Interesting first part.
criscrossin4 December 2019
I was completely taken by surprise by the time gap between the two places , which was interspersed in the first part, leading me to believe that there two characters with similar features, which is a common theme in hindi films. But it was not so. The fast action was good with editing. Sid was sincere, Jaq was good.

The film is sundar and risky but not susheel
oazam28 August 2017
Siddharth Malhotra is somebody I lost faith in after Ek Villain when it comes to acting and it can become as basic as it can get. The trailer had zero expectations for me thinking that this could be another box office flop of 2017.

So a sales executive named Gaurav Kapoor who resides in Miami and lives a very peaceful life. He buys a big house and holds a job at a firm. He is a neat freak as well as a perfectionist and drives a minivan must to the dismay of his girl like friend Kavya.

In another parallel story is a man named Rishi in a double role who works for an illegal agency called X who does dirty work for the government which is operated by Colonel. How these 2 people's stories collide and how it results in is basically what this film is about.

Quite to my surprise, this film is pretty decent based on its writing in some way as well as the action sequences. The first half until interval keeps the flow of the film consistent and unapologetic which made the film popcorn wise gripping but the 2nd half makes it too far-fetched and the ending just makes it too simplistically uneven which ruins a full potential script at about 25% of it.

The acting in the movie cracked eggs.

The tattoos in the movie on Siddharth's body managed to outdo his performance throughout the film.

Jacqueline Fernandez is phenomenal to look at. Bollywood films are definitely not her cup of tea and her command of Hindi is so notoriously annoying that it proves she can't act.

Suniel Shetty, what were you smoking before you came on set? He was great as a villain in Main Hoon Na and I had some expectation for this film because of him but he wasted potential.

The man who played Jignesh bhai was pretty good and he kept me laughing almost throughout the film but wish I knew the actor's name.

The music in the movie is borderline bad so that was something that made me cringe so much.

The action sequences in the film were perfectly executed especially the Home Depot fight which was quite interesting but yeah the editing needed some work because there were some scenes in the film which were shot unrealistically.

Overall, this movie is decent and does have a lot of flaws but it should do some justice to your weekend but based on my opinion, my rating for A Gentleman should fall in the one time watch category.

3/5- I like where the directors Raj and DK are going but needs more work in terms of casting.

Not best but good
Harshithnagraj4 January 2021
This is not the best movie from the director duo raj and dk still it's a one time watchable thriller. But acting is good and story line is engaging. It's a good one time watchable movie.

Good entertainment! Sidharth malhotra is super hot!
afreenarshad26 January 2018
I watched this movie on a dull afternoon and enjoyed it to the fullest. Sidharth malhotra and Jackelyn Fernandez both look super hot in the movie. Along with that the plot is interesting, there is decent humor and the locations are stunning. It's a good one time watch. The song "bandook meri Laila" is pretty good too.

Utter Non Sense Movie
abhasen28 August 2017
I have never seen so much non sense being clubbed in one movie.

Nobody knows acting in the movie, neither the lead actors nor the villain.

Would also be interested to know what the director and the script writer were smoking when the decided to make this gem.

If you are looking for a cool place to sleep for a while, only then buy tickets and go the theater just to sleep in AC, the movie has nothing to offer.

Terrible Acting, Poor Dialogue, No Story line, Its totally senseless.

About the Music, even a donkey's brays got more melody than the music of Gentleman.

Maybe the most underrated movie of the year
amit17172 September 2017
The trailers and build-up to this movie had got me really excited. But when I checked the reviews, bam! they were horrible. This literally killed my excitement! So much that I watched this movie more than a week after its release, that too after a lot of hesitation.

But once I was halfway through the movie, I started thinking about all the negativity surrounding it, and then realized that several ratings and reviews of this movie on IMDb are utter BS. Which is why I decided to write this review.

Coming to the movie, it follows the story of Gaurav - a normal office-goer, Kavya - his love interest and Rishi - a spy. It feels like a Hollywood action movie plus some unnecessary songs and dances which is a routine in Bollywood. The movie has got a lot to offer which includes the concept of parallel timelines, plot twists and a lot of action with a dash of humor.

A fun one time watch with a few problems
chaitanyanettem10 November 2017
Warning: Spoilers
A gentleman has a cool premise. It also has a cool twist where the movie makes you feel like it is a story about look alike characters but then drops in a time jump. There were even a few laugh out loud bits. The dialog and writing was above average. I also liked the music quite a bit.

The movie suffers from a slow start. It has a strong middle and second half. It is also let down by poor acting (especially on the part of Sunil Shetty and the guy who plays his chief enforcer), bad graphics and inconsistencies in the plot. The sound design was also off. You could see that they dubbed a lot of dialogues after shooting the movie. I wish more Indian movies would record audio/dialog live.

Overall I didn't mind watching it once and I found it to be a fun watch.

Disgusting Movie
twitter-3648527 August 2017
Bollywood hits another low with another pathetic movie like Gentleman. I would rather name this movie Brainless Man. This movie has nothing, Music is pathetic. Action scenes are decent. Siddharth is a horrible actor. may be he can do better as a model but acting is a wrong career option for him. Why on earth Sunil Shetty decided to make a comeback?? Seeing him acting is like seeing a fish climb a tree, too bad.

A very nice movie
shylajanagineni31 August 2017
This movie has been directed very well with unpredictable turns. The subtle humour keeps you smiling. I am not in to much of the action films. Yet I enjoyed watching this movie. The music is good. The directors projected the characters well. And the cast did a good job. Jaquelin was good with her moves and her radiant energy. Overall, a very nice movie.

Confusing first half, but it was executed very well
kutekrish20 October 2017
Warning: Spoilers
Gaurav (Sidharth Malhotra) is in Miami, US and works in Sales department of a Company. He has recently purchased a house and a mini-van. He seems like an ordinary person and parallely we see Rishi (Sidharth Malhotra 2nd role) who works with Colonel Vijay (Suniel Shetty) with others as part of Unit X - part of Indian Spy. Rishi has been doing this for quite a few years and wants to quit and parallely we are shown that one of his missions is to intercept and extract information from a person called Gaurav, who is bringing in valuable information, worth 11 million USD. While Rishi is going to meet Gaurav, **Spoiler Alert** we think that the 2 versions of the same looking actors on the scene but just now we understand that Gaurav and Rishi are the same. Rishi is approached by a member of NSC (National Security Council) and he tells Rishi that the last few missions headed by Colonel were rouge and were not approved by Indian Government. Colonel also comes to know that Rishi is going to double-cross him and he has his team kill Rishi once Rishi gets the data drive from Gaurav. But Rishi escapes and uses Gaurav's identity to travel to US.

In the rest of the movie is about how Rishi/Gaurav comes out of this mess

A Total Waste of Time and Money.
SAMTHEBESTEST27 August 2017
A GENTLEMAN REVIEW : There's always one film in an year which looks bad from trailer, worse from Songs and then turns out Worst as a Movie and A Gentleman is that one film of Bollywood in 2017. I was never interested to watch this film but as a movie buff i decided to watch the film and now after finished watching it i'm like, 'Why did i watch it? It's a complete Waste of Time and money.

Acting of both lead actors is terrible. Siddhart looks innocent as Gaurav but very weak as a goon Rishi. Jaqueline doesn't even try to do Acting. Only Good thing about both is their Hot Looks. Script Writing is Good but screenplay is terrible so nothing impresses you. One good thing about screenplay is that it is not Long, thank god this Headache ends in 2 hours. Songs were bad already but it doesn't even work in a film. Cinematography is Average so does best thing about the film because everything in the film is either Bad, worse or below average at best. Action sequences are Highly Irritating. Direction is a fine piece of Crap filmmaking. What the hell directors duo were doing? Have they really watched film after finishing the shoot? As a whole A Gentleman is a BIG BIG DISAPPOINTMENT for smart cinema lovers and also for the masses. So obviously this film has No future at box office. I strongly recommend you to Skip this film, don't even watch it on Television. I'm going with 4/10* stars, 1 extra star is given for Sid and Jaq's Hotness.

It's a movie which you don't really know what scene is going to be up next
deveshmaisuria27 August 2017
First of all this movie's direction is really choppy with how it completely changes and you don't actually get to know what scene is going to be up after and it transitions between Gaurav and Rishi every time. This movie would've been better if they start of with Gaurav and then slowly move on the action part with Rishi because I think that would've been better rather than shifting to Mumbai and then Miami all the time. The action is good to watch and it has a good comedy by Dixit. Siddharth's character was also good by playing both roles. Jacqueline is still the same with her previous films. And overall I think the audiences are going to like it but the critics are going to hate it, the fact how it's super quick and fast. So I do think people need to watch this film because it is new and the fact that films like this aren't too many in Bollywood but I can remember a film which was Bang Bang, which it also says that A Gentleman is a sequel to Bang Bang. Anyways I hope this movie does good in the box office.

Lets protest making of such horrible movies.
shwetarajkumar29 August 2017
The makers of the movie need to take a lesson from the house of Dhoom on how to make good action sequences.

The action sequences of this movie are total dehati & ghati standard.

Well, Siddharth Malhotra can try his luck in B-Grade Bhijouri movies because he is not upto the mark for Bollywood movies.

Bechara Sunil Shetty coudnt do for Siddharth what Akshay had done for him in Brothers.

Jacqueline looks the diva she always is, she is improving as an actress, the only good thing about the movie, everything else about it is a disaster.

A must watch light-hearted entertainer
purvs331 August 2017
2 hours of fun entertainment - subtle, sleek and sumptuous ! A good thrill, some cool missions and lot of straight face humour! Sidharth Malhotra nails the poles apart portrayal of Gaurav and Rishi, keeps it subtle and distinctive. Jacky is good fun. The gujju goon and Dixit deserve a special mention. Only 2 songs are part of the run so it doesn't slow down the pace of the film, never a dull moment - things keep moving in every scene. It is a complete package AND is packaged beautifully & smartly. A breezy entertainer you should not miss on ! The Dirty Martini scene & The help scene are highlights !! :)

Decent entertainment and stylish, but vulgar scenes in second half are completely and utterly unnecessary. If they removed that, the movie would've been perfect watch with family.

Why the director duo wants to be Guy Ritchie?
booon_tips30 August 2017
Here are Indian duo Raj & DK who wants to be Indian Guy Ritchie. Neither the style nor the sense of him they could achieve in this movie. The plot was similar to the James Cameron's True Lies. Our duo couldn't equalize with him either. Why should Indian directors and story writers copy? Where does our ancient wisdom gone? We are a country of story tellers and such a pathetic movies we are making.

Acting is really bad, it seems the actors took the Indian audience as a Brainless, Bidi-chaap, Rickshaw puller moviegoers who just want a relief from their daily business. Emotions are far away from our acting talents.

Dialogue delivery is so pathetic that even a dubbing actor could understand that where the weight of the voice has gone. On the top, the background score is put so high that actor seems to murmur and eating their sentences.

Cinematography? Oh boy, it looks completely digital! People are using these digital cameras and achieving a great cinematic look but here the DOP has just lit up the scene. He must have thought Indians won't understand it.

Sound Design? What could he do when everything are screwed up? Nothing!

Direction? Copy, Copy and Copy but couldn't paste it well! Actors, Money, Time and Efforts are wasted.

Agent Vinod: Bourne Again
ravenus28 August 2017
A Gentleman is another recent mainstream Bollywood movie I enjoyed a great deal. When I booked the ticket all I had in mind was "Hey, it's made by the same guys that made 99 and Shor in the City". After I booked I remembered, "Hey, didn't they also make Go Goa Gone and Happy Ending? Crap!" On the face of it, there was nothing else remotely promising. And the first 20 odd min had me regretting my decision with its wobbly pacing and stale humor. But then the movie started coming together, running multiple plot strands that (without spoilers) converged with a skillful timeline swerve that will either have you pleased or scratching your head going "समझ में नहीं आया". After that the movie is a tight and racy action comedy that stays within formula but milks it well. And Siddharth Malhotra is genuinely good in his part, exuding both toughness and self-deprecating humor. I've never seen any previous film of his but he generally seems to be cast as a depressed romantic fool a lot of the time. But here he conveys the ass-kicking buffed up hunk without it ever dipping into smug douchebag territory. The action sequences are immensely well done (including a nice riff on a Mission Impossible style heist, that includes rappelling down a glass-fronted tower building) and brutal hand to hand combat never gets old. Also the humor offers a continuous counterpoint to the violence (Amit Mistry seems to be continuing his role of Kuber from 99).

Sadly, like Jagga Jasoos, this is another cool movie that seems to be starved of an audience and likely to fizzle out pronto. Cinema on a weekend night was about a quarter full.

Finally — a Bollywood film that doesn't force its two leads to fall in love just because they're good looking!
fillerruth25 August 2017
No matter where the film is based/keeps switching to, Raj and DK really know how to celebrate Mumbai in their depiction, especially with the visuals. They had done so in Shor in the City and you can see the same vision in A Gentleman. The best action scenes are reserved for the claustrophobic bylines of Mumbai's suburbs.

The mid-point break really seals all the misplaced-ness from the ongoing narrative. It makes up for all the confusion, and without giving much away, suffice it to say that by the interval, the story starts to make sense. The double role confusion is given a massive yet impressive twist and I'm totally sinking into it.

All I'll say is the confusion revolves around identity, and it's this identity crisis that creates several plot points in the film. Whether it's about Gaurav and his project in Mumbai, or Rishi and his last heist in Mumbai, everything gets jumbled and mashed into one story.

If the first half was all over the place, the second half picks up steam, and resembles a cohesive story. Raj and DK have thrashed out how to include implausible tropes like the double role, and also having songs in the film. Not only are the songs foot-tapping, they don't hamper the story.

Save from tying up a few lose ends, the second half is dedicated largely to Kavya and Gaurav. Her parents come to Miami and want to set them up together, but she's not interested in marriage yet. However, whatever happened in Mumbai isn't leaving them. Not only is the underworld of Miami now involved, Gaurav and Kavya are the targets. Meanwhile, those two are still discovering each other.

Finally — a Bollywood film that doesn't force its two leads to fall in love just because they're good looking!

Special mention to Hussain Dalal, who plays Gaurav's friend Dixit, and Amit Mistry who plays a Gujarati don in Miami. Both bring in regular doses of humour.

The last film that had the balance between commercial tropes and an innovative narrative was Dishoom — incidentally starring Sidharth's Student Of The Year co-star Varun Dhawan. The film didn't take audience sensibilities for granted, and neither does A Gentleman. This is how we should do commercial films: good-looking lead pair, great songs (even if somewhat generic) and a story that pulls you in.

While watching the film, I noticed the audiences laughing, discussing possibilities and coming to conclusions. These are the kind of films we deserve. Even though A Gentleman takes time get into the groove of its own narrative and confusion, it makes up for it with a cracker of a second half. Sidharth as Gaurav/Rishi, Jacqueline as Kavya, and all the other supporting actors play their part well in unraveling the story for us.

The action isn't larger than life, and even comical at times, engaging even the most anti-action person (like me). The tone of the film keeps shifting between funny, serious, confusion and finally, almost like a Guy Ritchie film, ties up in the last few moments, with aplomb.

This remake of THE BIG HIT isn't one
boblipton26 August 2017
Five years ago, Sidharth Malhotra was a top spy for a super-secret covert operations group. However, he was growing weary of the morally questionable life under a commander who has, unknown to him, gone rogue. When ordered to grab some code from an American programmer, he does so, and watches in horror as his fellow spies kill the guy. He escapes and assumes the identity of the American. Now he is living his dream of la vida non-loco in Miami, with a big house and an SUV. He is about to propose to Jacqueline Fernandez, when he discovers she thinks him utterly boring and so does not. In the meantime, his boss discovers where he is and sends agents to recover the code and kill him.

Sound a bit like THE BIG HIT? It's a good premise for an action comedy, but there is something off with this version. It's almost two hours long and by the time we get up to the present day, half the movie has gone by, with a lot left to go. There's nothing overtly wrong with any individual scene, but it feels like it's half again as long as it should be, even with the obligatory Bollywood dance numbers.

Action + comedy: entertaining masala movie
vkap-1325229 December 2017
The plot and execution are quite different from your usual action or comedy movies. The movie delivers both as an action movie as well as a comedy though the former is the dominant theme. If you are just looking for a comedy, then the action may be too much for you and comedy content perhaps not sufficient. But otherwise, it is definitely entertaining and worth watching. The movie rides on Siddharth Malhotra's shoulders and he delivers well.

The biggest asset of the movie is the plot and how it unfolds in through out of sequence chunks that you have to put together in your head. That adds to some fun but also makes it more complex. So it is easier if you are able to rewind and watch.
