Another meaningful movie of this year. Yet another time Irfan khan has proved his acting prowess. This is a story of a common man who stands against the corrupt system to search answers; answers which are harsh and even if we know them nothing will change. But knowing them are very much necessary for us. The story telling of the movie is good and I would say that would go to the brand of Nishikant Kamat. But what I personally liked the most about this movie is that it has pointed out the fact that what might happen in real-life and what we pay to see in reel-life if any commoner takes such a bold step. This movie emphasizes the fact that GOVERNMENT IS NOT CORRUPT, BUT THE GOVERNMENT IS FORMED TO DO CORRUPTION. People may change,leaders may change political colors may change but corruption survives and we the common people let it survive by paying with our lives in the end.

Madari is a realistic movie which shows what's going on in the current society. I don't know why critics are reviewing this movie based on visuals, commercial elements or weekend collections.
Corruption became part of the life in India. I hope people will realize what we are losing exactly by not taking this as a serious issue. Forget about outside enemies or extremists - We have to act fast to keep our country safe from this dangerous enemy within. Wake up and fight this gangrene. It's now or never...
As usual Irfan portrays common-man character with ease. Kid Vishesh and Tushar also performed well.
My rating is 9/10. Go and watch it!

It's a gem of a movie, largely carried on by Irrfan Khan and an expressive chunk of kid (Vishesh Bansal) & grit of Jimmy Shergill (he is wasted though). The depiction of Father-Son relation is directed beautifully ...u can actually fall for them
In here Irrfan doesn't try to be the one man army fighting against the system unlike almost all vigilante justice movie, instead he lets the situation, grief and purpose drive the movie with his exceptional acting (among the best v have seen) especially the post- accident hospital sequence is gut wrenching. The dialogues carry punch and tears apart our psyche.
Nishikant Kamath's best direction after Mumbai Meri Jaan, though the movie falls short at some instances but they are well overlapped by Irrfan Khan's brilliance

Madaari, a Social-Thriller film by Nishikant Kamath, is one more attempt by a filmmaker to take head-on with the corrupt systems existing in our country. It is very much inevitable to draw parrallels with Neeraj Pandey's 2008 film 'A Wednesday'. A Wednesday was an engaging thriller with an unimaginable and unpredictable dramatic twist, which was set on the premise of terrorism. The underlying concept of Madaari is also the same, i.e. when a common man decides to raise his voice against the powerful, it does make a difference. I would admit that Madaari might lack the action-packed thrilling sequences as that of Wednesday, but Madaari has its own strengths and it also very successfully conveys the message. Although as a viewer, I did feel disillusioned. Not because the film is not good, but because, the subject of the film is so relevant. We are aware of these shortcomings of our society, system, government, hardly doing anything to change the system, still unable to bring any changes. But at least an effort to convey a pertinent point through such films generate hopes of changes in the outlook towards world and also making world a better place to live.

When he gets angry, you get angry. When he laughs, you laugh. When he cries, you cry. Irrfan Khan is one of the few actors of modern day cinema who carry unique ability to glue their audience with the celluloid moment in which they create their own reality. An Actor, who has achieved a sort of iconic status lately, has reappeared in his latest Bollywood venture "Madaari" directed by Nishikant Kamat who has previously directed films like "Mumbai Meri Jaan" and "Force". With powerful content, nonlinear storytelling with flashbacks and emotionally charged performance by Irrfan Khan, "Madaari" connects its viewers on their subconscious level and alleviates them to such an emotional state where it becomes difficult for them to differentiate between real and reel pain.
A society in which corruption has become daily routine and importance of a human life is always the last thing in the mind of ruling elite, justice seems like a Utopian idea. Under such circumstances a powerless commoner who is also grieving for death of his only son in man-made disaster, can either go for ending his own life or he can take completely different route by seeking answers from individuals who are indirectly accountable for the death of his son. By kidnapping only son of India's Home Minister, equivalent to Interior Minister of Pakistan, he creates such havoc in the heart of powerful ruling elite which eventually make them bow to his demands. Curiosity, anxiety and events leading to penultimate stage of the film are so profound which twitch viewers' sense of seemingly "All OK" perception and create such an impact drama on silver screen which pokes us hard. Nishikant Kamat has skillfully used the talent of Irrfan Khan like an error-free technician who wants nothing but excellence on every frame in which Irrfan Khan appears.
In today's world of Indian cinema where only content-less films crossing 100 Crores are important, "Madaari" is an anomaly which blatantly challenges pseudo-realm of typical Bollywood masala flicks. From the first frame to last 'Madaari' is an Irrfan Khan's film but Jimmy Shergill as Investigating Officer Nachiket Verma impresses with his serious but meticulous performance. On the whole "Madaari" is a kind of film which gives you goose bumps and silent moments when you come out of cinema hall and words from Faiz Ahmed Faiz's famous poem "Bol Kay Lub Azaad Hain Tery" are said during final credits of the film in husky voice of Irrfan Khan.

Directed by Nishikant Kamat, Madaari is a must-watch socio-thriller film of 2016. The story begins with a breaking news of the kidnapping of Home Minister's son. No Indian thriller completes without having a cop as important character in the story. There comes a clean CBI officer Nachiket Verma (played by Jimmy Shergill) in the picture, who is given responsibility for ensuring the safety of minister's son throughout the case and hunting down the kidnapper Nirmal (played by Irrfan Khan). As the story proceeds, CBI's role loses dominance in the story as the kidnapper himself takes care of minister's son and solves the entire case to get caught (or let's say
surrender). Sounds stupid, isn't it? Well, that's just about one side of the coin. The other side is about kidnapper Nirmal, a common man, who has lost his son in a bridge collapse caused by negligence and high-level corruption by authorities. Nirmal's intentions and demands out of the kidnapping remain secret until he reveals his painful story to minister's son who later sympathizes with Nirmal. Madaari is a priceless depiction of love, separation, revenge, and most importantly, India's hypocrite politics. The movie lacks action, and the first half feels somewhat dull. However, Nishikant Kamat's superb direction and Irrfan Khan's phenomenal acting has proved it (once again) that this masterpiece couldn't be any better.

Nishikant tried to showcase the anger of common man against system and corruption similar Neeraj Pandey did in A Wednesday. Script was simply brilliant however climax need more thriller and more drama. Dialogues were really awesome and have punch. Nishikant has beautifully captured Father-son bonding in flashback. Impeccable performance from Irrfan with full emotions, grief,broken heart. Jimmy was terrific in the role of canny cop. Vishesh was good in role of kidnapped boy. Tushar was looking great in helpless father role as well as powerful home minister role. Nitesh role will remind you Deepal Shaw role in A Wednesday.There was not much scope for Music.
Madaari is a thought-provoking film, and it does evoke strong emotions.

Simultaneously various news flashes in regard to the various contemporary incidents happening in various corners of the country, right from the collapse of a bridge to increase in the vegetable prices to farmers' suicides, inflation, unemployment, water crisis etc. The frames move to the breaking news of kidnapping of Home Minister Prashant Goswami's (Tushar Dalvi) son Rohan Goswami (Vishesh Bansal). Then we get to see bearded Irrfan Khan in a moving train. Frames move to the flashback of how Irrfan manages to kidnap Rohan from a school hostel in Dehradoon. In Delhi, Rohan's parents Prashant and Jaya are worried due to Rohan's kidnapping. Prashant and the Chief Minister Nimbadkar deputes Nachiket Varma (Jimi Shergill), a cop, to find out the what, why and how of Rohan's kidnapping and also to rescue him. The biggest challenge before Nachiket is that the face / whereabouts of the kidnapper are unknown. Meanwhile Irrfan continues his journey along with Rohan in different hideouts with different makeovers. Slowly a bond develops between Rohan and Irrfan. Irrfan's story slowly unveils through various scenes. The film does evoke strong emotions. Irrfan, who is a distraught father, describes himself as an ideal voter, who is just busy bringing up his son as a single parent. His whole world is his 7-year old son Apoorva. What happens to him, when his whole world itself crashes and he loses the very meaning of life ?
How the story develops further? How Irrfan handles the high profile kidnapping? How does Nachiket gather various clues, and interconnects various leads ? Is Nachiket able to crack the kidnapping case and rescue Rohan? How does Irrfan save himself from the world's eyes? How and when does his identity from a Anam Kumar (a person who does not have any name) to Nirmal Kumar is revealed ? What was Nirmal's motive behind Rohan's kidnap ? How the movie ends? Who wins in this hide and seek game?
I could not stop myself from comparing this film with A Wednesday. Certain commonalities between both the films: The very underlying concept of the common man rising against the system. The technical set up preparations done by Irrfan Khan gives the same feel as that of Naseeruddin Shah's set up in Wednesday. Jimmy as an actor is another common factor in both the films.
Music is also good and lyrics are thought-provoking. The song Masoom Sa is very nice.
Certain dialogues are very much thought provoking. Pros and cons of social media are also shown, how people's perception changes in minutes under the influence of social media. The dialogues in regard to the rivalry of ruling party – opposition party fights being just political gimmicks, and either parties having win-win scenario whether they have the chair with them or not.
My only concern with the screenplay is that it is a very much predictable film and could it have ended in a different manner?

MADAARI - From the trailer it was clear that this one looks very similar to A Wednesday . And after watching it i can say it could have been called A Wednesday 2 , although the movie is not composed within a single day here. It was much grander then that , but in the way of being grander it compromised with the sleekness which a thriller needs to be.
A Wednesday is a great movie. And i mean that in a literal sense. GREAT is exactly the right word to define that movie. But A Wednesday was not the first movie to show a common man fighting the corrupt government . It was not the concept but the execution style which made A Wednesday such a great movie. It was sleek , tightly edited , a perfect thriller , edge of the seat drama. As i said in the review of TE3N that the most important thing which a thriller needs to have is fast pace . But Madaari didn't have it. Neither it was fast enough to keep you on the edge of your seat nor it has any shocking suspense to twist your mind. Only thing which carry the movie on its shoulders are performances. Irfan is brilliant as always , specially in the hospital scene when he lost his son. Jimmy shergil was good enough playing his own as well as Anupam Kher's character from A Wednesday as a single person. The movie often mixes itself with emotional drama , unnecessary long back story (also having song in back story) which even decreases whatever pace the movie has.
Although the climax interview with different authorities of higher post was great. Yes it was too much ANTI GOVERNMENT but it felt really good to hear a Home Minister to confess his corrupt works and agreeing that for government normal public are just toys to play with. Those last 30-40mins saved the movie a little bit with nice support from all the actors including child actor Vishesh Bansal.
But i would have liked some shocking reveals , some chasing sequences , some pace in the plot , some more editing , a pure thriller. Without those things it felt like a movie which i have already seen many times in the past. 6.9/10 by ANuP APu KuMaR

This is such a powerful film, and not just a film, but a powerful statement. The plot of the film deals with a man who has lost the only thing in life that is dear to him.
As a single parent, Nirmal Kumar(Irrfan Khan) life is fulfilled by caring for this little boy. All the spare time he has he spends with his son, playing with him and teaching him. On one occasion his son remarked about the whereabouts of his mother and he said that she left him for a career in the United States.
However Nirmal's life is shattered by an unforeseen calamity. I will not reveal more - you will have to see this brilliant film directed by an extraordinary director: Nishikant Kamat. I have already seen his previous films: Force(2011), Drishyam(2015) and Rocky Handsome(2016). I have also seen him act in the film 404(2011).
I have mentioned again and again how impressed I am with Irrfan Khan's steady rise in Bollywood. He is becoming the undisputed people's champion with films like these. I enjoyed his performance in Billu Barber(2009) and again in The Lunchbox(2013). In this film he is at the pinnacle of his acting prowess. He has managed to make tears fall from my eyes at many points in this film.
This is a powerful psychological drama and very relevant in today's world. The effect new digital technology is making in spreading information quickly around the world is shown in this film. Smartphones are by the billion in India, and then we have the newer iPads. So technology wise, a lot has changed in India. The age-old problem of government corruption in India is re-emphasized. Before I forget, I would like to mention the superb music in the film by the veteran music director Pritam. He has directed music in such hits like Dhoom(2004), Gangster(2006), Jab We Met(2007), Race(2008) and Bajrangi Bhaijaan(2015).
More film recommendations: Aakhree Raasta(1986), Hatya(1988), Dayavan (1988), Prahaar: The Final Attack(1991), Indian(1996), Yeshwant(1997).

Having watched A Wednesday, I was really looking forward to another common man seeks justice movie that would be as riveting and suspenseful as the former. Alas I was disappointed! Madaari is a slow- paced movie with average dialogues that are only rescued by the acting prowess of Irfan Khan and the boy, Vishesh Bansal. If not for them, I might not have been able to sit through the entire movie.
Without giving away the plot, I felt that the reason Irfan Khan was seeking revenge against the government was not as justified and thus I was unable to root for him as much as I wanted to. The climax also felt underwhelming and lacked the necessary punch. Overall, the movie was too long and could have been so much more. 6/10

Hard to believe but good to watch

I like Nishikant Kamat storytelling style and I liked his other films. His other films like "Force " was a good film and "Drishyam" was a very good film. But after these two good film he delivered a underperformed poor film which is "Rocky Handsome". But "Madari" sure surpassed his previous two ventures "Force" and "Rocky Handsome". I want to say this type of story is very fair choice and very rare for Bollywood cinema. Actor like Irrfan Khan is always good to watch in the big screen and I enjoy his acting. I felt sometimes that his overconfidence may be harmful for the roll but after complete the whole movie I want to say he is the perfect choice. Low budget movie, story dependent plot, no superstar cast
that all created very good environment for Irrfan and Nishikant also. This is a very enjoyable movie for low expectation holder audiences.
I already said that I like Nishikant Kamat's storytelling style and I like his movie's fast paced tone. But this movie may be had some shortage of pace and have some continuity problem. The director and Irrfan has done good job but screenplay has some basic problems like believable incidents and the consequences of one subplot after one. Some incidents really hard to believe and the editing and screenplay failed to convince you at those points.
Performance wise Irrfan was good, Jimmy Shergil was also good. Direction of Nishikant Kamat was above average, screenplay and editing was also above average and other technical aspects are above average.
I already said that I like Nishikant Kamat's storytelling style and I like his movie's fast paced tone. But this movie may be had some shortage of pace and have some continuity problem. The director and Irrfan has done good job but screenplay has some basic problems like believable incidents and the consequences of one subplot after one. Rising above all the shortcomings, it's Irrfan's effort that shoulders the complete burden of this flick. Substandard story, but good direction and great acting by Irrfan and kiddo Vishesh Bansal.

After the long gap, we get another original film from Kamath. Casting Irfan Khan as a lead was the best decision for this, who was already doing different sub-genres of road movie by then. This is a classic high-octane drama being a crime thriller. Having said that, it criticises the trope of revenge sagas by revealing the futileness of the same in the end. I liked that they even bashed the media industry, but had to cut something because of having slow pace.

A world so chaotic and yet so powerful that nobody bats an eye or takes a stand to point fingers at those who run the nation. An everlasting pursuit of degradation that gradually gnaws at the soul of this country. A business that chugs on fuels of the diligent, whilst people rhythmically sway as per the will of the throne.
PLOT OF MADAARI (SPOILERS PRANCING AHEAD) Irrfan Khan's Nirmal Kumar is as he puts it – that average man who doesn't have time to notice the negligence of the world, chiefly because he had his world in his lap. Then one day a mishap takes away the only he thing he ever cared about. That's when he decides to take the world by the storm to rip them apart.
"I will take this cheque and turn it into a dagger."
He kidnaps the son of the Home Minister of India, his wounds still fresh, to make a point and bring the whole Indian system down to its knees.
Vishesh Bansal was brilliant as Rohan Goswami. As a child actor with a loud mouth he does fairly well, and looks like he has a bright future ahead. Rajiv Gupta still doesn't cease to bring that humorous tinge to every tale he is associated with, tickling you occasionally with his thorough expounding.
IRRFAN KHAN'S MIND-BOGGLING PERFORMANCE Madaari is Irrfan Khan. Fueled by his impressive acting, it is a movie embellished by his passion. His nerve wrecking performance will bring tears to your eyes. His Nirmal Kumar is a character who we might have come across on the streets quite often. A blended contour of emotions that you never had a chance to meet just because you were too busy in your own world. If only you looked, if only you cared enough to notice.
His best performance lies in those devastating bits of insanity – When he is holding onto a filthy school bag and a dilapidated water bottle, sitting on the hospital floor for hours. A tearful father stopping passersby explaining his grief, whilst the world takes him for a loon. When madness seeps over him and he becomes oblivious of his own existence. When he finds his son lurking at odd instances of his imagination.
There are other gorgeous moments in the movie as well; beautiful lines that the extraordinary screenplay of Madaari housed. The voice-over of Irrfan made it all better. Poetry seeped in occasionally making dialogues even more so gorgeous letting us prey on pensive sentience. Madaari is a constant feast of beautifully written remarks that will fling you into deep musings.
WHERE MADAARI HITS LOW By the time you reach the climax of the movie there are two alternate endings inscribed within which the stunning editing of Madaari cashes in on – The first wherein Irrfan gets shot when he takes the bus, the other when he decides to take the train instead. The fact that the former is a more palpable story and would normally occur if you decide to take such colossal measures against the government, gives it more credibility. If Madaari is inspiring, which it is, a whole lot of the trodden are already thinking of a similar way to fight Government atrocities. To that I would say don't. That's how you will end up. That was reality right there. That's where the actual movie ends too.
But Nishikant Kamat had different plans for it, taking into account our unflinching attachment for happy endings. Even though he does justice to it, the movie uproots when the confessions come dropping in. Tushar Dalvi loses his placid demeanour and things start to look a little animated therefrom. But Irrfan comes to the rescue nevertheless and saves them all with his spectacular performance.
Also, Madaari's storyline is quite similar to that of Jodie Foster's Money Monster, which poses questions at its originality. But surprisingly Madaari was everything that Money Monster couldn't possibly become in its valiant attempt to stand against the corrupt.
THE FINAL VERDICT Apart from the aforementioned insignificant issues, there was nothing wrong with the movie. Editing was magnificently done. Music was superbly complementing the theme of the flick.
Irrfan stays the soul of the movie. Highly recommended! Don't miss it for the world.

A movie always works when a common man can connect with the story and the characters easily. Madaari does the same thing.
On one end there is Mr. Irrfan Khan who doesn't need any introduction and on the other end there is Nishikant Kamat who have directed well acclaimed movies like Mumbai Meri Jaan, Drishyam, Force etc. Movie begins with well written scene of kidnapping of Home Ministers Son from a hostel and after the security officials encounters the truth, the game begins.
Nirmal played by Mr. Irrfan Khan,a common man who lives his life in Mumbai happily soon some terrible incidence takes place which leads him to take such a strong step. All Nirmal needs is answer as a common man who have been frustrated with the corrupt system. Will he get the answer? What happens to him?
To get all the answer you need to watch Madaari.
Vishesh Bansal played by Rohan Goswami does fantastic job as Home Ministers son. Jimmy Shergill who plays the role of police officer is terrific. All the other supportive characters does decent job.
Script is decent and doesn't amaze the audience, also it has few ups and downs which leads to boredom in parts. But the only thing that stands apart is the acting of Mr. Irrfan Khan.

Not sure why people are rating this movie so high. There is nothing new in the movie and the film falls flat in its second half as well as the climax. Indian cinema have produced much better films in the past where the common man stands against the corrupt government, be it A Wednesday, Nayak or Hindustani among others.
Mumbai Meri Jaan was much better film directed by Nishikant Kamat's that depicts the life of a common man and how it gets affected by external scenarios.
Also, lately the films directed by him like Force, Rocky Handsome they aren't something which surprise you or you feel great about them. He was able to do justice with the remake of Drishyam though..
Coming back to this film, Irrfan tries to do justice with his role but the story doesn't holds your attention for much long.

I like the way Irrfan Khan acts, so meaningful and powerful messages in his movie, really a great actor and inspiration.
Great message for the public against governments who involved in doing corruptions on daily basis and in return we are just listening what they want us to, we are listening the count of loss 30, 40 and then 50 and increasing. Nation should stand against them, "Say No to Corruption" is just a statement to have in mind that it should be, they want us to just keep it in mind not to act for it.
I am from Pakistan, I love my country but not the rulers. They are all corrupt and doing the same as in the movie. Every night, a hope, that I will wake up in my corruption and crime free country.
