Really think people are exaggerating the flaws here.
WhoTendsTheFire2 March 2021
Warning: Spoilers
Objectively, this is not any better or worse than the average episode from this season. Like with the episode where Charlie died, people have again jumped to attack it, pointing out supposed "flaws" that wouldn't have bothered them if they showed up in any other episode. I've seen reviews complaining about things like "why would Jody know who Eileen was?" or "why do Sam and Dean would have snail mail?" Those arguments don't make a lick of sense.

Let's look at those two arguments. The first one... just because we don't see characters going to the bathroom, it doesn't mean they don't poop. Jody was already shown to be in contact with other hunters before, and it's possible she or some other hunter she knew could have known about her. No suspension of disbelief even required. The second one... again we have no idea about every aspect of the boys' lives. They may have always been using snail-mail, and there's no reason they couldn't have provided Eileen with the address.

Honestly, if these are the things that bother you, then you shouldn't be watching a show where thousands of monsters supposedly exist in the street, and no one is aware of it even in the information age, or where people can just walk into crime scenes pretending to be the FBI, using the names of classic rock musician.

Not great, but not as awful as everyone says
katrinebirk15 May 2017
Warning: Spoilers
There are plenty of things wrong with this episode and most of them have been pointed out by other reviews.

In my opinion, there are 3 major faults to this episode:

1) Eileen's death: The biggest problem with this isn't the fact that her death was unnecessary. The problem is the way they did it. It was worse than the way they killed of Charlie. Eileen got 3 minutes in the beginning of the episode; no build up, a VERY small fight, and they barely talked about it after that. It made her seem insignificant and defenseless. That hell hound took her down like it was nothing. It's like they forgot that she's been hunting all her life and that she can defend herself. (On a side note, they also only mentioned Mick's death, and it basically got no reaction from Sam and Dean)

2) Crowley's "death": I feel this one is an insult to both the character's AND the viewers' intelligence. Crowley is one of the smartest characters on the show and not only his "death" but also the whole "Revenge on Lucifer" arc is so out of character for him. Now, if they really HAD to do this, had to "kill" him off, at least give the viewers some doubt that he really died. It felt like they thought that showing the rat next to Crowley was a subtle move and that viewers were too stupid to connect the dots.

This could have been a great way of getting viewers. If they had let us believe that Crowley was actually dead, this episode could have been both emotional and it could have stood out.

3) BMoL: Again, they were COMPLETELY out of character. We have seen the BMoL kill many times, we have seen them "doing business" many times. Every time, it has been done quick and clean. BUT instead of just shooting Sam and Dean in the head like they usually do, they thought "hey, let's give the guys who beat fri***ng Lucifer a chance to escape with their lives"!

As Crowley said in season 7 (?): "Don't worry about -- what, like Lucifer didn't worry? Or Michael? Or Lilith or Alastair or Azazel didn't worry?! Am I the only game piece on the board who doesn't underestimate those denim-wrapped nightmares?!"

But, I think giving this episode one star is pretty... harsh. This episode is not the worst episode of SPN. The two lowest rated episodes of SPN (besides this one) is Bugs and Bloodlines, both of which are much worse than this one. Bugs has a rating of around 7, so I'll give this one the same.

A thing I actually liked about this episode was Samantha Smith's acting and Mary's breakdown. It was very emotional to see that the worst thing she could imagine was happening to her. I also liked the Crowley-knows-Dr. Hess-thing.

All in all; an action-filled episode with emotional moments - and no regard for canon or the characters

Not bad, another setup for the season finale
Kingslaay12 May 2017
Not a bad episode, I was hoping for more. The last two episodes were superior in quality. This was more a setup episode to pave the way for a big season finale. We saw the Winchesters face off against the Men of Letters who sadly are resourceful and have the manpower. The British Men of Letters clearly showed us how the fine line between them and the evil they hunt is blurred. Crowley and them seem to have an arrangement for them to coexist. Not a lot happened that couldn't be conveyed in the first half. It was sad to see Mary in such a vulnerable state and a slave to the Men of Letters. Meanwhile Lucifer has broken off his lock and killed Crowley's vessel to take control of Hell once again.

One criticism I have is they need to solidify the lines between Crowley or Hell and the Winchesters. Lucifer said it perfectly when he said Crowley was cozy with them and the show needs a strong antagonist like they had in earlier seasons. Remember when Sam and Dean had difficulty with both Heaven and Hell during the apocalypse season? This uncertainty on all sides makes for great viewing.

Having said that this was still a decent episode on its own even if it was a setup episode. The show was building up in the last two episodes so this filler episode acted to spoil the shows momentum. We wanted to see more intense episodes that would explode in the season finale and we so that was the issue with this episode. I am surprised by the ratings this episode has received, at one point it had strong ratings and then had a huge drop. Over 200 people at this point have given it a 1 which shows maybe this episode polarized people but one can never tell. I hope the viewership is aware that Crowley is not dead, it was clear his soul is in a rat and he will return most likely to his original vessel. Lucifer is also back in action so the Winchesters have their hands full so things are not all bad and still shaping up to be interesting.

Warning: Spoilers
Why are people getting so mad at Eileen's death? The men of letters said that they want to kill every hunter in America and since they work by such a crazy inhumane strict code(i don't like them either) Eileen has a death mark put on her the moment she killed one of the men of letters, there was no way she would be allowed to live. Just who are the crazy fans who claim that her death was unnecessary and served no purpose its the exact punishment the men of letters claimed on her and the people who rate this as one of the worst episodes in this show are clearly delusional and overly sensitive(she appeared in 3 episodes come on).Of course there are other things that could have been done a lot better in this episode but over 95% of the reviews that give a bad rating here are taking this "pointless" Eileen death as the pillar of their review, that is just pure non-sense and they have just clearly understood the men of letters code and principles all wrong.

That bad, really?
albator-115 May 2017
This episode was light years away from a bad episode and I'm not exactly sure why people all of a sudden didn't like it. It was the same good/great quality as always. My guess is a well-organized blitz vote by angry trolls against the show or maybe very few or even just one or 2 individuals with many, many accounts. Or/and maybe several fed-up fans of supernatural that decided to lash out against the show at the same time.

Supernatural is dying away? ROFL, 99% of the TV shows don't even reach season 10, and here it is in season 12 (and 13th confirmed) with all the episodes (except that one) in the 8 or 9 ranges. What a dying and amazingly bad show...

The fans hate this episode???
This wasn't a bad episode, it wasn't great but it definitely not the car crash everyone is making it out to be.

To all the Supernatural fans reading this and out there This is the episode you hate???

Where you for the last seasons finale? Season 11 Finale? That was the worst finale and episode in the history of the show. It was having the cast all gather around like Castiel and Crowley and then Amara and God are like we're all friends now, its OK and that's it. They hold hands and go away and that's the big conclusion to the season ha ha. No cliffhanger except for Mary unnecessarily showing up in that same white dress.

What is wrong with you people? I am so confused, you preferred that joke of an episode over this action paced one?

Not a great episode, And also not an awful one!
alirezamatrian12 May 2017
Warning: Spoilers
before anything, let us see what was this season in comparison to the past seasons : a boring season with less supernatural beings and more filler episodes. So, this episode was what i like about this series!

Sure i loved Eileen! just like all other fans and viewers!! but isn't she a recurring character with just two episodes in series!?

this episode was an action packed supernatural style story plus the return of Lucifer for an epic finale for a boring season!

Top 20 Reasons this episode failed while delivering backhands to the fandom:
WednesdaySPN16 May 2017
Warning: Spoilers
1. Eileen UN-necessary death! Another fridging of a female character?

Would it have been so terrible to have a Eileen return once a year for the fans who loved her? Representation for the hearing impaired matters. Representation Matters 2. The B.M.O.L. and Crowley are working together. Since when? Why were there no clues? Hindsight usually affords a few, "Oh that's what such and such meant." "Oh I should've guessed that!" But, no, this is completely out of insane field.

3. You can control a hell hound with a dog whistle?

4. All the yucky dog references AGAIN. Good dog. Bad Dog. Crowley cuddling with the hell hounds.

Ewww.

5. That horrid cringy scene of Crowley being a puppet. (Well, at least no one had to lick the floor again.)

6. Crowley smokes into the Rat without smoke? Lucifer does not notice that the body didn't light up? Crowley is as dumb as a rat? Since when? The rat? the hamster? Another Olivette thingy that the fandom & cast laughed over how awful it was, yet, it returneth… please. So bad and so not funny! It's like a deliberate backhand to the fans who previously resented and mocked that stupid Olivette scene.

7. Why did Eileen come back to the States?

Wouldn't it have been easier for the B.M.O.L. to kill her in Ireland? ( Oh, but then Sam and Dean wouldn't be able to look at her corpse thereby cementing the fact that Eileen is dead, without possible resurrection by other writers.)

8. Why would Sam and Dean even think of getting snail mail? They have a mailbox? Since when and why? Why would they have given Eileen their snail mail address?

9. The Amazing miracle to unleash Lucifer AGAIN! "The device, it's cemented directly into your DNA and that of the King's. As it's powering down in you, the polarity is somehow reversing. .. The ability to control is transferring from Crowley to you."

10. "Oh, that OEDIPAL MYOPIA again." Exactly my complaint for two seasons!!

11. "Kelly's now in the clutches of the WINCHESTERS' LOVE SLAVE, Castiel, who's no doubt dragging her to a gruesome death." Baiting!

12. "Toni: That you invited Azazel to visit when he spared John's life. . . I have sources, Mary. Everywhere." Ah, that explains it then. ????

13. Strangely cut off scene: "Hess: Your relationship with the Winchesters. It's a bit cozy for my taste. I hope you don't expect me to spare your friends……."

14. Sam: "'but I could bunk with you guys for a few days until I sort this out' "You think the Brits were watching her? If Eileen says they were -- Then maybe they're the ones that killed her." Note there are NO WORDS for Sam to express his grief, just a HUGE VOID OF TIME.

(Wherein they search the bunker for the bug. Where is it? Where could it be? Is it here? Is it under there? WHY the long search? Because there are NO WORDS of dialogue until, "Those Hunters you were talking to, is one of them Terry Marsh? Yeah, Terry Marsh in Missouri.") Thank goodness, Sam visually demonstrated his grief. Thank goodness, Dean entertained us with his fridge leftovers. Thank goodness, for a director who made it look 10x better than it was.

15. Mary was completely brainwashed and turned into a killing puppet for the BMOL in under a week? Why didn't they just reprogram Mick then? Surely, all of his knowledge was an asset to them. Oh right, the same writers who killed him, killed Eileen 12.21 and Metatron 11.21 and Charlie 10.21 Doesn't have to make sense… gratuitous killing used to make their scripts memorable for something other than just being plain craptastic. Ye Old cheesy formula that deliberately pisses off the fans

16. The Bunker? Knowing the BMOL were after them, wouldn't they have entered a little more cautiously, or better yet hidden out in a motel, or better yet take the fight to the BMOL? Witness the great Dumbing Down of Sam and Dean.

17. The "I could shoot you now, but I'd rather do the James Bond villain thing. You'll live 2 or 3 days…"

Srsly? How is this good writing?

18. How did Jody know about Eileen? Curious.

19. The opening and closing SFX and CGI: awful just awful. OK we are spoiled, but that was bad.

20. Mary is brainwashed and wiped clean (Lisa) in 3 days. A strong woman made to beg on her knees in front of her ex sexual partner? Eww.

Positives

A director who fleshed out all the action and silent moments with a great entrapment scene and a gunfight. The cast who added emotions to a flat script. The unified outraged reaction of the majority of the fandom.

"Friggin' people!"
rjg-3135612 May 2017
Warning: Spoilers
As Dean has always said, "Friggin' people!" I didn't like this episode because with the emphasis on deranged people it became just like any other drama. It wasn't fair they way they just killed off Eileen. Hopefully, she went to Heaven and might come back, or since she was killed by a Hell Hound, does that mean she's in Hell? She certainly didn't deserve that! The writers also neutered Crowley – AGAIN! – that plot device has been done to death, and you just know he's in that rat. Lucifer also is not as wily as he usually is. The way he turns the tables on Crowley stretched the imagination – totally unrealistic – no explanation is given, it just happens out of the blue. If this episode was supposed to have been about Mary, then the writers should have focused more on her instead of just giving her one big scene, which was VERY good. I HATE THE BMOL and will be ecstatic when they are gone. One thing I am looking forward to is how the writers will handle the nephilim. Will it be Season 13's big bad?

So far the worst episode I seen.
rashadwilkins-2151413 May 2017
Warning: Spoilers
As time goes on, more and more supernatural episodes are created. Some are good and some are due for The Empty. This episode and Season 6+ are due for it. But, I am only reviewing for this episode. Okay it starts off with Eileen a fan favorite from a long time ago being killed and thrown around by hellhound. That was absolutely disgusting and a insult to the fans. They have Mary brainwashed in 3 days, Mary hesitates at killing Ketch? Come on who wouldn't kill the person who trapped her. Sam and Dean are the only ones in character.

Lucifer's escape was flawed. He was trapped for about a few episodes and was able to control Crowley to his actions. One question for Lucifer, where did he get the angel blade and how did Crowley not watch the archangel if anything backfired could killed him with a snap of his fingers. Why are Sam and Dean dumbed down? They keep trying to talk when they should be stabbing. Castiel keeps his character but, one question? Why did angels capture Kelly when they were trying to kill her from the start? Whoever wrote this should be fired.

A Terrible Episode from a Great Show
descendingintohell12 May 2017
Warning: Spoilers
Easily the worst episode on the show and utterly disappointing. One would think the terrible duo would know better than to pull this kind of stunt after the outrage from Charlie's death two years ago in season ten. Eileen was a fan favorite minority character, and her death was upsetting, unnecessary, undignified, and uncalled for. Crowley's death was also upsetting, considering how intelligent and capable his character is. Toni's info-dumping was confusing and off putting. Why would you share this information with anyone? I honestly do not care for her, and any sympathy I had for Mary has disappeared. A terrible episode.

And that's it ,folks....
migdallt-3700812 May 2017
Warning: Spoilers
"Death is the poor man's doctor, and the bad writer's plot twist."

As I write this review, I wonder why I even bother. Even bad press is good press for a show like Supernatural, because it keeps it in the public discussion, where it clearly shouldn't be.

Let me re-phrase that.

Bucklemming.

They should not be in the public discussion.

They are beyond poor writers. And if that sounds like a lame and uninspired insult,it's because honestly, taking the effort to come up with something worthy of Bucklemming takes more effort than they deserve, like, say:

"That's not writing, that's typing."(Capote)

-or-

"Written so lazily and with so little care, that if this story was their child, DFACS would have taken it away from them years ago - and moved them to a safer, more stimulating place - like a burned down crack house." (me)

OK, I guess I had the energy after all.

Energy born of fury and rage and utter frustration at the mountain of flaming llama-turds that is a Bucklemming script. Frustation, sure, but not useless.

*Spoilers follow*

Yet another fan-favorite character (Eileen) was killed. One that Bucklemming carelessly and lazily and disrespectfully threw away (again). I'm telling you, that burned down crack house doesn't look like such a bad option in comparison now, does it?

I won't get into their (in)decision to make a call on whether to keep Crowley (who is now obviously a rat - So. Well. Hidden. That 'plot-twist'.....*slow clap*) or Lucifer as the ruler of Hell. I guess "the story" won't take them there. Or "the story" just locked them both in their room and screamed at them "We'll talk about this later!!" before stumbling off in a drug and alcohol induced stupor.

I won't get into the absolute lameness of the British Men of Letters, who were tasked with killing Sam and Dean, but instead wire-tap them (??), then are found out, and predictably exploited.....seriously....is a lobotomy a requirement to join the BMOL as well as the killing on command? How does anything they are doing make any sense? To anyone? Even Bucklemming? Oh...no...wait...it was "the story's" fault, right? The one that has now collapsed in the corner of the living room in a whimpering, shaking pile of pee and vomit.....that story?

OK. Oops. I actually did get into it there.

But as these are my parting shots for this show, I am not throwing them away. ;)

Unlike certain world events that I can do nothing about, this, I can do something about.

I won't watch anymore. Period. I won't retweet anything Supernatural related anymore, positive or negative. I will not click on episode reviews. No good press/bad press. Nada. Dead.

I can only recommend this course of action to anyone reading this that shares my opinion.

Or you can keep waiting for "the story" to wake up and come to it's senses.

Good luck with that.

Don't even bother
cassandracovill11 May 2017
Warning: Spoilers
Once again, The Buckleming Duo have proved they are completely out of touch with keeping the characters IN CHARACTER. An episode that starts off with the death of Eileen for no other reason. That was the first thirty seconds of the show.

It only went downhill from there with sexist remarks and creepy plot lines that really made no sense at all. Mary being brainwashed? In 3 days? I don't buy it. Ketch condemning Toni to death? Why? No explanation.

Lucifer and Crowley? That was just creepy and if they made one more comment about slavery I was going to scream.

All in all, this episode was not worth watching. It did nothing for the plot, and proved that these two cannot write for this show. All they want to do is kill off fan favorites "because they can" and it needs to stop already.

Out of step with the show's vibe
CubsandCulture5 July 2021
I know a lot of fans greatly dislike this episode because yet another woman character that the fans liked gets killed. That bothers me as well but only because of how often the trope is deployed. I never had the deeper connection to the character that others seemed to.

*My* problem with this episode is the central conceit of Mary being brain washed by BMOL is out of step with the show's vibe. It is the place where the BMOL stuff feels the most alien to the prior 11 seasons. In this universe possession is how a character turns against their family-not technology or psychology. The plot tension also is rather lax because we *know* the development is going to last about 2 episodes.

This is a good example of season 12 being so weak and too far a field from the rest of the show.

This show is dying, bury it!
Aries_Primal13 May 2017
Warning: Spoilers
This show is already dying! I mean it should end far before leviatan's season. Mary got Kech gun but instead kill him and escape she started crying? And man, I would kill to see Dean Winchester being as he was before, in this case punchung that British bit*h at face. One more thing, Crawley can ust appears in secure office of British idiots, but he should run away and could not disappear when lucifer attacked him? And why that power turned, any explanation? I just happened, so we can have another boring season in looking for Cas and that chick... You are pathetic, guys, let that torture end already! Banshee was three seasons and every episode was breathtaking, even more people can take. Supernatural started as something amazing and never seen before and turned into a lame. I am still here because I used to see Sam and Dean every thursday evening. There is no AC/DC/ no Ozzy, no more interesting cases, like the first one with vampire nest, sex between two alfa, the way they catch humans... Sam and Dean are keep wearing those boring clothes, having same conversations, man, I feel how my hair is growing, so bored am I!

Can we get over the politically correct BS please?
janedoe530016 June 2020
Warning: Spoilers
Okay, like a lot of other people I have a series of serious issues (intended) with this episode! HOWEVER.. they've been listed and explained carefully in a bunch of other reviews, so I won't bother. I just wanna say one thing; can we get over this whole "the episode is sexist" thing? Why, because a female hunter dies? Cause Mary is brainwashed and is a woman? How about the male hunter that dies? Or the fact that the leader of the BMOL is a woman? Or the fact that Lady Bevell is unharmed throughout the entire episode? Come on man, Dean would have normally pummeled someone bloody for the things she said in the car! Frankly I wish he had..

Major Failure
hannahisaacs-6177522 September 2021
Warning: Spoilers
This episode was a complete and utter failure. Half of it didn't make sense. I will truly be glad when The British Men of Letters are gone for good. The episode title references that the episode is going to be about Mary but she only has like 5 scenes, most of which aren't that long. It makes absolutely no sense that they completely brain washed her to the point where she wouldn't care about killing her sons is less than a week??? That writing makes her look weak. In fact, I think I'll also be glad when Mary is gone too because I have not liked her since her return. The fact that they killed off Eileen was ridiculous and served NOTHING to the plot. The opening scene made her look weak. She has been hunting her whole life yet she can't seem to get away from a hellhound? The scene where Dean and Sam are checking "snail mail" is completely out of character. Not once have they ever talked about checking mail or even having it, it just felt like it was thrown in. Do the BMOL really think locking Sam and Dean in the bunker is going to kill them?? They clearly haven't done enough research on the Winchesters if they really do think that's going to work.

Why
roeschgretchen16 January 2021
Warning: Spoilers
I was interested when the BMOL put out the hit on Eileen and was waiting for it to come back. But to have her be unceremoniously killed by a hellhound (which she can't see or hear and thus had no way to fight, especially at night) is awful. She didn't even need to die for the plot of the episode to work. I had such high expectations for this character since I knew she was a fan favorite and once she showed up I immediately loved her. To have her appear in only a handful of episodes, build up this potential relationship with Sam, and then kill her for, seemingly, no reason (since it was linked to the murders of hunters, not to when she accidentally killed the BMOL)? No thanks.

Warning: Spoilers
Did they not learn from the backlash from Charlie's death? The way they killed Eileen is repulsive. Killing a deaf character by a monster that can only be heard. Then Killing Crowley like he's nothing...just absolutely awful.....Oh and of course it's a bucklemming episode. 0/10.
