No budget wonder
BandSAboutMovies9 May 2019
Warning: Spoilers
Jesse Peterson is tired of the abusive. He's sick of his alcoholic father beating on him and his mom. He's tired of the bullies. And he's decided to kill himself on his birthday, telling only his friend Sarah, who he makes a promise not to tell anyone. However, as she prepares to leave on a vacation, she decides that she has to stop him.

Jesse is in a small town with no hope. His sexual identity - imagined or not - offends the small-minded bullies. His father is a lifelong drunk and jobless loser whose wife killed herself when Jesse was six. And when his only friend, Sarah, plans on leaving for college, he feels that this is the one loss he can't recover from.

Katerina Eichenberger, who plays Sarah, is great in this film, as is Max MacKenzie, who is Jesse. For a $13,000 budget, this movie looks, feels and plays well ahead of its limitations. It emerges as a movie with something big to say.

JUST SAY GOODBYE (2017) MOVIE REVIEW BY MOVIE BURNER ENTERTAINMENT Warning: Spoilers
Why I Watched it: The subject matter and the trailer looked interesting. Random Thoughts: Now the film is just beginning to get some notice on the festival circuit, a small indie film with a first time director. Always enjoying seeing new filmmakers and actors.

What I Liked: Now the subject matter is not only touchy but very tricky to handle and when you're dealing with teen suicide then you turn the dial up to eleven. I think the handled the subject with respect and also restraint and to be honest the film was never heavy handed on the subject a lot of credit goes to Max MacKenzie his performance was understated, he didn't walk around with a sign that said I want to kill myself we got to see him in daily life and the strain that put on him. The film was very smart not to point to one thing, it's a series of things and I think they make a point that the reason is varied and sometimes very hard for the people to talk about. It was clear he wasn't looking for attention, he was in pain but I also got the sense that he was tired of a life that made no rhyme or reason. As good as MacKenzie was I also very impressed with Katerina Eichbenbeger, she had an ease about her, for a young actress with not a lot of credits to her name or IMDB page I never caught her acting, she felt not only very real but a kind of person you would have been lucky to have as a best friend. Her role is hard cause she's the person who knows and it would have been easy to just make it about her and what she has to do and the guilt she has to deal with but they do a very nice job of showing their friendship and relationship.

That's another thing I think this film does very well is show a friendship especially one in high school, their friendship rang very real and true. They also touch on if either was "in love" with the other but it was clear they loved each other deeply and cared about each other. The film does a nice job of dealing with the subject of suicide from both sides, cause it does effect other people no one of course lives in a vacuum. They do a very good job of showing the frustrations on both sides and the tole it takes on everyone. I'm torn with the third act and I don't want to give anything away and there's parts I liked and some that just rubbed me the wrong way but the one thing it did well was show that there's no easy answers and maybe there's no real happy ending either way.

What I didn't Like: The pacing was a bit slow and I think it would serve the film to at least cut ten at least ten minutes the flow almost stops in the middle of the film, I thought we were heading to the end and realize they was over thirty minutes left, it just needed to be tighter for my taste. I wish they could have saved some of the melodrama and I don't mean with the teenagers cause those two go hand in hand, but the father of MacKenzie's character is a mess, I mean family secrets, being a drunk, it felt a bit much and oddly I thought the teenage characters were well drawn out but the adults were lucky to have two dimensions. I understood the backstory of the mother committing suicide and what they meant to the father and son but the father comes off as a cliche and the son came off more believable. Like I said I'm mixed with the ending, I wished it was happier, I'll say that and I do understand that we don't always get super happy ending but I wanted one just the same.

Final Thoughts: I enjoyed it, I really appreciated the approach to the subject matter, no fingers were pointed here, no blame just someone struggling and the people around them that it effected.

Excellent in every way
steve980121 January 2018
First I cannot believe that this incredible movie was made for just under $15,000. It was highly professional with excellent direction, excellent screenplay with an intense storyline and subject matter of teen bullying and suicide. The dialogue was very smart. The score was first rate. As was the cinematography. I'm leaving the best for last, the two lead actors: MAX MacKENZIE and KATERINA EICHENBERGER made their characters very likable, sympathetic and interesting. I was rooting for both of them. So much so that it was good that I saw it at home, since I tended to address the screen with my feelings during many scenes. The ups and downs of this boy's life took an emotional toll on me. It really took me to heart. This movie really deserves to be seen by a wide audience.

A Masterful Story from a Young Director
jesserwalters5 June 2019
This movie has heart from start to finish, both on screen and off. The cast and crew bring a certain love to this story that carry this story from its fun, light hearted laughter to its breathless silences. Such a wonderful movie was brought to light by director, Matt Walting, who was only in high school at the time of filming. This was not an easy take to take on but this film is masterfully produced and will leave a lasting impression on you. Please see this film.

isn't your usual indie drama
a1097511 August 2020
Within the first 5 minutes you know Just Say Goodbye isn't going to be your usual indie drama, this powerful and at times overwhelming portrayal of teenage friendship and suicide may well have been filmed on a shoestring budget but through a combination of heartfelt performances, well-written dialogue and surprisingly sophisticated cinematography, you're soon invested in the story and willing to forgive any of the technical shortcomings.

In terms of tone, Just Say Goodbye feels perfect, not only handling these difficult subjects with care, but also showing a different side to what we are usually shown, the character of Jesse feels fleshed out and nuanced, reminding the viewer that anyone could be harboring suicidal thoughts and it only takes something small to push them over the edge. For this, I have to give credit to not only the writer Layla O'Shea but also Max Mackenzie for his delicate performance.

Also impressing was Katerina Eichbenbeger, it was a surprise to see how few credits she has to her name, her skilled portrayal as Sarah not only felt real but also relatable, the effects of Jesse's failing mental health is plain to see and the full range of emotions that Sarah goes through was handled perfectly. I fully expect bigger things await Eichbenbeger in the future.

Given the films small budget, I'm willing to forgive the majority of the technical limitations, unfortunately, however, there were some problems with the sound that did distract me from enjoying the affected scenes, with some parts not feeling as clean as can be, while other parts feeling too much like ADR, however, given his relative inexperience as a filmmaker, I'd say Matt Walting handles the task extremely well,

Anchored by two excellent performances and strong writing, Just Say Goodbye is an impressive, gritty and powerful piece of indie-cinema that pulls no punches and stays with you long after your first viewing.

Thought provoking tragedy. Have your Kleenex ready.
brooklynct20039 January 2019
Warning: Spoilers
Well written and produced.

It begins as a classic coming of age movie. A movie John Hughes might have produced in the 1980s. It quickly transforms into a dark story about relentless bullying, abusive father, and the struggles of Jesse Peterson( Max MacKenzie) with his own feelings of depression, hopelessness, and nihilistic view of the world around him.

All the oppression that undergoes at home (with an abusive drunk father(William Galatis), who exhibits bizarre destructive behavior towards himself and his son) and bullying at school to suppress depression with witty humor and friendship with Sarah(Katerina Eichenberger), the one person in his life who unconditionally loves and supports him.

We observe with optimism as certain positive events in life seem to offer some redemption.. A random event sets the wheels in motion again and it becomes a race in time to save Jesse,( Max Mackenzie.) from himself

Most viewers will relate to some of the scenes, perhaps reflecting on similar events in their own lives. It's a sad movie but should leave moviegoers more empowered to take positive action in their own lives and relationships.

Fantastic Film
gershom427 June 2019
Just Say Goodbye does an exception job tacking the troubling topic of teen suicide. The story is compelling and the writing is particularly good. In addition, Max MacKenzie shines in his portrayal of Jesse. The high quality of this movie is an astonishing feat on the part of its creators, given its tiny budget.

Very Good Indie Film with Powerful Message
rblackmon-741865 December 2019
I absolutely loved this movie, people may complain about the acting and etc However, I feel as though people need to focus on the message of the movie which was very, very powerful and needed especially in the culture we're in today. I promise you won't be disappointed by this movie, it's one that should be shared with family, friends and even co-workers. Because we all never know what's on someone's mind or how they're feeling from day too day. Take out time and listen to the people around you, secrets hurt the person that's keeping them and even the more the person that knows about it. Learn to speak up and speak out - minutes count and so does a person's life. Great Movie!!

A strong independent film
marty1918-852-53019911 September 2018
JUST SAY GOODBYE is quite good. While it's low budget roots are apparent in some of the technical aspects, the writing is strong and performances capable. I would certainly recommend this movie, especially to parents and educators. It pulls no punches and identifies a problem our children face every day.

Emotional, Excellent Movie
attiesmom21 July 2018
Great film. So emotional, so amazing!!!. I wouldn't mention low-budget, except to say that it would have given it more stars if at times the sound quality was better, but hey for this price AWESOME movie!!! Movie's topic is suicide;, so it is a heavy-hearted film. However a topic that needs to be discussed and this movie is a great way to do that. Congrats to the entire team that participated in this movie!!!

A No-Budget Masterpiece
eamon_yates22 January 2018
Ok, where to start with this one?

If you only read this far then take this away, WATCH THIS FILM!

Just Say Goodbye is everything I love about watching and reviewing independent films. It's so easy to forget that Just Say Goodbye is a no budget film and, though I am sure it will have had its restrictions simply because of a lock of budget, at no point does it feel like a film shot on limited funds. Instead, Just Say Goodbye takes you through a compelling, emotional rollercoaster of a journey that is utterly enthralling to watch.

When I traditionally think of no budget films I think of films that have bad audio with hard to hear dialogue, a non existent score, a poor attempt at a story and poor visuals combined with wooden acting although the odd gem can appear. Well this is one of those gems, in every way! Let me expand.

The audio is great. At no point was I wishing there were subtitles so I could understand what was being said and the sound mixing is done very well without interrupting your experience. I can only congratulate the team on a job well done here as immediately there is a sense of professionalism with this movie because of this. Then there is the original score composed by Diana Jeffery and Joshua Kaster which simply compliments the great images on screen perfectly. I look forward to hearing other scores from these two. The final song during the credits is beautiful too, a great choice for this film.

Jeff Simons as DOP creates a beautifully visual world worthy of being on the big screen. His steady shots and fantastic on screen compositions flow through this film as if it were carrying a multi-million pound budget. Each shot is brilliantly edited together to create a lovely pace and emotion through out this story.

This film does not have a huge number of characters in it nor does it need to but each character is played very well by its respective actor. From the recluse and sulking father Rick played by William "Bill" Galatis through to the coolness of Sarah's mum played by Pamela Morgan and the jealousy of the school bully Chase played by Jesse Walters, all delivered good, strong supporting roles. Then there are the lead characters of Jesse and Sarah played by Max MacKenzie and Katerina Eichenberger respectively. These two have a great on screen chemistry that really delivers during the climactic scenes of this production. You strongly believe in the both of them and want to support their success together. Each delivers a depth and naturalness to their characters that is seldom seen in such productions. Hats off to both of you, I will happily be watching your continued futures on-screen as they continue to unfold.

Then there is the story of Just Say Goodbye written by Layla O'Shea. Before any magic can happen on screen it is absolutely imperative that you have a good story. This carries even more weight when you are unable to hide behind multi million dollar budgets or expansive VFX and fancy editing. What Layla delivers is remarkable. A hugely poignant story about an exceptionally difficult subject that is buried in such a realism and depth that I can only assume it must have some sort of personal connection to her. If not, bravo, a thousand times bravo, I believed every second of this story and its characters. By the end of the emotional powerhouse that is Just Say Goodbye, I honestly had no idea which route the story was going to take. I was invested, compelled and willing it to go one way and not the other and yes, I even shed a tear or two during its climax, I have no shame in admitting to that. The film is not fast paced but rather a slow burner that grows into its characters depths and hidden nuances and allows you to form attachments to each of them and their histories. Indeed, it is this depth and history that leads them down this path to this volatile situation and masterfully dictates how each person handles this difficult situation.

Lastly, I want to put a spotlight onto Matt Walting the Director of this masterpiece. This is a Director I will absolutely continue to watch and hopefully one day get the privilege to work alongside. Matts work has created a film that packs a solid punch considering its small size. It felt every bit like a more expensive production. Matt has skilfully worked with his actors to clearly create characters that are more than just your stereotypical people and has evidently created an artistic environment that helps each deliver the chemistry and best performances needed on screen. His work to focus on the on screen impact and emotions, ensuring that he has the right balance of every element in the finished article, is evident in every shot. Matt has clearly worked diligently and faithfully to create a film that he can be truly proud of. This young director reminds me of a certain Mr Spielberg with the level of natural talent and skill that he demonstrates at such a young age. I only hope he gets the chance to have a career just as good if not better than the esteemed master himself.

In summary, Just Say Goodbye is a masterpiece, elegantly crafted and expertly delivered. I strongly implore you to watch this film and enjoy it for what it is, a no budget masterpiece.

Great film and honest drama
mikeaperez-584855 May 2018
Really wonderful acting, dialog and treatment of a tough topic that movies with 10 times the scale get wrong. Best indie movie on family dynamics, teen struggles and the fragile balance between hope and despair I've seen in a while and all the more impressive given its astoundingly low cost. It goes to show that great storytelling and acting will transport viewers on an emotional journey, no matter what the budget. Am looking forward to seeing what the folks involved do next!

Engaging teen drama
allthatjazz-0989723 September 2019
I thought this indie film was impressive for many reasons, but it was the performances by the two lead actors that made this film work.

The performances of Katerina Eichenberger and Max MacKenzie were believable in their respective roles and connected quite well with one another making their lifelong friendship believable. Eichenberger takes on the role of the supportive, yet strongminded friend. She hit the marks all the way through the film.

MacKenzie had the challenge of conveying the believability of being a depressed teen dealing with a dysfunctional parent. MacKenzie's character believes that taking his life is the only way out of ending his troubles. No spoilers here... so give it a watch.

The young director/DP, did a good job with the shots he chose to tell this dramatic tale. He has a good eye for how to tell a story cinematically, so he deserves a lot of credit for having those skills at such a young age. It can be a challenge to take on both key jobs of directing as well as being the cinematographer. This is not something that I've seen in recent memory.

Mechanically, I thought the film looked professional, specifically with the lighting. The sound quality was good, with only minor interruptions.

The screenplay, by Layla O'Shea was an original take on such a tramatic subject. The editor did a good job piecing the story together. I was also impressed with some of the music that I heard too.

We must remember that independent filmmaking is quite the undertaking to say the least, there are many factors that need to be considered when watching these films, as we do not have the inflated budgets of Hollywood Productions.

Amazing Film
commonfactorunite24 April 2023
I agree. This film was great. The ratings aren't as high as thought. We need to stop looking at core themes as serious as this topiic with high level theatrics. Forgive me but this attitude means we examine these issues in the real world with the same level ofvertainty. At time reality can be strsnger than fiction and only when we understand and makes sense we give itconcern. Thisus absolutely the wrong approach. If we care then we will speak to someone and educate ourselves. Have we not learnt from Slavery, Black Lives Matter and Indigionous Peoples whom we never gave and credit to up till now? I have Anxiety, Depression and Borderline and attempted 10 times. I finally gave up, lol. Seriously many don't understand, the feelings, despair, lack of trust, lack of understanding, is true to how Jesse felt. He had little in his life.one true friend but inspite of Sarah as amazing g as She is. He felt lonely, trying desperately to find something more to hope for. He had to suppress so much because no one could really understand. The stigma is so real even today. Hospitals tell you if you really wanted to die you would have. Others want all the understanding but not willing to give any. I resonate. I'm much better these days but, people need to know these feelings ARE REAL. Some seem ok because as with the flowers, it's a hope, something to look towards, but it can only sustain for so long. Don't take someone's feelings as nothing and don't give up. Talk about the movie and make sure if a friend seems weird and hopeless shower them with as much love, understanding, friends, and help as possible. They suffer cause they Love Much.

abigaildonaghue23 May 2019
This film is a fantastic work of art that inspires and enlightened its viewers. The production quality is astounding, particularly considering the budget and filming conditions, and the actors are phenomenal. Most importantly, it makes you feel something significant- something very few films have the power to achieve. I would recommend this film to anyone and everyone. You should stop reading reviews and start watching.

A grounded/heartfelt indie film
theindierundown29 September 2019
Teenage director Matt Walting did a fabulous job bringing Layla Oshea's script to life in his feature film directorial debut. Max MacKenzie shines as the lead in this film that examines the ripple effects of how bullying & a bad home life can contribute to poor mental health in teens. A topical, important and competently made independent film.

For a very low budget movie, JSG is a realistic picture of todays bullying scene in any school. Main female role by Katerina Eichenberger is as strong as it could be.

Tragic masterpiece
michaelhollister-5474820 February 2020
This film was so inventive and compelling I couldn't look away. Just Say Goodbye addresses suicide, bullying, addiction, and grief simultaneously with amazing results.

Skilled ensemble acting with deft writing and direction really made this film a winner. As a gay ,middle aged addict, who can remember my teen years I can attest to this film's authenticity.

Check it out.
