Featured review
My country's worst cartoon by a long shot. One of the worst cartoons of all time, in fact.
Having come across the other negative review of Diddy TV last year, I gave the show the benefit of the doubt. After watching the show's first four episodes, I take that back. I have to agree with badtoonreviewer on what they think of the show. As someone who lives in the UK, I was never really a Dick and Dom fan, and this show solidifies that for me.
When watching those episodes, I was expecting it to take 40 minutes, but it actually took an hour. Make of that what you will, but more to the point: The sketches are, to put it one way, painfully unfunny. The show relies heavily on gross-out, cheesy jokes, and lousy slapstick for its jokes, and not once are instances of this ever funny or even disgusting; they're just tedious. Not helping is that most of, if not all of the sketches are formulaic and thus they get old quickly.
Bees or No Bees from Misty (the first episode of the show) is rather gratuitous, as Ethel doesn't do anything wrong to deserve being swarmed by bees. This could've worked if she was a complete jerk (though, to be fair, that would probably make the show worse), but she doesn't do anything remotely wrong. I find it hard to laugh at that sketch for that reason.
The worst joke in the show by far is this: "I'm a lot like cheddar cheese, because I'm mature... and tasty. Hehe." This is hands-down incredibly unfunny. The line is very poorly-written, the delivery is lifeless, and the sketch this comes from just progresses as if nothing had happened. Some jokes are so bad that they're good, but this doesn't even fall into that category.
There are also several instances of obnoxious yelling and unnecessarily loud sound effects that make the show hard to sit through at times. The worst example of yelling is in the Collectamups sketches (though 24 Seconds in A&E comes a close second)... how do I describe this?
THE ANNOUNCER IS YELLING EVERY SINGLE WORD IN A WAY THAT IS BOTH GRATING AND OBNOXIOUS, TRYING WAY TOO HARD TO SOUND SUPERIOR, AND IT REIGNS SUPREME AS WHAT IS PROBABLY THE WORST VOICE ACTING I'VE EVER HEARD IN A TV SHOW!!!
Sorry for that, but I'm serious. It's THAT bad. Moving on...
Visually, the show looks terrible. The CGI is poorly-rendered, the effects are cheap (they seriously seem like stock effects), and the green-screening of the puppets is quite tacky; it's only noticeable if you look close enough. Also, when Larry and the celebrity that appears in each episode are seen watching Diddy TV, their heads are literally on top of the couch... yeah, you heard me right. I'm not sure if I would call the show's visual style a mess per se, but it's nonetheless awful-looking.
I would say the songs in Diddy Pops are catchy, but I can't even say that when the songs aren't even original. They're just covers of pre-existing songs, so doing so would basically be a waste of time. As for the theme song, it's average and not really memorable if you ask me.
Now, there is one slightly funny moment: "In just.9,789 individual parts, your collection will beautifully build until you've either generated fission or forgotten the basic safety rule." While not hilarious, the.casual delivery of the line did get a small giggle out of me. However, this joke doesn't compensate for how unfunny the show generally is.
VERDICT: Diddy TV is an abysmal show with essentially nonexistent humor, repetitive writing, voice acting that more often than not gets loud and grating, and a very cheap animation style. Seeing as how I can't give credit to the show for having catchy songs, it has almost no redeeming qualities whatsoever. Therefore, I do not recommend this show.
If you want a good British sketch comedy show, watch Horrible Histories. It may not air on television very much outside the UK, but plenty of clips from the show are on YouTube. Trust me, you'll have a much better time with that show than you would with this garbage heap.
