaking to its appearance, similar to Diggle and his helmet, for it's first appearance it was great. I really like the Kylo Ren style voice muffle. The idea that James want to stay anonymous to Kara and everyone else is a great sign to me because in past CW superhero shows, anytime someone becomes a hero, everyone in the circle knows about it. Also from that, it sets up a really good arc that will take place once the others do discover it is James.

The final thing I took out of this episode was between Martian Manhunter and Miss Martian. I've recently been binging through Young Justice so the parallels between both versions of Miss Martian are fresh in my mind. I liked how they took the white martian approach with her and I like how it's a factor that came into play so early after it's reveal. The relationship we get between Martian Manhunter and Miss Martian is so much stronger in this show in comparison to Young Justice because the world of superheroes is so much smaller to them, which means that we know when the truth comes out, it is going to devastate Martian Manhunter and she knows that.

Overall, while being a slower episode, it was still another great episode of Supergirl. I felt it really addressed some issues that have arisen in the first part of the season, while still setting up future story arcs that I can't wait to see how they will handle them.

The Guardian Debuts
Raytus11 April 2018
This episode debuted the Guardian, a character from the 40's created by Joe Simon and Jack Kirby in Star Spangled Comics. It was nice to see the nod to the comic on the truck sending intel to the Guardian.

Once again Supergirl ventures mildly into politics adding some global warming into the story line, where of course the anti global warming character is the sinister cretin. Fortunately, it's just a back drop to introduce the Parasite. He was really well handled until they turned him into a CGI monster. The CGI monster thing is overused in these shows. Sometimes it's okay, more often hokey. I prefer it when they stick closer to the comic book incarnations of the characters.

The coming out part of the episode was handled very well, in fact the whole development of the relationship has been well paced and kept my interest this season. I suspected Alex was going to get denied, in fact I could swear this has happened on other shows. But it was still really well done and credible. It's great how obtuse Kara can be, she's super powerful but still a goofy kid so often.

Having grown up on the Christopher Reeves "You'll believe a man can fly very gently" incarnation of the character, the decision to make Supergirl the most action pack busting-up-the-joint of the CW shows was a wise decision. The Super Family is nothing but a bore when played as all powerful.

Changing
Abdulxoxo5 December 2020
Warning: Spoilers
At first, i wasn't fond of James, all of sudden, wanting to be a Vigilante or something, 'cause it's a similar trope in other arrowverse series where a Joe average character wants to be a superhero or fighting bad guys, and saying "tHiS iS wHo I wAnT tO bE fRoM bEgInNiNg", even tho it's not part of their specialty. But I think this change might work for James, 'cause he seemed pretty bland lately and doesn't have much to do. Now with this, he'll have something to do. The suit tho, looked very similar to John Diggle's Spartan in Arrow.

Alex, Acting on Maggie's advice come out to Kara, at first Kara acted a little bit confused which piss off Alex but later on she explained herself, saying she felt guilty 'cause she didn't create an open environment where Alex could express herself. and they finally hugged it out. it's a storyline that has been going for a while, it's good to see it finally heading somewhere.

The villain of the week, is a disappointing 'alien parasite' monster, who for some reason is obsessed with global warming. He sucks the energy of any living thing that comes in contact with him including one of the most powerful - Kara. Seriously why didn't she lasered him in half from a far? does she have to even come closer inorder to defeat him?

I'm liking Mon El storyline as well, as we see some character development in this episode, I'm sensing a future team-up between him, Kara, and Guardian. I think it's going to be cool.

All in all, this episode, like the title suggest, serve as a turning point for some of the characters. The performances are good, the score is fantastic; it complements the scenes well especially emotional ones.

Coming Out to the World
ThomasDrufke14 November 2016
Changing is a pretty cheesy title for any CW show but it makes sense for this episode. Everyone was going through some sort of shift tonight, and unfortunately some worked better than others.

I honestly don't even want to get into the villain of the week as it was yet another example of this show failing to present anything compelling in that department. The only saving grace was that the fact that it transformed into something pretty seismic, so it gave the so- called 'Super Friends' something to fight. But I don't understand why they haven't made better use of Cadmus as the overarching big-bad this season. Sure, we got a tease at the end with Mon-El being kidnapped, but come on, we're 6 episodes in now. You would think there would have been some more movement in that department.

But let's talk about the real controversy from tonight, the debut of 'The Guardian' in a full-fledged suit. I hated the suit when I saw the images released a few weeks back, and I'm still not totally on board with any aspect of James Olsen as a vigilante. But if I'm being honest, I didn't hate the team-up fight with him, Kara, and Mon-El. But that's not really saying all that much. And don't even get me started on how poorly written those scenes were between him and Winn.

Another big change came from Alex this week as she finally came out to Kara. I really like this storyline as it not only gives Alex some heavy material this season, but it's not something typically tackled in a superhero show. I give the showrunners props for that. But I just can't get over the brutally cheesy writing between Alex and Kara tonight. Perhaps some will find it endearing, and it was to a certain extent, but I feel like it was something out of a hallmark movie and not something written for intelligent viewers.

A few other tidbits were noting; it sure seems like Martian Manhunter won't be taking Miss Martian's blood all that well, which just seems like a boring deviation. And Mon-El, aside from getting kidnapped, is growing into his own as his own person. I've liked his and Kara's extracurricular activities thus far, although I figured Supergirl couldn't get drunk, so I think his future on this show is bright.

+Appreciating the effort towards Alex's arc

+The team up fight was cool

-Weak writing all around

-Another horrendous villain

Jimmy Olsen is the Guardian??? FOR PETE'S SAKE.
co-gorman30 June 2018
Warning: Spoilers
This is what I mean when I say the people making this show are lazy. JIMMY OLSEN IS NOT THE GUARDIAN!!! You want to have Jimmy become a vigilante, fine. But stop being so lazy, and make up a name for him. Don't just take another established character and give him a different identity. My god, how lazy are you people?
