The Duke's Tracheotomy
Prismark1018 August 2017
From James Wood the creator of the religious sitcom Rev, is this medical comedy set in Victorian London.

Rory Kinnear is the vain Dr Lessing theatrically performing operations with his bloodied gown to an adoring public as he tries to beat his personal best of 92 seconds for a leg amputation. He does not believe in anaesthetic which was in its infancy then. After the op he has a well deserved cigarette but his patient still ends up dead.

Never mind his next task is to perform a rare tracheotomy on royalty but a celebratory cigarette after the procedure causes havoc.

The humour is puerile with plenty of jokes about women's problems. Lydia Leonard plays the neglected wife of Dr Lessing, sexually frustrated she consults William (Mathew Baynton) who has modern views of psychology, he becomes both embarrassed and aroused by her.

Presiding over all this madness is Rupert Everett as the mercurial and anti semitic Dr Hendrick.

The opening episode was weak, yet to find its feet unless Dr Lessing chopped them off.
