Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross have, in less than 15 years, established themselves as the most exciting composers working in contemporary film.
Their first score was David Fincher’s masterpiece “The Social Network.” The score was a haunting, atmospheric triumph, and it won them Oscars, an even more impressive feat given the Academy’s historic anti-rock band bias. And what began as an exclusive collaboration with Fincher soon blossomed outward – they have worked with Pixar and Ken Burns, scored a prestige TV version of Alan Moore’s “Watchmen,” and an animated “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles” movie. They can do it all, while remaining uniquely them.
They are unstoppable, too. This week “Challengers,” from Luca Guadagnino, is released alongside their soundtrack album. And they have a pair of scores still coming this year – for the big-budget Apple movie “The Gorge” and for Guadagnino’s “Queer,” starring Daniel Craig.

Like many coming-of-age directorial feature debuts, Dìdi (弟弟) is semiautobiographical, but Sean Wang’s personal background played as much of a role in literally making the movie as it did in inspiring its narrative.
The film, which was acquired by Focus after winning the U.S. Dramatic Audience Award at Sundance in January, is the opening night feature tonight at Sffilm, Wang’s hometown festival. Both fests played a role in the development of the movie, with Wang having picked up multiple grants and fellowship awards, including a 2022 Sffilm Rainin Grant, in his journey to the screen. His tenure at the Google Creative Lab before becoming a professional filmmaker also equipped him with a unique cinematic toolkit for telling a hyper-specific story about being an adolescent during social media’s adolescence.

It is a rare thing when just the studio attached to a movie can get butts in seats, but that is just what Independent Film Company A24 has done since they were formed in 2012. From humble beginnings with the Roman Coppola directed A Glimpse Inside The Mind of Charles Swan III to break out hits like Ex Machine and The Witch. More recently the studio became the first one to ever sweep the top six awards at this past years Oscars when their films Everything Everywhere All At Once and The Whale took home Best Actor, Best Actress, Best Supporting Actor, Best Supporting Actress, Best Director and Best Picture. As their latest film Talk To Me continues to put up impressive numbers at the box office, we wanted to know: What A24 releases has been your favorite? We compiled a pretty comprehensive list, but if you don’t see your favorite listed,...

Wait a minute, you might be asking, isn’t HBO Max supposed to be “Max” now? How then, am I seeing a list of HBO Max new releases for May 2023? Well spotted, dear reader. Warner Bros. Discovery did indeed recently reveal that it would be rebranding its combined HBO Max and Discovery+ streaming service as just Max. As the company notes in its press release for May though, that change doesn’t take effect until May 23. What follows is a list of everything coming to HBO Max through May 22.
The biggest releases this month are two TV series that arrive at the beginning of May. White House Plumbers is a comedic take on the infamous Watergate scandal starring Woody Harrelson and Justin Theroux. That will be followed by season 3 of The Other Two, which I personally consider the funniest show on television. Catch up now before it’s too late!

HBO Max will officially be replaced by Warner Bros. Discovery on May 23 with a new and improved service called Max. However, that doesn’t mean the service is scrimping on content until then. One of the biggest new releases of the month is the new limited series “White House Plumbers,” which will premiere on May 1. Starring Woody Harrelson as E. Howard Hunt and Justin Theroux as G. Gordon Liddy, the pair portray two real-life Watergate burglars and Nixon saboteurs who ended up destroying the very president they desperately wanted to serve.
Check out the “White House Plumbers” trailer:
The platform will head to the pitch on May 16 with a three-part soccer docuseries “Angel City.” The series goes behind the scenes with the groundbreaking Los Angeles-based professional women’s soccer team, Angel City Football Club. After challenging the High Table in John Wick: Chapter 4, Keanu Reeves will take a left at Albuquerque to join Jonah Hill for a dark comedy film. Apple Original Films acquired the rights to Outcome, a sinister comedy Hill will direct and co-write with Ezra Woods. Reeves is in negotiations to star alongside Hill in the new project.
According to The Hollywood Reporter‘s exclusive, Hill’s Outcome stars Reeves as Reef, “a damaged Hollywood star who must dive into the dark depths of his past to confront his demons and make amends after he is extorted with a mysterious video clip from his past.”
In addition to directing, starring, and co-writing Outcome, Hill will also produce the film with Matt Dines, his partner at Strong Baby. Hill recently starred alongside Eddie Murphy and Lauren London in You People, a side-splitting comedy about modern love and family dynamics encountering a culture clash with lasting repercussions.

In a competitive situation, Apple Original Films has nabbed “Outcome,” the new dark comedy directed by Jonah Hill, which is in talks to star Keanu Reeves and Hill. The movie will be produced by Apple Studios.
Reeves plays Reef, a damaged Hollywood star who goes on a long journey of the soul after he is confronted with a mysterious video clip from his past. The script was written by Hill and Ezra Woods and produced by Hill and Matt Dines under their Strong Baby banner. This will be Hill’s second narrative feature after “Mid90s,” which he made for A24 and Scott Rudin.
Last year, Netflix released Hill’s documentary feature “Stutz,” about the life and work of Dr. Phil Stutz, Hill’s therapist. Hill’s last two on-screen performances were also for Netflix – he appeared in Kenya Barris’ somewhat controversial “You People” earlier this year and in 2021 co-starred in...

Jonah Hill, in the process of building a thriving filmmaking career, and Keanu Reeves, riding high thanks to the ultra-popular John Wick: Chapter 4, are teaming up for a dark Hollywood story.
Apple Original Films has picked up Outcome, a dark comedy that Hill will direct and has co-written with Ezra Woods.
Reeves is in negotiations to topline the feature, which will also star Hill.
Outcome will star Reeves as Reef, a damaged Hollywood star who must dive into the dark depths of his past to confront his demons and make amends after he is extorted with a mysterious video clip from his past.

The deal finds a home for Outcome, which hit the town as a hot package back in November.

Fresh off its Best Picture Oscar win, A24 has announced a new disaster comedy called “Y2K” from “SNL” alum Kyle Mooney, who co-wrote the screenplay with Evan Winter and will direct.
Set on New Year’s Eve 1999, the story follows two high school “nobodies” who decide to crash the last big party before the new millennium. When the clock strikes midnight, the night gets more insane than they ever could have imagined.
For those born after 2000, there was widespread anxiety as the year 2000 approached owing to fears that a complete cyber meltdown might take the world back to the dark ages.
The ensemble cast for “Y2K” includes Jaeden Martell (“It”), Rachel Zegler (“West Side Story”), Julian Dennison (“Deadpool 2”), Lachlan Watson (“Chilling Adventures of Sabrina”), Mason Gooding (“Scream”), The Kid Laroi, Tim Heidecker (“Us”), Eduardo Franco (“Stranger Things”), Miles Robbins (“Blockers”), Alicia Silverstone (“Clueless”), Fred Hechinger (“Fear Street”) and Daniel Zolghadri...

Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross, who during their day job are the minds behind Nine Inch Nails, have announced they’ll be reteaming with director David Fincher for this fall’s “The Killer.” This is their fifth collaboration with Fincher after “The Social Network,” “The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo,” “Gone Girl,” and “Mank.”
“The Killer” is currently cloaked in secrecy, but it is based on the French comic book series by Alexis Nolent (aka Matz). The project stars Michael Fassbender as the title character (his first role since 2019’s regrettable X-Men romp “Dark Phoenix”) along with Charles Parnell, Tilda Swinton, Arliss Howard and Sophie Charlotte in supporting roles. The movie was written by regular Fincher collaborator Andrew Kevin Walker and produced by his old buddy Brad Pitt.

The prologue of “God of War Ragnarök” peaks with a dramatic moment that fans of Sony’s blockbuster video game franchise have been waiting for since it was teased at the end of the previous installment in 2018: The reveal of the saga’s big bad, a Norse deity whose obsessive desire to rip apart the fabric of fate itself has severely complicated the former God of War’s quest to scatter his wife’s ashes from the highest peak in all the nine realms and establish an emotional bond with the child he seldom refers to by name.

You might ask, how’s Jonah Hill doing these days? Because truthfully, if you lean in and think about it, we haven’t seen the actor on screen all that much since he seemingly pivoted to directing with his promising debut, “mid90s,” in 2018. In the four years since, we’ve seen him all of twice, smaller supporting roles in “The Beach Bum” and “Don’t Look Up,” a quick appearance on “Curb Your Enthusiasm,” and some small animated voice work.

Home to films like “Lady Bird,” “Eighth Grade” and “Mid90s,” A24 is synonymous with a certain brand of indie, auteur-driven coming-of-age story. The company’s latest is “Funny Pages,” the debut feature film from writer-director Owen Kline (who you might recognize as Frank from “The Squid and the Whale”). From comedy star to awards-worthy turns to becoming a director with “Mid90s,” Jonah Hill‘s career has had an interesting arc. And its next development is even more curious. Hill has a new movie out at Fall festivals, his documentary “Stutz,” a film he shot in secret about mental health and the actor’s worsening anxiety attacks. What’s more: Hill’s anxiety is so crippling that he’ll avoid promotion for the film and other films he’s a part of.

Jonah Hill says he is taking an indefinite break from promoting his upcoming films, citing mental health struggles.
In an open letter published in Deadline, the filmmaker said that he realized he needed to take a step back from public appearances while directing “Stutz,” a documentary about mental health issues and his own mental health journey.
“Through this journey of self-discovery within the film, I have come to the understanding that I have spent nearly 20 years experiencing anxiety attacks, which are exacerbated by media appearances and public facing events,” he wrote.

An impressive slate of A24 films are coming to HBO Max next month, including Oscar-winners like 2015’s “Room” and Alex Garland’s directorial debut “Ex Machina.”
A total of 28 A24 films will arrive on the streamer on Aug. 1, timed to the studio’s tenth anniversary and marking the largest collection of A24 films made available to stream on the platform. Much of the lineup consists of films released prior to 2016, when A24 was still a distribution house and not yet the full-fledged studio it is today.
Some buzzy titles such as “Everything Everywhere All At Once,” “Eighth Grade,” “Mid90s” and dozens more are not on this list because of prior deals the studio set up with other streamers. Most A24 films can be found on Apple TV+ and Showtime, who set up deals to serve as the home for a number of their digital releases in 2018 and 2019, respectively. But as those deals near a close,...

Cinematographer Ayinde Anderson set out to film the coming-of-age skate punk story “North Hollywood” with a rich, cinematic style that would be the last thing viewers would expect from an authentic cast pulling off real stunts in the community where they live.
Because he’d had so much time invested in writer-director Mikey Alfred’s world of skate parks, tubes and rails, shooting dozens of web videos with him before embarking on filming “North Hollywood,” he says, he understood inherently that he wanted “this kind of grand, Scorsese-esque, strong visual imprint.”
In filming the story of a kid who decides to defy his domineering dad (Vince Vaughn) to follow his dream of becoming a professional skater, Anderson says of “North Hollywood” – screening in the EnergaCamerimage Film Festival’s Cinematographer Debut competition – “We wanted the world to feel huge and big – as epic as these teenagers imagine it to be.”

There are countless different coming-of-age movies about kids who learn to blaze their own trail and become the best possible version of themselves, but “North Hollywood” is one of the rare few that actually embodies the courage of its convictions both on-screen and off. On second thought, make that less on-screen than off.
Written and directed by Mikey Alfred (a 25-year-old renaissance man whose prior accomplishments include founding the skateboard company Illegal Civ and co-producing Jonah Hill’s “Mid90s”), “North Hollywood” grinds out a familiar but knowing portrait of a scrawny California teen who’s forced to choose between the beaten path and his dream of becoming the next Tony Hawk. Half-sketched as its drama can be, Alfred’s feature-length fiction debut is sustained by a complete lack of poser energy and a few new tweaks on some classic tricks; come for Vince Vaughn downshifting into his indie dad phase,...

Mikey Alfred is no stranger to rejection.
When pitching the script for his feature directorial debut, “North Hollywood,” to distributors, the 26-year-old L.A. native was met with the same response from all of them: “No.”
“I didn’t even get like, ‘Yeah, we’ll hit you back,'” Alfred tells Variety. “It was just like, ‘no,’ everywhere.”
It’s not like Alfred is a complete outsider to Hollywood — he was a producer on Jonah Hill’s critically-acclaimed film “Mid90s,” appeared as himself in the HBO series “Ballers” and directed a documentary short about rapper Tyler, the Creator. But Alfred was told that the semi-autobiographical “North Hollywood” — about a teenage boy’s choice between following his dream of becoming a pro skater or going to college — wouldn’t relate to a wide enough audience.
“I categorically disagree with that,” Alfred says. “I feel that it caters to a really niche...

Jonah Hill has gotten over his decades-long battle with body insecurity and is telling all those kids out there “who don’t take their shirt off at the pool” that they are “wonderful and awesome and perfect.”
Hill took to Instagram Friday night after The Daily Mail posted a picture of him changing shirts following a recent surf session. The Oscar-nominated actor attached the article – photos and all – and, in the caption, he opened up about his longtime anxiety about body issues.
The “War Dogs” and “Superbad” star said he never felt comfortable taking his shirt off in the pool, even around family and friends, until his mid-30s, adding, it “probably would’ve happened sooner if my childhood insecurities weren’t exacerbated by years of public mockery about my body by press and interviews. Jonah Hill is stepping behind the camera again with another topic close to his heart. After his 2018 directorial debut Mid90s, which was an autobiographical look at a young boy’s coming of age amongst a group of skaters, Hill will be directing a documentary for Netflix about therapy, using his own therapist as the focus. Dr. Phil Stutz will be at the center of Hill’s documentary, which he says on Instagram will “frame therapy and Phil’s tools for dealing with life in a way that isn’t corny or cheesy.” In an exciting addition, it is reported that the film will also feature an interactive component that will be able to assist people who are unable to obtain therapy to get the tools and information they need Joaquin Phoenix, who co-starred with Hill in the Gus Van Sant film Don’t Worry, He Won’t Get Far on Foot, will...

The Academy Museum is now the proud owner of Florence Pugh’s iconic floral dress from “Midsommar.” The organization behind the Oscars was the highest bidder in an auction held by A24, with proceeds going to coronavirus relief efforts. The final bid went for $65,000, per A24’s website, though the Academy Museum declined to confirm the price point.
The May Queen dress is one of several props, wardrobe items and set pieces that A24 has been auctioning off to raise money for the Fdny Foundation, a non-profit that supports New York City firefighters and their families who have been impacted by the coronavirus pandemic. So far, A24’s auction has raised over $200,000 to benefit the hardest-hit communities in New York City.

Update (4:50pm Et): Variety has revealed it was the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences that had the winning bid for the “Midsommar” May Queen flower dress.
Earlier: When A24 announced at the end of April it would be auctioning off props from its films and television series for charity, all eyes immediately went to one item and one item alone: The flower dress worn by Florence Pugh in “Midsommar.” A24 auctioned the original 10,000-silk-flower May Queen gown on April 27 as part of its “Midsommar Hårga Collectibles for Fdny Foundation” event. The item was so in-demand that it even drew the attention of global pop stars Ariana Grande and Halsey. No wonder the flower dress then sold for a huge $65,000 during the auction, easily the most expensive sale among the “Midsommar” props.

Directing power duo Phil Lord and Chris Miller have been tapped by MGM to direct the film adaptation of “The Martian” author Andy Weir’s upcoming novel. Variety first reported the news on Friday. The project has been in the works since March, when the studio scooped up Weir’s forthcoming “Project Hail Mary,” as the book is known, for a cool seven figures.
The story centers on a solitary astronaut who’s assigned a critical mission to save the world. Ryan Gosling will produce with Amy Pascal, Weir, and Ken Kao, producer of “Mid90s” and executive producer on the Best Picture nominee “The Favourite.” According to Variety, Lord and Miller’s partnership with Pascal, which earned them an Oscar for Animated Feature as producers on 2018’s hit “Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse,” helped get the directors fast dibs on the project.

Following the recent announcement of a new novel from “The Martian” author Andy Weir, the book, titled “Project Hail Mary,” has already been scooped up by MGM for a cool seven figures. Deadline reports that Ryan Gosling will not only star but also produce the film which, like “The Martian,” pivots on a solitary astronaut who’s assigned a critical mission to save the world. Gosling will produce with Ken Kao, producer of “Mid90s” and executive producer on the Best Picture nominee “The Favourite.”
Author Andy Weir’s debut novel was “The Martian,” which famously turned into an Academy Award-nominated film written by Drew Goddard, directed by Ridley Scott, and Matt Damon in the eponymous lead role. “The Martian” was originally self-published in 2011 before being rereleased in 2014. It won Andy Weir the John W. Campbell Award for Best New Writer at the Hugo Awards.
The film version, which grossed more than $630 million around the world following a Toronto International Film Festival premiere, was released in 2015, and became a Best Picture nominee the following year. Novelist Weir followed up “The Martian” with “Artemis,” published in 2017, centered on a part-time smuggler in the first city on the Moon. Weir was reportedly developing “Artemis” into a film with directors Phil Lord and Chris Miller. Weir’s novel “Project Hail Mary” will be published in the spring of 2021 by Random House.
Ryan Gosling is, of course, no stranger to suiting up for outer space, as he previously starred as Neil Armstrong in Damien Chazelle’s 2018 drama “First Man,” in which Gosling also spent a great deal of time alone amid the cosmos. Gosling lost out on a Best Actor Academy Award nomination for the technically impressive film. Matt Damon, however, did receive a Best Actor Academy Award nomination for “The Martian.” The marriage of minds brought together by MGM for “Project Hail Mary” sets this up to be a high-profile project, and the first major film deal announcement amid the total shutdown of Hollywood currently taking place.

Jonah Hill has gone from “the kid from ‘Superbad’” to one of the best actors working today. Hell, even though “mid90s” isn’t the greatest film ever, Hill’s directorial debut is actually pretty fun and worth a watch, as well. And though he was nominated for two Oscars for his performance in “The Wolf of Wall Street” and “Moneyball,” respectively, according to Hill, his best work is in a film you probably didn’t see.

Exclusive….Developing…We’re hearing that Paramount Players creative executives Matt Dines and Ali Bell are departing the label that they arrived to in late August 2017. While these two key execs are leaving, the Paramount Players will remain in operation under the oversight of Paramount Motion Pictures Group president Wyck Godfrey.
Word is that Dines is heading to Jonah Hill’s production company and will become a producing partner there. Hill recently produced Richard Jewell; executive produced and starred in the Netflix limited series Maniac; and directed, wrote and produced the 2018 A24 movie Mid90s. At the same time, I understand Bell is heading to Andy Samberg’s label Party Over Here.
While at Paramount Players, Dines worked on such features as Nobody’s Fool and Playing With Fire. Bell during her tenure oversaw What Men Want, Dora and the Lost City of Gold and the upcoming Monster Problems which has a February 12, 2021 release date.

For Variety‘s Writers on Writers, Jonah Hill pens a tribute to “Honey Boy” (written by Shia Labeouf). For more, click here.
Amongst an array of fantastic performances in “Honey Boy,” the star of the film is the writing. Shia [Labeouf] has lived a unique life and decided to channel the pain of it into a screenplay. In the scenes with Noah Jupe, you witness an author reckoning with the complexities of a chaotic childhood with a complicated and damaged father. You watch him wrestle with the dynamic of being his father’s employer as a young boy, and see him balance the dichotomy of his light and goofy scenes at work followed by his darker and painfully real life at the motel. In the scenes with Lucas Hedges, you witness an author exposing the warts developed through that pain of his own youth as they explode to the surface and burst with an egoless pop.

Trent Reznor has already made his mark on Hollywood thanks to collaborations with David Fincher, from his Oscar-winning “The Social Network” score to “The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo” and “Gone Girl,” and now the musician has left his stamp on “Black Mirror.” The musician allowed the latest season of “Black Mirror” to remix famous Nine Inch Nails’ songs for the Miley Cyrus-starring episode “Rachel, Jack and Ashley Too.” Cyrus’ character, a pop star named Ashley O, sings peppier versions of such Reznor classics as “Head Like a Hole.” “Black Mirror” creator Charlie Brooker even had permission to change the lyrics as needed.

Talk about timing. WGA members are right now voting to authorize its WGA West board and WGA East council to implement a new agency code of conduct that includes banning packaging fees and severing agency ties to affiliated production entities. That vote closes Sunday morning. What a moment for a bombshell Wall Street Journal report that Endeavor, the parent company of Big Four agency Wme, is preparing to file paperwork for an Ipo that should hit Wall Street by year’s end. Jonah Hill has officially moved on from being the “bro comedy guy.” In Berlin with his directorial debut “Mid90s” — which at times plays like an inversion of the comedies that made him a star a decade ago — the actor-turned-filmmaker said of his earlier work, “I love those films, but I also think that if you look back at those films, a lot of what they’re showing is major bro comedy, and bro masculinity.”

It’s where my heart is, and what I want to make,” Variety reported him saying. “But at the same time I’m learning I’ve got to unlearn a lot of stuff, and maybe some of the people that liked ‘Superbad’ will...
