Smart. Funny. Scary.

Warning: Spoilers
The beginning of the second half of season 6 has won back my love for American Horror Story. As promised, this episode has changed the dynamic for the entire season, and I'm totally on board with it.

One of my biggest gripes with the first 5 episodes was the fact that we knew Matt, Shelby and Lee would survive because they were telling the story. I felt this really removed a lot of the tension and honestly it made me care less about the characters. Now all the real life characters and re-enactment characters have been placed in the Roanoke house together, and it has been revealed that by the end of the three days, ALL of the characters will dead.....except one. Brilliant! It feels like the beginning of a Quentin Tarantino film, knowing how it will end but not knowing the story leading up to the ending.

All of the actors seem to be having much more fun in their roles now. I especially love Evan Peter's wacky red headed Rory (It's a shame he was the first to die though), and i'm excited to see how Cheyenne Jackson's character fits into this new story. But let's talk about the most shocking part of "Chapter 6" - Sarah Paulson's British accent. She nails it. At first I thought it was going to distract me but I got used to it very quickly! Gosh there's really nothing I didn't like about this episode, except maybe the lack of an opening title sequence (I guess we're not getting one for Roanoke?).

I loved this episode and I am incredibly excited for the remaining 4 chapters. We're Still waiting on Taissa Farmiga and Finn Wittrock to make their appearances - I'm calling it now, Taissa Farmiga is gonna be playing the real life version of Scáthach, the original supreme (that would fit nicely as she could be an ancestor of Zoe from coven).

Return To Roanoke?
American Horror Story Roanoke has got to be the most fun filled, surprise, horrifying, and well thought out season since American Horror Story Asylum. My Roanoke Nightmare is not just a regular horror show anymore. It is a show within the show, within the show, within the… um, let us dig deeper.

In Chapter 6, we come across Cheyenne Jackson's Sidney; he is a visionary reality TV producer who brought a hit to The Network with My Roanoke Nightmare. He is so visionary; in fact, he is already selling the corporate suits on his next project: Return to Roanoke: Three Days in Hell. He will unite everyone who lived in the house with the actors who played them, together again in Roanoke, living in the haunted mansion during the blood moon, a.k.a. "when the sh*t hits the fan!" And this "real" version of the "Roanoke Nightmare" is already about 10 times scarier than the version we've already seen.

In my opinion, this episode was the Kathy Bates hour. She came off as funny, horrifying, and really sick! Kathy Bates' Agnes, who played Thomasin White in the documentary, is the first dramatic re-enactor to offer a talking head interview in the documentary sequel. She gushes over how playing the Butcher was the role of a lifetime but her happiness is quashed when her interviewer brings up a mental breakdown in which she stumbled through the streets of Hollywood deliriously impersonating the Butcher.

Angela Bassett did a fantastic job at directing this episode. She show was filled with laughs, scares, gore, and all that good stuff. It was a good shift for the show to introduce the "real life" people into the show. Sarah Paulson's Audrey Tindall reveals a British accent that is somewhat hokey, like she's doing an impression on Saturday Night Live; but, hey, she's having fun.

The show offers a good twist, and questions towards the end of the show. Will there be a new Butcher? Played by whom? Could it be, dare I say it... Jessica Lange! Furthermore, the twist has provided something of a genre change-up; with the chills of what we have seen before now having the added dimension of the slasher and found footage genre. With the cameras all set up and the actors moved in, a new title card pops up to reveal another major hook for the season. Everything's gone very Blair Witch Project.

It announces that everything we are about to see is merely found footage; the show was never aired because everyone involved died in "mysterious circumstances". Except for one. Who could it be?

More twists and turns than an Agatha Christie novel
bxhanx8 August 2021
I love classic horror, and shows/movies that pay homage to classic horror and slasher flicks, all the way back to the original Nosferatu. I love the modern horror movies that people like James Wan, Eli Roth, Rob Zombie, and others make. Throw in some suspense and twists and turns and you have the perfect horror movie, or, in this case, series.

This season of AHS fits the bill, almost completely. There are so many twists and turns that you're never comfortable that you might actually know what is going to happen. The surprises keep coming, and the gore isn't over the top, but it's more the idea of what is being done to some of the victims. Although, with that being said, there is some fairly graphic gore. It's not the cheesy gore of Raimi movies, it's intense.

There is no shortage of "star power" with Kathy Bates, Cuba Gooding, Jr., Angela Bassett, Wes Bentley, and Adina Porter. Throw in AHS mainstays Sarah Paulson, Denis O'Hare, Even Peters, Cheyenne Jackson, among others, and you have a solid foundation.

Perhaps the greatest aspect of season 6 is that it doesn't make you feel like you're watching the same AHS actors in "just another story." You completely forget about their other forays in AHS because this season demands your complete attention. If you miss a minute of it, you'll need to rewind to keep up.

As far as horror series, this one is a 10. Pit it against horror movies, and it's a 9. I only gave it a 9 because there are some fairly apparent goofs that should have been caught. But, it's easy to overlook those goofs if you're keeping in tune with the story.

It's definitely worth watching.

Wow!
Dreviews1625 October 2016
This episode changed American Horror Story completely for me. I had earlier followed this show because of strong characters and the quirkiness which Mr. Murphy brought about. However, this season has been complete surprise package, the first five episodes being somewhat in a similar tone to those of the earlier seasons. But the kind of realism seen in episode 6 fits in very well with the scheme of things. And the best part is that It was all well-known to us. Mr. Murphy had hinted and discussed the twist in advance, yet it hits as a surprise. And there are better things to come yet, as he continues to drop hints. AHS might well set the standard for shows in the future.

Will eagerly await how AHS team will continue to surprise us!

Easily the best episode in years
teaguemcmartin28 October 2016
Halfway through season 5 I wrote a review on here. I mentioned my disappointment with the pace of the story. I lamented the complete lack of levity. I also mentioned that I would not continue watching if the season did not improve. It certainly did not improve. Luckily, I am a liar and continued watching. Season 6 didn't have an amazing start but it was a unique enough premise to keep me watching. Alas, after slogging through the morass of the last two seasons we have been given an episode that is equal parts comical and creepy. The writing, the directing, Kathy Bates...i need more episodes like this. I have watched the episode after this (6.7). Although it wasn't a bad episode, the season definitely peaked with this episode. This is the first season since Coven that I am more than halfway through the season and actually want to see more.

Amazing episode
aniloracyesre26 October 2016
This episode totally restore my faith in this season. The first 4 chapters of the season where kind of slow passed and even though they explained a lot about the characters and everything they've been through, it didn't felt real...until this chapter. This is by far the best episode of this season.

Everything was so jumpy, gory and totally unexpected. I recommend this season and the show to everyone i know, Ahs Roanoke proves it will reinvent the horror genre by bringing back the simple scare factors used in every horror movie ever made, and make them feel as new and innovative.

This so far pointless story line of season 6 finally makes some sense
elenagapi26 October 2016
Warning: Spoilers
The so far pointless story line of season 6 finally gets some meaning. Episode 6, far from being true to the horror genre and more about drama, serves as an introduction to the "real" horror story to come, given that the 5 previous episodes allegedly belong to a TV- show, broadcast in 2015 and gained massive popularity. The new plot line concerns a new three-day special, in which the actors of the docudrama "My Roanoke Nightmare" and the "real" survivors return to the supposedly haunted house during the bloody full moon. This smartass twist gives an alibi to the unjustified actions of the flat and sketchy characters in a narrative without definite premise and straight direction. Despite the plot-holes thus far-an issue that will not be addressed in this review- the newly established conditions, the re-introduced characters and their intra- relationships create some instinctively high stakes.

A new dynamic, that can shortly described as antagonistic, is being developed between the characters of the production team and the "true" survivors. The cynic people of the media and the traumatized ones of the every-day life create also a double-layer of premises. For instance, Sydney's motive- the producer of the show- is of course all about the money, following the new trend of porn violence on reality TV. But much more is at issue for the viewers of the reality show as well as for the viewers of American horror story. The deeper objective of the show is to uncover the killer of Lee's husband- a mystery remained unsolved by the end of the previous show- and that's one of the reasons why the new plot is quite thickening and multidimensional; it is not only enlightening about the true nature of the broadcast episodes, but is also very promising about the scary story, that just begun. The greed of the production team and the ignorance of the participants are cooking a deadly recipe for the newly launched main plot. Moreover the characters gain some depth (at last!), since they are re-introduced as the directed personas of a TV-show, exposing their true identities and thus personalities. Their aims and desires are now much more clear, realistic and convincing, although they remain, without knowing it, the sheer puppets of a TV-production and the soon-to-be victims of the haunting spirits.

Ryan Murphy is creating once more a meta-narrative, manipulating our sense of reality, filtered by the mass media, reshaping the cliché narrative formula of the classic horror film and commenting on it. His main tool is self-reference, that exposes the means of a TV- production, because "people are interested in the process" of film- making- as Sydney aptly puts it. Furthermore he challenges our sense of morality, by giving away the tragic ending of the shooting. But if we were viewers of the reality sequel, we would still be watching it, right? Last but not least, the choice made to frame the main plot- meaning the gathering of the actors and the "real" survivors in the haunted house- into a reality TV-show production is an excellent comment on the American society, considering its obsession with the media, self-exposure and voyeurism. Whether the creators of the show agree with this principle or not, they surely project modern America's tagline: if you're on TV, you matter!

Smart, funny, but still not how to do Found Footage
Matt10184 August 2020
First half of this episode had me blown away by the highly unique premise coming off the first half of the season. Unfortunately, if we're explicitly told that this is found footage and not a TV show or something, it certainly does not have a bass nor sound effects. FOUND FOOTAGE CANNOT HAVE JUMPSCARE SOUND EFFECTS. COME ON....

S6.E6 - Decent Episode [8/10]
panagiotis19934 February 2024
Warning: Spoilers
(S6. E6) My Live Reaction / Review for American Horror Story Season 6 Episode 6 ''Chapter 6''. The previous episode was good and I gave it a rating of 9.6/10. Let's see if this one is better or worse. So all these awful things happened and they wanna make a show about it and make money from it? That's so cruel. I seriously hope the Butcher will appear and kill everyone involved. So everybody will die one by one, I like that but I wonder, if the show got canceled, who released the found footage? Also I wonder who will be the last man (or woman) standing. Overall this episode was good and I enjoyed it. My rating is 8/10.

Pitiful
andy_boulton25 July 2017
Warning: Spoilers
I love American Horror Story. I came to the party quite late and started binge watching box sets a year ago and was looked my forward to the latest season especially when I found out what the theme was going to be, but this season is spectacularly dreadful and the only horror to be found is in the script writing-especially in the dialogue; oh my God she's a 'ho- mee-cidal' maniac shrieked in the weirdest English accent since Dick van Dyke. A repetitive chase and hide splatter and slash sequence set over 10 episodes ripping off the majority of 'found footage' and reality TV horror movies with the only actor to escape with any credit being Angela Bassett.

Back to the drawing board for Season 7.
