Strong Dramatic Story of Life and Faith
DKosty12310 September 2018
Warning: Spoilers
When you check the credits of this one and see that the God's Not Dead writer/director (Harold Cronk) is involved, you expect a really preachy story of Christian Faith. This assumption here would be totally wrong. Years ago there was a dramatic film about Vietnam Vets called "Coming Home" which addressed the issues facing those veterans when they came home. It was a powerful film. This one is just a little short of it in a different dramatic story line.

This film goes into the still going Afghanistan war and updates the story adding a crisis of faith to it. This plot addresses the crisis of a widow who lost her husband in Afghanistan, and nearly lets it destroy everything she has in her life. Her focus is on what she lost and not what she still has. Despite having a lot of help being offered to her by family and friends, she nearly loses everything. It is because she can not bring herself past her husbands death.

She has a young daughter to raise alone. death. While her friends and relatives are there, and keep offering her help, she will not open up about her personal dilemma and withdraws instead. Then the broken road starts to being in pieces that can fix her problems and she ignores them at first too. For instance, it is late in the film before she finally opens the last letter her late husband wrote to her.

The characters that help her throughout are her friends and neighbors at church, her mother-in-law, a race car driver, and a garage mechanic. They help despite her not letting them into her life with her daughter, who is the most important piece of her life still left. The race car driver has his own issues to address as well. The character who reminds me of the returning vet in coming home is the wheel chair bound Afghanistan vet, who needs to share something with her, but she keeps shutting him out.

The main weakness of this story is that while the daughters grandma is there to help her grand daughter and has to deal with losing her son in the war, there is no mention of grandpa, almost like he never existed as far as I can determine. I have to guess that for some reason Grandma is widowed. Andrew W. Walker as race car driver Cody Jackson is good support for Lindsay Pulsipher as Amber Hill (and this films center is Amber). Makenzie Moss as daughter Bree Hill has a solid performance as the 4th grader. LaDainian Tomlinson debuts as Pastor Williams and his scenes are good. The films cast is all solid.

I am glad to see a film looking at the loss here at home of an Afghanistan vet, and pray that some day we will be out of this conflict. It is now the longest conflict in our history. Afghanistan became totally ignored the last 10 years, too often by a US Media more interested in creating gossip for it's own agenda, versus reporting on real events.

NASCAR, Christian Music, Cliches Galore.

First the writer ignores the benefits available to widows of kia soldiers in order to make up the hackneyed cliche of poor widow about to lose her home to heartless banker. What did she do with the 100k death benefit and her monthly dic payment? Not supposed to think about these things. Problem with too many Christian movies, you have to leave your brsin at the door. The real story, the widow loses her faith and we watch as her daughter and friends try to get her to re-engage with her faith. Then we have to suffer through a competing Tom Cruze type coming of age NASCAR story. Please.

Some interest and enjoyment
Vinny373 May 2020
By and large good acting and script, although an army widow finding herself without any military income might seem a bit unreal. Churchy, but not too preachy, it explores starting out on the false premise that God is supposed to be micromanaging the whole show-if thing go wrong is it ineptitude by a caring manager, unconcern by an uncaring manager, punishment by an angry one, etc? On the other hand, if he is semi-interventionalist (philosophically sound), then the swings and roundabouts of life might often be merely cause & effect within nature, helped or hindered by our attitudes to life.

Philosophically a few might find the polytheism of some of the prayer & singing (the 'our-type-of-god' syndrome) a bit irksome. A largely satisfying film, however, with elements of self-sacrifice for others, and of self-insularity as a protective shielding (to love is to be vulnerable). And how hard a child can be to a parent who thinks they mean well, but don't realise they are drowning and dragging down their child when human affection has become demonic! The film has a feel good factor and a think through factor, but numerous holes.

Why Does the Widow need Money??
zenewiczpp17 March 2019
Warning: Spoilers
The main premise of this movie is so ridiculous that it destroys anything else good in this movie. The death benefit for a US soldier is 100K! This should have been enough to pay off the mortgage and then some. Then there are other benefits, such as widow's pension etc. So ridiculous, I couldn't even finish watching. Too bad. Good acting, nice music, all wasted.

Very inspirtational with a tiny bit of unbelievability

Warning: Spoilers
Being retired military and having been divorced, I was moved by the loss of her soldier husband and finding new life and love. My issue was with the debt problem. Military members are required to have life insurance, and she would have had other benefits at his death as well.

Great movie

I watch many of the recent movies out and none were as inspiring and emotional as this. Think it gets low ratings because it is a Christian movie and many are more into the movies that contain evil, horror etc over one that will bless your heart.

Interesting, and....cars.
dukeb0y26 May 2019
Warning: Spoilers
I am a critical movie reviewer, I either hate it, or love it. This one is tough. The bad was already mentioned, (The $100,00 death benefit, when and where is it?). Now the good,, the people reacting, for example,,when the diamond ring is sold to pay bills, that was well made. The cars (YES, I love cars), and they had a beater Firebird to drive around. Ya, I liked that.

And some of it was milky sweet, and actually, the acting was pretty good. Unusual for a low budget film. The acting again, was good.

Even me, seven stars, mainly for the acting. Some cute scenes, so....the ladies in our group really liked it.

Typical Christian movie
kipacha-2662622 February 2019
Warning: Spoilers
There was so much wrong with this movie. Christian movies are like shows in the '80s. They have to deliver a message. It really just ends up being preachy and overdone.

Things that were wrong. There's obvious tension between the widow and her MIL that is never really explored. But in the end, the widow is the one who apologizes. Maybe the widow had a right to not be warm & fuzzy with her MIL. She seems all too eager to throw her DIL under the bus, criticize her, and take her daughter from her. Then there's the church. If the widow was an active member of a church when she lost her hubby, they should have rallied around her during her time of need. Church people are to be the hands and feet of Jesus. You don't wait for people to ask for help. Use your eyes. This was a small town. Let's face it. They must have known or had some idea of her financial situation. Then there's the fact that the military takes care of its own with death benefits. So there should have been no reason for her to lose the house in the first place. And the whole NASCAR thing was just lame. Sprinkle the Christian music throughout, and you just have a really lame movie that is preachy. I would not watch this movie again nor would I recommend it unless the person I was recommending it to really like these kinds of movies.

I enjoyed this movie because it reminds us all that life is not always as we want it to be so we must always continue to have faith and continue to pray for guidance.

Hot Garbage
Alix9913 March 2019
Had to be subjected this not once but twice, the first time I wanted to be strapped to the bottom of a race car and the second viewing made me wish I was the one shot in Afghanistan. Its predictable trash you've basically seen this movie a thousand times, just shove about 300 southern/Christian cliche you can think of together and you've got this movie. I'm giving it a 2/10 simply because they turned the camera on and pointed it at the people without leaving the lens cap on.

This is for those that continually bash Christian movies. If there is a movie that I know I don't want to see or that I will disagree with the content - guess what I don't go - I don't get around people or websites and bash or criticize the movie calling it bad simple because I don't agree with it.

Realistic for a faith based movie
phd_travel5 February 2019
Warning: Spoilers
Lindsay Pulsipher has a difficult and sometimes unlikeable role to play - a widow having a tough time adjusting to the loss of her husband in Afghanistan. She loses her home to foreclosure, pushes away her helpful Mother in Law and a race car driver who likes her played by Hallmark regular Andrew W Walker. He looks a bit too disheveled here. Kim Delaney is a welcome presence as mom in law and she looks good a little elegant for the blue collar setting.

It's a partially realistic look at a widow facing financial and other issues. She gets quite unlikeable but that's life.

Worth a watch.

A Good Heartwarming Tale, but with Problems
holydiverdio18 April 2021
Warning: Spoilers
I really enjoyed the film, acting was good and very dramatic with some Religious aspects, but it has it issues. One thing that movie makers don't realize that the Wife of a Soldier killed during active duty wouldn't be struggling to make money. The Wife and Daughter in this story would be getting money from the Military and/or Government in the event of his death. Also, the Widow of a Military Husband wouldn't be driving around in a broken down mini van, that was shameful to see. What I don't understand, if this Widow was so loved by the people in her Church, why didn't they try to get a fundraiser or more to help her financially or even tried to help her seek counseling to help her with her grief at the lost of her Husband. They also had a guy from her husband's base tell her that if she needed any help with anything to come to them, but yet she is going around for two years after her husband's death without any financial aid when she should have been getting it. Another situation that is left unexplained, the race car driver, Cody is almost killed in a race, the Widow's Daughter prays he's ok and not dead, he survives, but the girl's Mom gets mad and takes her home, but why? They were not in a committed relationship and her late husband didn't die in his military humvee which could've caused her to be upset if he did die that way, then I could see her reason why she left after his crash. If they wanted a good story with a religious theme, they should have had it that the Wife refused to go back to Church cause that's where she got the news about her husband's death and her Family and friends were trying to help her all that time to not turn her back on God and her Faith. Had it that her Husband died in his humvee which would have explained her shock and anger over Cody almost dying in his race car which made her yank her Daughter out of the Go Cart club with the Church Sunday School, but she eventually turns back to God and the Church after her Daughter runs away and she found out that her Husband saved his comrade's life. All and all, still a good movie, but needs improvements with the script.

A Raisin in the Sun
lavatch9 December 2018
Warning: Spoilers
In the extras of the DVD, it was clear that the cast of "God Bless the Broken Road" was on board with the duel goals of this faith-based film. On the one hand, the film wanted to portray the power of faith in the most adverse circumstances for the protagonist. The second goal was to honor our vets for their service and their sacrifice. On both counts, the film succeeded.

The focus of the narrative was on a grieving widow, Amber Hill, whose husband died in Afghanistan in 2014. Amber feels betrayed by God and stops attending the local church in Berlin, Kentucky. She keeps descending lower and lower into her emotional pain, until she nearly loses the most precious object in her life, the love of her daughter.

On the one hand, it is easy to empathize with Amber, due to her tragic loss. On the other hand, she is slow to recognize the degree to which she is surrounded by a supportive group of friends and loved ones. The most intriguing relationship developed in the film was not the romantic connection between Amber and a racecar driver, Cody Jackson. Rather, the surprising relationship was that of Amber and her mother-in-law Patti.

Far from being a one-dimensional, shrewish mother-in-law, Patti was deeply concerned about Amber and her daughter Bree. It was surprising that Amber would not communicate with Patti, who was clearly reaching out to her. At one point, Patty offered Amber a job in sales. But Amber was so stubborn that she continued to work for tips at the local diner, lose her home, and become estranged from her daughter, due to the financial strain.

One of the religious themes presented by the filmmakers was that "nothing is impossible." But Amber was trying her best to make life impossible for herself and everyone around her!

It was clear that one of the motifs of the film was resilience in the face of adversity. That was apparent in the case of the vet whose life was saved by Amber's husband and he later regained enough strength to walk after a serious war wound. The racecar driver is also resilient after multiple pileups on the track. The only character who is far too slow in picking herself up and moving on with her life is Amber Hill.

There is a recurring image in the film of Amber's daughter nurturing a mustard seed along to develop into a healthy plant and ultimately an enormous tree. This image comes from the famous Lorraine Hansberry play "A Raisin in the Sun." The hardy growth demonstrates the perseverance of a family of survivors in the Younger family. In "God Bless the Broken Road," Amber hits rock bottom, prior to having her faith restored. But she never should have descended to the lower depths, based on the friendship, love, and support that surrounded her from the beginning.

A faith-based movie arrives this weekend and it is worth seeing ...
floydj8 September 2018
I was privileged to be given access to a streamed copy of this new picture due to be released tomorrow. The film focuses on a mother and daughter whose husband and father were killed in Afghanistan in 2014 - a loss which neither have dealt with as they try to continue a normal life.

But life does go on - people enter our lives, circumstances overwhelm us, and life feels like it is crashing in on us. But even in the midst of crisis God continues to offer His love - we may not see it, may even run from it, He offers His love if we will listen.

Finding God's grace in the midst of a busy life is sometimes difficult. There may be pain, waiting maybe hard, and finding Him will often require tears. Such is the case for Amber and Bree as they find God's grace in the middle life's difficulties.

If you do not yet have a movie in your sights for this week, let me suggest that you consider seeing God Bless The Broken Road. It will be worth your time. _____________ This review is based on a free screening provided by the publisher for the purpose of creating this review. The opinions are mine alone.

An inspiring and heart breaking story
pwhannum9 September 2018
Warning: Spoilers
Death of a husband who sacrificed his life for his country. This film shows us a true depiction of what could happen to the family left behind after such a terrible tragedy. I was very pleased with the message this film gave to the audience. Until she gave her heart back to God, she was not able to find the peace she was so desperately researching for. It was a simple message that shows the true love of God, family, and good friends. I was so excited when I heard it was coming to the big screen. We need more Christian movies that not only relate to our everyday problems but shows us the Love of God in simple ways. This movie probably would not appeal to younger children, but for ages 10 and up, a great choice. Make sure you bring tissues!

Moving and Beautiful... with a few corny scenes
dantharpe14 September 2018
Now... this is a movie you can take the whole family too. I can't recall hearing any bad language, there was nothing you would have to cover your kids ears and eyes in any scene... and it had a good message. In a time where God, prayer, and the American flag are criticized, put down, and maligned, everyone needs to see this movie. The actors in this movie I don't believe I've ever seen before, but their performances were outstanding... a very good movie. I wish Hollywood had the decency to do more...

Excellent family movie
rmbldr-557469 September 2018
Warning: Spoilers
This movie is an excellent depiction of human emotions and the mistakes we all make. A Mother agonizes over how to take care of her daughter after her husband is killed in action in Afghanistan. Her faith is shaken, but her daughter still believes and tries to bring her back to believing. Several things happen all at one time, until in desperation, she cries out to God for help. This is a "MUST SEE".

Inspirational story of life and faith.
KevTheMovieReviewer21 December 2018
I went into this thinking it would be a religious only film which it was in some way. The film combined country music, car racing and faith while staying respectful to the people who serve in the military. The struggles we see are real and Pulsipher played a very convincing role. She showed lots of emotion throughout and I felt so bad for her.

Many people lose their faith when a loved one dies and do blame God for it. The climax was very emotional when she realized the reason he was taken and her emotions went all over the place as she spoke to God. It is something we will all go through at some point and it's a process we must all grapple with. There is no right or wrong way.

This film shows that no matter how bad it gets there is always a light at the end of the tunnel. It shows the support the family, friends and the town gives, it shows that we all have support. It was a good, emotion watch and I am happy that I did see it. I will likely not watch it twice but that does not diminish the fact that this was a great, emotional film.
