From J.K. Rowling’s smash-hit wizarding stage show Harry Potter and the Cursed Child to acclaimed — and gritty — British TV dramas such as National Treasure and the recent HBO/BBC His Dark Materials adaptation, or (almost) a galaxy far, far away for Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker (until J.J. Abrams took over), Jack Thorne has swiftly become one of the most in-demand, prolific and adaptable writers in the business.

Timothy Spall gives a moving performance in Electric Dreams’ strongest and most emotionally satisfying story yet…

At the centre of The Commuter is one of those truths that, like the inevitability of death, or how much salt they put in Kellogg’s Corn flakes, most of us prefer not to acknowledge. In a different life without our kids, we might be happier. We’d have fewer wrinkles, a tidier house and a better sex-life. The people we love aren’t always good for us.
The more uplifting side of that truth is that most of us choose them anyway. Whatever the hardship, our family is ours and no other option—even if it’s easier—can replace them.

Damien Chazelle is so hot right now. The writer/director has an Academy Award for directing La La Land, a feature that also won Best Picture for several minutes, or at least we thought won the Oscar for several minutes. Both La La Land and Whiplash were nominated for Best Picture and Whiplash did win three Oscars overall including J.K. Simmons winning for Best Performance by an Actor in a Supporting Role under Chazelle’s direction. Next, Chazelle is directing First Man, a biopic about Neil Armstrong, the first man to walk on the Moon. Ryan Gosling, Jon Bernthal, Claire Foy, Kyle Chandler, Corey Stoll, and Jason Clark will be starring in First Man for Chazelle.

Some exciting new UK drama and comedy commissions are making their way to TV over the next year or so…
We know, we know. You still have two episodes of Fargo season two before you can think about starting season three. You’ve already fallen behind on American Gods. Your planner memory is chock-a-block with Big Little Lies and that Oj Simpson thing and some Spanish prison series your workmate bullied you into recording. You’re struggling to make time for Twin Peaks. New Game Of Thrones is just around the corner. And guess what, Netflix UK have just added a whole new season of It’s Always Sunny, those sods. One in five women in London in 1763 were prostitutes, and many of them by choice.
Hulu’s new series “Harlots” explores the world of brothels in Georgian London and the women who made the decision to make this their life’s work. For some London women in the 18th century, being a whore was the best possible option, even better than marriage, because it offered the possibility of upwards mobility, independence and even home ownership.

Margaret Atwood’s classic novel comes to Hulu this April and, based on what we’ve seen so far, we’re excited. In this eerie new teaser for the dystopian drama, we watch Offred (Elisabeth Moss) don the red garb which denotes her status as a Handmaid enslaved by the nation of Gilead, a totalitarian regime which has stripped women of all rights, leaving women like Offred powerless. It’s not a choice she made willingly, we see, thanks to flashes of the chaos which has brought her to this point.

Some big things are happening in Leonardo DiCaprio‘s realm. First, Deadline tells us his company, Appian Way, has partnered with Paramount for Truevine, an adaptation of Beth Macy‘s non-fiction tome — subtitled Two Brothers, a Kidnapping, and a Mother’s Quest; A True Story of the Jim Crow South — concerning George and Willie Muse, two black brothers who were kidnapped in 1899 and put on display in traveling freak shows across the Jim Crow-dominated south.
It’s positioned as a starring role for DiCaprio, which, given the description, is a bit odd, but there may be a role in the form of (and this would sound so much funnier if the story weren’t so upsetting) “a white man [who] offered them a piece of candy.” A cousin-of-sorts to Django Unchained‘s Calvin (ahem) Candie, perhaps?
The other property Appian Way’s been eyeing is probably much easier to digest as entertainment,...

Gordon-Levitt will star in Sovereign, from director Marc Munden, who’s probably best known for his work on British TV series like Utopia and the recent Channel 4 mini-series National Treasure. The new film is being described as a sci-fi thriller, and will see the Looper star play a man searching for his estranged wife on an abandoned space station. Jack Thorne and Marc Munden’s compelling, accomplished National Treasure is a demanding but rewarding watch. Spoilers…
Warning: contains major spoilers.
After the first episode of National Treasure aired, I read a piece suggesting it was heading for either a harmful or meaningless ending. The argument ran that if Robbie Coltrane’s character—a light entertainment star accused of a string of historical sexual assaults—turned out to be innocent, it would further the insidious narrative that women routinely lie about rape. If he was revealed to be guilty, then Channel 4 had just wasted four hours attempting to humanise a serial rapist when there were more deserving perspectives from which to tell the story.

Having stalled at Channel 4 and AMC, Electric Dreams has moved to Amazon...
Last year, Channel 4 announced an alliance with Sony Pictures Television and AMC. This cross-Atlantic collaboration was focused on producing a “hugely ambitious” anthology series inspired by the works of sci-fi writing legend Philip K Dick.

The show was given the title Electric Dreams: The World Of Philip K Dick, and Ronald D Moore (Battlestar Galactica), Michael Dinner (Justified) and Bryan Cranston – who will also star in the show – all signed on as executive producers.
However, AMC apparently dropped out and left the show without a home. Channel 4 had been very close to green-lighting the series, but without AMC the whole process stalled.
