George C. Wolfe is one of the great storytellers of the stage and screen, which is why it was only fitting that the writer and director of theatrical and film productions was at last month’s Scad Savannah Film Festival to collect its Storyteller Award. Following a screening of his latest motion picture, Rustin — which tells the story of Bayard Rustin, the gay civil rights activist who organized the 1963 March on Washington, and is now streaming on Netflix — Wolfe joined yours truly in the Lucas Theatre to record an episode of The Hollywood Reporter’s Awards Chatter podcast.
Wolfe, 69, is known as a playwright for writing 1986’s The Colored Museum and co-writing 1992’s Jelly’s Last Jam. He also gained recognition as a theater director for the original Broadway productions of Angels in America: Millennium Approaches and Angels in America: Perestroika and a host of Broadway musicals, like 1996’s Bring in ’da Noise,...

Roland A. Pattillo, the gynecologic oncologist who played a pivotal role in bringing the case of Henrietta Lacks to public awareness and was played by Ruben Santiago-Hudson in the 2017 HBO movie The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks, died of Parkinson’s disease on May 3 at his home outside Atlanta. He was 89.
His death went largely unreported until recent articles in The Nation and The New York Times.
Although the so-called “HeLa” cell line had been used since the 1950s for scientific research that helped develop the polio vaccine, HIV treatments and many other medical advances, the human source of the cell line – Henrietta Lacks, a 31-year-old Black woman who died of cervical cancer in 1951 – was largely unknown outside the medical community. In the 1990s, Pattillo made it his mission to celebrate Lacks and her immense contribution to medical research.

Exclusive: Filmmaker George C. Wolfe was not interested in doing what he termed “icon crap” in his movie Rustin, about the multi-layered life of Bayard Rustin, regarded as one of the most influential organizers of the Civil Rights Movement and the architect of the March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom, which took place 60 years ago this week.
“You have to have an extraordinary degree of irreverence and approach it like, ‘This is a human being.’ Because if you’re doing icon crap, it is very easy for you to fall into boring or reverential, and we have statues for that,” said Wolfe of his film that stars Colman Domingo as the man who often was at Dr. Martin Luther King’s side.
Many have opined that Rustin has been neglected by history.

“Everybody needs a Wally!” exclaims actor Peter Macdissi. He is referring to his loveable character in the Amazon film “Uncle Frank.” Wally is the longtime partner of the titular Frank (Paul Bettany). The pair end up journeying from New York City to Frank’s hometown in the south, to a conservative family that doesn’t know of the pair’s relationship. Nevertheless, Wally is a source of positivity and exuberance who lifts up the traumatized people around him. Macdissi believes that the Wallys of the world are necessary “to make life more palatable” and find the positives in every situation. “I’ve learned from Wally,” admits the actor, “to appreciate the little things.” Watch the exclusive video interview above.
“Uncle Frank” is written and directed by Oscar and Emmy winner Alan Ball, Macdissi’s real life partner. “I just cried my eyes out,” says Macdissi of the first time he read the script.

Tian Richards (Dumplin’) has been tapped for the role of Tom Swift in an upcoming episode of the CW drama Nancy Drew, which will serve as a backdoor pilot for a potential spinoff series, now in development at the network.
If Tom Swift goes to series, Richards will continue in the title role.
In the planted-spinoff episode of Nancy Drew, Tom Swift will crash into one of Nancy Drew’s (Kennedy McMann) investigations, an event that Nancy interprets as supernatural and Tom believes to be cosmically paranormal. (This is not a traditional backdoor pilot/planted spinoff as Tom Swift is developing a regular pilot script in addition to the title character appearing on Nancy Drew.)
Tom Swift, from Nancy Drew co-creators/executive producers Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage, their Fake Empire banner and CBS Studios, is considered one of the CW’s strongest early contenders for next season.

The film debuts on Netflix today - and this final trailer is in memory of the talented Chadwick Boseman, who passed away this year. It's his final film and final performance. Producer Lydia Dean Pilcher, after decades of collaborating with filmmakers like Katheryn Bigelow, Wes Anderson and Gina Prince Bythewood, is stepping behind the camera for the first time as a feature director. Her directorial debut, the historical drama “Radium Girls,” is opening in theaters and on demand on Friday.
The movie, set in New Jersey in the late ’20s, follows two teenage sisters (portrayed by Joey King and Abby Quinn) employed at a nearby American Radium plant. Those working on the assembly line to paint dials were instructed to lick the tip of their paintbrushes to increase their precision, ingesting lethal amounts of radium (an element they were told wasn’t harmful) in the process. But after the self-luminous paint began to poison factory workers the young activists attempt to expose the corporate scandal. "Every colored man in the world got to do his part!" "And tell the white man just what he can do." Netflix has revealed the first official trailer for Ma Rainey's Black Bottom, a 1920s blues movie from filmmaker George C. Wolfe. This is also the very last film starring Chadwick Boseman, who passed away this year. Tensions rise when the trailblazing Mother of the Blues and her band gather at a Chicago recording studio in 1927. Adapted from August Wilson's play of the same name. Viola Davis stars as "Mama Blues", also known as Ma Rainey, and Boseman co-stars as her ambitious horn player Levee. The excellent cast also includes Colman Domingo, Michael Potts, Glynn Turman, Dusan Brown, and Taylour Paige. This looks tremendous, not only with tons of exceptional music but also a handful of superb performances that will make this a lively, exciting film to enjoy this fall.

Viola Davis plays the “Mother of the Blues” in “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom,” a jazzy, soulful and musical drama in which she and Chadwick Boseman together tackle race, art, religion and a white-dominated recording industry.
The first trailer for the film shows the lush period setting of 1920s Chicago, where Ma Rainey’s band gathers together to record a new album of her songs, only for them to tell stories, joke around, philosophize and argue about the world and the career they’ve chosen. Before long, though, tensions begin to boil between Ma Rainey, her white agent and her producer and the rest of her bandmates.
“This be an empty world without blues. I try and take that emptiness and fill it up with soul. But they want to call me ‘Mother of Blues,’ that’s alright with me, it don’t hurt none,” Davis says in the trailer.

Chadwick Boseman may have left the realm of the living far too early at the age of 43, but the Black Panther star’s legacy will be further cemented with the release of his starring role in Netflix film Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom, which will stand as his final onscreen performance.
Netflix has released the first images previewing Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom, a historical drama set in 1927 Chicago, in which Viola Davis co-stars as the eponymous Ma Rainey, a popular Southern singer dubbed the “Mother of Blues,” who’s come to the Second City for a crucial recording session; an endeavor complicated by her ambitious, machinations-making trumpeter, Levee (Boseman), and clashes with her manager—and other elements of the white-dominated music industry—over the creative direction of the music. The images can be seen just below.

Netflix has ordered a drama series based on the award-winning Chinese book series “The Three-Body Problem” with David Benioff, D.B. Weiss, and Alexander Woo set to write and executive produce.
The series order covers all three books in the trilogy — “The Three-Body Problem,” “The Dark Forest,” and “Death’s End,” all of which were written by Liu Cixin. They tell the story of humanity’s first contact with an alien civilization. Netflix struck a deal with The Three-Body Universe and Yoozoo Group for the rights to produce an English-language adaptation of the books.
“Liu Cixin’s trilogy is the most ambitious science-fiction series we’ve read, taking readers on a journey from the 1960s until the end of time, from life on our pale blue dot to the distant fringes of the universe,” Benioff and Weiss said. “We look forward to spending the next years of our lives bringing this...

In what has been a growing trend in recent years at the Emmys, this year’s crop of TV movies under-performed in the nominations. I thought films like “Bad Education” and “El Camino: A Breaking Bad Movie” would have done a lot better than they did given their strong reviews and the high-profile talent attached. This is especially ironic during an era when streaming movies are getting more and more popular at the Oscars. So what gives?
SEE2020 Emmy nominations complete list: All the nominees for the 72nd Emmy Awards
“Bad Education” earned only two Emmy noms: Best TV Movie and Best Movie/Limited Actor (Hugh Jackman); Emmy darling Allison Janney didn’t even earn a nomination for her supporting performance as a corrupt school official. “El Camino” did a little better with five nominations including Best TV Movie, but none of its actors made the cut, not even Aaron Paul,...

In honor of Juneteenth, we’ve gathered a list of special programming across several networks to commemorate the holiday that celebrates the day in 1865 when Union soldiers, led by Major General Gordon Granger, landed at Galveston, Texas, and delivered the news that all enslaved people were free. Juneteenth is still not recognized as a federal holiday, but it is recognized by several states — and this year, many companies are declaring it a paid holiday in light of the Black Lives Matter movement and national protesting that has taken place following the death of George Floyd.
This special programming celebrates black history and educates viewers on the history of the black experience in the United States.

It’s rare that the film you least expected to ends up consuming prime real estate in your mind as much as writer-director Trey Edward Shults’ “Waves” has. This quiet festival darling in the guise of a humdrum family drama boasts a top-notch cast — including Renee Elise Goldsberry (“The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks”), Sterling K. Brown, and Kelvin Harrison, Jr. — and tension as tight as a rubber band.

He parties, does some drugs — but apparently not enough to throw him off his wrestling game, God forbid. And like many young men,...
