That was pretty lame
deloudelouvain17 April 2018
The first half of the movie was a bit mysterious, it kept me interested but without being thrilled. And from then on it's all going downwards. The acting was sometimes poor even though the actors are known for better. The story is just plain boring at one point, even laughable. All that spiritual crap is too stupid for words. I wonder if people that are into spiritualism will like this movie because it isn't great. The special effects and CGI's could have saved this movie, or at least made it a little bit better, but there it's where it even get worse. It looked like a sixteen year old did it behind his computer on a day he was bored and had nothing else to do. The Ashram is just not a good movie, even not for spiritual people.

Romance & Magic
omendata29 March 2018
If you believe in Spiritualism and higher things this film will be right up your street.

Good acting and a nice little story with some breathtaking CGI scenery. I would describe it more of a Fantasy Romance than Scifi. Its a small scale production with a big heart and deserves a view if you want more than action , CGI and thrills but want to ponder on the transcendence of the human condition and the marvels of the cosmos and the natural world.

Alternatively , if you are female you will appreciate the romance story and I did too but then again I am a bit of a big girls blouse when it comes to lost love and kindred spirits - A fine little movie that will move your heart and soul just a little which isnt bad in this day and age of crash , bang , wallop movies.

New Age stuff + The Osho movement = The Ashram
ravi-dadlani3 August 2018
Warning: Spoilers
An attempt to make an exceptional film falls flat on its face. This isn't about spirituality but 'New Age' mumbo jumbo. And yes there's a lot of that going around the world and especially India. The good stuff: 1. The movie starts well and begins to get lame and predictable as you go on. 2. The location was fabulous. There are ashrams in such places in India so that was believable but the mountain where the guruji stayed was terrible. The problems: 1. The script was poorly written. The plot was strange and unexpected in a bad way. There was little characterization. 2.The acting: was quite average. Sam Keeley does a dumbed-down Keanu Reeves. Hera Hilmar was average and you just can't understand her existential crisis. At times it feels shes the one with the brain tumor. The guruji acted the part though strangely he doesn't appear in the cast list on IMDB- A miracle? go figure. 3. CGI effects could have been much better.

In summary a potential A-lister becomes a movie you can watch on a weekend when you have nothing else to do.

Stupid
Jithindurden14 April 2018
Pretty stupid overall and the Guruji looks very much like Osho which tells you a lot about why this film is made. It's unbelievable they got some amazing actors in this and none of them has anything to do. It did keep me intrigued for some time but it gets more and more stupid as it goes on. West doesn't have really any idea what exactly Indian spirituality is and there are a lot of versions that get mixed up here, it's all a scam anyway the least these filmmakers could do was be compatible as these scammers in making you believe in it. The visual effects and editing are the parts that could have actually made an impact in a lot of scenes, alas those are also done very poorly.

Will not suit everyone, but I enjoyed it...
JamesMcIrish20 November 2020
Solid 7...

I was actually pretty sceptical going in...but this was a film that didn't cliché out like I expected it to, to its credit, and I ended up enjoying it. It's a bit melodramatic in places, but it's just the right side of 'not too saccharine-sweet'. On a fairly under-developed topic too, in cinematic terms.

The visuals and soundtrack are a big part of the overall score. The stunning scenery in this film, while only being backdrop, really made me want to go back to the Himalayas. Even getting robbed by the taxi-bike guy was like a rose-tinted Indian tourist promo... albeit one where the moral of the story is either, "don't over-tip the baba" or "don't flash your wad of tourist cash in public"...possibly both. Take note, fellow travellers...

The sound track is great. I actually initially came here just to check whether the final track was Nitin Sawhny or not, but decided it was worth adding a review, since there aren't too many at this point.

It's definitely a romance/fantasy/sci-fi blend, so a bit smooshy overall, but it's nice to see the Buddhists getting a look in with the hollywood treatment, but without the obligatory "kung-fu shenanigans" - for a change.

Bad would be an understatement..
nimit7630 March 2018
Well, the film is not bad but it is so bad that you might want to put your fingers in your eyes into the back of your head and swirl it around while watching this piece of amateur trash. Watch it with your girlfriend or spouse and you might end breaking up or a divorce, respectively.

Was nice.
dkooloperator6 October 2021
Yeah story line and script was not that very good.

But, Movie Makers have done a great job in making.

Was a good reach to Yoga, Mysticism and Spirituality.

However India has not even touched this wonderful concept of their own heritage which can be greatly remarkable. Actually, It is not sci-fi.

Indian Makers should learn from these Makers.

A film in need of acting
drdennisblue16 March 2020
The plot has a potentially intriguing storyline but the acting, especially that of Jamie, is terrible. This could have been a very good movie with just a couple of casting changes. Scenery is awesome.

Outstanding and Oh So Different!
skip-9875631 March 2018
What an Incredibly beautiful and interesting movie! What a change from the usual sci fi or action, or murder movies! I found All the actors to have brought such heartfelt qualities to their roles, especially the lead male ,the Guru, and melissa leo...The Guru was portrayed with Great Realism and actually show a Small glimpse of the awesome and mind shattering power a true Master would possess..A beautiful story with a magical, otherworldly vib throughout and a beautiful ending!

Even though naive and predictable at some points, still paints an unique twist on a star crossed lovers, and contributes to the spiritualistic movement.

A fantastic mythical journey film - very entertaining story and a gem. Acting is excellent
filmtravel10116 February 2021
This is a gem of a film that at first I thought would be another cheesy wanna be Celestine Prophecy but instead it was a unique mystical journey of a film with a nice romantic twist. It reminds me of What Dreams May Come or other James Redfield books but of course this film is low budget yet the overall story is both entertaining with a lovely message that is refreshing with a touch of a magical spiritual journey.

Kudos to the writers and director and the special effects which gave it a nice extra touch to show the deeper elements of meditation. I can speak from experience after spending lots of time in India and meeting many gurus and this guruji character was probably the highlight of the film. Yes I agree he mostly looks like Osho with the white beard and bald head yet probably most do not realize that it is a common look for elderly gurus but the other elements from the actor really transcend and bring forth the realism of a Teachers allure. And surely with a higher budget the film would have been a better with higher end vfx but it works regardless and the main actors were excellent. But the only odd part was seeing Kal Penn was hard to swallow yet he did a great job as a sannyasi disciple. The location was breathtaking fantastic and it was wonderful to see the story element of a hero's journey of the main character which brought forth some depth to the film along with the background story of enlightenment and twin souls. It is probably not suitable for most Westerners that probably are unable to relate to the spiritual aspects of the story and the film could have delved deeper into the other supporting characters but the pacing was good enough to make it enjoyable without being too heavy like some other spiritual films.

This film deserves better ratings and surely will be a classic with time. A solid 8 and hope to see more films from this writer/director

This is now my favourite film.
emadleiman27 September 2018
I don't want to spoil all the the surprises this film has in store for you. It's a must watch film. The story is very believable and will really make you think as well as entertain. Simply put, this is now my all time favourite film. The story is absolutely engaging and the ending was the best happy ending you could imagine. It will make you have tears of happiness.

I just can't figure out why at the time of this review the film had only 5 star rating when it deserves a 10 star one.

The Ashram has a quiet magic
tamsin-61-15186117 November 2019
A lovely film that is not trying to be more than it is but that quietly carries the audience along on a spiritual path that reminds one of the magic that is all around us. Unpretentious, un-American, lovely film. Wish I had been part of the making of this film.

Too many advertisement by MX player, unable to watch
handsomevarun28 August 2020
There should be a Limit of advertising. Every 5 seconds banner advertising at bottom of the screen. When you have launched series on such OTT which doesnt support smart tv. Then atleast make sure they don't give stupid add in centre of the screen or buttom of the screen. I kept closing ads it's keep popping up. I had to close the series itself. What a shame. Nothing to do with series I was liking the first 10 mins. But couldn't watch further.
