Ultimately Disappointing, Still Somewhat Effective
seriouscritic-4256915 June 2019
Immediately after watching this Icelandic mystery I am somewhat on the fence about it, but I fear my enthusiasms for it will be overshadowed in the coming days by it's many weaknesses. Typical of what's at issue; there are many strong directorial touches - effective visual compositions and involving scenes that leave you feeling like a peeping tom as the film makes us a mute witness into the troubled lives of the damaged souls who are the possible suspects, and the troubled life of the lead investigator, and the troubled life of the victims' mother. In lesser hands these might be nothing more than time-wasting scenes of needless red-herrings but the film seems to be making the case that everyone is damaged by something, and everyone can just as easily be a victim as a villain. But to praise the direction you have to ignore a scene rather pointlessly, and obviously, copying a similar scene from Fincher's Zodiac, except here it makes no sense. In Zodiac the frightened character was a cartoonist completely out of his depth, but here it's the lead investigator supposedly within their depth. In Zodiac the crimes showed that anyone could become a victim, but here it's only been two little girls murdered and they are investigating sexual offenders, not murderers anyway (which also makes no sense since neither child was molested, although seemingly everyone else in the movie has been at one time). There is also a clunky "return to the scene of the crime" sequence where the detective is attacked but it is so abrupt, while at the same time not being shocking in the least, that one wonders is it a directorial intention to keep us uninvolved or is it that they don't know how to stage such a scene? And the fact that it is never again addressed in the context of the film makes it feel like it was simply added after the fact. Considering the number of other plot holes that appear, it's probably guilty of simply being another one of those.

The performances are uniformly excellent from the actors, but key characters are poorly defined or given behavior that contradicts how we are expected to view them. The lead detective is supposed to be the typical "best they have" while at the same time she is completely, and almost criminally, ineffectual throughout. In fact ALL of the police are depicted as incompetent. And yet, that doesn't seem to be an intentional theme. Similarly the mother is shown to us as devastated by what has happened to her little girls and then, in private, she exhibits suspicious behavior that is never addressed or explained even though it serves to complicate the possible apprehension of her children's killer.

Sadly, even as I am writing this review I am noticing how quickly the better aspects of the film are fading and the problems with story and development are quickly overshadowing any other appreciation. A recommendation would then be hinged upon how much such issues bother the potential viewer.

This movie wasn't bad, per se, but it is painfully slow moving. If had moved even a tiny bit slower, it'd b travelling backwards. Also kinda redundant. There were too many pointless, insignificant, nonsensical & awkward scenes making it hard 2 follow@ times.

This was a agony. Not sure were to start. I guess that it all starts with the director. He gets 0 stars. The 1 stars goes to the actors undergoing this ordeal.

The acting is as good as the director allows it to be I guess. So it sucks. The actors try to do there best but there is not to much to work with. They become flat and awkward.

The story starts OK, but has a smell of a copy cat of a American TV show. Then it becomes a cliché.

The storyline is full of holes and doesn't hold.

This is a plot with a good possibility with a bad execution.

A Stylish, Well Executed Icelandic Murder Mystery
sddavis6321 August 2018
Warning: Spoilers
The story is eye-catching right from the start. A man walking his dog in the woods outside Reykjavik, Iceland stumbles upon the bodies of two young girls. One has been strangled and the other beaten. Then, pretty quickly, we cut to the heart-wrenching scene where the mother is brought in to identify the bodies of her daughters. Those were sad and powerful scenes. From that point on, the story becomes a fairly standard murder mystery. Who killed the girls? There are a number of possibilities introduced as the local police start checking out known sexual predators (in spite of the fact that neither girl had been sexually assaulted.)

Most of the rest of the movie follows the police investigation, led by Det. Edda. The movie is not really kind to the police on a number of fronts. First, it appears that the police decide who the killer is and then set out to "prove" it and force a confession out of him rather than seriously investigating other possibilities - probably in response to public pressure to find the killers. I also thought it was strange that Edda was assigned to the case and remained on the case even after it became clear that her brother was one of the suspects. Now, I'll concede that the murder rate in Iceland is probably fairly low and so there may not be many detectives with experience with murder investigations - but that still seemed strange, especially after we were let in on the fact that Edda had been essentially harassing a man she had charged with murder years before because she couldn't accept that he had been found not guilty twice! That bothered me a bit. I thought that the story went perhaps a bit too far in trying to keep us guessing - even some of the mother's actions made her seem suspicious. And the ending was unsatisfying to me. I won't give it away, but what happened just left a very bad taste in my mouth. The performances of those playing the police officers were also at times a bit wooden.

There are some very beautiful shots of the skyline of Reykjavik and the surrounding country - which helped lighten the overall very dark mood of the movie and actually has given me something of a desire to visit the city some day. The movie is in Icelandic so I watched it with English subtitles and there were a few times when I found what was happening on the screen interesting enough that I forgot to follow the subtitles, and so I had to go back to catch the dialogue. I take that as a good sign. And, overall, this was a good mystery with its attached narrative of police taking the easy road rather than doing a proper investigation. (7/10)
