It's a Swedish sci-fi tale targeting a pre-teenage audience judged by the frequently banal dialogue. But even kids/family movies should have some kind of sensible story to tell, something of which Alone in Space, displays precious little evidence.
It's sometime in the future and the earth is "broken" ... whatever that means. Use your imagination, because the movie can't be bothered expanding further on that one. In fact any of the few times one character asks another character a "big question" in this movie, the responder is likely to fob it off with something along the lines of, "Let's talk about that some other time". It's truly frustrating.
Anyway, the only way for human life to continue is for a spaceship ark to be sent to some planet called Viel. Pregnant Mum (Speedy; yes her nickname) who has apparently had a role in designing this huge spaceship capable of carrying thousands, finds out she isn't in the lottery for a berth. (I know. Like me you're probably thinking the spaceship designer is probably one of the most required people. Nope, that makes too much sense.)
Anyway her ridiculously petulant solution to her quandary, is to simply hijack the starship in front of everyone queuing to board and take off herself with just her daughter for company. Yep! That easy and everyone else can apparently go and get stuffed back on poor old "broken" Earth. That's not the best of it. After she gives birth to her brat of a son, she decides to leave the starship for reasons that are never shared with the audience. So now the kids are ... Alone in Space ... with just their Japanese (Yes, not even Swedish!) -speaking AI super-computer for company. Don't worry mums and dads of the world. They don't stay that way for long. ET is on a collision path and let me just say, that that the siblings' smooth flight to Viel is all but over.
I like seeing other countries, in this case Sweden, attempt science-fiction movies on much smaller budgets than your typical Hollywood studio production. But they want to be dealing with something that's just a little more intellectually stimulating than an average episode of Power Rangers, or Teenage Ninja Turtles. In this case the production standards are quite acceptable, the acting is just about competent, but any pretence to telling a half way sensible, semi-realistic story is all but abandoned, just like the two leading characters in this very dumbed-down film.
