A punchy and pacy first episode in this crime thriller adapted from a book by Mark Billingham.
DI Helen Weeks (MyAnna Buring) as had enough of chasing drug dealers and benefits cheats in Manchester. She is pregnant and her partner Paul Hopkins (Ben Batt) also a detective is happy with the news, she is less so.
When Helen catches news footage of two girls who have disappeared in the fictional Derbyshire town of Polesford where Helen grew up, she recognises that the main suspect is the husband of her best friend, Linda. Helen gets seconded to the investigation.
When she arrives at rainy Polesford she finds that the murder detective Tim Cornish (Ashley Walters) is determined to pin it on Linda's husband, Stephen Bates. There is a DNA match, he liked teen porn and it looks like a open and shut case especially when one of the girl's body is found in the woods. However Helen seems dissatisfied with the investigation.
Obviously there are several strands at play here. Helen is pregnant but the father may not be Paul. There seems to be an incident in the past that affected Helen and Linda as teenagers that might mirror what is happening at the present.
At the moment we are kept in the dark but the opening episode did have its fair share of clichés or other suspects.
