Long, but great story!

This 51-episode historical drama had true-to-life implications in the final years of Queen Munjeong until her death. Her son, King Myungjong, was literally put on the throne by the Queen via evil ways. The writers did a marvelous job connecting the Queen with a story of a young girl who was born in the prison from a mysterious lady (seen evading soldiers in the beginning of the drama). The series was very well-written and I was hooked from day one! There were many tears shed by me and a bit of laughter here and there, as saeguks are famous for. But, what was missing was a love story. The FL (strong actress Jin Se Yeon) was fantastic in all aspects and her fight scenes were very believable. The ML (handsome actor Go Soo) was seen as a grump, with those precious few smiles, but his attraction to the FL went nowhere. A few hugs here and there...but nothing. I think he was wasted as a love interest. The best character for me was King Myungjong (gorgeous supporting actor Seo Ha Joon) whose fondness for the FL (Seo Won) was so sweet and innocent, I swear he was in love! SHJ portrayed the King so well and was so sincere in his acting, his scenes made me cry a lot and I would fast-forward many idiotic scenes to get to his. The final moment when he realized a romantic relationship with Seo Won was impossible was the climactic moment of true love. Why didn't the writers care about the relationship with the ML? Not one kiss, but ONE tender moment in 51 hours! Veteran actress Kim Mi Sook as the Queen was excellent! The veteran actors and supporting cast were equally fantastic, especially the evil couple (Jung Joon Ho and an over-acting Park Joo Mi) who made everyone's lives miserable. I adored comedian Jung Eun Pyo as the ever-lovable foster father. Bravo to all!!

Most annoying characters: comedian Shorry J's as the pickpocket Chun Doong; actress Lee Do Eun as sex-crazed servant Geum; and actor Park Kim Soo as the most creepy character in the prison, Administrator Jong Hwe. My fast-forward button helped a lot in avoiding their scenes!

The fight scenes were wonderfully choreographed. The music was perfect for the time period. Costumes were ok, but repetitive. Overall, compelling but over-long. Aside from a tepid, but good ending, it's a must-watch!!

It's safe to say I hit a wall around episode 9-10 of that drama. Everything felt like a lullaby-monotone and sleep-inducing. Later on, things didn't improve much, but I guess I sort of got used to the dreariness. However, that last episode was a total distaste. It crammed in so much last-minute chaos and then ended with an unsatisfying departure that seemed like an afterthought. There were two things I hated in particular about this drama that were too glaring to ignore and subsequently detracted a lot from the drama, not that it was gonna be something spectacular without them anyway. The gags/comedic-relief moments accompanied by the unpleasant comedy cue made going through the episodes just a tad bit tougher than it already was. The other reason was Sung Ji Hun in general, the man sucks on a cosmic level, both the character and the actor. It would have been infinitely better to completely strip the drama from this deplorable attempted romance. Any love triangle that involves Choi Tae Joon is usually an unquestionable bad time right out of the gate.
