Rife with inaccuracies

I hoped to like this series, but the writers make it hard to do so. Drawing the HBC/independent trader conflict in such simple terms is a ploy to rewrite history to suit an agenda. The church was an important part of settlements in the 18th century and James Bay is without a church altogether, having only one drunken conman for a priest. Quotes that open the episodes come from modern 20th/21st century activists, not from historical figures. The low budget keeps the producers from being able to show the Metis and the Cree in any numbers that would illustrate, even vaguely, what the HBC faced in the failing of the monopoly the company claimed on the fur trade in the 18th century. This is a silly moral play without any moral basis.

Plodding along

A mix of everything as before but none of it really gels too much. Silly title cards, low rent plotting and indifferent actors barking their lines at each other. At this point you're wondering why you care as it keeps plodding along.

Had some heft until....

.....the girl Clenna's arrival. Now the plot went straight to 'soap opera' with all the trappings of the besotted young male and the crafty targeted female whose arrival brings so much more fodder to dig more post holes to waste 2 more seasons.

I found the acting decent but the plot is sparse and as noted injecting the sudden arrival of a long lost romantic partner in 1730's Hudson Bay fails to pass the credulity test.

It's a shame because this may have merit but I lost all interest - better to have detailed the history of the Hudson Bay Company - why this quasi-govt/pvt corporation was created and how it kept expanding..
