Thankfully NOT a goofy comedy but an OK throwback slasher
FilmFatale29 May 2021
Five girlfriends go camping in a national park to celebrate one's birthday. Unfortunately for them, there's a huge weed crop that someone is desperate to keep trespassers away from, and much bloodshed ensues.

I avoided this one for a long time because the title made me fear it was another stoner comedy masquerading as a horror homage but I'm happy to admit I was wrong. The biggest problem I had with 4/20 Massacre is that there are loooonnnng stretches of characters talking and then walking and then sitting and talking but things pick up by the third act. I was happy to see that the gore was plentiful and the kills were on camera; some of them were really mean-spirited which is always a plus. Is it great? No. But it's much better than many of the throwback slashers I've seen in recent years and I don't regret devoting 85 minutes to it.

It was fine

The acting was better than I had anticipated and I actually liked the music. It was just kinda boring overall. If you're gonna have an entire movie out in the wilderness at least make it aesthetically pleasing. It was mainly just a bunch of dirt and some trees. Bleak.

Intriguing!

What this film lacks in aesthetic it makes up for with weak acting. It really is amateur hour. But if you ever wanted to see a fresh from Burning Mam Swamp Thing pull a Jason on the cast of Ginger Snaps Back, this is your film.

Could have been a halfway decent movie...
nyjazzman24 June 2019
The acting wasn't bad for the most part. The story and dialogue had a few interesting moments. I'll leave out how this movie develops and then turns out, to avoid spoilers, but I thought the last 40 minutes or so just plain sucked. Looked like the writers just phoned in the ending. The actors deserved a better script.

Amateur hour.

How old is the director of this movie, 15? It really feels like a high school film class decided to make a horror movie. Very amateurish. Just dreadful.

Reasonably Fun Amateur Effort
TwistedContent24 January 2021
This one has been waiting in the watchlist since before it came out, for obvious reasons, and is to be watched under obvious circumstances. And, you know, it really wasn't all that bad this time around. Grantedly, it's cheap, deeply flawed, silly and not exactly very memorable, but as far as fun goes.. You can have some with "4/20 Massacre".

The plot: A group of five women go camping in the woods to celebrate a friend's birthday over 4/20 weekend. But when they cross the turf of an illegal marijuana grow operation they must struggle to survive the living nightmare.

All female characters for the group of main protagonists was an unexpected choice, but a welcome one - how many stoner flicks do You know where the main character aren't guys? The choice proved successful through decent acting and quite unexpected, by a lot of people possibly despised, melodrama. The 'boring' parts. The overall plot is extremely short and thin, and doesn't go beyond synopsis. Sure, there are couple minor twists, all of which will strongly remind of many slashers made before over decades. Where there isn't killing, there is a lot of filler, melodrama, including romance, between the characters, lots of 420 jokes and endorsement, and the thing is, it works, the filler makes the pacing consistent enough, and the acting helps to enjoy it. The five friends are all different enough, from a devoted-to-rastaman stoner to the restrained birthday girl, or the scream queen of "4/20 Massacre". The killer, the weed man, is hilarious, skipping around real sneaky like in backgrounds, hitting and brain bongs and such, fun guy, not a lot of character though.

"4/20" can be visually confusing, style-wise. It takes place entirely during bright daylight, and that's understandable, but the post-production saw that the blues are well jacked up. All black tones were way too blue, and contrast was overused at times. It's shot well enough for a micro budget feature, but the editing is flawed.

It is an amateur hour movie.. But an effortful one, filled with enough stuff to keep the stoned one engaged. You'll know whether to watch it. My rating: 4/10.

One of the dumbest movies ever
draftdubya6 October 2018
The minute the girls(mid 30s women) talk to the sheriff, you just know this will be a shiatfest. The sheriff asks the girls for ONE beer, and one of the girls roll her eyes so hard she almost went cock eyed. Then he tells them to avoid the illegal grow ops, because these people are gangster and will kill you, but one stoner chick really thinks it's awesome that somehow she'll get some free weed. I'm not saying anything else, but if you can get pass that garbage, then you're one strong person.

If you can get pass the horrid acting in 2 minutes you're also a strong person.

Recommend to get stoned first
randyunseen25 November 2019
Warning: Spoilers
I love horror movies... I usually go easy on critiquing them. But this movie doesn't work at all. I like the hunter better than the girls. The 5 girls with all the Yapping and carrying on. I can't relate or care about them if they get killed. The writing was boring...

The filming location in Big Bear CA is not scary. Daytime not scary. Example... Blair Witch was a creepy forest. This place is not creepy. If a Ranger can drive up to the girls in a truck. Then there not far away from help. Plus a horror without sex or nudity is breaking the rules of horror... Kids that have sex die. Again... All Day shots are not scary. Most of the scenes were shot with to much sun. Again not scary. If you're gonna go camping it should have night scenes that get scary...

Lighting might have been a problem, or no budget for lighting period. The Cookie Monster Suit wasn't scary either. Should have spent more time on the script and story.

Sorry... I hate being hard on horror movies. But this movie was horrible and had no point or journey.

The title had me hooked.
jamesmarango31 October 2018
Warning: Spoilers
I enjoy a good massacre as well as a good 4/20. This was a misleading title for most. This was a stereotypical stoner movie in the sense that smokers are portrayed as hippies. The five main characters are girls which is interesting, I have never seen a movie like that. This film is very gruesome which doesn't really add much to the movie. It's an average slasher movie that will have you on edge, but nothing comes out of it. It is predictable that the Sheriff is part of the weed plot. Overall though, I would never recommend this movie to any of my friends or family.

Quite the bore
Leofwine_draca29 January 2019
Warning: Spoilers
4/20 MASSACRE is yet another indie horror flick about a camping trip gone awry. This time an all-female group head out into the wilderness for some hiking fun, only to encounter an illicit marijuana plantation which is protected by a psycho killer. Extremely cheesy editing, lots of long-winded conversations between dullish characters and little incident makes it quite the bore to sit through.

Campy, Stoner Slasher Fun
joebucknam_actor14 June 2018
This was a very original movie experience, to say the least. I went into thinking it would be another run of the mill stoner movie and was surprised with a unique story that mixed the campiness of stoner movies with heart-racing horror/thriller. Jamie Bernadette, the new Indie Queen of Horror, leads this cast and puts in her usual mixture of physical acting and witty dialog. Must see!

It's not the worst movie ever but its not good either
pieterjanspiessens12 September 2018
I reeeeaaally hated the sound track, i normally don't pay THAT much attention to the music in a movie unless its really nice music but in this case the music was just awful in the movie to a point it was so bad it ruined the movie. The way they portrayed stoners was absolutely stupid, stereotypical and sooo wrong in so many ways but i guess thats the case with a lot of 'weed-themed' movies (i'm not a stoner myself but i can imagine it's offensive to people who enjoy weed)

On the other hand it was a classic slasher with not to much story and some cool kills, nothing special but still pretty okay and entertaining

Its still worth watching if u have seen everything already and wanna watch an average slasher you havent seen yet but its just really a shame they kinda ruined an okay movie with a horrible soundtrack.

There's bad. Then, there's this.
jimi515029 November 2018
Warning: Spoilers
I'm all in for horror of any kind. This sounded like a typical go-camping-and-get-killed sort of slasher movie ... there's a bunch of them out there. 4/20 is weird in that the acting isn't bad, it's shot and edited pretty well, the gore is fair, but it's boring!! Well, and rather dumb. Two biggest issues: one, 5 women. Unless there was a skinny dip scene (there wasn't) no sex. I'm sorry. A good B movie, slasher film needs nudity and sex. During the times between killings, the women just yap about dumb stuff. Sex and nudity would have filled the gaps better. Two, the soundtrack. Omg. There may as well been cartoon bongos for the running sound effect. Really dumb. Plot? 5 women go camping and encroach on a weed farm. The purveyors kill anyone who gets close. Okay. It wouldn't have been an issue, in my mind, had the ranger not told the women about it when they arrived! Stupid. No shock that the ranger was in on things. As always, there's a lone survivor who can't seem to be killed as easily as the others. The issue here is that she's no Sarah Connor, if you know what I mean. I give the movie 5 stars as the acting wasn't bad, there's gore, and the plot isn't senseless. It gets minus stars for no nudity, really bad music, and a heroine that can't even run like her life depends on it.

Worth a Watch if you have nothing else to do
young-erika652 April 2020
It wasn't the worst movie ever. But it came close. If you have nothing else to do. Give this movie a watch. Actually just what you would expect in a cheap slasher movie. More like the 70s era type movie. Seen this movie on Showtime. Free month trial. Reasons why I only pay for HBO , Cinemax, Starz, Hulu and Netflix.

Weak, as expected
grantss18 June 2022
A movie that looks like a Z-grade horror and is. Weak, mindless plot, poor production values, acting that barely passes for acting.

At least I can't say I was disappointed.

Pretty but far from perfect!
jonmonroe-9084820 May 2023
This movie is hard to judge because I liked some things about it. The premise is a pretty good idea but most the execution is flawed! There are so many cringe moments/performances, like the odd from the beginning ranger, the girl that is way too into weed to be an adult and the cliche white hunter dude but the biggest fault in it are the cringe lines by almost all the characters, one of which I had to rewind to make sure I heard correctly (you will almost certainly know the part). I don't want to be all negative cause I did enjoy and finish the movie somehow but that was a lot to do with only a couple pretty good performances and the overall attractiveness level of the cast (but even that was marred by the horrible 'surprised look' of the lead actress.

The Bistro Huddy Guy!!!!
tgcme22 March 2022
All you need to know is that the guy from the Bistro Huddy shorts on Youtube is in the opening scene and meets with a very foreseeable end! Dang! If he'd been the star of this movie, I'd have given it a 10 for sure! That was a fun little surprise! I don't even care what the rest of the movie is like.

Solid and enjoyable slasher
kannibalcorpsegrinder5 October 2018
Heading out into the forest, a group of friends looking for a secluded spot to camp out for a special celebration end up encountering a psychotic killer protecting a secret weed-patch rumored to grow in the area and forces them to come up with their own tactics to get away alive.

This one wasn't all that bad of a slasher. One of the better aspects to this one is the rather strong and engaging starting point to be had here where this one provides a rather intriguing slasher setup. The idea of a forest-bound hiking trip to celebrate a birthday and then stumbling upon the killer running wild in the area protecting his secret stash thinking they're going to intrude on his collection gives off a rather enjoyable setup to get this one going for the main series of slashing featured here. The actual payoff of those setups is the rather fun and brutal slasher scenes that are featured throughout here. The opening ambush on the hikers in the middle of the drug-stash offers up a fine starting point to the later scenes where the killer's penchant for surprise attacks leads into a series of fun creepy sequences. Launching out of the darkness of the forest to slice open the one victim's stomach, the sneak attack on the farmer out hunting in the middle of the woods and the first surprise appearance at their camp are some rather fun sequences, and with the final half getting the killer onboard more often here with some far more intensive chasing scenes and actual stalking there's plenty to like here. Getting far more brutal than expected with its kills and having a lot of fun with its main cast who are a lot of fun to be around even without the killing featured for a lot of the film, these here hold it up over it's one true problematic area. The one main issue to be had here is the film's rather struggling pacing that comes about here. With so much of the running time devoted to their romantic trips and pondering about the future of their relationships with each other, regardless of how much fun that is all holding up the slashing antics to those bare-minimum ambushes since that's all the time the film has for those sequences. The film's few sequences are spread so far apart that it really doesn't provide those kinds of relentless sequences with the few scattered moments here keeping him in that mindset just when he's about forgotten for those minor sections of the running time. However, it's really the main thing holding it back although it is somewhat detrimental.

Rated Unrated/R: Graphic Violence, Graphic Language and copious drug use.

Some funny moments! Better than expected
korythacher1 August 2022
Bottom line: This was alright, and we had a good time watching it around 420 with low expectations. Campy and cheesy as expected, but I don't think it's worth the watch unless you're after the theme.

I didn't expect this to be good, and it wasn't, but it was alright for what I wanted: a 420 themed horror movie.

The stoner characters felt like they were written by people who don't smoke weed. For the most part I think those characters and those jokes were not very funny, which was a let down.

However, I think just about every single murder was pretty funny and very enjoyable. They were all pretty gory and *creative*, which made them a blast to watch. They used some hokey sound effect that would normally feel "overdone", but did contribute to the charm and the humor of the whole thing.

Even though I rated it a 4, I had a good time, and you might have one too; it just is not a "good movie"

Actually 4/10
kosmasp23 August 2022
No pun intended and I really was not thinking about going that route and joke. But it really is there and ripe for the taking. Which kind of is another pun/wordplay considering what the movie is about. No power to drugs ... or those who want to punish you for taking them? I don't think there is really a message in here.

Quite amateurish things at play here. You'll either be down for that or you won't. Just be aware what the movie is trying to achieve. Acting might also be AWOL - but you did not expect too much from it I would hope ...

Grab a bong, snacks, and enjoy 420 Massacre
kmakenas13 June 2018
Warning: Spoilers
I had a lot of fun watching 420. The film opens with a couple stoners in search of hidden weed fields to steal the product for themselves. After attacked by a killer/creature one of the stoners is killed and the film's tone is set that those protecting the fields will brutally take out anyone near their crops. In reality, guerilla growers are in a number of states including the mountains of California and it's not uncommon to hear about killings by growers protecting their crops, so is 4/20 Massacre farfetched, not necessarily. We then meet the five girls as they are heading out on a camping trip for some fun, bonding, and potentially elevating relationships to the next level, or hearts may be broken. Each girl is unique and the audience gets to know them very well, including Rachel's (Justine Wachsberger) passion and knowledge of marijuana. They're all fun and laid back which makes them likeable and enjoyable to watch. As they hike to the campsite they run into Ranger Rick (Jim Storm) who is funny, creepy, and you have to appreciate how he makes the girls give him a beer before he delivers his warning and "or else," speech. Now that the girls know to avoid any field, they go on their not so merry way to the campsite getting lost and the hike taking forever raises the tension amongst some of them. The surviving reefer robber from the opening scene crosses paths with the girls. He's so freaked out and traumatized that he gives all the weed he stole to the girls and disappears into the forest. They're not done with run-ins as they bump into a hunter that refuses to stop shooting and an argument escalates. Once he's given some of the stolen weed, and told by Rachel to "puff puff and not bang bang," everyone is happy again. When the girls finally reach the campsite it's set up camp and have fun. They party hard, but Jess (Jamie Bernadette) is a bit more responsible and knows when to quit. Now heavily baked, they want to check out some old spots they remember when camping there as kids and they head into different directions, except for Rachel who's enjoying her alone time with her bong. The girls are paired up and this is when we learn more about them and some intentions. As we learn more about each girl, the killer has now found their camp and starts attacking. The girls and a couple others are taken out one by one. There's a twist at the climax which explains quite of bit and in retrospect sounds very logical for the killers actions, but regardless it's still wrong to go around beheading people. 4/20 Massacre is a must see as it has a classic late 70's early 80's horror vibe and that's not only because of the portable radio and cassette player the girls bring with them camping. The film has a lot of funny one liners, some classic ones that I thought I only still used like, let's blow this popsicle stand. There's quality kills and even though it's grotesque, you just have to laugh at the victim trying to put things back together, so to speak. All the actors do an excellent job and Jamie Bernadette once again is a pleasure to watch and provides some kick ass fight scenes. Lastly, good ole Rachel will share some 4/20 facts and history behind why 4/20 is a marijuana holiday. Including the tradition of once the time is 4:20 on 4/20 you must pass the bong and everyone get as many hits as possible in one minute.

The first stoner slasher flick
shagee79774 May 2018
I had the pleasure to view what is being called the First Stoner slasher flick. 4/20 Massacre was a breath of fresh air. What a delight to watch a horror movie that you think will be a silly sloppy low budget disappointment turns out to be one of the best slasher flicks of 2018. The attractive and talented cast are all names to look for and wil be seen again. Scream queen and my favorite Jamie Bernadette is the level headed birthday girl. This looks like practice for her now starring role in South Africa shooting the Furnace. Her co-stars all wonderful ,Stacey Danger, Jim Storm, Vanessa Rose Parker, Justine Wachsberger, James Gregory (excellently portrayed the Shape), Marissa Pistone, Mark Schroeder everybody's buddy, Drew Talbert and Jim Round. The movie takes place on the new national holiday Pot day which is 4/20. I came in rolling my eyes saying how serious or good can this be. Wow was I surprised. Yeah its a familiar presence, 5 hot girls go camping to celebrate there friends birthday! There is pot smoking (of course) but really interesting conversation between these lovely ladies. You have a great set up to start the movie and introduce you to the premise. It starts off to a good start and plunges you rite into the twisted scenarios that follows and leads to the girls in peril. OK you think Marijuana farm , drug dealers, girl stumble, drug dealers chase them....Nooooo! It is so much more and so much more developed. Writer Director Dylan Reynolds does a tremendous job creating a horror flick that people will really enjoy. The woodsman in the movie is a great addition to the hopefully franchise possibility of a new villain. Besides the girls there a few other characters that interact and cross there paths not only as victims put pivotal roles that all are very important in the telling of this tale. The soundtrack from Angela Winter Defoe is really fun and quirky and brings life to the scenes. So important to have a good soundtrack. Dylan Reynolds not only knows how to shoot a movie he can write. His camera is the yes and follows the action. You forget your watching a movie and become part of the movie The dialogue is well written and has you actually listening to the girls interact and feel for the characters. There is a scene between 2 of the girls and one of them expressing her love for her. It is so tastefully done and well acted out when she is rejected you real feel emotionally upset. Usually these movies have terrible acting and actors that are just there to get paid. These girls took this script and really ht a home run with the presentations of it. This has blood, suspense and 5 girls in peril. What more can you ask for. You will enjoy this and have a great time. Highly recommended. Be sure to Pre-order the movie is coming out April 3, 2018.
