It's not the sorority that's deadly
mgconlan-115 May 2017
Warning: Spoilers
On May 6 Lifetime presented the "premiere" of something called "Deadly Sorority," an intriguing tale of skullduggery and murder centered around the student body and faculty at — no, not Whittendale this time, but Barclay University. It begins with Samantha Blake (Greer Grammar, Kelsey Grammar's daughter) and Kristina Roberts (Emilija Baranac), best friends from high school, attending Barclay together — only their friendship ends almost as soon as they reach Barclay because Kristina has her heart set on pledging the school's most exclusive sorority, Delta Nu, while Samantha shows up at the sorority house but its principal student leader, Jubilee Swan (Chloe Babcock), takes an instant dislike to Samantha because she's not from a rich family and she shows up with a sarcastic attitude that indicates how little Samantha thinks of sorority culture and all the snobbery and bullying that goes along with it. So Samantha suffers the loss of her best friend when Jubilee orders Kristina not to have anything to do with Samantha any more on pain of expulsion from Delta Nu. Kristina starts dating the Big Man on Campus, Paul Riveria (Ross Linton), whose huge, hunky, athletic body is matched only by his male ego and total disinterest in tying himself down to just one girl — only within weeks Kristina has broken up with Paul, telling him she's landed someone better. We only find out later who the "someone better" is.

Meanwhile, writer Rolfe Kanefsky and director Shawn Tolleson actually show us some of the "education" in higher education for a change — all too many college movies make universities look like elaborate summer camps — including a media class taught by Amy Thomas (Moira Kelly), who for some reason we don't at first understand takes a dislike to Kristina almost instantly; and an English class taught by Justin Miller (Steve Bacic), who is actually married to Amy but doesn't let that stop him from seducing and having brief affairs with just about every female student at Barclay who will hold still for him. The film begins with the mysterious disappearance of Tanya Brown (Rachelle Gillis) towards the end of the previous semester; Tanya was a Delta Nu member and also one of Miller's previous student girlfriends. Then Lifetime flashes one of their usual "time" titles — "Four Months Later" (a bit of a surprise since I had assumed that we would flash back rather than forward) — and we see Samantha and Kristina arrive at Barclay together, Kristina get accepted by Delta Nu while Samantha gets blackballed, and then a few weeks later Kristina is mysteriously killed in a car crash. The police at first write it off as an accident but later become convinced that Kristina was murdered — and they're convinced Samantha did it out of jealousy over losing her friendship to Jubilee Swan and the Delta Nu crowd. I've commented on at least two previous movies with "sorority" in their titles — "Sorority House," a 1939 RKO "B" written by Dalton Trumbo and directed by John Farrow (Mia's dad), which didn't include out-and-out murder but had some nice little bits of social comment about the snobbery and cliquishness at the heart of the sorority system; and "Sorority Murder," a previous Lifetime production that if anything painted an even grimmer portrait of the sorority system than this one did — indeed, "Deadly Sorority" is something of a misnomer as a title because the peril Samantha is in has very little to do with the sorority as an institution.

gave it a chance
SnoopyStyle26 February 2018
Samantha Blake (Greer Grammer) and her best friend Kris Roberts arrive at Barclay University. Justin Miller (Steve Bacic) is an english professor and Amy Thomas (Moira Kelly) is the girls' history professor. Kris wants to join a sorority but Sam is not wanted. Four months earlier, sorority girl Tanya Brown went missing. The sorority girls led by Jubilee Swan force Kris to distance herself from Sam. Sam's only friend is her T.A. Victor. When Kris is murdered, police detective Lopez suspects Sam.

I tried to give this a chance. It's a cheap TV movie about sorority murders. I'm grading on a curve here. I try not to have big expectations. The murder mystery is fine at first. Greer is a good lead although Kris should be more ditzy. The initial problem comes from detective Lopez. I don't mind that she's wrong about Sam but she should not tell the suspect about her suspicions. She is a horrendous detective. A good detective would pretend to be on Sam's side while privately investigating her. There is also Kris' murder where the perp is obviously a woman. It does come with a misdirection but it would be better without any directions which would allow for many more suspects. There is also a drugging but it makes little logical sense other than simply contributing to the misdirection. It's pushing too hard at that direction and why would the perp drug Sam only to leave her behind. I gave this every chance but there are too many problems.

Moderately diverting who dunnit.
phd_travel28 July 2017
2 best friends go to college one pledges the other doesn't. The one who pledges ends up dead. There are lots of suspects - the casual boyfriend, the evil sorority sisters, the lecherous professor or his jealous wife (Moira Kelly). It's moderately diverting to the suspicion point to one then the other suspect. The heroine is played by Greer Grammar and she is is quite pretty and sweet. The daughter of Kelsey but don't confuse her with her sister Spencer - they are quite different looking.

At least it's not one of those slasher type shows. More of a who dunnit.

Unbelievably embarrassing
nitro7220 April 2019
Unbelievably embarrassing "movie" from a director who can't direct, a writer who can't write, and actors who can't act; filled with eye-rolling conveniences, an overly predictable "mystery", & extras laughably trying to act.

Quite good

Warning: Spoilers
This was one of the more enjoyable LMN movies. A pretty good whodunnit and to tell the truth I suspected the history teacher almost to the end and to my surprise I was wrong! Good acting by Grammer too btw! As for the two friends Samantha and Kristina I thought the former was a kind hearted loyal friend and the latter an ambitous sl*t who trampled on her childhood friend just to get in the in crowd not to mention to have an affair with a married sexoholic professor!!! Frankly Sam needn't have shed any tears for her traitor friend!!! Kristina played with fire and deservedly burned!

A fairly good murder mystery from LMN
vbacon-111-57832915 January 2021
When reviewing LMN movies I tend to use the word formulaic a lot. I'm debating writing a software program that could generate plots en masse. :)

So yes, this follows a standard LMN formula but it does manage to make things somewhat interesting so I'll give it a 7.

I'm usually easy on LMN actors because, well it's LMN. But this one was noticeably worse than than average. Chloe Babcock (Jubilee) was oddly robotic. The professor couple was sub-par.

And then there was Greer Grammar. I'm harsh on Actors who obviously got their chances because of their parents (Kelsey Grammar in this case). Greer is definitely not ready for prime time. I don't see her getting very far in the industry. BTW, why would you go by the odd middle name of Greer instead of her formal first name - Kandace?

Became Less and Less Realistic as the Film Progressed
Uriah4321 December 2023
This film begins with an attractive young woman by the name of "Tanya Brown" (Rachelle Gillis) talking to an unidentified person in her college library and then, when walking back to her dorm, being attacked and never seen again afterward. The scene then shifts to 4 months later with a young woman named "Samantha Blake" (Greer Grammer) and her best friend from high school "Kristina Roberts" (Emilija Baranac) beginning their first day of college together and subsequently petitioning to join a nearby sorority. Although Kristina is accepted into the sorority, Samantha is rudely rejected for reasons she doesn't understand. Not only that, but she continues to be treated in a hostile manner--to the point that even Kristina feels pressured into distancing herself from her. In spite of this, Samantha continues to push back against this sorority until something terrible happens and she finds herself as the prime suspect in Kristina's murder. Now, rather than reveal any more, I will just say that this film started off rather well but, as the film progressed, it seemed to become less and less realistic--before finally ending on a rather ridiculous note. That being said, while I don't consider this film to be terribly bad, the lack of realism was simply too difficult to ignore, and I have rated it accordingly. Slightly below average.

Good Plot
Kristamw10 March 2019
Writing Quality/Character Development: This is one of Lifetime's stronger story lines with no dull moments and an interesting plethora of characters that keep you guessing. There is actually quite a bit of character development among many of the characters, which helps push the story forward. Values: Pursuit of truth and justice Content (sex, language, & violence): No sex, mild infrequent language, minimal violence. Scare factor/Suspense: The scare factor is pretty tame as this is more of a mystery with Sam investigating her best friend's murder. The end reveal of the killer turns a little tense, but it is short-lived. Overall, pretty good plot with a strong main character who refuses to let anyone prevent her from uncovering the truth.

Good ending
pumping_iron-120 March 2022
Okay! I give this one props for a surprising ending. The acting was really bad. The leading character, Samantha, acted like a psycho most of the time. So it isn't surprising that the police viewed her as a prime suspect. But the ending made up for the bad acting.

Welcome to Barclay University!
lavatch12 April 2019
Warning: Spoilers
One can only imagine what is going through poor Samantha's mind when she begins school at Barclay University and is probably paying $70,000 a year in tuition. Her welcome to the college is harassment from the Delta Nu sorority, despite the fact that she was not even accepted during pledge week.

In an early scene in the film, Samantha is kidnapped, blindfolded, and held at knife point by the girls from Delta Nu. And that is the least of her problems when she is accused of killing her best friend Kristana, who was accepted into the sorority.

The instructors of Barclay are also a creepy lot, especially the nasty History teacher, Amy, who takes an instant dislike to Samantha. Amy is married to the English teacher, Justin, who has had such extensive problems with seducing his female students that he is in a treatment program.

The students at Barclay are so unfriendly that they could be extras from "The Night of the Living Dead." But the final straw has to be the utterly incompetent police, who finger Samantha for the murders.

That leaves Samantha on her own, helped only by her friendly TA Victor, to solve the crimes taking place at Barclay U.

As a murder mystery, the filmmakers do a good job in setting up possible candidates for the criminal on the loose, which include nearly everyone in the Barclay community!
