Richard Garland manages the lavish Halcyon Hotel, but it's London 1940, and the Country is soon to be at War with Germany. The Halcyon plays host to Lord Hamilton, his hotel, he hosts dignitaries and his loud Mistress Charity. His wife, fully aware of his affairs issues him with her intent to leave him, during a party for returning son Freddy, Lord Hamilton has a heart attack and dies, making Freddy the new Lord Hamilton.
Superbly stylish, The Hotel looks wonderfully lavish. The costumes too, utterly incredible, whoever had the responsibility of creating a the look and feel of this did a first rate job. It's nicely shot too, it's very easy to watch.
Alex Jennings is great as the lecherous Lord Hamilton, well performed in general, such a shame he only got one episode. Hermione Corfield perhaps stole the show as Emma.
The trend for forties dramas continues, Foyle's War, Close to the enemy, Home fires, perhaps slightly less of a story to tell, but still quality drama, I look forward to seeing this unfold. 8/10
