Original, questioning and strange
funambuline18 November 2018
It's not that often that I don't really know what to think about a movie. The technical part is really enjoyable. The synopsis strange and mysterious. We enter little by little, day to day, in the reality of Jonathan and we understand very slowly what this reality means. It's dark. But not really sad. It's complex. The movie doesn't try to simplify or over explain it, which is great. But also left me with too much questioning to be at ease. I don't know if the ending is great and really smart, or a bit dull. I don't know. And it's fine.

And perhaps this movie is great because of this: it leaves you with more questions than answers.

Balance with our conscious is hard to maintain
KarenYVR11 October 2018
Warning: Spoilers
First feature by director/co-writer Bill Oliver, Jonathan is a visceral and groundbreaking drama with a sci-fi base that I believe every one of us can relate to. Two brothers having a very rare neurological syndrome, inhabiting one body, but dual consciousness. Hooked? I was too. I was expecting a high-tech sci-fi extravaganza, instead I got something more fulfilling. A concept, an idea, a study of sorts that displays the struggle we have in our every day lives with trying to balance life and work.

A moving allegory of self-love
oscarvonseth12 November 2018
This beautiful little film might best be described as an interesting new take on the Narcissus myth, with an impressive central performance by Ansel Elgort. Both stylish and moving, this small scale story raises questions about the nature of desire, compassion, self-reflexivity and unconventional love.

admirable work
Kirpianuscus8 December 2018
One of films who I love . Maybe, because, as schizoid person, I am not real far by the world of Jonathan. Or maybe because it is fascinating the manner to use the basic idea. A profound delicate subject and a seductive exploration of a dark and not comfortable universe. A film proposing only questions and no answers. Impecable acting and great story. A film about loneliness , with a precise target, in clothes of Sci . F., trip across a life who is not so different and who, in fact, represents, with the few nuances, the rule more than the exception. "Jonathan" is a great film not for the artistic and technical aspects but for the state after its end.

A good movie!

I like bold stories. Every day I learn to watch movies and have fun with them without wanting to be so demanding and precise in details. Great performances and a different and engaging story.

Intriguing watch
nezbitkn227 July 2019
Warning: Spoilers
I must admit, reading some of the reviews on here do make me giggle to myself. I wonder if some are actually watching the same film.

Anyway, to cut a long story short, Jonathan and John are the same person. He is dealing with, in Lehman's terms, what used to be known as 'split personality disorder'.

The signs are clear as my newly cleaned windows that this is the case from simple clues such as going to bed. He goes to sleep in one bed, then wakes up in another. Unless someone is coming along to pick him up in the evening, it's clear it's all the same person.

So, people are claiming this, that and the other, which is funny to be fair, but the nurse is their mother, hence the home scene where he is looking at old photographs of them all on holiday 🙄

Second of all, he isn't dead at the end, the taxi is the treatment and the driver is the program of such treatment to explain to the brain as to what is going on. Mum know that she is losing a part of her son that she loves but at the same time, she has already gotten rid of a female personality, which evidently she didn't like either. The taxi ride has two conclusions. One; John is dropped off at a desolate beach and gives his love, and two; Jonathan continues his journey to the "airport" which basically means he will move on to the next chapter of his life without his "brother". It isn't really that complicated as some make out.

In a way I feel this film is quite sad and disturbing, and I understand people claiming Nurse (Mum) is a bad person, but she just wants her son to prevail against all other personalities and come back to her. She leaves it to them in the end and the strongest prevails. The French on the radio; Jonathan was learning french earlier in the film. John wanted to see the place where their girlfriend never took him; "he always made excuses not to come". Don't think too hard and it is all very clear.

Hope you enjoy my review and happy film watching 😃

Entertaining, but...
afalez17 November 2018
Warning: Spoilers
Did nobody else notice the absurdity of their sleep pattern or them sleeping? They'd always go to bed for (what was it again?) 4 hours a night. 4 hours each? If so, each of them were only up for 8 hours, yet they both held down jobs and had tons of time leftover for extraneous activities? Wish they had thought this through a bit more.

intriguing premise
SnoopyStyle19 December 2018
Jonathan (Ansel Elgort) is a buttoned up reserved guy. He wakes up at 7am everyday and watches a video of a doppelganger who seems to be a much more relaxed version of himself. He goes to work at an architecture firm and visits Dr. Mina Nariman (Patricia Clarkson) who is treating him for an unknown condition. He always goes to sleep early in the afternoon. One day, he runs into Elena (Suki Waterhouse) on the streets. She claims to know him at night which reveals the shocking truth.

The premise is intriguing and it holds its mystery well for the first act. I was thinking clones or twins. Spoilers, it's not. I actually like the reveal. It's setup for something tense. I want the paranoia. I want the distrust. It gets delivered but not in a satisfying way. So much of this movie is one guy watching the other on video that it drains the intensity out of the flow. I also want real action and tension in the plot. Once the reveal happens, the movie's intensity slowly slides down. I like some of the ideas but this needs more to appeal to a bigger audience.

Is Love giving up your live for the one you love ?
tomsawyer-0185821 November 2018
Warning: Spoilers
This is another slow movie, it could have been much more action packed, but it does not try to catch your attention that way.

Two personalities live in a body, and they try to get along, as brothers. They are very different, and so one personality tends to live better than the other, they can't avoid cheating each other.

Half way, I thought the movie was loosing me, but then at the right time, it turns around its perspective in it's everyday routine to regain my attention.

I like the acting, but everything else is pretty dull. Like the life they both live. Boring.

One of them will eventually end up dominating the other, want to erase him, kill him. Or wants to commit suicide, to avoid erasing the other, but that would also make him a killer.

How to get out of this dilemma? In a positive or negative way. The directors made their choice, it could have been different.

Starts interesting but gets boring pretty fast.
deloudelouvain30 December 2018
I don't know why this movie is categorized as a sci-fi as there are no elements of science fiction present, or they must refer to his condition of two people living in one body. To me that's more a split personality and has not much to do with sci-fi. But it doesn't really matter, the movie started with a mysterious feeling but the more the movie advances the lesser it gets interesting. There are just too much stupid decisions that just make no sense at all in this movie and so I just lost interest and got bored. The acting of Ansel Elgort is okay, but a bit monotone. Another reviewer will remember this movie for a long time. Well to me it's just the opposite, I will forget everything about it tomorrow.

A quiet and intelligent film
howard.schumann12 October 2018
Warning: Spoilers
If you feel that your body holds two distinct personalities, perhaps one public and the other private, you are not alone. Many people display different sides of their personality at different times. For most people, however, the condition, what might be described as the "Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde" syndrome, can be classified as being "psychological" in nature. In first-time director Bill Oliver's gripping fantasy Jonathan, however, the problem is definitely physical. As superbly performed by Ansel Elgort ("Baby Driver") who plays both roles, two brothers, John and Jonathan, each have distinct personalities but share the same body. Stabilized by a brain stimulation device that monitors their time, the two men maintain a rigidly controlled schedule that includes strict rules of behavior in order to survive.

Abandoned by their mother at birth, they are supervised by Dr. Mina Nariman (Patricia Clarkson, "Maze Runner: The Death Cure") who has studied the brothers since their childhood and is the author of an article in a scientific journal that describes their condition in detail. Alternating the hours when they sleep and are awake, Jonathan gets up every morning at 7 a.m., goes to work as a part-time draftsman in an architectural firm, then goes to bed at 3 p.m., getting four hours of sleep. At 7 p.m. John takes over his body and remains conscious for twelve hours, his entire life unfolding at night, barely seeing the sun during most of the year. Though physical look-alikes, John and Jonathan have different personalities. John is more casual and laid-back, more open with his emotions, and has a more vigorous social life.

Jonathan, on the other hand, is a more up-tight, straight-laced type whose hair is slicked back to give him the nondescript look of a business executive. To let Jonathan know what happened to him in the previous twelve hours, John leaves a video each night describing what he did during the time he is conscious. His talk normally consists of mundane activities such as shopping, paying bills, doing the laundry, and so forth, nothing very exciting to report in their circumscribed universe. Because we never see John outside of the video, however, we become more attached to Jonathan, though in truth, they are as dependent on each other as two people can ever be. For example, if John drinks too much or stays out all night, Jonathan feels exhausted and even hung over the next morning.

The brothers maintain the status quo until John breaks the rule that says that having a girlfriend is a non-starter. When Jonathan reports that he's been feeling a little tired of late, he hires an investigator (Matt Bomer, "The Nice Guys") to track John's night time activities and finds out that John has been secretly dating Elena (Suki Waterhouse, "The Bad Batch"), a young woman who works at a bar. Jonathan, furious over an action that he sees violates the terms and conditions that Dr. Nariman had set, presses John to end the relationship. Admitting his indiscretion, John is forced to explain his condition to Elena, sadly telling her that their relationship has to end. Though the air has been cleared, John becomes depressed, retreats into a shell and fails to respond to Jonathan's video messages.

To complicate matters even more, Jonathan establishes a relationship with Elena, straining his ties with John even more. It is only when a crisis point is reached that the only logical solution asserts itself. Jonathan is a compelling film but one that is hard to categorize. Though it has elements of science fiction, fantasy, and maybe even horror, ultimately Jonathan is more of a character study than anything else. Its focus is on the human element of the story and Oliver refuses to indulge in sensationalism or melodramatic plot twists that might appeal to a wider audience. It is a quiet and intelligent film that is basically about trust and the compromises required in sharing your life with someone you care deeply about. It is about loving people as if your life depends on it. In Jonathan's case, it does.

It was good but...
mimicheers21 February 2021
Warning: Spoilers
When I saw the movie I thought ouuu Ansel Elgort lol. The movie started well I saw it going in a different direction when miss Elena was introduced. I honestly thought that john was going to wake up when Johnathan was with Elena. I feel like that would have been a way better bump in the plot rather then then just breaking up. Next some parts were a little difficult to follow, I found myself becoming confused when it came to some of the videos from both John and Johnathan. Another thing I wish we saw more of john being awake, we saw Johnathan's point of view but never John's. We never truly knew John or what he was going through which sucked. Also the ending was dragged out to me, them switching constantly it was dragged out it would have been better if they ended up both being awake at the same time. Overall I enjoyed it up until Johnathan started seeing Elena.

Great Concept Marred By Poor Focus/Organization
zkonedog21 January 2019
There is no doubt that the idea behind "Jonathan" is an intriguing one: one body, two personalities, each operating for half of the 24 hour cycle. There are many interesting directions a story like that could take. Unfortunately, this film hardly touches on any of them, instead setting up a pretty standard, run-of-the-mill love triangle formula, eschewing all the potential "good stuff".

For a basic plot summary, "Jonathan" tells the story of, well, Jonathan (Ansel Elgort) and John (also Elgort), a multiple-personality disorder situation. Jonathan's personality operates their body from 7 AM to 7PM, after which John takes over for the "night shift". When we are introduced to the duality, they seem to be coexisting nicely, leaving messages for each other as if they are friends or brothers. When John's new girlfriend (breaking the "rules of engagement" for their situation) Elena (Suki Waterhouse) complicates the strict scheduling, however, a rift emerges between the Johns that send them spiraling into conflict and potentially extinction.

I can give this film four stars because the basic idea is indeed interesting. Director Bill Oliver also gives the very basics (though no more) of character development and trying to probe the more interesting issues. The problem (and why I can't go any higher), though, is that by the end of the film it is nothing more than a simple love-triangle drama.

There were so many missteps or more interesting ways for the story to go:

-Jonathan/Jon view each other as brothers, yet only a brief scene two-thirds of the way through the film touches on that relationship angle. This needed to be done right up front to add character depth. As it is, it's tough to really feel for the dual personalities when for most of the film, they are portrayed as much as business partners as close relations.

-Viewers needed more of the "night Jon" perspective, as the entire film is told through the eyes of "morning Jonathan". I wanted to see more of Elgort's second performance, and not just on the recorded messages. Again, it's tough to feel for both parties when 98% of the time we are only truly shown one side of the story.

-The whole piece needed more conflict/action. Maybe one of the personalities could have pulled a bold move, or even some Parent Trap-esque swap shenanigans ensued. Alas, "Jonathan" plays everything pretty much right down the middle, never taking any risks or, in all honesty, creating dramatic moments whatsoever.

Overall, then, I consider "Jonathan" to be one of those great "idea films" that is mostly wasted in the execution. There are times when it failed to hold my full attention, not because the basic concept was bereft of substance but because the execution of it indeed was.

Some Holes
westsideschl27 January 2019
Different, creative storytelling. A bit of sci-fi, a bit of neuropsychological make believe. A different take on multiple personalities. Could have used some science based explanations to fill some plot holes in this illness. A bit too much jumping about w/not a lot of time spent exploring/explaining events.

Come Out, Come Out, Wherever You Are!
lavatch16 January 2019
Warning: Spoilers
Watching "Jonathan" was almost like the experience of two films in one. First, there is the story of Jonathan by day. Then, there is John by night. Two human creatures trapped in the same body. And that complex situation is left to be worked out by a psychiatrist, who is in dire need of help herself!

The film's premise was intriguing as modern science has found a solution for schizophrenia. Dr. Mina Nariman has the perfect solution by implanting a device to regulate the timetables of the two men trapped inside one body. Johnathan is the straight-laced Puritan who prefers order in his life; John is the libertine who prefer chaos. This yin-and-yang combo operates through a magic alarm clock that switches off Jonathan/John for a twelve-hour period, freeing each of them to live separate lives. They communicate through a magic video hook-up.

The only problem is that the two men must play by the rules, one of which is to strictly avoid having a girlfriend. When both Jonathan and John fall in love with a young bartender named Elena, they enter into the Twilight Zone. It is then up to Dr. Nairman to set things right.

But is the doctor capable of objectively assessing the situation and not playing favorites? When it comes to "single-body multi-consciousness," she clearly seems to have a favorite. One disturbing detail in the film is that in the past, there was apparently a third young man trapped inside the body of Jonathan/John, and the doctor decided to kill him off!

The film had excellent potential as a psychological thriller. But in the homestretch of the final thirty minutes, it began to take itself too seriously as an art film. It is difficult to imagine that many viewers find the film's ending satisfactory. In fact, most viewers could probably conceive a less pretentious ending that would have been more engaging for a film that is essentially a thriller.

Good premise, bad execution.
Khallie6 January 2019
Warning: Spoilers
I was honestly very bored throughout this movie. The character(s) barely had any depth and were not very likeable so I felt nothing for either of them. The premise was very interesting but was badly executed in the movie. I didn't like that 3/4 of the movie was just this guy talking to himself via video.

Dragonborn648 August 2020
A fascinating yet troubling concept. Many questions are left open in the end so a lot of conclusions are what the viewer decides. Is this factual or is the young man suffering from Dissociative Personality Disorder? Is the doctor being completely honest? Really well done, thoughtful & at times frustrating.

Sharing A Life With Another Can Be Challenging...
WalkdenEntertainment14 January 2020
Please Note - This film has known in some states as "Jonathan" or "Duplicate".

Jonathan (Ansel Elgort) is young man whose daily job is a draftsman. He lives in an apartment with his brother, John (also played by Ansel Elgort). But here's the thing... the two brothers share the same body.

You see, from 7am to 7pm Jonathan is in control. From 7pm to 7am, John is in control. The two communicate by using a hand held video camera, each sharing what they did while awake. This gives the other brother an understanding of tasks that are required or people they've met. They also get through life by using strict rules and with the support of their doctor who discovered the two when they were at a young age. But things between Jonathan and John become rather tense when one of them breaks the rules by dating a woman and falling in love.

The film is heavily focused on Jonathan's character. All of the interactions Jonathan has with his brother is through watching John's video recordings on their TV. As a main character Jonathan is stiff and rather strict in all areas. He also likes to keep a straight face and seems to complain a lot. For a leading character, this was a little unexpected and not always ideal. The performance by our leading actor is positive, but I found the characters in this film really bland and dull.

The film's marketing (particularly the poster) would make you think this movie is a sci-fi. Unfortunately this is not the case. Jonathan would best be classed as a drama with a touch of mystery. Thankfully there are some good mysteries to be had here which kept me going. The interactions between the two brothers is generally good to see too. The love interest in the film; however, is simply... forgettable.

The filming style attempts to be creative but it also left me dissatisfied. Shaky camera shots, an emotionless soundtrack and the odd effect of a blank, black screens for transitions to a new scene only slows the film down.

Overall, Duplicate (aka "Jonathan") brings a creative and welcome concept to the screen with a thumbs up performance by actor Ansel Elgort. But the film has bland characters and an editing style which disappointed me. The film's ending also felt weak compared the film's build up. Also, this isn't a sci-fi film despite what the film's poster would lead you to believe.

WOW! I WILL REMEMBER THIS MOVIE FOR A LONG TIME.
markwiseman5-988-10320717 November 2018
This is a "thinking-man's sci-fi movie." If you appreciate such things, you will definitely not be disappointed.

If you are in the mood for drama, with a little bit of sci-fi, this is for you. Or, you are a deep thinker - because this movie really made me stop and think - about many important questions regarding life, relationships, lies, trust, loss...

I rated this movie so highly because, as far as I know, it's really something original, something different, for a change. I'm sure there's other movies and stories out there which are similar, but I consume a lot of media and can't really think of anything like this.

I highly recommend watching this movie - and, no, I was not a part of the cast or production team. :)

So much promise but missed
paulsardinas-3689418 April 2019
Warning: Spoilers
Usually when I say a movie had me surprised by what happens next it is a good thing. In this case it was the movie lacked any logical progression. A man with multiple personality disorder is convinced his other personality is his brother. Why does he believe this? A doctor told him so in a criminal misdiagnosis. He finds out his "brother" has a girlfriend. Rather then being happy for his sibling he says he has to tell her about him or break up with her. This is a good suggestion as if he is going to be in a relationship with someone, mental disorders should be brought up. The "brother" can't do it so he breaks up with the girl. The brother than lapses into deep depression. Jonathan finds this out by finding the drugs that are being put in his body. The doctor says that is ok they have no side effects or even effect a person if they are not depressed. Again the doctor is criminally negligent. So at this point the girl wanting to know why she was broken up with shows up at the apartment where Johnathan explains his disorder. A good brother would than tell her to come by after 7. Depression solved, Relationship saved. Girl now can decide if she wants to continue with the "brother" Nope Jonathan starts dating her. They fall in love. To solve all conflicts all anyone has to do is include the other personality. They found the one girl in all the world who can love both of them. Nope they decide to keep it a secret with the girl saying at one point it is not like the other personality can walk in on us. Somehow the depressed brother loses his job at the all night law firm. Since Jonathan wants to work later hours he could ask his brother to help him out so they can both have a job. Nope. The doctor tells the depressed brother that Jonathan is in a relationship with the girl he loves and is surprised when the brother seeks vengeance. She is a horrible doctor and person. The "brother" having lost the woman he loves, the trust of his body mate, and his job considers suicide to the bewilderment of the genius doctor. She caused all this. If the personalities saw themselves as one person none of these problems would happen. Now the timer device starts shortening Jonathan's time because the "brother" is "thriving". This is after the doctor played a part in getting Jonathan fired and his girlfriend not wanting to see him anymore. The doctor says it is not the device she just replaced but it has one function that it is not doing. Jonathan's time is then shortened until he is dead. I don't expect the villain to get comeuppance in every movie. But the doctor should have a least been identified as the bad guy. By forcing one personality to become dominant she may consider this a cure but it could have been done while retaining the workable job and relationship. She literally destroyed the healthy parts of the individual's life with no regrets or acknowledgement of her role in all this. A La la land ending would have been perfect. If they saw themselves as one person with a mental disorder they could have had this life ( both in relationship with girl, both working successfully at architect office) instead they had the one as presented. It was like watching the Ranch. Stupid and morally corrupt people having bad things happen to them because they couldn't think of the right way to do things. I couldn't feel sorry for Jonathan because he had an easy way out the whole time.

Split personalities, split decision!!
vandrist6 January 2019
Trying to figure out if this is a good movie or not. It's not one of those movies that you can put in the background and watch. Concept of being able to communicate with your brother in your own body is fascinating but makes the first half of the movie feel pretty long. It is pretty different that you wouldn't be able to remember anything of your other subconscious. I wasn't disappointed with this, just not sure how to process this. Didn't captivate me the way I was hoping and I'll probably be able to forget it in about a week. Won't need to rewatch this but it's still worth a watch.

J-n-t-a-.
FallenEye13 July 2019
Warning: Spoilers
Though the idea and premise were interesting, Jonathan didn't quite know what it wanted to be. The direction it took, either didn't really lead anywhere interesting, or it did lead somewhere interesting, just via an uninteresting route.

Suki Waterhouse's character was extraordinarily one dimensional. Her response to Jonathan's condition wasn't a reaction, it was a typical, cliche and almost perfectly flat action, of a shove. You didn't feel her anger, or amazement, or confusion, or anything, to a point where, she came across as fully non-descriptive.

Also, her falling for Jonathan was, somewhat inexplicable to some extent. Had she perhaps been torn between John and Jonathan, that would've made a bit more sense, but, she just completely forgot about John, and then just like that; poof, the movie seemed to just forget about her.

Jonathan really didn't know how to get to where it wanted to go, or maybe didn't know where it wanted to go, and so it ended up feeling much longer than it actually ran because it was too busy trying to figure itself out.

This movie tried to be a drama, but failed. It tried its hand at sci-fi, and didn't really pull that off either. It took a shot at being a romance, and just abandoned that somewhere along the line.

I give this movie a 5/10 because ultimately, it ended up being half of everything it was trying to be, and failed half way through of all it was trying to be.

The way it ended too, wasn't great at all, and really exemplified just how this movie had no idea what its destination was; all it had was the time: 07:03.
