This was a very weak episode in an otherwise great series. The worst thing is that the episode is mostly pointless. It actually plays more like a clip show as it talks about the events that led up to everything. There still weren't that many episodes to even set us up, so it doesn't even have that much to recap! I will give it at least one credit. Goku actually actively talks with the narrator. I never thought of him as a character in the actual show and that was pretty funny.
Besides that, there's really no reason for this to exist. Goku and Vegeta manage to persuade Majin Buu to take part in this tournament and we see Gohan and Piccolo training. Buu's a funny character, but the episode has little going for it. I wanted to see more stuff with Champa and Vados. They're fairly entertaining characters. Well, not as good as Beerus and Whis who are at least featured prominently in the episode with new footage. **1/2
