Gods Live and Gods Die
ThomasDrufke1 June 2017
There are few shows as visually striking and as conceptually breathtaking as American Gods. At more than halfway through, it's more about executing the premise they've set up than it is awing me with unique things. I think I'm starting to catch on to what we should expect from every episode, not necessarily the specific content, but the overall flow of the story. This episode started off with another stunning prologue as the narration further explains the depths of the god's powers. I think it's important to remember he says "gods live and gods die", which certainly puts perspective and more stakes than I originally thought the show would have. If everyone can come back like Laura Moon, then what's really the point of all this? Although, it seems like Laura isn't as 'together' as she probably hopes. Laura's interaction with Shadow indicated to me that she has begun to practice the ways of the gods. Doesn't her attempted seduction remind you a little bit of that of Bilquis' in the hotel room? You have to wonder how far Laura will take this. It was also interesting to see the new gods' approach to kidnapping Shadow and Wednesday. Gillian Anderson continues to be haunting as 'Media' (Marilyn Monroe/Lucy), Technical Boy is an uncomfortable hybrid of annoying and maniacal, and we got our first glimpse at Crispin Glover's Mr. World. The three make up an interesting group of misfits who only seem to pose a threat because of what Wednesday has said, I've yet to see anything that would worry me about the lives of him or Shadow. We'll see going forward, that could definitely change.

War is coming

Warning: Spoilers
From the beginning of the season, I've been waiting for the first real confrontation between the Old and the New Gods and, finally it happened !

Gillian Anderson's versatility and charm was my personal highlight of this episode. She emulated Bowie and Monroe with ease, all while adding her very own sass to it. Crispin Glover was also quite menacing as Mr. World. We did finally have some insight about their motivations in this upcoming War of the Gods. The "brand new Lemon Scented You" the New Gods offered in their kitschy presentation (the final warning before the storm) did certainly not seem to please Mr. Wednesday and this looks promising for us, of course. From the beginning of this series, I just loved the whole idea of old traditions fighting the domination of the new digital age and how it makes you reflect on your own beliefs. The book adaptation so far, and the liberties they take with it, are very satisfying and well done.

The police station scenes were terrific, it had the action and the tension I've been craving for in this series and when they do it right, it's pretty great. Laura's fight with Mad Sweeney lightened the mood a bit and had a nice comedy spark, which I enjoyed. The beautiful opening animation scene also caught my eye. After the live-action vignettes of the previous episodes, it was a nice, effective and different way to tell the story of the gods, in this case, the ones who are forgotten and disappear.

With three episodes remaining, I finally feel it can only go up from here.

One of the Best episodes till now

Warning: Spoilers
This episode is exactly what i expected when i heard the name of the series and saw the book it is based on. Mr.World and his son i presume and the lady god i guess sounds like it adds the missing element to the show that is "Gods" with "s" not just Mr. Wednesday. The powers of Laura and her character has really developed and also is a great asset to the series. Shadow though is starting to lake the lights around him and need a new kick in his character as i see it to shine again as the hero of the series(if he supposed to be). Ricky White acting is just great and can't wait to see more of this guy and this show. 8.2/10.

Nicely Done, but...

Well made series, A class actors and acting.

I just feel uncomfortable with European gods being used in American mythology.

The U.S. Movie industry is becomes really obvious now to most informed people across the world.

It's a bit like the Hollywood myth that America won WW2 solo and no one else was there.

It would be nice if the U.S. movie industry could stop looking into the mirror for once.
