Against Character's Nature
lorennerol2 November 2021
Warning: Spoilers
I loved Poldark right til this episode. The whole show was so beautiful and the people so truly loyal in their nature.

This episode destroys all of that the character development, and throws it in the trash. Maybe this happens in the book, but it's definitely not worthy of putting in the show. This episode completely ruined the character of Ross Poldark for me and I completely stopped watching the show after it. It was disgusting to me how he had loved Demelza so much before, and they went through so much together, then he becomes a selfish prick who assaults a woman he used to love. Completely the opposite of the character he had been before, where he always had been fighting for what's right and being morally just.

Just Disappointed.

Letdown

Warning: Spoilers
I had such a strong reaction to this episode that I am not sure if I can continue watching. Well aware that Ross has 'committed adultery' in his heart (thank you Pres Carter) regarding his behavior towards Elizabeth (and vice versa), it was still disgusting to see it actually happen. Who in their right mind would choose the horse-faced elite before Demelza?!

However this only proves how well-produced this series is. The producers & directors have the ability to evoke such emotions. Amazing!

Took a serious turn for the worse

For the record, I have never read the novel and don't care about it. But I have seen all the episodes up to this one where Ross finally goes way out to left field in a different bed. A major reason this drama appealed to me, aside from all the fantastic acting and cinematography, was the fact there were likable, believable characters. Up to now, we have had mostly believable characters except for evil George, a one dimensional character serving only as an antagonist. In this episode, Ross, portrayed as a strong upper class born man with high ideals and super strong convictions, suddenly commits an act that is totally against character and ruins the core relationship in the show. And what we end up with is a broken relationship yielding two unlikable characters. I don't know how the novel was written...but they needed to change the story lines to keep their core, contemporary audience engaged. They already killed off Francis, after making him extremely likable. That was sin number one. Ross committed sin number TWO....and killed the show's appeal for me. The producers obviously cannot come up with a drama that has all Downton Abby had. I don't believe adultery was used in that show. The central married couple in that show had some close calls, but they ALWAYS remained together as a loving couple. They didn't end up smacking each other - domestic violence!!! Poldark is just another soap now!!!

Ross is a fallable character

Au contraire, ohlabtechguy! I only started watching Poldark recently and have been going through the synopses from the first episode. He was engaged to Elizabeth before going off to fight in the American war and has a bad adrenaline habit, constantly going off to solve matters in foreign areas, leaving Desmelda to fend for herself (quite well) I have a lot of parts to piece together so will stream the first two seasons. Desmelda entered the story as a waif that Poldark hired on as a housekeeper, meaning that he slept with the hired help. Basically, he can't keep his pants zipped.

In the first season of Downton Abbey, the Lord was having a dalliance with a housemaid.

All Must Bow To The Gods of the Scriptwriters
MovieGuy-109247 March 2024
Warning: Spoilers
Poldark had been a completely moral character always trying to do what's right...up to now. He goes completely out of character and sleeps with another woman. This messes up the only remaining worthwhile relationship in the whole series. There's no reason to continue watching this stupid series.

The series started off well with the main relationship between Poldark and Demelza growing, along with absolutely beautiful scenery. But pretty soon it became obvious that everything that's going to happen is totally at the whim of the writers. When Poldark was on trial, he definitely should have gone to jail based on everything the audience saw, but a sudden deus ex machina set him free. For all of everyone's hard work, nothing gets better and everything just gets worse. The writers are just trying to create more drama without any depth or any humor. All humor was left behind after the first few episodes.

How did the writers so badly lose their way.
