This memory and this show remains strong
Kingslaay14 April 2017
Warning: Spoilers
Supernatural is continuing to produce some decent quality episodes this season which is a huge improvement on the last season with Amara. The show is using their successful formula that shows the Winchesters hunting the monster of the week while slowly building up to a season finale that can be gut wrenching. This episode we saw a new monster in the form of a goat that is troubling a one horse town. It turns out that the goat dude is really an invention by the family who owns the town. The real monster and mystery is a god that has given the family power in exchange for human blood. This family had its own 'family business' and dark legacy.

The episode showed an interesting twist with who the real monster and culprit was. The best moment of the episode was perhaps the last scene with Sam and Dean reflecting on their legacy and what they will actually be remembered for and carving their initials on the table. The brothers, their hunt and chemistry remain an important part of the shows success. It was for this reason why Mary needed her own story line with the Men of Letters as she couldn't latch on to the brothers. There may be complications with Ketch as we see him possibly have other thoughts as he looks at Mary and her young son's photo. Perhaps he is considering the business he is in even though he seems focused on his mission and could very well go ahead with it.

This show has given us great memories, moments and still remains decent. I am hoping they build up the intensity and story to another great season finale like they have in previous seasons.

Great episode - The Memory Remains, but the Future Awaits...

I think if you read between the lines of the story so far, the writers are building up to season 13 being a wrap up season. Little details like the carving of their names into the bunker table, which hearkens back to the same thing they did as children in the Impala, arguably bringing Mary Winchester back into the fray, the nod to JDM with 'Lucille' earlier in the season, the re-entrance of the colt and the link between John, Mary and Azazel, Sam's demon blood etc. More overtly, Dean and Sam pondering on their legacy. There will be a lot of loose ends to tie off, and just shy of 30 episodes in which to do it. Personally, I think it would be great if somehow Lucifer's baby was integral to the whole thing. It would be tedious to have a re- enactment of the whole Amara's accelerated development phase again, I think they should strive for something different. If it is morally wrong for the Nephilim to be killed as a baby, perhaps Sam, Dean, Mary, Crowley and Castiel could attempt to co-opt it over to the good side. (Difficult for Crowley to do admittedly, but he could still play some role). It might initially require the intervention of God and his sister Amara in some way, but then the main cast could cooperate to mould the Nephilim into an ethical being, along the lines of Kevin Lomax in DA. If his phenomenal power is primarily psychic, it would make for more nuanced plot lines and less special effects than were required with Amara.

On a side note, before the show ends production for good, maybe they could devote an episode or two to American politics and the batsh*t crazy stuff that went on at Bohemian Grove, as well as examining the Kennedys in some way. It would be a very difficult sell, given the public affection for that family. I don't know if BG and the Kennedys are related, but that would have to be ascertained. If doing so, perhaps wisest to leave it towards the end of S13, if at all. There is a lot of occultism that occurred there, some pretty sordid stuff. Whatever the incumbent C-i-C's faults are, and they are manifold, that type of w*nk is not one of them - in fact, the BG cabal conspired to elect HRC, and in thereby doing, their agenda failed massively.

The moment about leaving their mark at the end is the best part of this episode.

Warning: Spoilers
This episode was pretty surprising to me. It had quite a bit of complexity and depth inside of the episode which I really enjoyed. You know, the thing I like about Supernatural is how some of the most random cases that Sam and Dean get can contribute to the central narrative in really unique and unpredictable ways. I believe the way this episode executed that theme was by the entire episode's cause being the men of letters's search through the bunker. Now, I know this has a chance of not fitting the theme, but what really made me enjoy this episode was the moment at the end where Sam and Dean etched their initials into the table to leave their mark. That had me smiling from ear to ear. Love it.

Good old fashioned Supernatural!

A filler episode no doubt but it was nostalgic to see hunting monsters with the colt again and it was great to get the same spooked feelings as when i was watching the first season.

it was a good filler and i hope this season lives up to its expectations.

A welcome returned to *horror*
CubsandCulture5 July 2021
This is one of season's 12 best episodes in large part because it could be readily inserted into seasons 1-5 with only a few relative minor elements edited out, i.e. Switch Ketch to Bobby, remove references to Mary, and the episode plays fine within the earlier seasons. It is a monster of the week episode and it provides a nice break from the tedium of this season's storyline. The script is good enough-it's a mixture of The Benders and any number of the pagan god episodes- that it would hold its own against most of the very good episodes of the early years. It isn't among the best episodes of the show but it is a fun compelling short horror film with just enough blood to be unnerving and enough gags to be funny.

Best of all Sgriccia's technical direction is exceptionally tight and it is the most unnerving episode in several years. The show became much more of a melodrama and fantasia as the years went on but every once in awhile the creators remembered that this show was meant to be a horror anthology. Exhibit #1.

Although the case is standard fair it is the context that holds the real meaning.

Everyone needs to reconnect. To go back to basics/the beginning. To return to what was even if only to gaze wistfully from a distance because you really can't go back. Ask yourself, what is it all for and what did all my choices achieve? A very poignant and emotional end to the episode that really allowed you to look back with fondness, happiness, and sorrow.

At some point people ought to get tired of the same plot recipe repeating itself
ofbodin-966-48552014 April 2017
Warning: Spoilers
Supernatural got me really hooked throughout their first season. It had backstories and character developments as well as a cool introduction to the supernatural world. Now we're at season 12, and every episode suddenly feels like a rerun. It's understandable. 12 seasons... It's hard to top a season plot where the antagonist was a god, so they went back to lesser evils, like humans and the Men of Letters. That is, the few moments in time where they don't make filler episodes unrelated to the main season plot, something they seem to do far too often. How many times do we have to suffer through the first 4 minutes of an episode where we always see through the eyes of a heavy-breathing killer? How often will the brothers pose as unconvincing agents and use awkward names when introducing themselves to doctors and coroners? How often must the exact same plot recipe repeat itself before this show becomes interesting and refreshing again? Apparently we have to wait a little more.

The episodes themselves are OK, and if this was the first time I watched the show it would peek my interest, but after seeing every episode for 12 seasons I have to admit: It utterly lacks originality and it is obvious that the show has no intention of straying from the same old plot recipe they've been using over and over and over. But we'll keep watching. After 12 seasons one has to see this through to the end, even if it's not that interesting anymore.

Filler episode
NatashaJAmos20151 January 2019
It feels weird to have a MOW filler episode right in the middle of the seasons story arc but there you go.
