Easy to watch.
Sleepin_Dragon3 April 2020
Eighty minutes of amusing comedy drama, don't expect major laughs and don't hope for any great depth, what you have here is just an easy to watch nice movie. It has an almost old fashioned vibe about it, which I liked.

Jeff Garlin is very good in the role, he's amusing and likeable. I wonder if they were eyeing up a series from this?

How gorgeous is that dog! 6/10.

Netflix, please tell me you're kidding
blanche-27 May 2017
This pathetic Netflix original makes me wonder if they're running low on product.

"Handsome" is a murder mystery starring Jeff Garlin (who also co-wrote and directed). It concerns the murder of a neighbor's babysitter. The murderer tells you who he is before the actual story starts - don't ask.

This film tried to be wacky and funny, but it wasn't. The characterizations and the dialogue went too far so that instead of wacky and offbeat, it came off as forced, as if someone sat down and said, what can I throw in here to make it seem wacky and offbeat. Unfortunately, that someone was not the Coen Brothers.

There were cameos by Joe Kenda of the ID Discovery Channel and Kelly Cuoco. As far as I'm concerned, Leah Remini also had a cameo, and it was less than Kenda and Cuoco had.

Some people on this board stopped watching. I was tempted but persevered to see just how bad it could get. Verdict: Pretty bad.

I gave this one a chance, but I just could not watch it after 31 minutes and had to do a rare thing for me, turn it off.

Billed as a comedy, and for some it probably is funny, but I found it just bad.

I noted that Jeff Garlin wrote, directed and starred in it, well sorry Jeff, but your movie sucked.

I gave it 4 and I think that was generous.

Unfunny, boring, had to stop!
Sam6676 May 2017
I'm always sceptical when I see the director is the writer and the main cast in his or her own film. Don't get me wrong, a director who writes his own film is one thing I really like, but he/she should not play the main character, that usually turns out really bad. And this is the case here again. I was mildly excited to see this one, Rated R, I believe, with Natasha Lyonne, which I really like, she's one underrated actress with a great film résumé, but what I got was so unfunny and just plain boring I had to stop after 20 minutes in. And I was also (little) annoyed by Jeff Garlin, his voice and his presence in all, I just couldn't stand him anymore.

I really don't get Netflix, they are able to do some nice works (Narcos, Sand Castle), and they can do this also..meh, 2/10

It is what it is

Warning: Spoilers
I don't rate movies compared to other movies, rather by their achievement within their self determined construct. I believe this is a "9" without the spoiler in the beginning. The story may have been predictable, but the characters and the dialogue were not. It's very unique in that none of the characters are very likable, but most all are intriguing. The daughter and her friend were hilarious, possibly have great careers ahead. The mom's lines were poetic and truthful. What the movie lacked in depth, it made up for in breadth. While the the characters were not "well developed," in this type of movie, "a little dab'l do ya!" It is what it is.

Warning: Spoilers
How to review a movie this bad while not cursing? I'll do my best. It was the worst movie I've seen since Rollerball. Almost completely devoid of humor, dumb (and not dumbly funny either), boring, and a complete waste of time. I finished it just because it was so bad I kept waiting to see anything which validated Netflix's decision to make it. It couldn't have been the script (all over the place with only the weakest of narratives to sustain it); it couldn't have been the acting (ranged from dreadful to only okay); it couldn't have been the ham handed direction... In fact, the only decent part of this streaming pile was the cinematography. I don't understand how Netflix can make such great TV, and then produce a turd like this. The lesson for Netflix is to be involved in the creative aspect of creating films, and, in the event a film turns out this bad, don't release it and Sully your brand. Or at least release it quietly and under some other brand than that of Netflix. This is truly a cringe worthy film, and I highly recommend skipping it. I've already lost 80 minutes of my life to it so that you don't have to, too. What a gigantic waste.

3/15/18. Did finish watching the whole movie. Wouldn't say it was quality viewing. Story only average, as was the acting. If you have nothing better to do...

Not bad Jeff Garlin, not bad
leeaf835 May 2017
This may be Murray Goldberg's big break and he certainly could have done worse.

While nothing groundbreaking, this quirky film hits all the right notes. A gem within the film is just how well Garlin's detective subordinates are written and acted.

One word of caution: while this film does something unique and daring for a so-called mystery and reveals the killer in the opening scene. Typically films centering around solving a mystery involve characters whom are extremely perceptive or buffoons who end up being the person least suspected to solve the case. This one meets halfway; the detectives all have their respective skills and flaws, The main charm to the film isn't the crime or plot itself but simply seeing the main character go about his job and life while investigating.

Too Bad

What has happened to film making? Do the people who make movies ever look at what they produce? They can't think that what they make is good. Maybe they think people will go for anything. Back to the drawing board for a good comedy. Jeff Garlin and I have something in common,we like the Cubs and we can't act.

Amazing music
oneileffect21 January 2018
The show was gently entertaining, a bit clunky, with a likable main character who is surrounded by unlikable people. Let's just say it was rough around the edges, but with good intentions.

HOWEVER, the soundtrack was amazing, jazzy and addicting. I could listen to that score all day long. Thanks, Ben Folds! You did a damn fine job.

Perfectly slow and Very Funny!!!
mudgeon-13 June 2017
From the trailer I thought this was going to be an ensemble type cop TV show where every member of the team had these wacky quirks. Happily surprised that it wasn't that, and that it wasn't a show but a movie. It was so hilariously slow and befitting the main character, every second was like a big sigh of "Is this really my life". The camera lingers on how uncomfortable he is in certain situations as everyone around him says things that are wrong, yet he's resigned to "this really is my life". It's not mean spirited at all but an observation of LA and "well it takes all types". When he asks Natasha Lyonne's character to "Do the thing" with the iPhone text?!! Now I DO want it be a show that comes on a few times a year and a new neighbor moves in next door and Natasha Lyonne meets some new witness and I sit back with some coffee and enjoy every second. I won't even get into the layers of murder mystery movie of the week spoofing that help propel the story, but knowing full well who did it is half the fun of watching everyone get there. As I'm writing this I want to watch it again right away to see one of the characters say "did you sign off on this" again and again. I don't write movie reviews ever but I wanted to help at least one person out there look past the other reviews, "take a breath" and enjoy a great movie.

the Captain interrogates his suspects
ksf-214 February 2021
From... netflix. detectives Handsome (Jeff Garlin) and Scozzari (Natasha Lyonne) are trying to figure out who the murderer is, and they stumble bumble their way through the suspects. she sleeps with at least one of them. gathering evidence, no doubt. written and directed by Garlin, who was also Captain on Wall-E, so everytime he speaks, you think of that. small matter. it's a fun caper, as we follow the clues, but I don't think it's meant to be taken seriously. some running gags. Handsome goes down these little side roads, which are pretty funny. and Scozzari is way too honest about her body parts and sex life, which grosses him out. kind of a weird ending, but we DO find out who the murderer is. funny one minute cameo by kaley cuoco. it's all pretty good. as of today, it's rated 5.2, so there may not be more of this. the title makes it sound like they were considering making more...?

What?
sondra-135 May 2018
Definitely in the vein of Curb Your Enthusiasm, but not as funny. I'm surprised Jeff Garlin didn't do more with this. I get the irony, the super dry humor. However, it's very predictable, and the jokes are cheap. But, it kinda grew on me, as I watched, and I see the potential for more episodes. If I have the choice, I'd rather watch CYE, but I like Jeff Garlin, so I'd probably give in and watch more if they produce a series.

Not funny
sadak759911 May 2017
I gave this an opportunity, because I like comedies, I like wacky comedies, I think Netflix is doing a great job with its productions and I think Jeff Garlin have talent.

But I was able to stand just 20 minutes. After that, I just stopped before the damage were permanent and looked for other stuff to escape from the showhole.

Handsome is simply dumb, slow, absurd in a bad way and uninteresting. What is the worst fault of a comedy?. Yes: being unfunny.

Jeff Garlin is a great comedian
nkweddle7 May 2017
I love Jeff Garlin. He's a great comedian and he was great on Curb. But, I have to wonder where his mind was while writing this script. The movie is totally flat, lacks an interesting story line, and has no opportunities for even a slight chuckle. Not to mention it's boring enough to make 81 minutes feel like 3 hours. I'm sorry, I really wanted this to be good. And I really want good comedians like Jeff to be successful when they branch out and attempt to make movies. But this one is miserable.

Never seen any Jeff Garlin movie until this. It's a decent comedy and found it very entertaining unlike other reviewers. Jeff is a funny man in a low key kind of way and not overly out there.

Opposite of Handsome in every possible way!
filmsbyq6 January 2019
Warning: Spoilers
JESUS wept! Once again. I am reviewing a Netflix film. I watch them so that you do not have to. You're welcome. In the case of Handsome: A Netflix Mystery Movie, the only mystery is how the heck this 'movie' ever got made! Truth be told, it feels like bullying to review this film. It is that bad. I actually have begun reviewing this film before it has even ended, otherwise it would be totally unwatchable and I would not, in good faith, be able to review a film I have not seen. The film opens with, actor Talbert Bacorn (Steven Weber), exiting his pool and confessing to camera that he is the murderer. We then meet detective Gene Handsome (Jeff Garlin), who is teaching some rookie detectives the ropes. All the detectives are morons. One of the would-be detectives, Burt Jerpis (Brad Morris) spins a preposterous yarn as a possible theory for a murder. It is meant to be humorous. It is not. The other would-be detectives look on gormlessly. There is no good reason to make Handsome a retiring detective. It does not serve the plot or the comedy. It seems it was only added so Amy Sudaris' horny and seemingly menopausal lieutenant Tucker could come and bawl at him about filling out his retirement paperwork whilst making crass advances. It is as funny as it sounds Handsome - so funny, because he's not! - returns home. He has a big dog that he walks past his neighbour, Durante (Eddie Pepitone), who is an ex-detective and shouts out to him, accusing him of letting his dog foul his lawn. We, the viewer, are then subjected to another unfunny scene about detecting skills and introduced to his morose partner, Esta (Leah Rimini) who then sits on the porch and plays the accordion.. We never see Esta again. We also find out he has a new neighbour. Handsome takes it upon himself to go and meet the neighbour. She is not in when he gets there, but he does meet the babysister, Heather (Hailee Keanna Lautenbach) who is abrupt and refuses to let him in the house. The next day she turns up murdered on the lawn of Bacorn's home. Handsome is picked up by his perennially horny partner, Fleur Scozzari (Natasha Lyonne) and they precede to talk utter, unfunny nonsense on their drive to the crime scene. Scozzari turns out to be a bit of a nymphomaniac, getting sexual innuendo or references in whenever on screen. As Handsome investigates Heather's murder, he finds that she was not exactly well loved or even liked by anybody. He also finds out that his neighbour, Nora's (Christine Woods) ex-husband paid Heather to spy on her, as he is fighting for custody of his daughter, Carys (Ava Acres). Okay, so Handsome eventually catches the murderer and meets Kaley Cuoco playing herself in an utterly pointless scene - like the rest of the film. He returns home to find his neighbour moving out and labouring the point that she is never going to see him again. He encounters Durante for another unfunny scene and then the film, thankfully, ends. I do not even know where to start to express just how utterly dreadful this film is. Running at eighty-one minutes, this is a short film by any normal standards. Unless you are watching it. Then it becomes an excruciatingly long film. Written, directed by and starring Jeff Garlin, the only positive I can see is that he gave many friends employment. If I was Garlin I would change my friends. How any of them could allow a work this inept to get made is beyond me. I have a pretty low bar for comedy. I enjoyed Pixels and the Ghostbusters remake. I am not a comedy snob. This film is not, by any stretch, a comedy. It is an entirely laugh free zone. The real problem - besides the poor writing - is not deciding what sort of a comedy to be. It is like a lightweight saucy comedy, which is an oxymoron in itself, as saucy comedic properties are inherently lightweight. With the exception of the child actors, the dogs and Garlin, no actor really commits to their character. Not that they have much to work with, such is the paucity of a line worth uttering in the script. If a YouTuber produced a comedy this bad it would get ripped to shreds in the comments, much less a production backed by the predominant streaming platform on the planet. Nothing works in this film. The plot is nonsense, the humour non-existent, the scenes lack any punch, it is completely unoriginal and probably at least an hour too long. The best thing in the film is a woman who is seen hula hoop dancing in the distance by Handsome, whilst on her front lawn, in a couple of scenes. This film is basically a collection of sketches that would barely make it to the cutting room floor of an SNL show. It might seem that I am labouring the point of how unfunny this film is. I really am not. The stand out comedy-free scene is when Handsome and his team of inept detectives, eight of them standing in a semicircle at the murder scene, come up with ridiculous possible theories as to how the killing might have happened. Jerpis has another ridiculous scenario that is not funny. A bus full of Japanese tourist, doing a star's house tour, pull up in front of house and then we - the viewer - are forced to read unfunny exchanges as all the tourist speak in Japanese and Scozzari tries to tell them there is nothing to see. This film is so bad it makes anyone who has any ambition of making films - me - angry. This film has production value, a massive - mostly unnecessary - cast, extras, good, competent, camera and sound. Utterly lacklustre direction. In conclusion, this film has no redeeming qualities whatsoever. Every joke misses the mark. I don't even think the jokes can see the mark! This is a bad, bad film.

At last. An actual comedy. Not that much mystery though.
GiraffeDoor12 September 2022
Feeling more like a long pilot than a movie, this is an appealing and refreshing example of a real comedy. One that does not just try to pass itself as a comedy when it's really a drama.

The humor is absurd and uncomfortable, but they know what they're doing. It often involves non-sequiturs.

It's not too much of a mystery and I did feel that it wraps up a bit suddenly, but I suppose it is a comedy after all.

You even come to like the detective protagonist and they totally made you hate the victim before they got hacked.

The child is sort of fun too and so is the dog. I'm sort of thinking of whatever I can to fill up this review. And there we go.

Dark Wacky Eccentric Sexy and Funny
vrajabhumi5 May 2017
This seemed like a trial for a TV series in that it would fit very well into an episodic framework, oh, and it is very funny. Not everyone will find this funny just like not everyone finds Curb Your Enthusiasm to be funny, to name a previous Jeff Garlin incarnation. The humor is in the same vein as CYE where we find the lead character playing the put-upon guy in world of wacky and or eccentric characters, with the central character often being seen as schlubby by the eccentrics. Although Jeff Garlin as Gene Handsome isn't an eccentric like Larry David is in CYE, he plays in a similar setup for him to interact with, also with celebrities in bit parts, one even playing themself like in CYE. While this isn't on the same level of greatness as CYE, it is still very funny and not in the tiresome way which network TV presents in its attempts to be all things to all people, this movie is unapologetic adult humor, and I hope it does became a regular series. As for the other main parts, Natasha Lyonne steals every scene she is in as Gene Handsome's detective nympho partner, and Amy Sedaris is hilariously seductive as Gene's Lieutenant boss.

slow & unspectacular, but really surprisingly good
banzaiortiz30 October 2017
Warning: Spoilers
I really liked the movie, it's a fun concept and would also do well as a TV series.

Handsome (played by Jeff Garlin) is a rather slow, but very intelligent and down-to-earth detective. Somehow his entourage and more or less all other characters in the movie are just nuts, and it's extremely funny to see the main character (Handsome) interacting with them in his slow and down-to-earth way. And i think this is the fun of the movie, these interactions and scenes.

A downer is that the murderer is already revealed in the first scene, it does not really make sense to do that - unless it's a marketing thing :) But maybe it's also a Columbo-kinda thing. On the other hand, the fun part of the movie is really the character interactions. You should not expect a real murder mystery movie.

It does have a "Curb your enthusiasm" vibe to it somehow. I think if you like Jeff Garlins humour you'll like the movie as well.

Pure dreck
lketel11 September 2019
Perhaps I'm too used to watching great movies and tv series on Britbox and Acorn (where the actors and writers know their craft), to appreciate this LA situated black comedy. The acting was so wooden that I finally decided Ihat all the bad acting and inane dialogue were the promised "comedy." Instead of competent acting, situations and comic characters, the movie's comedy simply depended on throwing out great gobs of gratuitous profanity at the viewer. While there are so many really terrific shows on Netflix (Money Heist, for one) please don't waste one precious moment on this dreck.

"Mystery" I do not think that word means what you think it means.
vitacus8 May 2017
Warning: Spoilers
Spoiler alert: This movie spoils itself.

This movie, right from the start, lets you down. It is not a mystery. In a baffling move from the film makers, the actor who plays the killer introduces himself as the actor who plays the killer. Thus spoiling itself. If this scene had not been included then this movie would have been a mystery. If it was meant to be funny, it failed. Telling us who the killer was at the start had zero pay off.

I enjoy episodes of Columbo, but never do I consider it to be in the mystery genre because you always see the murder and murderer right from the start and then the enjoyment is watching Columbo first getting onto them and then hounding them in his pleasant way while gathering whatever clues they left behind. In the case of detective Handsome, he was not really enjoyable to watch work.

Another reason I decided to watch this movie was because I thought it might be like another comedy mystery I have seen called "No Clue" starring Brent Butt. That movie was a low key comedy but not too low, and it was an actual mystery the viewer got to follow along with.

This movie is a low key comedy but too low key for my tastes. I watched this movie from start to finish hoping for a few bits that would be memorably funny. I was let down in that regard. I barely cracked a couple smirks.

The best thing I can say about "Handsome: A Netflix Mystery Movie" is I didn't hate it.
