Michael Jackson‘s “Billie Jean” is a song about a man who may or may not have fathered a child with a woman he doesn’t like. One of Jackson’s brothers explained the song’s connection to Motown founder Berry Gordy. Gordy is a musical legend, but his label’s music faced some criticism from one of The Beatles.
‘Billie Jean’ was 1 of several Michael Jackson songs inspired by Motown’s Berry Gordy
Jermaine Jackson was a member of The Jackson 5. In his 2011 book You Are Not Alone: Michael, Through a Brother’s Eyes, Jermaine discussed the Motown formula. “If Americans’ brains went to Harvard, America’s talent went to Motown — and artists graduated with a lifetime’s knowledge,” he said. “‘You’re entering the finest finishing school in the business,’ Mr. Gordy told us.

Black. It is the color that absorbs all colors, the shade that holds the sun's warmth as it moves east to west. It is the color of a people, not just African but Caribbean, Middle Eastern, American, and more. But it is also music: the color at the center of the trumpet's brass ring, the shadow that fills the club when the lights get low and the party begins. Over the decades, Latin music has built a reputation for being wildly popular, no doubt in part due to its danceable nature. But what often gets lost in the conversation is the contribution that Black Latines had in cultivating the sound that, today, many of us regard as uniquely "Latin."

Sofia Vergara and Netflix have been hit by a lawsuit by Griselda Blanco’s estate over the upcoming series “Griselda.”
The suit, filed Wednesday in Florida, seeks a court injunction to block the release of the miniseries, which is currently scheduled for a Jan. 25 premiere, due to alleged unauthorized use of the family’s image and likeness.
The series, which stars Vergara as Griselda Blanco, follows the infamous cartel leader known widely as “the Godmother” as she rises through drug trafficking ranks in 1980s Miami. Vergara serves as an executive producer for the series.
While the suit does not contend with the depiction of Blanco, whose notoriety establishes her as a public figure, Blanco’s children, who act as the representation for the Blanco’s estate, allege that details surrounding their image and likeness were used in the Netflix series without consent nor compensation.

The ominous task that faced Eve Hewson when she first read John Carney’s script for Flora and Son had been accepted before she even realized it.
Sure, she knew Carney’s work, almost exclusively delivering features that baked music into the very fabric of their construction. She’d seen Glen Hansard belting at the top of his lungs in Carney’s debut, Once; Keira Knightley and Mark Ruffalo making sweet music together in Begin Again; Ferdia Walsh-Peelo embracing ’80s pop in Sing Street. She knew what was coming, but still hoped it never would.
She fell madly in love with Flora, a single mum living in a Dublin apartment block with her delinquent teenage son Max, turning each page as Flora salvaged a guitar from a skip, had it tidied up, and gifted it to Max. She followed along as the character started taking guitar lessons by Zoom with...

Norman Lear was woke before “woke” became a derogatory smear. He was woke before it was briefly appropriated in mainstream parlance as a liberal badge of honor. Before he died on Tuesday at the age of 101, Norman Lear was one of the few people alive who entirely preceded the term, which can trace its origins to as far back as 1931 as a warning among African Americans to stay vigilant for racist threats.
That was also the year that Lear, then a 9-year-old Jewish American boy growing up in Connecticut, experienced the awakening of his own social consciousness, coming across a broadcast from the antisemitic Father Charles Coughlin (considered a progenitor of hate radio). “I started to pay a lot more attention to people who were even more different in the eyes of people like Father Coughlin,” Lear told NPR in 2012.

Norman Lear was a man of modest physical stature, standing a trim 5’7″ on a good day. In terms of his impact on television — comedy primarily, but the medium as a whole — he was a giant, who belongs on any Mt. Rushmore of showrunners. He dominated an entire decade of TV like no one before or since, with hit after hit that expanded the boundaries of what could be done with the old-fashioned multi-camera sitcom format (shot on a stage in front of a studio audience), and what kinds of stories and characters audiences would accept.

This year has really been an odd (and ultimately bad) year for DC superhero films. Even when you take the quality of the products out of the picture, the box office results from each DC superhero film from this year has been abysmal. Of course, this is to be expected when you announce last year that the current crop of DC films are going to be inconsequential because a full reboot is on its way.

A year after his death on November 5, 2022, Melanie Martin, the former fiancée of late singer and rapper, Aaron Carter, filed a lawsuit on behalf of their son, Prince Carter, against the doctors and pharmacies who prescribed and provided him addictive medications. The late singer’s fiancée blamed them for his untimely death.
Martin’s lawsuit claimed that Aaron’s doctors had prescribed him three drugs – hydrocodone, oxycodone and alprazolam – without any medical justification.
The lawsuit asserts that the doctors and pharmacies knew about the singer’s mental health and psychiatric problems.
It charges that these medical professionals prescribed him inconsistent quantities of his medication that were a direct contribution to his death.
On October 27, Angel Carter, Aaron’s twin sister, posted an image of the golden plaque commemorating her brother on Instagram. The plaque showed when he was born and when he died. It also read “Beloved Brother, Son, Friend & Father of Prince Carter.
