Happy endings are for films. THIS is what actually happens in real.
Nebzyl25 May 2016
The final sequence without any dialogue kept me speechless. The credits started to roll and I was there sitting totally heart-broken. It kept me thinking. Is our life as meaningless as of him? I wonder how people would react to this.

The sheer beauty of this film is, it portrays the reality of our life. A person need not have a very great aim but a simple one is enough to keep their life moving. Having someone to call a family, a friend to spend time with, a person to fall in love and a general vision of what to do with life, are some simple things that motivate us to keep going.

Pashupati Prasad never accepted defeat. He considered his family family although he got cheated. He loved a mother as a son although he was not born to her. However betrayed and helpless he felt, he did not back away. He may not be satisfied with his life but he was living it. Simple thing it may be, but the movie shows this thing very beautifully and made us connected to the character.

However, tragedy is always lurking around the corner ready to make use of any chance it gets. Things are left incomplete. Life ends meaningless. This is reality. The sooner we realize this, the better person we may become. The film portrays these things very well setting an example of Pashupatinath area, symbolizing 'all men must die'.

"Pashupati Prasad" can be considered one of the best movies in the history of Nepali cinema. My rating - 8/10

A Brilliant and Touching Nepali Movie....
SumanShakya27 October 2016
Pashupati Area, the most important pilgrimage center of Nepal, has the biggest cremation ground, the so called "ghats" which are the main means of livelihood for many people who dream of making a living in the city. It concerns few characters whose lives revolve around the holy area. It escapes from the dream world and projects the real aspirations, hardship, agony of common people whose lives are hard than they appear. The major specialty of the film is the connectivity it establishes with the audiences yet remaining entertaining which has been seldom seen in a Nepali movie.

Instead of presenting the holiness of the Pashupati Area, the film exposes the ugly side. Even the cremation becomes a mean of livelihood for few people like burning the corpses, collecting the coins, belongings, ornaments of the dead, unburnt firewood. There are even brawls and thefts in such activities. Besides, the film depicts the livelihoods made by the people through informal sectors like food stalls, selling cloths, amusing others through props like Hanuman Ji of the film. All these revolve around the protagonist, Pashupati Prashad, hailing from Sindupalchowk, who has come to the capital to make a living and pay the debt of his parents who have tragically perished in the great earthquake of 2015. Other characters include his Mitba, who makes a living cremating the dead, his friend Hanumanji making a living through his get up for selfies of the visitors in Pashupati, a friend who sells snacks in a kiosk, a granny living in the old age home of Pashupati area, few thugs, and his love,a mute girl. All the characters though have a separate world and ways, all dream of a decent living and intersect by the end, which leaves the audiences agape; and perhaps that's sad but the truth, which are seldom encountered in the movies.

Although the film drops into certain cheapness through the thugs shown in the movie or the just the superficial background the film touches on the characters, the film sweeps along well. The metaphorical representation it makes through Hanumanji is commendable. The acting and direction are brilliant, which grip you to the end. Overall, to encounter the realities of people around you, do watch this well made and touching movie.

Bittersweet - "Pashupati Prasad" ! A Must Watch. Content and very endearing.
acresta-3438810 May 2016
Warning: Spoilers
Pashupati Prasad is one very content, very entertaining, touching and thoughtful film; one of the best to come out this year.

The movie shows the journey of Pashupati Prasad after he comes to Kathmandu to earn money so as to clear his late parents' debts and dispose of their ashes. The journey is of course, not easy and the bad luck follows him around.

The story is right on track with the main target of earning money being set and all the other incidents that happen tied to the main point. Plots, with the comical touch, help the entertainment factor. The continuity and the synchronization of plots make the movie flow linearly and smoothly, generating the momentum gradually and maintaining the pace.

Director Dpendra K. Khanal has done a brilliant job of wonderfully executing the impressive story by Khagendra Lamichhane. His writing is very good, especially the warmth and the reality of the story and the instantly relatable and likable characters. Dpendra K. Khanal, as he had said in the recent interview, has really improved a lot since his last outing Jholay.

The Characters in the extraordinary tale of a common man!!

The main character Pashupati is willing to do any sort of work to earn money but not the ones that are morally wrong; he spells goodness through his kindness and innocence regardless of hard times he is facing. A father figure, working as a cremator, talks high of reality and morality but does opposite; and still his character does not become hateful due to his good deeds. There is a character, which tries to be the don but is struggling to survive too. A person dressing up as a Hanuman, who becomes the helping friend of Pashupati Prasad, has his own issues from the past that shortly tends to show the quite problematic face of modern city.

An old mother, abandoned by her own son, gets love from Pashupati instead. While her son visits her with a suitcase, full of goods for her and tries to persuade her to sell the home so that he can clear his debts, Pashupati visits her with the samosa that she loves and the medicine that he bought for her. A young man selling the momo even though he has degree with major on English. A college girl growing likes for Pashupati; this one can be quite unreal but the way it is shown in the movie is enjoyable and not so question-able. The hero and heroine do not sing a song and dance here, instead they love each other with eye-talks.

This diverse, real-looking and strong characterization highly compliments the content that is strong with the story putting the light on the bitter reality of the society. All these characters portray the bittersweet facets of the life for survival.

The movie stands high on moral ground but without being forceful.

I found the ending quite good too. The five-minutes-plus ending sequence without a dialogue actually sums up the core message of the movie.

Now, there are some things that can be termed drawbacks. The past of Hanuman should have been displayed properly for its own good; that could have made the character stronger. It is never shown in the movie that why the Bhasme don gets afraid of Hanuman. The tension that arises later between Pashupati and his mit-ba could have been developed more strongly.

But these things disappear from mind when the movie is hitting right at your heart with its sentiments.

Dialogues are top-notch. Some of them hits hard and packs the punch, hence the whistles and the claps. Cinematography is good. Background score is okay. Costumes are taken good care of.

Performances!

Performances are way too good. Khagendra Lamichhane as Pashupati Prasad shines bright again. He has talent written all over. He fits perfectly in the role, showing very good command on village accent, body language, and dialogue delivery. He looks natural. Excellent job by Bipin Karki as Bhasme don. He is such a versatile actor. He is completely different in this avatar; his best performance to date. Prakash Ghimire as mit-ba is very good, so is Mishri Thapa as old abandoned mother. Rabindra Singh Baniya as Hanuman has a mask on face until the end but is nice. Barsha Shiwakoti is good in her character even though she has little screen presence and no dialogues. Other supporting actors are okay.

Final Say:

Pashupati Prasad is a very endearing movie, rich in content and performance; it entertains, touches the heart and even tickles mind and provokes some thoughts. This is the movie not to be missed.

THE BIGGEST WEAKNESS OF A MAN: GREED AND COWARDNESS!
paagaming21 July 2023
Warning: Spoilers
Absolutely beautiful movie with great messaging. Definitely the best Nepali movie I have seen!! The only problem I have with this movie is that it just doesn't make sense that people would just not only kill a man but chase him before that because they heard someone screaming, "Thief, Theif." From a logical and immersion point of view, just doesn't make sense. But even while saying that, from a thematic point of view or messaging point of view, it makes sense and the ending does justice to the movie.

The main theme of the movie is obviously greed. This movie tells you that there is no short cut to life and hardwork and patience is the only way to move forward. If you search for shortcuts and greed, it will just end up with you destroying everything like how Pashupati destroys and ends not just his life but all his relationships.

And the other theme I found in the story is the cowardness of man. This movie tells you to live a life without lie whether that lie be towards others or to yourself. The main examples of this is Hanuman Ji's character to portrays the role of a brave and courageous god but is a coward and liar behind the mask. Another example is Pashupati's sworn father who wears black glasses and makes himself look like rich but in reality is poor. He also lies about not recognising Pashupati the first time they meet in the movie. But Pashupati isn't like that he is a Idealistic man who wants to pay off his parents' debt no matter what. And even though he dies, he changes both of them and turns both of them into idealistic and courageous men who don't hide behind a mask and lie to not just others but themselves.........

The best nepali movie I have ever watched in terms of cinematography, storyline and acting. The characters and the flow of the movie is mind blowing. This is not like those commercial movies where the end is a happy one, this movie shows the reality of life.
