Diversity is the key

Why some are moaning about sister ursuler is beyond me . Not all people and situations are " nice " . And that includes nuns ! I love the diversity of this fabulous show and long may it continue

One of My Favorite Episodes

Warning: Spoilers
The moment when Sister Ursula speaks to little Mickey Watts brought me to tears. While most thought of her as rigid and unfeeling, her compassion and tenderness toward that little boy showed her true goodness. I recognized the actress from "Downton Abbey" and now appreciate her talent in other shows. And the little boy who portrayed Mickey Watts (Tommy Finnegan) absolutely broke my heart in this episode. I loved him and was so glad he had a happy ending. One of my favorite episodes in a truly wonderful series.

Get over the changes.

Warning: Spoilers
Spoilers. Observations. Opinions.

Get over the changes. We are missing several original characters, but the newer ones seem to holding the place together.

The new humorless leader does not help matters, however. Efficiency almost to the point of cruelty is never appreciated, and only makes for unwelcome and grudging cooperation from the staff.

If old characters come back, great. If not, so be it. Actors get better deals, and must move up. This is an ensemble piece, in which actors constantly are being looked at by outside interests. Old characters here, meaning their actors, can get lead parts in new shows, with perhaps more money offered as salary.

New patients each week are interesting and different. The cruel husband who threw the wife on the floor should be in prison. The little boy may forever be left with a condition that could need mental counseling. He certainly has seen a lot of painful things. He has a bad image of what a father should be. The child actor should be applauded. He is very good.

Amazing!

Warning: Spoilers
I'm not sure why some object to some of the storylines as being too unpleasant and act like it's new . The show has always tackled difficult issues.

New characters and departing ones are not uncommon especially in a series like this one .

Nurse Phyllis Crane is probably my favorite character really love how she helped the young mother and her children. It's one of my favorites as the mother was always determined to get away from the abuse despite her own mother not being sympathetic. Little Mickey is such a treasure. You know he would be a wonderful big brother to his sister.

Ursula was obviously not flexible enough for the kind of work these nuns and midwives do . She does have a better side as she had with Mickey.

Mary Cynthia is a truly gentle soul. It's not often you can say that . Barbara probably comes to the closest to that type of person on CTM .

Trixie's absence at the time was due to the actress taking time off to have her first daughter.

They are always facing challenges.

I used to love this series

The Season 6 Christmas Special was wonderful. To then be presented with a character so rigid and unfeeling as Sister Ursula I just don't understand. I have watched all the other episodes several times, but I can't even seem to watch five minutes of the series now with this disturbing presence. Whose brilliant idea was it to add a character that disillusions the viewers and makes them stop watching?

A show on the way down
studioAT8 February 2017
Oh dear. This once great show is going through a tough time. Having weathered the storm of Jessica Raine leaving, it now has to cope with the loss of Pam Ferris, Miranda Hart still being unable to commit to returning, and for the first few episodes of this series we are without Helen George.

This makes for a weak first episode of the series. It's like a Christmas tree without lights, very nice but not that special. We've seen all the variations of plots by now and it all feels a bit samey. Without the bigger names in the cast present too it really isn't on top form.

It's a shame because at its best this show is great.Unfortunately the 2016 Christmas Special seems to have been a sign of things to come.

Terrible episode. One-dimensional cruelty.
karen-heffernan17 September 2022
Sister Ursula is put in charge of Nonnatus House and Sister Julienne is demoted and humiliation for no justification or even explanation. Sister Julienne has always been an exemplary superior, who everyone loves and respects, and this plot point makes no sense at all.

A battered woman's mother is inexplicably cruel to her and sides with with her daughter's abusive husband - no reason given.

The only redeeming scene was Shelagh's with her husband at the end of the episode.

Where is the character development? Why the lazy writing? This show is better than that.

I hope it improves. I usually find the episodes to be 7/10 - 10/10 (so far) but I was sorely disappointed in this one.
