New bells and whistles, same rock-solid recipe

You've gotta hand it to the writers for keeping to the formula of the '80s series. We don't actually see the robot until the very end of this pilot, and that's just how the original operated from week to week. I think there's promise in that.

And they certainly spared no expense on the CGI budget. The battle scenes with the lions are dynamic and Voltron itself looks pretty cool. I think matching pilots to lions via personalities was a nice twist, and it flows nicely with the lighthearted tone. The word of mouth on this series is impressive and I for one am intrigued.

Plot; Five young space explorers find themselves swept up in the search to find five legendary robots before an evil galactic emperor and his armada do.

Netflix reboot of the 80s 'toon features gorgeous animation and some really nice touches (such as the five lions each having a sort of disposition that matches up with that of their human pilot), but the tone is often too jokey, broad and on the nose (did we really need a fart joke?), robbing it of its full dramatic potential. Still, more works than not, and I'm intrigued enough to continue on to the second episode.

The start of an amazing journey

The begining of something great. Here you find a remake of a series that have been done multiple times and yet brings a wave of fresh air while putting together in such a nostalgic amazing way. This brings a feel of how the show where in the 90s yet being new in a lot of new great ways. Nice visuals, nice designs and a variety of characters that makes it so interesting. The cast contains such a colorful palet of variety in terms of nationality and personality and relationships. You got the trio of goofs with 2 genius and what seems to be a very sociable dufus we will grow to love, then a duo of best friends that wants us to know more about them, a poc princess (so nice to see !) that seems so original in her concept and her advisor that will be a funny comic relief mix with wiseness. This episode sets up the setting in an interesting way and makes us want to be there with them, live the stories with them. Personally already a very nice fan of the tropes you can find in the characters but that will still surprise us in many ways, we can already tell.
