I think that the show knew this might be the last episode given how it was written, but it certainly left open the possibility of a fourth season if it had been ordered.
Cotton getting damned to hell forever is a tough loss, but on a show like this you had to have some characters experience a sad ending.
John and Mary's reconciliation may have been something fans demanded, but it felt forced and it was a little improbable how Alden knew how to make it happen.
It wasn't a bad finale, it just didn't stand out in any special way.
