After releasing his election conspiracy documentary “2000 Mules” as an on-demand digital film, far-right filmmaker Dinesh D’Souza pivoted to a theatrical release in 411 locations this weekend — including support from national theater chain Cinemark — grossing a reported 751,755.
“2000 Miles” was first released two weeks ago on the video streaming platform Rumble with little mainstream marketing, as even Fox News and Newsmax refused to advertise the film amid their own legal troubles for promoting conspiracy theories from the 2020 presidential election. While D’Souza’s distribution company has provided little data on the film’s on-demand performance, it said in a press release that the film grossed over 1 million in its first 12 hours on Rumble, a result that D’Souza said prompted the theatrical release this weekend.
“With the success of the movie, everyone talking about the movie, a lot of independent theaters began to call us, ‘Hey, why didn’t we have this movie in the theater?...

Rudy Giuliani is already the favorite to win something this election season – a Razzie for ‘Borat 2’
Rudy Giuliani is going to be a big winner this year. Forget about the looming 2020 US presidential election, as there’s a more fascinating contest on the horizon, at the 41st Golden Raspberry Awards, or Razzies, which honor the worst the film industry has to offer each year. This is not Russian disinformation and it is not “fake news.”
The former New York City mayor, once known heroically as “America’s Mayor” in the wake of 9/11, has been a consistent fixture on TV over the last few years in both his capacity as a vocal GOP surrogate and personal attorney for President Donald Trump. Earlier this year Giuliani hit peak notoriety as a central figure in the Ukraine scandal that led to the President’s impeachment by Congress.

Dinesh D’Souza’s next documentary “Trump Card,” a paean to the current president and attack on his Democratic opponents, is due to open in theaters on August 7, just two weeks ahead of the Republican National Convention.
In a statement, the conservative filmmaker will focus on what he said is the “corruption and gangsterization” of socialism in the Democratic party as embodied by the two remaining presidential candidates, Sen. Bernie Sanders and former vice president Joe Biden.
Here’s the full synopsis:
Written and directed by acclaimed film maker, scholar, and New York Times best selling author Dinesh D’Souza, Trump Card is an expose of the socialism, corruption and gangsterization that now define the Democratic Party. Whether it is the creeping socialism of Joe Biden or the overt socialism of Bernie Sanders, the film reveals what is unique about modern socialism, who is behind it, why it’s evil, and...

Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice and the documentary Hillary's America: The Secret History of the Democratic Party both picked up four Razzies to dominate the 37th Golden Raspberry Awards, Hollywood's annual celebration of the year's worst films.
Dinesh D'Souza's reviled "so-called documentary" was named Worst Picture of 2016 along with Worst Actor (for his own narration), Worst Director and Worst Actress (for whoever portrayed Hillary Clinton in the film).
"And the reason you're giving it to me is because you're very upset that Trump won. You haven't gotten over...

Cue Sad Ben Affleck. The actor was named one of the "winners" of the 2017 Razzies, or Golden Raspberry Awards, which "honor" the worst in 2016 film making. The list was announced Saturday, a day before the Oscars, per tradition. Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, in which the actor played Batman and Henry Cavill played Superman, "won" four Razzies, including Worst Screen Combo for the two stars. But it was the documentary Hillary's America: The Secret History of the Democratic Party that took home the big prize—Worst Picture. The film's director, writer and main star, Dinesh D'Souza gave an acceptance speech via...

Sorry, Ben Stiller -- according to the Razzies, Zoolander 2 was quite possibly the worst movie of 2016.
The Razzies revealed its nominations for the year's worst films on Monday, one day before the Oscar nominations. Zoolander 2 earned the most nominations with nine, followed by Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, which earned eight nominations.
And this year, the nominees have more competition for the dubious honor -- the categories were expanded from five to six contenders.

Topped by Star Trek Beyond, five films grossed over $20 million this weekend for the first time since May 24, 2015 and for only the sixth time ever*. In the five previous instances $45.6 million was the largest gross for the #1 film when Monsters University topped the weekend back on June 30, 2013, which separates this weekend from the rest thanks to the estimated $59.6 million Beyond delivered in its debut performance. Also opening this weekend, and topping the $20 million threshold, was the impressive performance from New Line and Warner's Lights Out along with the rather disappointing opening for Ice Age: Collision Course. Overall, the top twelve grossed over $183 million, up 29.4% when compared to the same weekend last year. The estimated $59.6 million opening for Star Trek Beyond is enough to take #1 for the weekend, but that's a 15% drop compared to the $70.1 million opening for Star Trek Into Darkness, and that's not including the $13.5 million it carried into...

Two more sequels arrive this weekend and, like several sequels this year, both are looking to underperform when compared to the previous installment in their respective franchises. Star Trek Beyond and Ice Age: Collision Course represent the 21st and 22nd wide release sequels this year after only four (Finding Dory, Captain America: Civil War, The Purge: Election Year and Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice) have been able to outperform their franchise predecessor at the domestic box office. Also opening this weekend is the new PG-13 thriller Lights Out from producer James Wan as well as the moderate roll out of Fox Searchlight's Absolutely Fabulous: The Movie while Hillary's America expands nationwide into over 1,200 theaters. Targeting a first place finish is Star Trek Beyond, the third film in the rebooted franchise and the first with someone other than J.J. Abrams at the helm. Those duties fell on the shoulders of...

Never mind collective apathy, political docs have won out in 2016, though not by record-breaking numbers. On the eve of the Republican National Convention, Donald Trump supporters and dissenters can unite under the anti-Hillary documentary Hillary's America: The Secret History of the Democratic Party by Dinesh D'Souza as the year's biggest doc per theater average opener. This isn't the first for D'Souza, who won box office bragging rights during the last Presidential…...

For a fifth straight weekend in a row an animated film has taken the #1 spot at the box office as Illumination and Universal's The Secret Life of Pets followed up its record-breaking opening with a chart-topping sophomore session, pushing the launch of Sony's Ghostbusters reboot to second. Meanwhile, Finding Dory has now become the highest grossing animated release of all-time domestically as Warner Bros. adds two new films to 2016's century club with The Legend of Tarzan and The Conjuring 2. The weekend was down 26% from last week and ~17% compared to last year, yet there is still plenty to highlight. The Secret Life of Pets finished #1 for a second weekend in a row with an estimated $50.5 million (51.5% drop), bringing its domestic cume to an impressive $203.1 million after just ten days in release. This already places the animated hit higher than Disney's Tangled and just behind Pixar's Ratatouille on the all-time animated chart.

Friday AM Update: Sony's Ghostbusters reboot brought in an estimated $3.4 million from Thursday night previews. Green Lantern also kicked off its Thursday with $3.4 million before opening with $53.1 million, X-Men: First Class started with $3.37 million on Thursday and opened with $55 million and The Great Gatsby brought in $3.25 million and opened with $50 million. For director Paul Feig and star Melissa McCarthy that's an improvement over the last two R-rated collaborations, which saw Spy bring in $1.6 million on Thursday followed by a $29 million opening and The Heat, which brought in $1 million on Thursday and opened with $39.7 million. From a PG-13 perspective, a few other films that had similar Thursday performances include Pacific Rim ($3.6m Thursday, $37.2m opening), Independence Day: Resurgence ($4m/$41m), Warcraft ($3.1m/$24.1m) and San Andreas ($3.1m/$54.5m). Given the wide variety of comparisons it's tough to gain much insight, though an opening over $40 million still seems likely. We'll be back tomorrow with Friday estimates,...
