Same formula but a LOVELY movie.
MIssM194 February 2017
Warning: Spoilers
First review! I thought this was going to be another "Woman leaves her dream job to be with a man whom she met one week ago even though they have that chemistry and magic off the charts". You know, the typical Hallmark formula that we got used to but yet we somehow love.

It wasn't. The plot is quite similar to "Summer love". A woman finding herself or finding that she wasn't living the life she wanted. - And yes, they also share the leading guy, Lucas Bryant - The romance is a secondary part of the plot. Important, but not THAT important.

Rose has to come back to the farm she grew up to help her parents when things are not going great and she begins to appreciate what she didn't when she was younger. Back in L.A she had a perfect life, a job she enjoyed, and a boyfriend who cares about her - not the annoying, nosy guy - but she learns something is missing and that is the movie's main theme: the feeling of being at HOME. And no, they didn't give the cliché "Home is where the heart is" line but another lovely quote that is 100% true. You'll have to see to find out which it is.

Both leads did an amazing job - Fiona Guberlmann's character Rose was adorable and likable - Lucas Bryant did a good job as well, but I hope to see another film where he screams or get mad at someone, because I've seen him in this movie and "Summer love" and he is playing a character with the same attitude. Calm, dedicated to his job. - He totally win me over with a simple word: "Morning" in that rough voice tho - Even Rose's parents were adorable.

I truly enjoyed this movie, the plot made sense and even though it's the same formula, you'll still like it.

As Judy Garland's persona Dorothy Gale would say "There's no place like home!"
Ed-Shullivan26 November 2021
Light viewing, simple story, with a family comes first theme, and a new romance to boot. Tugs at your heart strings if you are the type that believes in your own family and you remember both the good times and the bad times. It's an inspirational film with a warm and romantic tone to it. Both Mrs. Shullivan and I quite enjoyed it.

I give it a 7 out of 10 IMDB rating,

Beautiful tulips
TheLittleSongbird29 December 2022
2016 was rather hit and miss for Hallmark, which was hardly surprising as all the 2017-2021 Hallmark batches (that were seen before this year's) were very up and down as well. It boasted some good and more films, such as 'Love in Paradise', 'Love on the Sidelines', 'Summer Villa' and 'Journey Back to Christmas'. But also misfires, such as 'Unleashing Mr Darcy', 'Ms Matched', 'The Convenient Groom' and 'A December Bride'. And everything else ranging between mediocre and pretty decent.

'Tulips in Spring' is thankfully closer to being one of the hits and good and more films. Not one of the best of the 2016 Hallmark films by all means, but a long way from being one of the worst and really appreciated its honest good intentions and heart. It is also much better than all the films officially part of the Spring Fling block for 2016, none of the three in question did much for me, and feels more like a Spring Fling film than them. So 'Tulips in Spring' is recommended.

Sure it is formulaic, which was not unexpected. Pretty much all Hallmark films are, even some of those that attempt something different.

Also would have liked more spark in the leads' romantic chemistry, the chemistry is hardly non existent but it is a little too low key for my tastes and isn't focused on as much as the family storytelling. Do agree with those that say that one plot strand comes too out of nowhere and is handled in a rushed manner.

Having said all of this, there is a lot to like about 'Tulips in Spring'. Fiona Gubelman and Lucas Bryant are both engaging and likeable leads and it was easy to relate to Gubelman and what she was going through. Iris Quinn and Kevin McNulty play their parental roles with sincerity and brio. The character writing was fine, did appreciate that none of the characters were too perfect and that nobody's flaws were exaggerated. Have seen both extremes in a lot of Hallmark films and it is becoming something of a bugbear.

Most of the writing was fine, it flows naturally and doesn't become too mawkish or cheese ridden. The film goes at a gentle but not dull pace, and is light hearted in some places in a way that is unforced and fun and genuinely heartfelt in a poignant way in others. The family drama is relatable and rings true. The production values are fine, especially the scenery, while the music doesn't overbear or feel repetitive.

Summarising, falls short of greatness but a lot to admire. 7/10.

Cut-throat Tulip Competition! 6.5 Stars for me!
huggibear15 May 2017
It's about a spring flower! A tulip is a pretty spring flower. When they bloom like a rose, they can be very beautiful! I just watched this movie on 5/13/17, a few days ago and I'm assuming this movie might have come out last Spring since it is a 2016 movie. It's nice to see spring movies in Spring. I like when movie channels match their seasonal movies up with the correct season. Good job Hallmark! This movie wasn't one of my favorites, but the tulip factor made it different and that's what matters to me. Movies don't have to always be perfect when they are made for TV. It was just OK to me, a little above average, but worthy of one watch.

The main character is a tulip
MickyG33310 April 2023
6.4 stars.

I am slightly fascinated by all the tulips strewn about the farm and I wonder which ones are real and aren't. It's obvious the ones in the large fields are real, but around the house and stuff, and in the hothouse, I have doubts. And why am I commenting about the flowers and whether or not they are real? It's because the flowers are the highlight of 'Tulips in Spring'. They could have made a ten minute short and it would be sufficient to capture the full essence of the film, at least with a condensed version we wouldn't be subjected to the 80 additional minutes of filler.

I like all the actors, they are all very wonderful and charismatic and gel nicely. The lead actress is generally given these dull roles and I'm at a loss for why Hallmark leaves her with such washed out roles. The lead male is perfect for the character type he portrays, although he would be a better cowboy with a serious and quiet mystique. Some girls melt for this type of country boy.

I love the scenery around the tulip farm and all the ins and outs of farming life, but somehow this film came up as bland as a bowl of plain oatmeal.

Pretty flowers - the romance is less colorful
phd_travel11 August 2017
The tulips are pretty. That's the best thing about this Hallmark romance. The struggling business thing is very familiar as an interior decorator returns to her family's struggling tulip farm. There is a rather lame competition going on. And the romance is kind of lame - maybe the leading man is a bit laid back. There isn't much chemistry between the leads and is a lot less colorful than the flowers. One highlight is Kelly Rowan of O.C. as the interior decorator boss who lets her go home to tend to the tulip farm in the midst of a big interior decorating project.

Not a must watch but pleasant.

Tulips in Spring

Fiona Gubelman is always good value in these Hallmark films, and this was a nice, sweetly told tale.

It doesn't have the usual Hallmark subplot involving friends etc, and is actually all the better for it, allowing perhaps for more character development for the main female lead.

It whizzes along at a decent pace, and although the chemistry wasn't overly strong between the leads, was enjoyable enough viewing.

Rose must decide between a successful job in LA or helping her family's farm.
mstiechick22 April 2017
A sweet springtime Hallmark movie. The photography and location (Vancouver) make it extra special. Lucas Bryant hits it off as the leading hunk. It's the typical Hallmark formula that you know and love. Rose must decide where home is once she has kicked off her successful business in the design industry.

Not much here to see

Warning: Spoilers
Pretty unbelievable romantic interest here, with the most passionate love object being the villainess... and the heroine's dropped romance back in LA just came out of nowhere. I cannot recommend this, no matter how pretty the tulips.

Existing IMDB Reviews don't do this one justice
mzmmtdzxd15 April 2023
My wife and I pretty much exclusively watch Hallmark movies (probably 6-10 a month), so I've got a lot of watching experience in this area. Hard to believe no one has mentioned the following:

  • The female lead cheated on her boyfriend. Not only that, but the guy she cheated on was basically doing her job while she was away helping her parents.

  • The job he was helping her with was literally the most important thing in her entire career. At the end, her boss loved it and she didn't even bother thanking him or acknowledging this in any way.

  • The guy she ended up with (and had zero chemistry with during the movie) basically initiated the cheating sequence, even though he knew she had a boyfriend.

  • Just to sort of reiterate, the guy she cheated on had no real flaws which the cheating could subsequently be blamed on. He was a handsome and caring dude.

  • The writers got out of this predicament by having him initiate the breakup with her. She's obviously thrilled and everyone walks away ok.

Beyond the above, there are many other implausible aspects to the script. I simply do not believe most of the reviews for this film.

Beautiful setting & music
SunnyDaise10 March 2021
The visual setting / color is bloomin' marvellous and the instrumental-only soundtrack is a notch up from the usual boppy feel-good movie pop songs. The plot is standard Hallmark but includes more older characters in this cross-generational movie that every age can watch.

Hallmark at it's VERY best
msarajoy26 July 2020
This has to be my most favourite Hallmark movie (and I have watched a lot!). I wish I could give it more stars!!

The main story arc and the sub plots of this movie are all amazing and fit so well together.

I don't think I have watched Fiona Gubelmann (who acts as Rose) before but I was impressed with her fantastic acting skills. Many other Hallmark lead actresses should take a leaf from her page and learn that to be attractive, they do not need to smile 95% of the movie - which frankly, is sickening to the point of diabetes.

I also really like the character development of Rose as a person. She is independent enough to strike out on her own but knows where her roots are. At the start she gives this epic fail speech to the crew but within minutes, we see her so loved by the family client. She is neither an unnaturally raving success nor is she a failure. She is a real character we can all relate to. It was lovely to watch her talk to the tulip she planted - something about planting it with friends to encourage it to grow. I would say however, that her work skirts are absurdly short for any woman who wants to be taken seriously in a work place.

Lucas Bryant is an equally amazing actor. I watched him in 'Summer Love' where he was also incredible as the romantic lead actor. He is so attractive with an even mix of rugged and urban. If I had to dream up a boyfriend, it would be very much like him! Hunk is really the right word to describe him. I wish he would appear in more Hallmark movies! As Tom, he is ethical and reliable. The man of the show literally.

Together, their chemistry in this movie is off the charts!! The way they looked at each other and the kiss on the porch. WOW. The longing, the tentativeness, the dialogue so well delivered. Best Hallmark kiss I have seen in a very long time.

And I love their dialogue throughout the show. After watching shows like Flip that Romance where the dialogue between the two leads was so toxic, the conversation between Rose and Tom in this show is beautiful. They gently tease each other with no quarrelsome note and no attempt to one up each other. Unlike the leads in Hometown holiday, Rose and Tom have really deep and meaningful conversations and when they talk with each other, you get the sense that these are two adults having a respectful but heartfelt dialogue where they really get to know each other, where they come from and who they are.

Thank goodness there was no petty and childish misunderstanding in this movie. And since I have had enough of scenes where one cleans a stain off the other persons face as part of a scriptwriters absurd attempt at closeness, I thought it was brilliant that when Tom pointed out that Rose had a stain on her face, instead of reaching in and cleaning it off himself, she made a second stain on the other cheek and he just laughed it off like it was so adorable but he knew it wasn't for him to touch her face at that point in time. And she did not throw a hissy fit when she must have realised it - phew.

Near the end of the show, Tom comes up and wraps Rose up tightly in his arms. Omg, we gals should all be so lucky! And she does what we would love to do, snuggle into his arms hahaha. The tenderness between them is so real and something we all aspire to if we haven't already found it in our own lives.

Then there is the sub plot between Rose and her father. That is a relationship we watch healing before our eyes and it is a thing of beauty to watch. A real tear jerker actually, especially when her father tells her how proud he is of her in the hot house and she breaks down and cries - that was a really convincing moment by the way, kudos to Fiona Gubelmann! For any of us who have a strained relationship with a parent, this show would appeal to us on that level.

And Rose's parents are completely inspiring to watch. The love they have for each other comes across really beautifully. They really live up to the marriage vows of 'for better or worse, in sickness and in health.' Through the uncertainty of losing their tulip farm and with his broken leg, their love endures and flourishes. Watching them makes me want to believe in marriage again!

If you only have time to watch one Hallmark movie, I respectfully suggest you watch this one. I absolutely loved it from start to finish.
